14AND SHE SAID TO HIM ZERESH WIFE HIS AND ALL FRIENDS HIS LET PEOPLE MAKE A GALLOWS HIGH FIFTY CUBIT[S] AND IN THE MORNING SPEAK TO THE KING SO PEOPLE MAY HANG <OBJ.> MORDECAI ON IT AND GO WITH THE KING TO THE FEAST JOYFUL AND IT WAS GOOD THE WORD <TO> BEFORE HAMAN AND HE MADE THE GALLOWS 14His wife Zeresh and all his friends told him, “Have them build a gallows fifty cubits high,*NoteClose50 cubits is approximately 75 feet or 22.9 meters high. and ask the king in the morning to have Mordecai hanged on it. Then go to the banquet with the king and enjoy yourself.” The advice pleased Haman, and he had the gallows constructed.
1IN THE NIGHT <THE> THAT IT FLED [THE] SLEEP OF THE KING AND HE SAID TO BRING <OBJ.> [THE] BOOK OF THE REMINDERS [THE] WORDS OF THE DAYS AND THEY WERE READ ALOUD <TO> BEFORE THE KING Mordecai Is Honored 1That night sleep escaped the king; so he ordered the Book of Records, the Chronicles,*NoteCloseOr the Book of Memorials, the Annals or the Book of Records of Historical Events to be brought in and read to him.
2AND IT WAS FOUND RECORDED THAT HE HAD TOLD MORDECAI ON BIGTHANA AND TERESH TWO OF [THE] EUNUCHS OF THE KING FROM [THE] GUARDS OF THE THRESHOLD WHO THEY HAD SOUGHT TO STRETCH OUT A HAND ON THE KING AHASUERUS 2And there it was found recorded that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana*NoteCloseBigthana is a variant of Bigthan; see Esther 2:21. and Teresh, two of the eunuchs who guarded the king’s entrance, when they had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
3AND HE SAID THE KING WHAT? HAS IT BEEN DONE HONOR AND GREATNESS FOR MORDECAI ON THIS AND THEY SAID [THE] YOUNG MEN OF THE KING SERVANTS HIS NOT IT WAS DONE WITH HIM ANYTHING 3The king inquired, “What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this act?” “Nothing has been done for him,” replied the king’s attendants.
4AND HE SAID THE KING WHO? [IS] IN THE COURT AND HAMAN HE HAD COME TO [THE] COURT OF [THE] HOUSE OF THE KING <THE> OUTER TO SPEAK TO THE KING TO HANG <OBJ.> MORDECAI ON THE GALLOWS WHICH HE HAD PREPARED FOR HIM 4“Who is in the court?” the king asked. Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to ask the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared for him.
5AND THEY SAID [THE] SERVANTS OF THE KING TO HIM THERE! HAMAN [IS] STANDING IN THE COURT AND HE SAID THE KING LET HIM COME 5So the king’s attendants answered him, “Haman is there, standing in the court.” “Bring him in,” ordered the king.
6AND HE CAME HAMAN AND HE SAID TO HIM THE KING WHAT? [IS] TO DO FOR THE MAN WHOM THE KING HE DELIGHTS IN HONOR HIS AND HE SAID HAMAN IN HEART HIS TO WHOM? WILL HE DELIGHT THE KING TO DO HONOR EXCESS MORE THAN ME 6Haman entered, and the king asked him, “What should be done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor?” Now Haman thought to himself, “Whom would the king be delighted to honor more than me?”
7AND HE SAID HAMAN TO THE KING A MAN WHOM THE KING HE DELIGHTS IN HONOR HIS 7And Haman told the king, “For the man whom the king is delighted to honor,
8LET PEOPLE BRING CLOTHING OF ROYALTY WHICH HE HAS WORN ON HIM THE KING AND A HORSE WHICH HE HAS RIDDEN ON IT THE KING AND WHICH IT HAS BEEN PUT A HEAD-DRESS OF ROYALTY ON HEAD ITS 8have them bring a royal robe that the king himself has worn and a horse on which the king himself has ridden— one with a royal crest placed on its head.
9AND LET THEM PUT THE CLOTHING AND THE HORSE ON [THE] HAND OF A MAN ONE OF [THE] OFFICIALS OF THE KING THE NOBLES AND THEY WILL CLOTHE <OBJ.> THE MAN WHOM THE KING HE DELIGHTS IN HONOR HIS AND THEY WILL MAKE RIDE HIM ON THE HORSE IN [THE] OPEN PLACE OF THE CITY AND THEY WILL PROCLAIM <TO> BEFORE HIM THUS IT WILL BE DONE FOR THE MAN WHOM THE KING HE DELIGHTS IN HONOR HIS 9Let the robe and the horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them array the man the king wants to honor and parade him on the horse through the city square, proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!’”
10AND HE SAID THE KING TO HAMAN HURRY TAKE <OBJ.> THE CLOTHING AND <OBJ.> THE HORSE JUST AS YOU HAVE SAID AND DO SO FOR MORDECAI THE JEW WHO SITS AT [THE] GATE OF THE KING MAY NOT YOU MAKE FALL A WORD FROM ALL THAT YOU HAVE SAID 10“Hurry,” said the king to Haman, “and do just as you proposed. Take the robe and the horse to Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything that you have suggested.”
11AND HE TOOK HAMAN <OBJ.> THE CLOTHING AND <OBJ.> THE HORSE AND HE CLOTHED <OBJ.> MORDECAI AND HE MADE RIDE HIM IN [THE] OPEN PLACE OF THE CITY AND HE PROCLAIMED <TO> BEFORE HIM THUS IT WILL BE DONE FOR THE MAN WHOM THE KING HE DELIGHTS IN HONOR HIS 11So Haman took the robe and the horse, arrayed Mordecai, and paraded him through the city square, crying out before him, “This is what is done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!”
12AND HE RETURNED MORDECAI TO [THE] GATE OF THE KING AND HAMAN HE HURRIED HIMSELF TO HOUSE HIS MOURNING AND COVERED OF HEAD 12Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief.
13AND HE RECOUNTED HAMAN TO ZERESH WIFE HIS AND TO ALL FRIENDS HIS <OBJ.> ALL THAT IT HAD HAPPENED TO HIM AND THEY SAID TO HIM WISE [MEN] HIS AND ZERESH WIFE HIS IF [IS] ONE OF [THE] OFFSPRING OF THE JEWS MORDECAI WHOM YOU HAVE BEGUN TO FALL <TO> BEFORE HIM NOT YOU WILL PREVAIL TO HIM FOR CERTAINLY <TO FALL> YOU WILL FALL <TO> BEFORE HIM 13Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has begun, is Jewish, you will not prevail against him— for surely you will fall before him.”
14STILL THEY [WERE] SPEAKING WITH HIM AND [THE] EUNUCHS OF THE KING THEY ARRIVED AND THEY MADE HASTE TO BRING <OBJ.> HAMAN TO THE FEAST WHICH SHE HAD PREPARED ESTHER 14While they were still speaking with Haman, the king’s eunuchs arrived and rushed him to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
