29IF NOW YOU YOURSELVES [ARE] CHRIST’S, THEN <THE> ABRAHAM’S SEED YOU ARE, AND ACCORDING TO [THE] PROMISE HEIRS. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.
1I SAY NOW, FOR AS LONG AS TIME THE HEIR A CHILD IS, [IN] NO[THING] HE DIFFERS FROM A SLAVE [THOUGH] OWNER OF EVERYTHING BEING; Sons and Heirs 1What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he is the owner of everything.
2INSTEAD UNDER GUARDIANS HE IS AND TRUSTEES UNTIL THE TIME APPOINTED <THE> BY [HIS] FATHER. 2He is subject to guardians and trustees until the date set by his father.
3SO ALSO WE OURSELVES WHEN WE WERE CHILDREN, UNDER THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE WORLD WE OURSELVES WERE HELD IN BONDAGE; 3So also, when we were children, we were enslaved under the basic principles*NoteCloseOr elemental forces; similarly in verse 9 of the world.
4WHEN HOWEVER HAD COME THE FULLNESS OF THE TIME, SENT FORTH <THE> GOD THE SON OF HIM, HAVING BEEN BORN OF A WOMAN, HAVING BEEN BORN UNDER [THE] LAW, 4But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5THAT THOSE UNDER [THE] LAW HE MAY REDEEM, SO THAT THE DIVINE ADOPTION AS SONS WE MAY RECEIVE. 5to redeem those under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.
6BECAUSE NOW YOU ARE SONS, SENT FORTH <THE> GOD THE SPIRIT OF THE SON OF HIM INTO THE HEARTS OF US CRYING OUT; ABBA O FATHER! 6And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father! ”
7SO NO LONGER YOU ARE A SLAVE BUT A SON; IF NOW A SON, ALSO AN HEIR OF THROUGH GOD CHRIST. 7So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, you are also an heir through God.
8BUT AT THAT TIME INDEED NOT KNOWING GOD YOU WERE ENSLAVED TO THOSE BY NATURE NOT BEING GODS; Paul’s Concern for the Galatians 8Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.
9NOW HOWEVER HAVING KNOWN GOD, RATHER HOWEVER HAVING BEEN KNOWN BY GOD, HOW DO YOU TURN AGAIN TO THE WEAK AND DESTITUTE PRINCIPLES TO WHICH AGAIN ANEW TO BE ENSLAVED YOU DESIRE? 9But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?
10DAYS YOU OBSERVE AND MONTHS AND SEASONS AND YEARS. 10You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!
11I FEAR FOR YOU LEST PERHAPS IN VAIN I HAVE TOILED FOR YOU. 11I fear for you, that my efforts for you may have been in vain.
12DO BECOME AS I MYSELF [AM], BECAUSE I MYSELF ALSO [HAVE BECOME] AS YOU YOURSELVES. BROTHERS, I IMPLORE YOU; [IN] NO [THING] ME YOU WRONGED. 12I beg you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong.
13YOU KNOW NOW THAT IN WEAKNESS OF THE FLESH I EVANGELISED TO YOU AT THE FIRST, 13You know that it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you.
14AND THE TEST OF YOU <THE> IN THE FLESH OF MINE NOT YOU DID DESPISE [ME] NOR REJECT [ME] WITH CONTEMPT, BUT AS AN ANGEL OF GOD YOU RECEIVED ME EVEN AS CHRIST JESUS. 14And although my illness was a trial to you, you did not despise or reject me. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus Himself.
15WHERE THEN WAS THE BLESSEDNESS OF YOU? I BEAR WITNESS FOR TO YOU THAT, IF POSSIBLE, THE EYES OF YOU HAVING GOUGED OUT THEN WOULD YOU HAVE GIVEN [THEM] TO ME. 15What then has become of your blessing? For I can testify that, if it were possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.
16SO ENEMY OF YOU HAVE I BECOME SPEAKING TRUTH TO YOU? 16Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?
17THEY ARE ZEALOUS AFTER YOU NOT RIGHTLY, BUT TO EXCLUDE YOU [FROM US] THEY DESIRE SO THAT THEM YOU MAY BE ZEALOUS AFTER. 17Those people are zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they want to isolate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them.
18GOOD [IT IS] NOW <THE> TO BE ZEALOUS IN A RIGHT [THING] AT ALL TIMES, AND NOT ONLY IN <THE> BEING PRESENT ME WITH YOU, 18Nevertheless, it is good to be zealous if it serves a noble purpose— at any time, and not only when I am with you.
19CHILDREN OF MINE, OF WHOM AGAIN I TRAVAIL UNTIL THAT MAY HAVE BEEN FORMED CHRIST IN YOU. 19My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,
20I WAS WISHING INDEED TO BE PRESENT WITH YOU PRESENTLY AND TO CHANGE THE TONE OF MINE, BECAUSE I AM PERPLEXED AS TO YOU. 20how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you.
21DO TELL ME, YOU WHO [ARE] UNDER [THE] LAW WISHING TO BE, THE LAW NOT YOU DO LISTEN TO? Hagar and Sarah (Genesis 21:9–21) 21Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not understand what the law says?
22IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN FOR THAT ABRAHAM TWO SONS HAD, ONE OF THE SLAVE WOMAN AND ONE OF THE FREE. 22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.*NoteCloseSee Genesis 16:15 and Genesis 21:2–3.
23BUT THE [ONE] INDEED OF THE SLAVE WOMAN ACCORDING TO FLESH HAS BEEN BORN, THE [ONE] HOWEVER OF THE FREE THROUGH THE PROMISE. 23His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born through the promise.
24WHICH THINGS ARE ALLEGORIZED; THESE FOR ARE <THE> TWO COVENANTS, ONE INDEED FROM MOUNT SINAI UNTO SLAVERY BEGETTING WHICH IS HAGAR. 24These things serve as illustrations, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children into slavery: This is Hagar.
25<THE> NOW HAGAR SINAI MOUNT IS IN <THE> ARABIA, SHE CORRESPONDS NOW TO THE PRESENT JERUSALEM, SHE IS IN SLAVERY FOR WITH THE CHILDREN OF HER. 25Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present-day Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.
26<THE> BUT THE ABOVE JERUSALEM FREE IS WHO IS MOTHER OF ALL OF US; 26But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.
27IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN FOR: DO REJOICE O BARREN WOMAN YOU WHO [ARE] NOT BEARING, DO BREAK FORTH AND DO CALL ALOUD YOU WHO [ARE] NOT TRAVAILING, BECAUSE MANY [ARE] THE CHILDREN OF THE DESOLATE WOMAN MORE THAN OF [HER] WHO HAVING THE HUSBAND. 27For it is written: “Rejoice, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have never travailed; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 54:1
28YOU YOURSELVES NOW, BROTHERS, LIKE ISAAC OF PROMISE CHILDREN YOU ARE. 28Now you,*NoteCloseWH, BYZ, and TR we brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
29BUT JUST AS AT THAT TIME THE [ONE] ACCORDING TO FLESH HAVING BEEN BORN HE WAS PERSECUTING THE [ONE BORN] ACCORDING TO SPIRIT SO ALSO [IT IS] NOW; 29At that time, however, the son born by the flesh persecuted the son born by the Spirit. It is the same now.
30BUT WHAT SAYS THE SCRIPTURE? DO CAST OUT THE SLAVE WOMAN AND THE SON OF HER, CERTAINLY FOR NOT WILL INHERIT THE SON OF THE SLAVE WOMAN ALONG WITH THE SON OF THE FREE. 30But what does the Scripture say? “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”*NoteCloseGenesis 21:10
31SO THEN, BROTHERS, NOT WE ARE OF [THE] SLAVE WOMAN CHILDREN BUT OF THE FREE; 31Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
