33AND HE WENT YAHWEH JUST AS HE HAD FINISHED TO SPEAK TO ABRAHAM AND ABRAHAM HE RETURNED TO PLACE HIS 33When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, He departed, and Abraham returned home.
1AND THEY CAME [THE] TWO THE ANGELS SODOM TOWARDS IN THE EVENING AND LOT [WAS] SITTING IN [THE] GATE OF SODOM AND HE SAW [THEM] LOT AND HE AROSE TO MEET THEM AND HE BOWED DOWN FACE [THE] GROUND TOWARDS Lot Welcomes the Angels (Judges 19:1–30) 1Now the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown,
2AND HE SAID HERE! PLEASE O LORDS MY TURN ASIDE PLEASE TO [THE] HOUSE OF SERVANT YOUR AND STAY [THE] NIGHT AND WASH FEET YOUR AND YOU WILL RISE EARLY AND YOU WILL GO TO WAY YOUR AND THEY SAID IN- DEED IN THE OPEN PLACE WE WILL STAY [THE] NIGHT 2and said,. My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”
3AND HE URGED <IN> <THE> THEM EXCEEDINGLY AND THEY TURNED ASIDE TO HIM AND THEY WENT INTO HOUSE HIS AND HE PREPARED FOR <THE> THEM A FEAST AND UNLEAVENED BREAD<S> HE BAKED AND THEY ATE 3But Lot insisted so strongly that they followed him into his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
4BEFORE THEY LAY DOWN AND [THE] MEN OF THE CITY [THE] MEN OF SODOM THEY SURROUNDED <ON> THE HOUSE FROM YOUNG MAN AND UNTO OLD [MAN] ALL THE PEOPLE FROM [THE] END 4Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
5AND THEY CALLED TO LOT AND THEY SAID TO <THE> HIM WHERE? [ARE] THE MEN WHO THEY CAME TO YOU THIS NIGHT BRING THEM TO US SO LET US KNOW <OBJ.> THEM 5They called out to Lot, saying “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!”
6AND HE WENT OUT TO THEM LOT THE ENTRANCE TOWARDS AND THE DOOR HE CLOSED BEHIND HIM 6Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him.
7AND HE SAID MAY NOT PLEASE O BROTHERS MY YOU DO EVIL 7“Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing!
8HERE! PLEASE [BELONG] TO <THE> ME TWO DAUGHTERS WHO NOT THEY HAVE KNOWN A MAN LET ME BRING OUT PLEASE <OBJ.> THEM TO YOU AND DO TO <THE> THEM ACCORDING TO THE GOOD IN VIEW YOUR ONLY TO THE MEN <THE> THESE MAY NOT YOU DO ANYTHING FOR SINCE <THUS> THEY HAVE COME IN [THE] SHADOW OF ROOF MY 8Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them as you please. But do not do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
9AND THEY SAID APPROACH BEYOND AND THEY SAID THE ONE HE CAME TO SOJOURN AND HE HAS JUDGED CONTINUOUSLY <TO JUDGE> NOW WE WILL DO HARM TO <THE> YOU MORE THAN THEM AND THEY URGED <IN> THE MAN <IN> LOT EXCEEDINGLY AND THEY APPROACHED TO BREAK DOWN THE DOOR 9“Get out of the way they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door.
10AND THEY STRETCHED OUT THE MEN <OBJ.> HAND THEIR AND THEY BROUGHT <OBJ.> LOT TO THEM THE HOUSE TOWARDS AND <OBJ.> THE DOOR THEY CLOSED 10But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
11AND <OBJ.> THE MEN WHO [WERE] [THE] ENTRANCE OF THE HOUSE THEY STRUCK WITH <THE> SUDDEN BLINDNESS FROM SMALL AND UNTO GREAT AND THEY BECAME WEARY TO FIND THE ENTRANCE 11And they struck the men at the entrance, young and old, with blindness, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the door.
12AND THEY SAID THE MEN TO LOT YET WHO? [BELONGS] TO <THE> YOU HERE A SON-IN-LAW AND SONS YOUR AND DAUGHTERS YOUR AND ALL WHO [BELONG] TO <THE> YOU IN THE CITY BRING OUT FROM THE PLACE Lot Flees to Zoar 12Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here— a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
13FOR [ARE] ABOUT TO DESTROY WE <OBJ.> THE PLACE <THE> THIS FOR IT IS GREAT OUTCRY THEIR WITH [THE] FACE OF YAHWEH AND HE HAS SENT US YAHWEH TO DESTROY IT 13because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”
14AND HE WENT OUT LOT AND HE SPOKE TO SONS-IN-LAW HIS [WHO WERE] ABOUT TO TAKE <OF> DAUGHTERS HIS AND HE SAID ARISE GO OUT FROM THE PLACE <THE> THIS FOR [IS] ABOUT TO DESTROY YAHWEH <OBJ.> THE CITY AND HE WAS LIKE [ONE WHO] JESTS IN [THE] EYES OF SONS-IN-LAW HIS 14So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
15AND WHEN THE DAWN IT CAME UP AND THEY URGED THE ANGELS <IN> LOT <TO> SAYING ARISE TAKE <OBJ.> WIFE YOUR AND <OBJ.> [THE] TWO DAUGHTERS YOUR WHO ARE FOUND LEST YOU SHOULD BE SWEPT AWAY IN [THE] PUNISHMENT OF THE CITY 15At daybreak the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.”
16AND HE DELAYED AND THEY TOOK HOLD THE MEN ON HAND HIS AND ON [THE] HAND OF WIFE HIS AND ON [THE] HAND OF [THE] TWO DAUGHTERS HIS IN [THE] MERCY OF YAHWEH TOWARDS HIM AND THEY BROUGHT OUT HIM AND THEY PLACED HIM FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF THE CITY 16But when Lot hesitated, the men grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city, because of the LORD’s compassion for them.
17AND IT WAS WHEN BROUGHT OUT THEY <OBJ.> THEM THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS AND HE SAID ESCAPE ON LIFE YOUR MAY NOT YOU LOOK BEHIND YOU AND MAY NOT YOU STOP IN ALL THE VALLEY THE HILL COUNTRY TOWARDS ESCAPE LEST YOU SHOULD BE SWEPT AWAY 17As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
19HERE! PLEASE HE HAS FOUND SERVANT YOUR FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR AND YOU HAVE MADE GREAT LOYALTY YOUR WHICH YOU HAVE DONE WITH ME BY PRESERVING ALIVE <OBJ.> LIFE MY AND I NOT I AM ABLE TO ESCAPE THE HILL COUNTRY TOWARDS LEST IT SHOULD CLING TO ME THE CALAMITY AND I WILL DIE 19Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
20HERE! PLEASE THE CITY <THE> THIS [IS] NEAR TO FLEE THERE TOWARDS AND IT [IS] A SMALL PLACE LET ME ESCAPE PLEASE THERE TOWARDS ¿ NOT A SMALL PLACE [IS] IT SO IT MAY LIVE LIFE MY 20Look, there is a town nearby where I can flee, and it is a small place. Please let me flee there— is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
21AND HE SAID TO HIM HERE! I LIFT UP FACE YOUR ALSO TO THE MATTER <THE> THIS TO NOT TO OVERTHROW I <OBJ.> THE CITY WHICH YOU HAVE SPOKEN 21“Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not demolish the town you indicate.
22HURRY ESCAPE THERE TOWARDS FOR NOT I WILL BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING UNTIL GOING YOU THERE TOWARDS THERE- -FORE SOMEONE CALLED [THE] NAME OF THE CITY ZOAR 22Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.*NoteCloseZoar means small.
23THE SUN IT CAME OUT OVER THE EARTH AND LOT HE WENT ZOAR TOWARDS 23And by the time the sun had risen over the land, Lot had reached Zoar.
24AND YAHWEH HE CAUSED TO RAIN ON SODOM AND ON GOMORRAH SULFUR AND FIRE FROM WITH YAHWEH FROM THE HEAVENS The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:20–37) 24Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah— from the LORD out of the heavens.
25AND HE OVERTHREW <OBJ.> THE CITIES <THE> THESE AND <OBJ.> ALL THE VALLEY AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE CITIES AND [THE] GROWTH OF THE GROUND 25Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.
26AND SHE LOOKED WIFE HIS FROM BEHIND HIM AND SHE WAS A PILLAR OF SALT 26But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
27AND HE ROSE EARLY ABRAHAM IN THE MORNING TO THE PLACE WHERE HE HAD STOOD THERE WITH [THE] FACE OF YAHWEH 27Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD.
28AND HE LOOKED DOWN ON [THE] FACE OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH AND ON ALL [THE] FACE OF [THE] LAND OF THE VALLEY AND HE SAW AND THERE! IT WENT UP [THE] SMOKE OF THE LAND LIKE [THE] SMOKE OF <THE> FURNACE 28He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.
29AND IT WAS WHEN DESTROYED GOD <OBJ.> [THE] CITIES OF THE VALLEY AND HE REMEMBERED GOD <OBJ.> ABRAHAM AND HE SENT OUT <OBJ.> LOT FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE OVERTHROW WHEN OVERTHREW <OBJ.> THE CITIES WHICH HE HAD DWELT IN <THE> THEM LOT 29So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where he had lived.
30AND HE WENT UP LOT FROM ZOAR AND HE DWELT IN THE HILL COUNTRY AND [THE] TWO DAUGHTERS HIS [WERE] WITH HIM FOR HE WAS AFRAID TO DWELL IN ZOAR AND HE DWELT IN THE CAVE HE AND [THE] TWO DAUGHTERS HIS Lot and His Daughters 30Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains— for he was afraid to stay in Zoar— where they lived in a cave.
31AND <SHE> SAID THE FIRSTBORN TO THE YOUNG FATHER OUR HE IS OLD AND [IS] A MAN THERE NOT IN THE LAND TO GO ON US ACCORDING TO [THE] WAY OF ALL THE EARTH 31One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us, as is the custom over all the earth.
32COME! LET US MAKE DRINK <OBJ.> FATHER OUR WINE AND LET US LIE WITH HIM SO WE MAY PRESERVE ALIVE FROM FATHER OF OUR SPRING 32Come, let us get our father drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
33AND THEY MADE DRINK <OBJ.> FATHER THEIR WINE IN THE NIGHT THAT AND SHE CAME THE FIRSTBORN AND SHE LAY WITH <OBJ.> FATHER HER AND NOT HE KNEW WHEN LAY DOWN SHE AND WHEN AROSE SHE 33So that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
34AND IT WAS FROM [THE] NEXT DAY AND SHE SAID THE FIRSTBORN TO THE YOUNG HERE! I LAY WITH LAST NIGHT <OBJ.> FATHER MY LET US MAKE DRINK HIM WINE ALSO THIS NIGHT AND GO LIE WITH HIM SO WE MAY PRESERVE ALIVE FROM FATHER OF OUR SPRING 34The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let us get him drunk with wine again tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
35AND THEY MADE DRINK ALSO IN THE NIGHT <THE> THAT <OBJ.> FATHER THEIR WINE AND SHE AROSE THE YOUNG [ONE] AND SHE LAY WITH HIM AND NOT HE KNEW WHEN LAY DOWN SHE AND WHEN AROSE SHE 35So again that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
36AND THEY CONCEIVED [THE] TWO [THE] DAUGHTERS OF LOT FROM FATHER THEIR 36Thus both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.
37AND SHE BORE THE FIRSTBORN A SON AND SHE CALLED NAME HIS MOAB HE [IS] [THE] ANCESTOR OF MOAB UNTIL THIS DAY 37The older daughter gave birth to a son and named him Moab.*NoteCloseMoab sounds like the Hebrew for from my father. He is the father of the Moabites of today.
38AND THE YOUNG ALSO SHE SHE BORE A SON AND SHE CALLED NAME HIS BEN- AMMI HE [IS] [THE] ANCESTOR OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON UNTIL THIS DAY 38The younger daughter also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi.*NoteCloseBen-ammi means son of my people. He is the father of the Ammonites of today.
