Drive Out the Nations
1 When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, and He drives out before you many nations— the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you—
2 AND HE WILL DELIVER UP THEM YAHWEH GOD YOUR <TO> BEFORE YOU AND YOU WILL STRIKE DOWN THEM CERTAINLY <TO TOTALLY DESTROY> YOU WILL TOTALLY DESTROY <OBJ.> THEM NOT YOU WILL MAKE TO <THE> THEM A COVENANT AND NOT YOU WILL SHOW FAVOR TO THEM
2 and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you to defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy.
3 AND NOT YOU WILL INTERMARRY WITH <THE> THEM DAUGHTER YOUR NOT YOU WILL GIVE TO SON HIS AND DAUGHTER HIS NOT YOU WILL TAKE FOR SON YOUR
3 Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,
4 FOR HE WILL TURN ASIDE <OBJ.> SON YOUR FROM AFTER ME AND THEY WILL SERVE GODS OTHER AND IT WILL BURN [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH ON <THE> YOU AND HE WILL DESTROY YOU QUICKLY
4 because they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you.
5 THAT EXCEPT THUS YOU WILL DO TO <THE> THEM ALTARS THEIR YOU WILL BREAK DOWN AND SACRED PILLARS THEIR YOU WILL SHATTER AND ASHERAH POLES THEIR YOU WILL CUT DOWN ! AND IMAGES THEIR YOU WILL BURN ! WITH <THE> FIRE
5 Instead, this is what you are to do to them: tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their idols in the fire.
6 FOR [ARE] A PEOPLE HOLY YOU TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR <IN> <THE> YOU HE HAS CHOSEN YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO BECOME FOR <THE> HIM <INTO> A PEOPLE OF POSSESSION FROM ALL THE PEOPLES WHICH [ARE] ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE GROUND
6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all peoples on the face of the earth.
7 NOT BECAUSE WERE NUMEROUS YOU MORE THAN ALL THE PEOPLES HE LOVED YAHWEH <IN> <THE> YOU AND HE CHOSE <IN> <THE> YOU FOR YOU [WERE] THE FEW FROM ALL THE PEOPLES
7 The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than the other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
8 FOR FROM [THE] LOVE OF YAHWEH <OBJ.> YOU AND <FROM> BECAUSE KEPT HE <OBJ.> THE OATH WHICH HE SWORE TO ANCESTORS YOUR HE BROUGHT OUT YAHWEH <OBJ.> YOU BY A HAND STRONG AND HE REDEEMED YOU FROM A HOUSE OF SLAVES FROM [THE] HAND OF PHARAOH [THE] KING OF EGYPT
8 But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath He swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
9 AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT YAHWEH GOD YOUR HE [IS] <THE> GOD THE GOD <THE> FAITHFUL [WHO] KEEPS THE COVENANT AND <THE> COVENANT LOYALTY TO [THOSE WHO] LOVE HIM AND TO [THOSE WHO] KEEP COMMANDMENTS HIS TO A THOUSAND GENERATION[S]
9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
10 AND [WHO] REPAYS TO [THOSE WHO] HATE HIM TO FACE HIS BY DESTROYING HIM NOT HE DELAYS TO [THE] [ONE WHO] HATES HIM TO FACE HIS HE REPAYS TO <THE> HIM
10 But those who hate Him He repays to their faces with destruction; He will not hesitate to repay to his face the one who hates Him.
11 AND YOU WILL KEEP <OBJ.> THE COMMANDMENT AND <OBJ.> THE STATUTES AND <OBJ.> THE JUDGMENTS WHICH I [AM] COMMANDING YOU THIS DAY TO OBSERVE THEM
11 So keep the commandments and statutes and ordinances that I am giving you to follow this day.
12 AND IT WILL BE CONSEQUENCE YOU WILL HEAR ! <OBJ.> THE JUDGMENTS <THE> THESE AND YOU WILL TAKE CARE AND YOU WILL OBSERVE <OBJ.> THEM AND HE WILL KEEP YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO <THE> YOU <OBJ.> THE COVENANT AND <OBJ.> <THE> COVENANT LOYALTY WHICH HE SWORE TO ANCESTORS YOUR
The Promises of God
(Exodus 23:20–33 )
12 If you listen to these ordinances and keep them carefully then the LORD your God will keep His covenant and the loving devotion that He swore to your fathers.
13 AND HE WILL LOVE YOU AND HE WILL BLESS YOU AND HE WILL INCREASE YOU AND HE WILL BLESS [THE] FRUIT OF WOMB YOUR AND [THE] FRUIT OF GROUND YOUR GRAIN YOUR AND NEW WINE YOUR AND FRESH OIL YOUR [THE] YOUNG OF CATTLE<S> YOUR AND [THE] YOUNG ONES OF FLOCK YOUR ON THE LAND WHICH HE SWORE TO ANCESTORS YOUR TO GIVE TO <THE> YOU
13 He will love you and bless you and multiply you. He will bless the fruit of your womb and the produce of your land— your grain, new wine, and oil, the young of your herds and the lambs of your flocks— in the land that He swore to your fathers to give you.
14 BLESSED YOU WILL BE MORE THAN ALL THE PEOPLES NOT HE WILL BE AMONG <THE> YOU A STERILE [MALE] AND A BARREN [FEMALE] AND AMONG LIVESTOCK YOUR
14 You will be blessed above all peoples; among you there will be no barren man or woman or livestock.
15 AND HE WILL REMOVE YAHWEH FROM YOU EVERY SICKNESS AND ALL [THE] DISEASES OF EGYPT <THE> HARMFUL WHICH YOU EXPERIENCED NOT HE WILL PUT THEM ON <THE> YOU AND HE WILL SET THEM ON ALL [THOSE WHO] HATE YOU
15 And the LORD will remove from you all sickness. He will not lay upon you any of the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but He will inflict them on all who hate you.
16 AND YOU WILL CONSUME <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLES WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO DELIVER UP TO <THE> YOU NOT IT WILL LOOK WITH PITY EYE YOUR ON THEM AND NOT YOU WILL SERVE <OBJ.> GODS THEIR FOR [WILL BE] A SNARE IT TO <THE> YOU
16 You must destroy all the peoples the LORD your God will deliver to you. Do not look on them with pity. Do not worship their gods, for that will be a snare to you.
17 FOR YOU WILL SAY IN HEART YOUR [ARE] GREAT THE NATIONS <THE> THESE MORE THAN I HOW? WILL I BE ABLE TO DISPOSSESS THEM
17 You may say in your heart, “These nations are greater than we are; how can we drive them out?”
18 NOT YOU MUST BE AFRAID FROM <THE> THEM CAREFULLY <TO REMEMBER> YOU WILL REMEMBER <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE DID YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO PHARAOH AND TO ALL EGYPT
18 But do not be afraid of them. Be sure to remember what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and all Egypt:
19 THE TRIALS <THE> GREAT WHICH THEY SAW EYES YOUR AND THE SIGNS AND THE WONDERS AND THE HAND <THE> MIGHTY AND THE ARM <THE> OUTSTRETCHED WHICH HE BROUGHT OUT YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR THUS HE WILL DO YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO ALL THE PEOPLES WHICH YOU [ARE] AFRAID OF <BEFORE> THEM
19 the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, and the mighty hand and outstretched arm by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.
20 AND ALSO <OBJ.> THE HORNET HE WILL SEND YAHWEH GOD YOUR AMONG <THE> THEM UNTIL PERISH [THOSE] WHO REMAIN AND [THOSE] WHO HIDE THEMSELVES FROM BEFORE YOU
20 Moreover, the LORD your God will send the hornet against them until even the survivors hiding from you have perished.
21 NOT YOU MUST BE TERRIFIED OF <BEFORE> THEM FOR YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] IN MIDST YOUR A GOD GREAT AND AWESOME
21 Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.
22 AND HE WILL CLEAR AWAY YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> THE NATIONS <THE> THESE FROM BEFORE YOU LITTLE LITTLE NOT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE AN END OF THEM QUICKLY LEST IT SHOULD INCREASE WITH YOU [THE] ANIMAL[S] OF THE FIELD
22 The LORD your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be enabled to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals would multiply around you.
23 AND HE WILL DELIVER UP THEM YAHWEH GOD YOUR <TO> BEFORE YOU AND HE WILL CONFUSE THEM CONFUSION GREAT UNTIL ARE DESTROYED THEY
23 But the LORD your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed.
24 AND HE WILL GIVE KINGS THEIR IN HAND YOUR AND YOU WILL DESTROY <OBJ.> NAME THEIR FROM UNDER THE HEAVENS NOT HE WILL STAND ANYONE IN FACE YOUR UNTIL DESTROYING YOU <OBJ.> THEM
24 He will hand their kings over to you, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you; you will annihilate them.
25 [THE] IMAGES OF GODS THEIR YOU WILL BURN ! WITH <THE> FIRE NOT YOU WILL COVET SILVER AND GOLD ON THEM AND YOU WILL TAKE [IT] FOR <THE> YOURSELF LEST YOU SHOULD BE ENSNARED BY <THE> IT FOR [IS] [THE] ABOMINATION OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR THAT
25 You must burn up the images of their gods; do not covet the silver and gold that is on them or take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it; for it is detestable to the LORD your God.
26 AND NOT YOU WILL BRING AN ABOMINATION INTO HOUSE YOUR AND YOU WILL BE AN OBJECT FOR DESTRUCTION LIKE IT UTTERLY <DETEST> YOU WILL DETEST IT AND UTTERLY <ABHOR> YOU WILL ABHOR IT FOR [IS] AN OBJECT FOR DESTRUCTION IT
26 And you must not bring any detestable thing into your house, or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. You are to utterly detest and abhor it, because it is set apart for destruction.
