21NOT I DO SET ASIDE THE GRACE <THE> OF GOD; IF FOR THROUGH [THE] LAW RIGHTEOUSNESS [IS], THEN CHRIST FOR NAUGHT DIED. 21I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
1O FOOLISH GALATIANS! WHO YOU HAS BEWITCHED THE TRUTH NOT TO OBEY WHOSE BEFORE EYES JESUS CHRIST WAS PUBLICLY PORTRAYED AMONG YOU [AS] CRUCIFIED? Faith and Belief (James 2:14–26) 1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.
2THIS ONLY I WISH TO LEARN FROM YOU; BY WORKS OF [THE] LAW THE SPIRIT DID YOU RECEIVE OR BY HEARING OF FAITH? 2I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
3SO FOOLISH ARE YOU? HAVING BEGUN IN [THE] SPIRIT NOW IN [THE] FLESH ARE YOU BEING PERFECTED? 3Are you so foolish? After starting in the Spirit, are you now finishing in the flesh?
4SO MANY THINGS DID YOU SUFFER IN VAIN? IF INDEED EVEN IN VAIN! 4Have you suffered so much for nothing, if it really was for nothing?
5THE [ONE] THEREFORE SUPPLYING TO YOU THE SPIRIT AND WORKING MIRACLES AMONG YOU, [IS IT] OUT OF WORKS OF THE LAW OR OUT OF HEARING OF FAITH? 5Does God lavish His Spirit on you and work miracles among you because you practice the law, or because you hear and believe?
6EVEN AS ABRAHAM BELIEVED <THE> IN GOD AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. 6So also, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”*NoteCloseGenesis 15:6
7DO KNOW THEN THAT THOSE OF FAITH THESE SONS ARE OF ABRAHAM. 7Understand, then, that those who have faith are sons of Abraham.
8HAVING FORESEEN THEN THE SCRIPTURE THAT BY FAITH JUSTIFIES THE GENTILES <THE> GOD, FORETOLD THE GOSPEL <THE> TO ABRAHAM THAT WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU ALL THE NATIONS. 8The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and foretold the gospel to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”*NoteCloseSee Genesis 12:3, Genesis 18:18, and Genesis 22:18.
9SO THEN THOSE OF FAITH ARE BLESSED ALONG WITH THE BELIEVING ABRAHAM. 9So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
10AS MANY AS FOR OF WORKS OF [THE] LAW ARE, UNDER A CURSE ARE; IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN FOR THAT CURSED [IS] EVERYONE WHO NOT DOES CONTINUE IN ALL THINGS WHICH WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW <THE> TO DO THEM. Christ Has Redeemed Us 10All who rely on works of the law are under a curse. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”*NoteCloseDeuteronomy 27:26 (see also LXX)
11FOR NOW BY [THE] LAW NO [ONE] IS JUSTIFIED BEFORE <THE> GOD [IS] EVIDENT, BECAUSE THE RIGHTEOUS BY FAITH WILL LIVE; 11Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.”*NoteCloseHabakkuk 2:4
12<THE> AND THE LAW NOT IS OF FAITH RATHER THE [ONE] HAVING DONE THESE THINGS MAN WILL LIVE BY THEM. 12The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.”*NoteCloseLeviticus 18:5; see also Ezekiel 20:11, 13, and 21.
13CHRIST US REDEEMED FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW HAVING BECOME FOR US A CURSE; SINCE IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN FOR: CURSED [IS] EVERYONE WHO IS HANGING ON A TREE; 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”*NoteCloseDeuteronomy 21:23 (see also LXX)
14SO THAT TO THE GENTILES THE BLESSING <THE> OF ABRAHAM MAY BECOME IN CHRIST JESUS SO THAT THE PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT WE MAY RECEIVE THROUGH <THE> FAITH. 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham*NoteCloseLiterally the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
15BROTHERS, ACCORDING TO MAN I AM SPEAKING. EVEN OF MAN RATIFIED A COVENANT NO [ONE] SETS ASIDE OR ADDS THERETO. The Purpose of the Law (Romans 7:1–6) 15Brothers, let me put this in human terms. Even a human covenant, once it is ratified, cannot be canceled or amended.
16<THE> AND TO ABRAHAM WERE SPOKEN THE PROMISES AND TO THE SEED OF HIM. NOT IT DOES SAY; AND <THE> TO SEEDS AS OF MANY BUT AS OF ONE; AND TO THE SEED OF YOU WHO IS CHRIST. 16The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say, “and to seeds, ” meaning many, but “and to your seed,”*NoteCloseGenesis 12:7; Genesis 13:15 meaning One, who is Christ.
17THIS NOW I SAY: [THE] COVENANT CONFIRMED BEFOREHAND BY <THE> GOD INTO CHRIST <THE> AFTERWARD FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTY YEARS HAVING COME [THE] LAW NOT DOES ANNUL SO AS <THE> TO NULLIFY THE PROMISE. 17What I mean is this: The law that came 430. years later does not revoke the covenant previously established by God, so as to nullify the promise.
18IF FOR BY [THE] LAW [IS] THE INHERITANCE NO LONGER BY A PROMISE; <THE> BUT TO ABRAHAM THROUGH A PROMISE HAS GRANTED [IT] <THE> GOD. 18For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God freely granted it to Abraham through a promise.
19WHY THEN THE LAW? <THE> TRANSGRESSIONS BECAUSE OF IT WAS ADDED UNTIL THAT MAY HAVE COME THE SEED TO WHOM PROMISE HAS BEEN MADE, HAVING BEEN ORDAINED THROUGH ANGELS IN [THE] HAND OF A MEDIATOR. 19Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions, until the arrival of the seed to whom the promise referred. It was administered through angels by a mediator.
20<THE> HOWEVER A MEDIATOR OF ONE [PERSON] NOT IS, <THE> BUT GOD ONE IS. 20A mediator is unnecessary, however, for only one party; but God is one.
21THE THEREFORE LAW [IS] CONTRARY TO THE PROMISES <THE> OF GOD? NEVER WOULD IT BE! IF FOR WAS GIVEN A LAW WHICH IS BEING ABLE TO IMPART LIFE, INDEED FROM [THE] LAW THEN WOULD WAS EMERGING <THE> RIGHTEOUSNESS; 21Is the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law.
22BUT IMPRISONED THE SCRIPTURE <THE> [THINGS] ALL UNDER SIN, SO THAT THE PROMISE BY FAITH FROM JESUS CHRIST MAY BE GIVEN TO THOSE BELIEVING. 22But the Scripture pronounces all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
23BEFORE <THE> NOW COMING <THE> FAITH UNDER [THE] LAW WE WERE HELD IN CUSTODY BEING LOCKED UP UNTIL WHICH IS BEING SOON FAITH TO BE REVEALED. 23Before this faith came, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.
24SO THAT THE LAW TRAINER OF US HAS BECOME UNTO CHRIST, SO THAT BY FAITH WE MAY BE JUSTIFIED; 24So the law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25WHEN WAS COMING NOW THE FAITH NO LONGER UNDER A TRAINER WE ARE. 25Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.
26ALL FOR SONS OF GOD YOU ARE THROUGH <THE> FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS; Sons through Faith in Christ 26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27AS MANY AS FOR INTO CHRIST YOU WERE BAPTIZED, CHRIST YOU HAVE PUT ON. 27For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28NEITHER THERE IS JEW NOR GREEK, NEITHER THERE IS SLAVE NOR FREE, NEITHER THERE IS MALE AND FEMALE; ALL FOR YOU YOURSELVES ONE ARE IN CHRIST JESUS. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29IF NOW YOU YOURSELVES [ARE] CHRIST’S, THEN <THE> ABRAHAM’S SEED YOU ARE, AND ACCORDING TO [THE] PROMISE HEIRS. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.
