The Covenant at Horeb
1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:
Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I declare in your hearing this day. Learn them and observe them carefully.
2 YAHWEH GOD OUR HE MADE WITH US A COVENANT AT HOREB
2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.
3 NOT WITH ANCESTORS OUR HE MADE YAHWEH <OBJ.> THE COVENANT <THE> THIS FOR WITH US WE THESE HERE THIS DAY ALL OF US ALIVE
3 He did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with all of us who are alive here today.
4 FACE ON FACE HE SPOKE YAHWEH WITH YOU AT THE MOUNTAIN FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE FIRE
4 The LORD spoke with you face to face out of the fire on the mountain.
5 I [WAS] STANDING BETWEEN YAHWEH AND BETWEEN YOU AT THE TIME <THE> THAT TO DECLARE TO YOU <OBJ.> [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH FOR YOU WERE AFRAID OF <THE FACE OF> THE FIRE AND NOT YOU WENT UP ON THE MOUNTAIN <TO> SAYING
The Ten Commandments
(Exodus 20:1–17 )
5 At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. And He said:
6 I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR WHO I BROUGHT OUT YOU FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT FROM A HOUSE OF SLAVES
6 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
7 NOT IT WILL BELONG TO YOU GODS OTHER ON FACE MY
7 You shall have no other gods before Me.
8 NOT YOU MUST MAKE FOR YOURSELF AN IMAGE OF ANY FORM WHICH [IS] IN THE HEAVENS <FROM> ABOVE AND WHICH [IS] ON THE EARTH <FROM> BENEATH AND WHICH [IS] IN THE WATERS FROM UNDER TO THE EARTH
8 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath.
9 NOT YOU MUST BOW DOWN TO THEM AND NOT YOU MUST BE ENTICED TO SERVE THEM FOR I YAHWEH GOD YOUR [AM] A GOD JEALOUS [WHO] VISITS [THE] INIQUITY OF PARENTS ON CHILDREN AND ON A THIRD GENERATION AND ON A FOURTH GENERATION OF [THOSE WHO] HATE ME
9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
10 AND [WHO] DOES COVENANT LOYALTY TO THOUSANDS OF [THOSE WHO] LOVE ME AND OF [THOSE WHO] KEEP COMMANDMENTS MY
10 but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
11 NOT YOU MUST TAKE <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR FOR <THE> EMPTINESS FOR NOT HE WILL LEAVE UNPUNISHED YAHWEH <OBJ.> [ONE] WHO HE WILL TAKE <OBJ.> NAME HIS FOR <THE> EMPTINESS
11 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
12 KEEP <OBJ.> [THE] DAY OF THE SABBATH TO SET APART AS HOLY IT JUST AS HE COMMANDED YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR
12 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.
13 SIX DAYS YOU WILL LABOR AND YOU WILL DO ALL WORK YOUR
13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
14 AND [THE] DAY <THE> SEVENTH [IS] A SABBATH TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR NOT YOU MUST DO ANY WORK YOU AND SON YOUR AND DAUGHTER YOUR AND [MALE] SERVANT YOUR AND FEMALE SERVANT YOUR AND OX YOUR AND DONKEY YOUR AND ALL LIVESTOCK YOUR AND SOJOURNER YOUR WHO [IS] IN GATES YOUR SO THAT HE MAY REST [MALE] SERVANT YOUR AND FEMALE SERVANT YOUR LIKE YOU
14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work— neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox or donkey or any of your livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest as you do.
15 AND YOU WILL REMEMBER THAT A SLAVE YOU WERE IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND HE BROUGHT OUT YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR FROM THERE BY A HAND STRONG AND BY AN ARM OUTSTRETCHED THERE- -FORE HE HAS COMMANDED YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO OBSERVE <OBJ.> [THE] DAY OF THE SABBATH
15 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
16 HONOR <OBJ.> FATHER YOUR AND <OBJ.> MOTHER YOUR JUST AS HE HAS COMMANDED YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR SO THAT THEY MAY BE LONG ! DAYS YOUR AND SO THAT IT MAY GO WELL FOR YOU ON THE LAND WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO YOU
16 Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
18 AND NOT YOU MUST COMMIT ADULTERY
18 You shall not commit adultery.
20 AND NOT YOU MUST TESTIFY AGAINST NEIGHBOR YOUR TESTIMONY OF FALSEHOOD
20 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
21 AND NOT YOU MUST COVET [THE] WIFE OF NEIGHBOR YOUR AND NOT YOU MUST DESIRE [THE] HOUSE OF NEIGHBOR YOUR FIELD HIS AND [MALE] SERVANT HIS AND FEMALE SERVANT HIS OX HIS AND DONKEY HIS AND ALL THAT [BELONGS] TO NEIGHBOR YOUR
21 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house or field, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
22 <OBJ.> THE WORDS <THE> THESE HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO ALL ASSEMBLY YOUR AT THE MOUNTAIN FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE FIRE THE CLOUD AND THE THICK DARKNESS A VOICE GREAT AND NOT HE ADDED AND HE INSCRIBED THEM ON TWO TABLETS OF STONE<S> AND HE GAVE THEM TO ME
Moses Intercedes for the People
(Exodus 20:18–21 ; Hebrews 12:18–29 )
22 The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice to your whole assembly out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
23 AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD YOU <OBJ.> THE VOICE FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE DARKNESS AND THE MOUNTAIN [WAS] BURNING WITH <THE> FIRE AND YOU DREW NEAR ! TO ME ALL [THE] CHIEFS OF TRIBES YOUR AND ELDERS YOUR
23 And when you heard the voice out of the darkness while the mountain was blazing with fire, all the heads of your tribes and your elders approached me,
24 AND YOU SAID HERE! HE HAS SHOWN US YAHWEH GOD OUR <OBJ.> GLORY HIS AND <OBJ.> GREATNESS HIS AND <OBJ.> VOICE HIS WE HAVE HEARD FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE FIRE THE DAY <THE> THIS WE HAVE SEEN THAT HE SPEAKS GOD WITH <THE> HUMANKIND AND HE WILL LIVE
24 and you said, “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the fire. Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks with him.
25 AND THEREFORE <TO> WHY? WILL WE DIE FOR IT WILL CONSUME US THE FIRE <THE> GREAT <THE> THIS IF [ARE] REPEATING WE TO HEAR <OBJ.> [THE] VOICE OF YAHWEH GOD OUR AGAIN AND WE WILL DIE
25 But now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us, and we will die, if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.
26 FOR WHO? [IS] ALL FLESH WHO HE HAS HEARD [THE] VOICE OF GOD LIVING SPEAKING FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE FIRE LIKE US AND HE HAS LIVED
26 For who of all flesh has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the fire, as we have, and survived?
27 DRAW NEAR YOU AND HEAR <OBJ.> ALL THAT HE WILL SAY YAHWEH GOD OUR AND YOU YOU WILL SPEAK TO US <OBJ.> ALL THAT HE WILL SPEAK YAHWEH GOD OUR TO YOU AND WE WILL LISTEN AND WE WILL DO [IT]
27 Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says. Then you can tell us everything the LORD our God tells you; we will listen and obey.”
28 AND HE HEARD YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] SOUND OF WORDS YOUR WHEN SPOKE YOU TO ME AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO ME I HAVE HEARD <OBJ.> [THE] SOUND OF [THE] WORDS OF THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS WHICH THEY SPOKE TO YOU THEY HAVE DONE WELL ALL THAT THEY HAVE SPOKEN
28 And the LORD heard the words you spoke to me, and He said to me, “I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken.
29 WHO? WILL HE GIVE AND IT WILL BELONG HEART THEIR THIS TO THEM TO FEAR <OBJ.> ME AND TO KEEP <OBJ.> ALL COMMANDMENTS MY ALL THE DAYS SO THAT IT MAY GO WELL FOR THEM AND FOR CHILDREN THEIR FOR EVER
29 If only they had such a heart to fear Me and keep all My commandments always, so that it might be well with them and with their children forever.
30 GO SAY TO THEM RETURN <FOR> YOURSELVES TO TENTS YOUR
30 Go and tell them: ‘Return to your tents.’
31 AND YOU HERE STAND WITH ME SO LET ME SPEAK TO YOU <OBJ.> ALL THE COMMANDMENT AND THE STATUTES AND THE JUDGMENTS WHICH YOU WILL TEACH THEM AND THEY WILL OBSERVE [THEM] IN THE LAND WHICH I [AM] ABOUT TO GIVE TO THEM TO TAKE POSSESSION OF IT
31 But you stand here with Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and statutes and ordinances you are to teach them to follow in the land that I am giving them to possess.”
32 AND YOU WILL TAKE CARE TO DO JUST AS HE HAS COMMANDED YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> YOU NOT YOU MUST TURN ASIDE RIGHT [HAND] AND LEFT [HAND]
32 So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or to the left.
33 IN ALL THE WAY WHICH HE HAS COMMANDED YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> YOU YOU WILL WALK SO THAT YOU MAY LIVE ! AND IT WILL BE GOOD FOR YOU AND YOU WILL PROLONG DAYS IN THE LAND WHICH YOU WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF !
33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.
