16AND ABRAM [WAS] A SON OF EIGHTY YEAR[S] AND SIX YEARS WHEN BORE HAGAR <OBJ.> ISHMAEL TO ABRAM 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
1AND HE WAS ABRAM A SON OF NINETY YEAR[S] AND NINE YEARS AND HE APPEARED YAHWEH TO ABRAM AND HE SAID TO HIM I [AM] GOD ALMIGHTY WALK ABOUT <TO> BEFORE ME AND BE BLAMELESS Abraham to Father Many Nations 1When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty.*NoteCloseHebrew El-Shaddai Walk before Me and be blameless.
2SO LET ME MAKE COVENANT MY BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU SO I MAY INCREASE <OBJ.> YOU WITH MUCHNESS MUCHNESS 2I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly
3AND HE FELL ABRAM ON FACE HIS AND HE SPOKE WITH HIM GOD <TO> SAYING 3Then Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,
4I HERE! COVENANT MY [IS] WITH YOU AND YOU WILL BECOME <INTO> A FATHER OF A MULTITUDE OF NATIONS 4“As for Me, this is My covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.
5AND NOT IT WILL BE CALLED AGAIN <OBJ.> NAME YOUR ABRAM AND IT WILL BE NAME YOUR ABRAHAM FOR A FATHER OF A MULTITUDE OF NATIONS I HAVE MADE YOU 5No longer will you be called Abram,*NoteCloseAbram means exalted father. but your name will be Abraham,*NoteCloseAbraham means father of many. for I have made you a father of many nations.*NoteCloseCited in Romans 4:17
6AND I WILL MAKE FRUITFUL <OBJ.> YOU WITH MUCHNESS MUCHNESS AND I WILL MAKE YOU INTO NATIONS AND KINGS FROM YOU THEY WILL COME OUT 6I will make you exceedingly fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you.
7AND I WILL ESTABLISH <OBJ.> COVENANT MY BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU AND BETWEEN OFFSPRING YOUR AFTER YOU FOR GENERATIONS THEIR TO A COVENANT OF PERPETUITY TO BECOME FOR <THE> YOU <INTO> GOD AND FOR OFFSPRING YOUR AFTER YOU 7I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
8AND I WILL GIVE TO YOU AND TO OFFSPRING YOUR AFTER YOU <OBJ.> [THE] LAND OF SOJOURNINGS YOUR <OBJ.> ALL [THE] LAND OF CANAAN TO A POSSESSION OF PERPETUITY AND I WILL BECOME FOR <THE> THEM <INTO> GOD 8And to you and your descendants I will give the land where you are residing— all the land of Canaan— as an eternal possession; and I will be their God.”
9AND HE SAID GOD TO ABRAHAM AND YOU <OBJ.> COVENANT MY YOU WILL KEEP YOU AND OFFSPRING YOUR AFTER YOU FOR GENERATIONS THEIR The Covenant of Circumcision 9God also said to Abraham, “You must keep My covenant— you and your descendants in the generations after you.
10THIS [IS] COVENANT MY WHICH YOU WILL KEEP BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU AND BETWEEN OFFSPRING YOUR AFTER YOU THEY WILL BE CIRCUMCISED OF YOU EVERY MALE 10This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you, which you are to keep: Every male among you must be circumcised.
11AND YOU WILL BE CIRCUMCISED <OBJ.> [THE] FLESH OF FORESKIN YOUR AND IT WILL BECOME <INTO> A SIGN OF [THE] COVENANT BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU 11You are to circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and this will be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.
12AND A SON OF EIGHT DAYS HE WILL BE CIRCUMCISED OF YOU EVERY MALE FOR GENERATIONS YOUR ONE BORN OF [THE] HOUSEHOLD AND A PURCHASE OF SILVER FROM EVERY SON OF FOREIGNNESS WHO NOT [IS] ONE OF OFFSPRING YOUR HE 12Generation after generation, every male must be circumcised when he is eight days old, including those born in your household and those purchased from a foreigner— even those who are not your offspring.
13DEFINITELY <BE CIRCUMCISED> HE WILL BE CIRCUMCISED [THE] ONE BORN OF HOUSEHOLD YOUR AND [THE] PURCHASE OF SILVER YOUR AND IT WILL BE COVENANT MY IN FLESH YOUR TO A COVENANT OF PERPETUITY 13Whether they are born in your household or purchased, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh will be an everlasting covenant.
14AND AN UNCIRCUMCISED MALE WHO NOT HE WILL BE CIRCUMCISED <OBJ.> [THE] FLESH OF FORESKIN HIS AND IT WILL BE CUT OFF THE PERSON <THE> THAT FROM KINSPEOPLE<S> ITS <OBJ.> COVENANT MY HE HAS BROKEN 14But if any male is not circumcised he will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
15AND HE SAID GOD TO ABRAHAM SARAI WIFE YOUR NOT YOU WILL CALL <OBJ.> NAME HER SARAI FOR [IS] SARAH NAME HER 15Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, do not call her Sarai, for her name is to be Sarah.*NoteCloseBoth Sarai and Sarah mean princess; the change in spelling may reflect the difference in dialect between Ur and Canaan.
16AND I WILL BLESS <OBJ.> HER AND ALSO I WILL GIVE FROM HER TO <THE> YOU A SON AND I WILL BLESS HER AND SHE WILL BECOME <INTO> NATIONS KINGS OF PEOPLES FROM HER THEY WILL BE 16And I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will descend from her.”
17AND HE FELL ABRAHAM ON FACE HIS AND HE LAUGHED AND HE SAID IN HEART HIS ¿ TO A SON OF ONE HUNDRED YEAR[S] WILL HE BE BORN AND OR? SARAH ¿ A DAUGHTER OF NINETY YEAR[S] WILL SHE BEAR A CHILD 17Abraham fell facedown Then he laughed and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah give birth at the age of ninety
18AND HE SAID ABRAHAM TO <THE> GOD IF ISHMAEL HE WILL LIVE <TO> BEFORE YOU 18And Abraham said to God, “O that Ishmael might live under Your blessing!”
19AND HE SAID GOD BUT SARAH WIFE YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO BEAR TO <THE> YOU A SON AND YOU WILL CALL <OBJ.> NAME HIS ISAAC AND I WILL ESTABLISH <OBJ.> COVENANT MY WITH HIM TO A COVENANT OF PERPETUITY FOR OFFSPRING HIS AFTER HIM 19But God replied, “Your wife Sarah will indeed bear you a son, and you are to name him Isaac.*NoteCloseIsaac means he laughs. I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
20AND TO ISHMAEL I HAVE HEARD YOU HERE! I WILL BLESS <OBJ.> HIM AND I WILL MAKE FRUITFUL <OBJ.> HIM AND I WILL MULTIPLY <OBJ.> HIM WITH MUCHNESS MUCHNESS TWO [PLUS] TEN PRINCES HE WILL FATHER AND I WILL MAKE HIM INTO A NATION GREAT 20As for Ishmael, I have heard you, and I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He will become the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.
21AND <OBJ.> COVENANT MY I WILL ESTABLISH WITH ISAAC WHOM SHE WILL BEAR TO <THE> YOU SARAH TO THE TIME <THE> THIS IN THE YEAR <THE> FOLLOWING 21But I will establish My covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year.”
22AND HE FINISHED TO SPEAK WITH HIM AND HE WENT UP GOD FROM WITH ABRAHAM 22When He had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.
23AND HE TOOK ABRAHAM <OBJ.> ISHMAEL SON HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL THOSE BORN OF HOUSEHOLD HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] PURCHASE OF SILVER HIS EVERY MALE AMONG [THE] MEN OF [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF ABRAHAM AND HE CIRCUMCISED <OBJ.> [THE] FLESH OF FORESKIN THEIR ON [THE] SUBSTANCE OF THE DAY <THE> THIS JUST AS HE HAD SPOKEN WITH HIM GOD 23On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or purchased with his money— every male among the members of Abraham’s household— and he circumcised them, just as God had told him.
24AND ABRAHAM [WAS] A SON OF NINETY AND NINE YEAR[S] WHEN WAS CIRCUMCISED HE [THE] FLESH OF FORESKIN HIS 24So Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,
25AND ISHMAEL SON HIS [WAS] A SON OF THIR- TEEN YEAR[S] WHEN WAS CIRCUMCISED HE <OBJ.> [THE] FLESH OF FORESKIN HIS 25and his son Ishmael was thirteen;
26ON [THE] SUBSTANCE OF THE DAY <THE> THIS HE WAS CIRCUMCISED ABRAHAM AND ISHMAEL SON HIS 26Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised on the same day.
27AND ALL [THE] MEN OF HOUSEHOLD HIS ONE BORN OF [THE] HOUSEHOLD AND A PURCHASE OF SILVER FROM WITH A SON OF FOREIGNNESS THEY WERE CIRCUMCISED WITH HIM 27And all the men of Abraham’s household— both servants born in his household and those purchased from foreigners were circumcised with him.
