18FOR CERTAINLY <TO SHUT UP> <HE> HAD SHUT UP YAHWEH BEHIND EVERY WOMB OF [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF ABIMELECH ON [THE] MATTER OF SARAH [THE] WIFE OF ABRAHAM 18for on account of Abraham’s wife Sarah, the LORD had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household.
1AND YAHWEH HE VISITED <OBJ.> SARAH JUST AS HE HAD SAID AND HE DID YAHWEH TO SARAH JUST AS HE HAD SPOKEN The Birth of Isaac 1Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised.
2AND SHE CONCEIVED AND SHE BORE SARAH TO ABRAHAM A SON OF OLD AGE<S> HIS TO THE APPOINTED TIME WHICH HE HAD SPOKEN WITH <THE> HIM GOD 2So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised.
3AND HE CALLED ABRAHAM <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF SON HIS WHO HAD BEEN BORN TO <THE> HIM WHOM SHE HAD BORNE TO <THE> HIM SARAH ISAAC 3And Abraham gave the name Isaac*NoteCloseIsaac means he laughs. to the son Sarah bore to him.
4AND HE CIRCUMCISED ABRAHAM <OBJ.> ISAAC SON HIS A SON OF EIGHT DAYS JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED <OBJ.> HIM GOD 4When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.
5AND ABRAHAM [WAS] A SON OF ONE HUNDRED YEAR[S] WHEN WAS BORN TO <THE> HIM <OBJ.> ISAAC SON HIS 5Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
6AND SHE SAID SARAH LAUGHTER HE HAS MADE FOR <THE> ME GOD EVERYONE WHO HEARS HE WILL LAUGH TO <THE> ME 6Then Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears of this will laugh with me.”
7AND SHE SAID WHO? HAS HE SAID TO ABRAHAM SHE HAS SUCKLED CHILDREN SARAH FOR I HAVE BORNE A SON OF OLD AGE<S> HIS 7She added, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
8AND HE GREW UP THE CHILD AND HE WAS WEANED AND HE PREPARED ABRAHAM A FEAST GREAT ON [THE] DAY WAS WEANED <OBJ.> ISAAC 8So the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.
9AND SHE SAW SARAH <OBJ.> [THE] SON OF HAGAR THE EGYPTIAN WHOM SHE HAD BORNE TO ABRAHAM MOCKING Sarah Turns against Hagar (Galatians 4:21–30) 9But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking her son,*NoteCloseLXX and Vulgate; Hebrew lacks her son
10AND SHE SAID TO ABRAHAM DRIVE OUT THE SLAVE WOMAN <THE> THIS AND <OBJ.> SON HER FOR NOT HE WILL INHERIT [THE] SON OF THE SLAVE WOMAN <THE> THIS WITH SON MY WITH ISAAC 10and she said to Abraham, “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!”*NoteCloseCited in Galatians 4:30
11AND IT WAS DISPLEASING THE MATTER EXCEEDINGLY IN [THE] EYES OF ABRAHAM ON [THE] CAUSES OF SON HIS 11Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son Ishmael.
12AND HE SAID GOD TO ABRAHAM MAY NOT IT BE DISPLEASING IN VIEW YOUR ON THE LAD AND ON SLAVE WOMAN YOUR ALL THAT SHE SAYS TO YOU SARAH LISTEN TO VOICE HER FOR IN ISAAC IT WILL BE NAMED OF YOU OFFSPRING 12But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your maidservant. Listen to everything that Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.*NoteCloseCited in Romans 9:7 and Hebrews 11:18
13AND ALSO <OBJ.> [THE] SON OF THE SLAVE WOMAN INTO A NATION I WILL MAKE HIM FOR [IS] OFFSPRING YOUR HE 13But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
14AND HE ROSE EARLY ABRAHAM IN THE MORNING AND HE TOOK FOOD AND A SKIN OF WATER AND HE GAVE [THEM] TO HAGAR PLACING ON SHOULDER HER AND <OBJ.> THE BOY AND HE SENT AWAY HER AND SHE WENT AND SHE WANDERED IN [THE] WILDERNESS OF BEER SHEBA 14Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a skin of water put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her away with the boy. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.
15AND THEY WERE FINISHED THE WATER<S> FROM THE SKIN AND SHE THREW <OBJ.> THE BOY UNDER ONE OF THE BUSHES 15When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes.
16AND SHE WENT AND SHE SAT FOR <THE> HERSELF FROM BEFORE AT A DISTANCE LIKE [THE] SHOOTERS OF A BOW FOR SHE SAID MAY NOT I LOOK ON [THE] DEATH OF THE BOY AND SHE SAT FROM BEFORE AND SHE LIFTED UP <OBJ.> VOICE HER AND SHE WEPT 16Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and wept.*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX the child lifted up his voice and wept
17AND HE HEARD GOD <OBJ.> [THE] SOUND OF THE LAD AND HE CALLED [THE] ANGEL OF GOD TO HAGAR FROM THE HEAVENS AND HE SAID TO <THE> HER WHAT? [IS] TO <THE> YOU O HAGAR MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID FOR HE HAS HEARD GOD <TO> [THE] SOUND OF THE LAD AT WHERE HE [IS] THERE 17Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven “What is wrong Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies.
18ARISE LIFT UP <OBJ.> THE LAD AND TAKE HOLD <OBJ.> HAND YOUR ON <THE> HIM FOR INTO A NATION GREAT I WILL MAKE HIM 18Get up, lift up the boy and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
19AND HE OPENED GOD <OBJ.> EYES HER AND SHE SAW A WELL OF WATER AND SHE WENT AND SHE FILLED <OBJ.> THE SKIN WATER AND SHE GAVE A DRINK TO <OBJ.> THE LAD 19Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
20AND HE WAS GOD WITH THE LAD AND HE GREW UP AND HE DWELT IN THE WILDERNESS AND HE WAS A SHOOTER A BOWMAN 20And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer.
21AND HE DWELT IN [THE] WILDERNESS OF PARAN AND SHE TOOK FOR <THE> HIM MOTHER HIS A WIFE FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 21And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
22AND IT WAS AT THE TIME <THE> THAT AND HE SAID ABIMELECH AND PHICOL [THE] COMMANDER OF ARMY HIS TO ABRAHAM <TO> SAYING GOD [IS] WITH YOU IN ALL THAT YOU [ARE] DOING The Covenant at Beersheba 22At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
23AND THEREFORE SWEAR! TO <THE> ME BY GOD HERE IF YOU WILL DEAL FALSELY TO ME AND TO POSTERITY MY AND TO PROGENY MY ACCORDING TO THE LOYALTY WHICH I HAVE DONE WITH YOU YOU WILL DO WITH ME AND WITH THE LAND WHICH YOU HAVE SOJOURNED IN <THE> IT 23Now, therefore, swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
25AND HE REBUKED ABRAHAM <OBJ.> ABIMELECH ON [THE] CAUSES OF [THE] WELL OF <THE> WATER WHICH THEY HAD SEIZED [THE] SERVANTS OF ABIMELECH 25But when Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had seized,
26AND HE SAID ABIMELECH NOT I KNOW WHO? HAS HE DONE <OBJ.> THE THING <THE> THIS AND ALSO YOU NOT YOU TOLD TO <THE> ME AND ALSO I NOT I HEARD EXCEPT THIS DAY 26Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until today
27AND HE TOOK ABRAHAM SHEEP AND CATTLE AND HE GAVE [THEM] TO ABIMELECH AND THEY MADE [THE] TWO OF THEM A COVENANT 27So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant.
28AND HE SET ABRAHAM <OBJ.> SEVEN EWE-LAMBS OF THE FLOCK TO ALONE THEM 28Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock,
29AND HE SAID ABIMELECH TO ABRAHAM WHAT? [ARE] THEY SEVEN EWE-LAMBS <THE> THESE WHICH YOU HAVE SET TO ALONE THEM 29and Abimelech asked him, “Why have you set apart these seven ewe lambs?”
30AND HE SAID THAT <OBJ.> SEVEN EWE-LAMBS YOU WILL TAKE FROM HAND MY IN ORDER THAT IT MAY BECOME FOR <THE> ME <INTO> A WITNESS FOR I DUG <OBJ.> THE WELL <THE> THIS 30He replied “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I dug this well.”
31THERE- -FORE HE CALLED <TO> THE PLACE <THE> THAT BEER SHEBA FOR THERE THEY SWORE AN OATH [THE] TWO OF THEM 31So that place was called Beersheba,*NoteCloseBeersheba means well of seven or well of the oath. because it was there that the two of them swore an oath.
32AND THEY MADE A COVENANT AT BEER SHEBA AND HE AROSE ABIMELECH AND PHICOL [THE] COMMANDER OF ARMY HIS AND THEY RETURNED TO [THE] LAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES 32After they had made the covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
33AND HE PLANTED A TAMARISK TREE IN BEER SHEBA AND HE CALLED THERE ON [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF PERPETUITY 33And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.*NoteCloseHebrew El-Olam
34AND HE SOJOURNED ABRAHAM IN [THE] LAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES DAYS MANY 34And Abraham resided in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
