25AND THEY WERE BOTH OF THEM NAKED THE MAN AND WIFE HIS AND NOT THEY WERE ASHAMED 25And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
1AND THE SNAKE <IT> WAS SHREWD MORE THAN EVERY <THE> ANIMAL OF THE FIELD WHICH HE HAD MADE YAHWEH GOD AND HE SAID TO THE WOMAN INDEED? THAT DID HE SAY GOD NOT YOU MUST EAT FROM ANY <THE> TREE OF THE GARDEN The Serpent’s Deception (Romans 5:12–21) 1Now the serpent*NoteCloseHebrew nachash, translated in this chapter as serpent, is translated in most cases as snake. was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’”
2AND SHE SAID THE WOMAN TO THE SNAKE FROM [THE] FRUIT OF [THE] TREE[S] OF THE GARDEN WE WILL EAT 2The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,
3AND FROM [THE] FRUIT OF THE TREE WHICH [IS] IN [THE] MIDDLE OF THE GARDEN HE SAID GOD NOT YOU MUST EAT FROM IT AND NOT YOU WILL TOUCH <IN> <THE> IT LEST YOU SHOULD DIE! 3but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”
4AND HE SAID THE SNAKE TO THE WOMAN NOT CERTAINLY <TO DIE> YOU WILL DIE! 4“You will not surely die the serpent told the woman.
5FOR [IS] KNOWING GOD THAT ON [THE] DAY EAT YOU FROM IT AND THEY WILL BE OPENED EYES YOUR AND YOU WILL BE LIKE GOD [THOSE WHO] KNOW <OF> GOOD AND EVIL 5“For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6AND SHE SAW THE WOMAN THAT [WAS] GOOD THE TREE FOR FOOD AND THAT [WAS] A DELIGHT IT TO THE EYES AND [IT WAS] DESIRABLE THE TREE TO MAKE WISE AND SHE TOOK SOME OF FRUIT ITS AND SHE ATE AND SHE GAVE [IT] ALSO TO HUSBAND HER WITH HER AND HE ATE 6When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
7AND THEY WERE OPENED [THE] EYES OF BOTH OF THEM AND THEY KNEW THAT [WERE] NAKED THEY AND THEY SEWED TOGETHER LEAFAGE OF A FIG TREE AND THEY MADE FOR <THE> THEMSELVES LOIN COVERINGS 7And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.
8AND THEY HEARD <OBJ.> [THE] SOUND OF YAHWEH GOD WALKING ABOUT IN THE GARDEN TO [THE] WIND OF THE DAY AND HE HID HIMSELF THE MAN AND WIFE HIS FROM BEFORE YAHWEH GOD IN AMONG [THE] TREE[S] OF THE GARDEN God Arraigns Adam and Eve 8Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze*NoteCloseOr at the breezy (time); Hebrew unto the Ruach of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9AND HE CALLED YAHWEH GOD TO THE MAN AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM WHERE [ARE]? YOU 9But the LORD God called out to the man “Where are you?”
10AND HE SAID <OBJ.> SOUND YOUR I HEARD IN THE GARDEN AND I WAS AFRAID FOR [WAS] NAKED I AND I HID MYSELF 10“I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
11AND HE SAID WHO? DID HE TELL TO <THE> YOU THAT [WERE] NAKED YOU ¿ FROM THE TREE WHICH I COMMANDED YOU TO NOT TO EAT FROM IT HAVE YOU EATEN 11“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat
12AND HE SAID THE MAN THE WOMAN WHOM YOU PUT WITH ME SHE SHE GAVE TO <THE> ME FROM THE TREE AND I ATE 12And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13AND HE SAID YAHWEH GOD TO THE WOMAN WHAT? THIS HAVE YOU DONE AND SHE SAID THE WOMAN THE SNAKE <IT> DECEIVED ME AND I ATE 13Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied, “and I ate.”
14AND HE SAID YAHWEH GOD TO THE SNAKE FOR YOU HAVE DONE THIS [ARE] CURSED YOU MORE THAN ALL <THE> LIVESTOCK AND MORE THAN EVERY <THE> ANIMAL OF THE FIELD ON BELLY YOUR YOU WILL GO AND DUST YOU WILL EAT ALL [THE] DAYS OF LIFE YOUR The Fate of the Serpent 14So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
15AND ENMITY I WILL PUT BETWEEN YOU AND BETWEEN THE WOMAN AND BETWEEN OFFSPRING YOUR AND BETWEEN OFFSPRING HER HE HE WILL BRUISE YOU HEAD AND YOU YOU WILL BRUISE HIM HEEL 15And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.*NoteCloseOr He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel. The same Hebrew root for crush, bruise, or strike appears twice in this verse. ”
16TO THE WOMAN HE SAID CERTAINLY <TO INCREASE> I WILL INCREASE PAIN YOUR AND PREGNANCY YOUR WITH PAIN YOU WILL BEAR CHILDREN AND [WILL BE] TO HUSBAND YOUR DESIRE YOUR AND HE HE WILL RULE OVER <THE> YOU The Punishment of Mankind 16To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband,*NoteCloseOr You will desire to control your husband and he will rule over you.”
17AND TO ADAM HE SAID FOR YOU LISTENED TO [THE] VOICE OF WIFE YOUR AND YOU ATE FROM THE TREE WHICH I COMMANDED YOU <TO> SAYING NOT YOU MUST EAT FROM IT [IS] CURSED THE GROUND FOR SAKE OF YOU IN PAIN YOU WILL EAT IT ALL [THE] DAYS OF LIFE YOUR 17And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat cursed is the ground because of you; through toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
18AND THORN[S] AND THISTLE[S] <IT> WILL CAUSE TO SPROUT FOR <THE> YOU AND YOU WILL EAT <OBJ.> [THE] VEGETATION OF THE FIELD 18Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19BY [THE] SWEAT OF FACE YOUR YOU WILL EAT FOOD UNTIL RETURN YOU TO THE GROUND FOR FROM IT YOU WERE TAKEN FOR [ARE] DUST YOU AND TO DUST YOU WILL RETURN 19By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground— because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
20AND HE CALLED THE MAN [THE] NAME OF WIFE HIS EVE FOR SHE SHE WAS [THE] MOTHER OF EVERY LIVING [PERSON] 20And Adam named his wife Eve,*NoteCloseEve sounds like the Hebrew for giving life or living. because she would be the mother of all the living.
21AND HE MADE YAHWEH GOD FOR ADAM AND FOR WIFE HIS GARMENTS OF SKIN AND HE CLOTHED THEM The Expulsion from Paradise 21And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
22AND HE SAID YAHWEH GOD HERE! THE MAN HE HAS BECOME LIKE ONE OF US BY KNOWING GOOD AND EVIL AND THEREFORE LEST HE SHOULD STRETCH OUT HAND HIS AND HE WILL TAKE ALSO FROM [THE] TREE OF <THE> LIFE AND HE WILL EAT AND HE WILL LIVE FOR EVER 22Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...”
23AND HE SENT OUT HIM YAHWEH GOD FROM [THE] GARDEN OF EDEN TO TILL <OBJ.> THE GROUND WHERE HE WAS TAKEN FROM THERE 23Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24AND HE DROVE OUT <OBJ.> THE MAN AND HE CAUSED TO DWELL FROM EAST OF [THE] GARDEN OF EDEN <OBJ.> THE CHERUBIM AND <OBJ.> [THE] FLAME OF THE SWORD <THE> WHIRLING TO GUARD <OBJ.> [THE] WAY OF [THE] TREE OF <THE> LIFE 24So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life.
