27AND ALL [THE] MEN OF HOUSEHOLD HIS ONE BORN OF [THE] HOUSEHOLD AND A PURCHASE OF SILVER FROM WITH A SON OF FOREIGNNESS THEY WERE CIRCUMCISED WITH HIM 27And all the men of Abraham’s household— both servants born in his household and those purchased from foreigners were circumcised with him.
1AND HE APPEARED TO HIM YAHWEH AT [THE] GREAT TREES OF MAMRE AND HE [WAS] SITTING [THE] OPENING OF THE TENT WHEN [THE] HEAT OF THE DAY The Three Visitors 1Then the LORD appeared to Abraham by the Oaks*NoteCloseOr Terebinths or Great Trees of Mamre in the heat of the day, while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent.
2AND HE LIFTED UP EYES HIS AND HE SAW AND THERE! THREE MEN [WERE] STANDING WITH HIM AND HE SAW AND HE RAN TO MEET THEM FROM [THE] OPENING OF THE TENT AND HE BOWED DOWN [THE] GROUND TOWARDS 2And Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
3AND HE SAID LORD MY IF PLEASE I HAVE FOUND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR MAY NOT PLEASE YOU PASS BY FROM WITH SERVANT YOUR 3“My lord,” said Abraham, “if I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass your servant by.
4LET IT BE BROUGHT PLEASE A LITTLE OF WATER AND WASH FEET YOUR AND SUPPORT YOURSELF UNDER THE TREE 4Let a little water be brought, that you may wash your feet and rest yourselves under the tree.
5SO LET ME BRING A PIECE OF BREAD AND SUSTAIN <YOU> HEART YOUR AFTER YOU WILL PASS ON FOR SINCE <THUS> YOU HAVE PASSED BY AT SERVANT YOUR AND THEY SAID THUS YOU WILL DO JUST AS YOU HAVE SAID 5And I will bring a bit of bread so that you may refresh yourselves. This is why you have passed your servant’s way. After that, you may continue on your way “Yes,” they replied, “you may do as you have said.”
6AND HE HURRIED ABRAHAM THE TENT TOWARDS TO SARAH AND HE SAID BRING QUICKLY THREE SEAHS FLOUR FINE FLOUR KNEAD [IT] AND MAKE BREAD CAKES 6So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick! Prepare three seahs of fine flour,*NoteClose3 seahs is approximately 19.8 dry quarts or 21.9 liters (probably about 24.5 pounds or 11.1 kilograms of flour). knead it, and bake some bread.”
7AND TO THE HERD HE RAN ABRAHAM AND HE TOOK A YOUNG ONE OF [THE] HERD TENDER AND GOOD AND HE GAVE [IT] TO THE SERVANT AND HE HURRIED TO PREPARE <OBJ.> IT 7Meanwhile, Abraham ran to the herd, selected a tender and choice calf, and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.
8AND HE BROUGHT CURD<S> AND MILK AND [THE] YOUNG ONE OF THE HERD WHICH HE HAD PREPARED AND HE SET [IT] <TO> BEFORE THEM AND HE [WAS] STANDING WITH THEM UNDER THE TREE AND THEY ATE 8Then Abraham brought curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and he set them before the men and stood by them under the tree as they ate.
9AND THEY SAID TO HIM WHERE? [IS] SARAH WIFE YOUR AND HE SAID THERE! IN THE TENT Sarah Laughs at the Promise 9“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked. “There, in the tent,” he replied.
10AND HE SAID CERTAINLY <TO RETURN> I WILL RETURN TO YOU ABOUT THE TIME LIVING AND THERE! A SON [WILL BELONG] TO SARAH WIFE YOUR AND SARAH [WAS] LISTENING [THE] OPENING OF THE TENT AND IT [WAS] BEHIND HIM 10Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year and your wife Sarah will have a son!” Now Sarah was behind him, listening at the entrance to the tent.
11AND ABRAHAM AND SARAH [WERE] OLD [HAVING] COME IN <THE> DAYS IT HAD CEASED TO BE TO SARAH A WAY LIKE <THE> WOMEN 11And Abraham and Sarah were already old and well along in years; Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
12AND SHE LAUGHED SARAH IN INNER BEING HER <TO> SAYING AFTER AM WORN OUT I HAS IT BE[LONGED]? TO <THE> ME PLEASURE AND LORD MY HE IS OLD 12So she laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
13AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO ABRAHAM <TO> WHY? THIS DID SHE LAUGH SARAH <TO> SAYING ¿ ALSO REALLY WILL I BEAR A CHILD AND I I AM OLD 13And the LORD asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Can I really bear a child when I am old?’
14¿ IS IT [TOO] DIFFICULT FOR YAHWEH ANYTHING TO THE APPOINTED TIME I WILL RETURN TO YOU ABOUT THE TIME LIVING AND [WILL BELONG] TO SARAH A SON 14Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you— in about a year and Sarah will have a son.”*NoteCloseCited in Romans 9:9
15AND SHE DENIED SARAH <TO> SAYING NOT I LAUGHED FOR SHE WAS AFRAID AND HE SAID IN- DEED YOU LAUGHED 15But Sarah was afraid, so she denied it and said, “I did not laugh.” “No,” replied the LORD, “but you did laugh.”
16AND THEY AROSE FROM THERE THE MEN AND THEY LOOKED DOWN ON [THE] FACE OF SODOM AND ABRAHAM [WAS] WALKING WITH THEM TO SEND OFF THEM Abraham Intercedes for Sodom 16When the men got up to leave, they looked out over Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them off.
17AND YAHWEH HE SAID ¿ [BE] CONCEALING [WILL] I FROM ABRAHAM [THAT] WHICH I [AM] ABOUT TO DO 17And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
18AND ABRAHAM CERTAINLY <TO BECOME> HE WILL BECOME <INTO> A NATION GREAT AND MIGHTY AND THEY WILL BE BLESSED BY <THE> HIM ALL [THE] NATIONS OF THE EARTH 18Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed.
19FOR I HAVE KNOWN HIM SO THAT THAT HE MAY COMMAND <OBJ.> CHILDREN HIS AND <OBJ.> HOUSEHOLD HIS AFTER HIM AND THEY WILL KEEP [THE] WAY OF YAHWEH BY DOING RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUSTICE SO THAT WILL BRING YAHWEH ON ABRAHAM <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE HAS SPOKEN ON HIM 19For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised
20AND HE SAID YAHWEH [THE] OUTCRY OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH FOR IT IS GREAT AND SIN THEIR THAT IT IS HEAVY EXCEEDINGLY 20Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great. Because their sin is so grievous,
21I WILL GO DOWN PLEASE SO I MAY SEE ¿ ACCORDING TO OUTCRY ITS THAT <IT> HAS COME TO ME HAVE THEY DONE COMPLETION AND IF NOT I WILL KNOW 21I will go down to see if their actions fully justify the outcry that has reached Me. If not, I will find out.”
22AND THEY TURNED AWAY FROM THERE THE MEN AND THEY WENT SODOM TOWARDS AND ABRAHAM STILL [WAS] HE STANDING <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH 22And the two men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD.
23AND HE DREW NEAR ABRAHAM AND HE SAID ¿ ALSO WILL YOU SWEEP AWAY [THE] RIGHTEOUS WITH [THE] WICKED 23Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
24PERHAPS THERE [ARE] FIFTY RIGHTEOUS [PEOPLE] IN [THE] MIDST OF THE CITY ¿ ALSO WILL YOU SWEEP [IT] AWAY AND NOT WILL YOU FORGIVE? <TO> THE PLACE FOR [THE] SAKE OF FIFTY THE RIGHTEOUS [PEOPLE] WHO [ARE] IN MIDST ITS 24What if there are fifty righteous ones in the city? Will You really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones who are there?
25FAR BE IT TO <THE> YOU FROM DOING ACCORDING TO THE MANNER <THE> THIS TO PUT TO DEATH [THE] RIGHTEOUS WITH [THE] WICKED AND IT WILL BE AS THE RIGHTEOUS [PERSON] AS THE WICKED [PERSON] FAR BE IT TO <THE> YOU ¿ [THE] JUDGE OF ALL THE EARTH NOT WILL HE DO JUSTICE 25Far be it from You to do such a thing— to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”
26AND HE SAID YAHWEH IF I WILL FIND IN SODOM FIFTY RIGHTEOUS [PEOPLE] IN [THE] MIDST OF THE CITY AND I WILL FORGIVE <TO> ALL THE PLACE FOR SAKE OF THEM 26So the LORD replied, “If I find fifty righteous ones within the city of Sodom, on their account I will spare the whole place.”
27AND HE ANSWERED ABRAHAM AND HE SAID HERE! PLEASE I HAVE UNDERTAKEN TO SPEAK TO [THE] LORD AND I [AM] DUST AND ASH[ES] 27Then Abraham answered, “Now that I have ventured to speak to the Lord— though I am but dust and ashes—
28PERHAPS THEY WILL LACK! FIFTY THE RIGHTEOUS [PEOPLE] FIVE ¿ WILL YOU DESTROY FOR FIVE <OBJ.> ALL THE CITY AND HE SAID NOT I WILL DESTROY [IT] IF I WILL FIND THERE FORTY AND FIVE 28suppose the fifty righteous ones lack five. Will You destroy the whole city for the lack of five?” He replied, “If I find forty-five there, I will not destroy it.”
29AND HE REPEATED AGAIN TO SPEAK TO HIM AND HE SAID PERHAPS THEY WILL BE FOUND! THERE FORTY AND HE SAID NOT I WILL DO [IT] FOR SAKE OF THE FORTY 29Once again Abraham spoke to the LORD, “Suppose forty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the forty, I will not do it.”
30AND HE SAID MAY NOT PLEASE IT BURN TO [THE] LORD AND LET ME SPEAK PERHAPS THEY WILL BE FOUND! THERE THIRTY AND HE SAID NOT I WILL DO [IT] IF I WILL FIND THERE THIRTY 30Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will not do it.”
31AND HE SAID HERE! PLEASE I HAVE UNDERTAKEN TO SPEAK TO [THE] LORD PERHAPS THEY WILL BE FOUND! THERE TWENTY AND HE SAID NOT I WILL DESTROY [IT] FOR SAKE OF THE TWENTY 31And Abraham said, “Now that I have ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose twenty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the twenty, I will not destroy it.”
32AND HE SAID MAY NOT PLEASE IT BURN TO [THE] LORD AND LET ME SPEAK ONLY THIS TIME PERHAPS THEY WILL BE FOUND! THERE TEN AND HE SAID NOT I WILL DESTROY [IT] FOR SAKE OF THE TEN 32Finally, Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will not destroy it.”
33AND HE WENT YAHWEH JUST AS HE HAD FINISHED TO SPEAK TO ABRAHAM AND ABRAHAM HE RETURNED TO PLACE HIS 33When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, He departed, and Abraham returned home.
