43AND HE INCREASED THE MAN VERY VERY AND IT BE[LONGED] TO <THE> HIM SHEEP MANY AND FEMALE SERVANTS AND [MALE] SERVANTS AND CAMELS AND DONKEYS 43Thus Jacob became exceedingly prosperous. He owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.
1AND HE HEARD <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF [THE] SONS OF LABAN <TO> SAYING HE HAS TAKEN JACOB <OBJ.> ALL THAT [BELONGED] TO FATHER OUR AND FROM [THAT] WHICH [BELONGED] TO FATHER OUR HE HAS ACQUIRED <OBJ.> ALL THE ABUNDANCE <THE> THIS Jacob Flees from Laban 1Now Jacob heard that Laban’s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken away all that belonged to our father and built all this wealth at our father’s expense.”
2AND HE SAW JACOB <OBJ.> [THE] FACE OF LABAN AND THERE! NOT [WAS] HE WITH HIM AS YESTERDAY THREE DAYS AGO 2And Jacob saw from the countenance of Laban that his attitude toward him had changed.
3AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO JACOB RETURN TO [THE] LAND OF FATHERS YOUR AND TO KINDRED YOUR SO I MAY BE WITH YOU 3Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”
4AND HE SENT JACOB AND HE SUMMONED <TO> RACHEL AND <TO> LEAH THE FIELD TO FLOCK HIS 4So Jacob sent word and called Rachel and Leah to the field where his flocks were,
5AND HE SAID TO <THE> THEM [AM] SEEING I <OBJ.> [THE] FACE OF FATHER YOUR THAT NOT [IS] HE TO ME AS YESTERDAY THREE DAYS AGO AND [THE] GOD OF FATHER MY HE HAS BEEN WITH ME 5and he told them, “I can see from your father’s countenance that his attitude toward me has changed; but the God of my father has been with me.
6AND YOU YOU KNOW THAT WITH ALL STRENGTH MY I HAVE SERVED <OBJ.> FATHER YOUR 6You know that I have served your father with all my strength.
7AND FATHER YOUR HE HAS DECEIVED <IN> <THE> ME AND HE HAS CHANGED <OBJ.> WAGE[S] MY TEN TIMES AND NOT HE HAS PERMITTED HIM GOD TO DO HARM WITH ME 7And although he has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, God has not allowed him to harm me.
8IF THUS HE SAID SPECKLED [ONES] IT WILL BE WAGE[S] YOUR AND THEY BORE ALL THE FLOCK SPECKLED [ONES] AND IF THUS HE SAID STRIPED [ONES] IT WILL BE WAGE[S] YOUR AND THEY BORE ALL THE FLOCK STRIPED [ONES] 8If he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore speckled offspring. If he said, ‘The streaked will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore streaked offspring.
9AND HE HAS TAKEN AWAY GOD <OBJ.> [THE] LIVESTOCK OF FATHER YOUR AND HE HAS GIVEN [IT] TO <THE> ME 9Thus God has taken away your father’s livestock and given them to me.
10AND IT WAS AT [THE] TIME MATED THE FLOCK AND I LIFTED UP EYES MY AND I SAW IN A DREAM AND THERE! THE MALE GOATS WHICH WERE GOING UP ON THE FLOCK [WERE] STRIPED SPECKLED AND MOTTLED 10When the flocks were breeding, I saw in a dream that the streaked, spotted, and speckled males were mating with the females.
11AND HE SAID TO ME [THE] ANGEL OF <THE> GOD IN A DREAM O JACOB AND I SAID HERE [AM] I 11In that dream the angel*NoteCloseOr Angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ And I replied, ‘Here I am.’
12AND HE SAID LIFT UP PLEASE EYES YOUR AND SEE ALL THE MALE GOATS WHICH ARE GOING UP ON THE FLOCK [ARE] STRIPED SPECKLED AND MOTTLED FOR I HAVE SEEN <OBJ.> ALL THAT LABAN [IS] DOING TO <THE> YOU 12‘Look up he said, ‘and see that all the males that are mating with the flock are streaked, spotted, or speckled; for I have seen all that Laban has done to you.
13I [AM] THE GOD OF BETH- -EL WHERE YOU ANOINTED THERE A PILLAR WHERE YOU VOWED TO <THE> ME THERE A VOW NOW ARISE GO OUT FROM THE LAND <THE> THIS AND RETURN TO [THE] LAND OF KINDRED YOUR 13I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and made a solemn vow to Me. Now get up, leave this land at once, and return to your native land.’”
14AND SHE ANSWERED RACHEL AND LEAH AND THEY SAID TO <THE> HIM ¿ STILL [BELONG] TO <THE> US [DOES] A SHARE AND AN INHERITANCE IN [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER OUR 14And Rachel and Leah replied “Do we have any portion or inheritance left in our father’s house?
15¿ NOT FOREIGNERS ARE WE ACCOUNTED BY <THE> HIM FOR HE HAS SOLD US AND HE HAS CONSUMED ALSO CONTINUOUSLY <TO CONSUME> <OBJ.> MONEY OUR 15Are we not regarded by him as outsiders? Not only has he sold us, but he has certainly squandered what was paid for us.
16FOR ALL THE WEALTH WHICH HE HAS TAKEN AWAY GOD FROM FATHER OUR [BELONGS] TO <THE> US IT AND TO CHILDREN OUR AND THEREFORE ALL THAT HE HAS SAID GOD TO YOU DO 16Surely all the wealth that God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children. So do whatever God has told you.”
17AND HE AROSE JACOB AND HE LIFTED UP <OBJ.> CHILDREN HIS AND <OBJ.> WIVES HIS ON <THE> CAMELS 17Then Jacob got up and put his children and his wives on camels,
18AND HE DROVE <OBJ.> ALL LIVESTOCK HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL POSSESSION[S] HIS WHICH HE HAD ACCUMULATED [THE] LIVESTOCK OF ACQUISITION HIS WHICH HE HAD ACCUMULATED IN PADDAN ARAM TO GO TO ISAAC FATHER HIS [THE] LAND OF TOWARDS CANAAN 18and he drove all his livestock before him,. along with all the possessions he had acquired in Paddan-aram,*NoteCloseThat is, northwest Mesopotamia to go to his father Isaac in the land in Canaan.
19AND LABAN HE HAD GONE TO SHEAR <OBJ.> SHEEP HIS AND SHE STOLE RACHEL <OBJ.> THE TERAPHIM WHICH [BELONGED] TO FATHER HER 19Now while Laban was out shearing his sheep, Rachel stole her father’s household idols.
20AND HE STOLE JACOB <OBJ.> [THE] HEART OF LABAN THE ARAMEAN ON NOT HE TOLD TO <THE> HIM THAT [WAS] FLEEING HE 20Moreover, Jacob deceived*NoteCloseOr stole the heart of; also in verses 26 and 27 Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was running away.
21AND HE FLED HE AND ALL THAT [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM AND HE AROSE AND HE PASSED OVER <OBJ.> THE RIVER AND HE SET <OBJ.> FACE HIS [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF <THE> GILEAD 21So he fled with all his possessions crossed the Euphrates,*NoteCloseHebrew the River and headed for the hill country of Gilead.
22AND IT WAS TOLD TO LABAN ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD THAT HE HAD FLED JACOB Laban Pursues Jacob 22On the third day Laban was informed that Jacob had fled.
23AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> RELATIVES HIS WITH HIM AND HE PURSUED AFTER HIM A JOURNEY OF SEVEN DAYS AND HE OVERTOOK <OBJ.> HIM IN [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF <THE> GILEAD 23So he took his relatives with him, pursued Jacob for seven days, and overtook him in the hill country of Gilead.
24AND HE CAME GOD TO LABAN THE ARAMEAN IN [THE] DREAM OF THE NIGHT AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM TAKE HEED TO <THE> YOURSELF LEST YOU SHOULD SPEAK WITH JACOB FROM GOOD UNTO BAD 24But that night God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream and warned him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”
25AND HE OVERTOOK LABAN <OBJ.> JACOB AND JACOB HE HAD PITCHED <OBJ.> TENT HIS IN THE HILL COUNTRY AND LABAN HE PITCHED TENT WITH RELATIVES HIS IN [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF <THE> GILEAD 25Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there as well.
26AND HE SAID LABAN TO JACOB WHAT? HAVE YOU DONE AND YOU HAVE STOLEN <OBJ.> HEART MY AND YOU HAVE LED AWAY <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS MY LIKE CAPTIVES OF [THE] SWORD 26Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You have deceived me and carried off my daughters like captives of war!
27<TO> WHY? DID YOU HIDE YOURSELF TO FLEE AND DID YOU STEAL? <OBJ.> ME AND NOT DID YOU TELL? TO <THE> ME AND I SENT AWAY YOU WITH GLADNESS AND WITH SONGS WITH TAMBOURINE AND WITH HARP 27Why did you run away secretly and deceive me, without even telling me? I would have sent you away with joy and singing, with tambourines and harps.
28AND NOT DID YOU ALLOW? ME TO KISS <TO> SONS MY AND <TO> DAUGHTERS MY NOW YOU HAVE BEHAVED FOOLISHLY TO DO 28But you did not even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. Now you have done a foolish thing.
29THERE [IS] TO [THE] POWER OF HAND MY TO DO WITH YOU HARM AND [THE] GOD OF FATHER YOUR LAST NIGHT HE SAID TO ME <TO> SAYING TAKE HEED TO <THE> YOURSELF FROM SPEAKING WITH JACOB FROM GOOD UNTO BAD 29I have power to do you great harm, but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’
30AND NOW CERTAINLY <TO GO> YOU HAVE GONE FOR CERTAINLY <TO LONG FOR> YOU LONGED FOR [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER YOUR <TO> WHY? DID YOU STEAL <OBJ.> GODS MY 30Now you have gone off because you long for your father’s house. But why have you stolen my gods?”
31AND HE ANSWERED JACOB AND HE SAID TO LABAN THAT I WAS AFRAID FOR I SAID LEST YOU SHOULD TEAR AWAY <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS YOUR FROM WITH <THE> ME 31I was afraid,” Jacob answered, “for I thought you would take your daughters from me by force.
32WITH [ANYONE] WHOM YOU WILL FIND <OBJ.> GODS YOUR NOT HE WILL LIVE BEFORE RELATIVES OUR INVESTIGATE FOR <THE> YOURSELF WHAT? [IS] WITH ME AND TAKE [IT] FOR <THE> YOURSELF AND NOT HE KNEW JACOB THAT RACHEL SHE HAD STOLEN THEM 32If you find your gods with anyone here, he shall not live! In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself if anything is yours, and take it back.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the idols.
33AND HE WENT LABAN IN [THE] TENT OF JACOB AND IN [THE] TENT OF LEAH AND IN [THE] TENT OF [THE] TWO THE MAIDSERVANTS AND NOT HE FOUND [THEM] AND HE CAME OUT FROM [THE] TENT OF LEAH AND HE WENT IN [THE] TENT OF RACHEL 33So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, then Leah’s tent, and then the tents of the two maidservants, but he found nothing. Then he left Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent.
34AND RACHEL SHE HAD TAKEN <OBJ.> THE TERAPHIM AND SHE HAD PUT THEM IN [THE] SADDLEBAG OF THE CAMEL AND SHE SAT ON THEM AND HE SEARCHED LABAN <OBJ.> ALL THE TENT AND NOT HE FOUND [THEM] 34Now Rachel had taken Laban’s household idols, put them in the saddlebag of her camel, and was sitting on them. And Laban searched everything in the tent but found nothing.
35AND SHE SAID TO FATHER HER MAY NOT IT BURN IN [THE] EYES OF LORD MY THAT NOT I AM ABLE TO RISE FROM BEFORE YOU FOR [THE] WAY OF WOMEN [BELONGS] TO <THE> ME AND HE SEARCHED AND NOT HE FOUND <OBJ.> THE TERAPHIM 35Rachel said to her father, “Sir, do not be angry that I cannot stand up before you; for I am having my period So Laban searched but could not find the household idols.
36AND IT BURNED TO JACOB AND HE QUARRELED WITH LABAN AND HE ANSWERED JACOB AND HE SAID TO LABAN WHAT? [IS] TRANSGRESSION MY WHAT? [IS] SIN MY THAT YOU HAVE HOTLY PURSUED AFTER ME 36Then Jacob became incensed and challenged Laban. “What is my crime?” he said. “For what sin of mine have you so hotly pursued me?
37THAT YOU HAVE SEARCHED <OBJ.> ALL THINGS MY WHAT? DID YOU FIND OF ALL [THE] THINGS OF HOUSEHOLD YOUR PUT [IT] THUS BEFORE RELATIVES MY AND RELATIVES YOUR SO THEY MAY DECIDE BETWEEN [THE] TWO OF US 37You have searched all my goods! Have you found anything that belongs to you? Put it here before my brothers and yours, that they may judge between the two of us.
38THIS TWENTY YEAR[S] I [HAVE BEEN] WITH YOU EWES YOUR AND FEMALE GOATS YOUR NOT THEY HAVE MISCARRIED AND [THE] RAMS OF FLOCK YOUR NOT I HAVE EATEN 38I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flock.
39A TORN ANIMAL NOT I BROUGHT TO YOU I I BORE [THE] LOSS OF IT FROM HAND MY YOU SOUGHT IT [ONE] STOLEN OF DAY AND [ONE] STOLEN OF NIGHT 39I did not bring you anything torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for what was stolen by day or night.
40I WAS IN THE DAY IT CONSUMED ME HEAT AND FROST IN THE NIGHT AND IT FLED SLEEP MY FROM EYES MY 40As it was, the heat consumed me by day and the frost by night, and sleep fled from my eyes.
41THIS [BELONGED] TO <THE> ME TWENTY YEAR[S] IN HOUSEHOLD YOUR I SERVED YOU FOUR- TEEN YEAR[S] FOR [THE] TWO DAUGHTERS YOUR AND SIX YEARS FOR FLOCK[S] YOUR AND YOU CHANGED <OBJ.> WAGE[S] MY TEN TIMES 41Thus for twenty years I have served in your household— fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks— and you have changed my wages ten times!
42IF NOT [THE] GOD OF FATHER MY [THE] GOD OF ABRAHAM AND [THE] FEAR OF ISAAC HE HAD BEEN TO <THE> ME FOR NOW EMPTY YOU SENT AWAY ME <OBJ.> AFFLICTION MY AND <OBJ.> [THE] TOIL OF HANDS MY HE HAS SEEN GOD AND HE DECIDED LAST NIGHT 42If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, surely by now you would have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my affliction and the toil of my hands, and last night He rendered judgment.”
43AND HE ANSWERED LABAN AND HE SAID TO JACOB THE DAUGHTERS [ARE] DAUGHTERS MY AND THE CHILDREN [ARE] CHILDREN MY AND THE FLOCK [IS] FLOCK MY AND ALL THAT YOU [ARE] SEEING [BELONGS] TO <THE> ME IT AND FOR DAUGHTERS MY WHAT? WILL I DO FOR THESE THIS DAY OR FOR CHILDREN THEIR WHOM THEY HAVE BORNE Jacob’s Covenant with Laban 43But Laban answered Jacob, “These daughters are my daughters, these sons are my sons, and these flocks are my flocks! Everything you see is mine! Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine or the children they have borne?
44AND THEREFORE COME! LET US MAKE A COVENANT I AND YOU AND IT WILL BECOME <INTO> A WITNESS BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU 44Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between you and me
45AND HE TOOK JACOB A STONE AND HE RAISED UP IT A PILLAR 45So Jacob picked out a stone and set it up as a pillar,
46AND HE SAID JACOB TO RELATIVES HIS GATHER STONES AND THEY TOOK STONES AND THEY MADE A HEAP AND THEY ATE THERE AT THE HEAP 46and he said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and made a mound, and there by the mound they ate.
47AND HE CALLED <TO> <THE> IT LABAN JEGAR SAHADUTHA AND JACOB HE CALLED <TO> <THE> IT GALEED 47Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.*NoteCloseThe Aramaic Jegar-sahadutha and the Hebrew Galeed both mean heap of witnesses.
48AND HE SAID LABAN THE HEAP <THE> THIS [IS] A WITNESS BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU THIS DAY THERE- -FORE HE CALLED NAME ITS GALEED 48Then Laban declared, “This mound is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore the place was called Galeed.
49AND <THE> MIZPAH THAT HE SAID MAY HE KEEP WATCH YAHWEH BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU FOR WE WILL BE HIDDEN EACH FROM NEIGHBOR HIS 49It was also called Mizpah,*NoteCloseMizpah means watchtower. because Laban said, “May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are absent from each other.
50IF YOU WILL MISTREAT <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS MY AND IF YOU WILL TAKE WIVES TO DAUGHTERS MY THERE NOT [IS] ANYONE WITH US SEE GOD [IS] A WITNESS BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU 50If you mistreat my daughters or take other wives, although no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me
51AND HE SAID LABAN TO JACOB HERE! THE HEAP <THE> THIS AND HERE! THE PILLAR WHICH I HAVE SET UP BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU 51Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is the mound, and here is the pillar I have set up between you and me.
52[IS] A WITNESS THE HEAP <THE> THIS AND [IS] A WITNESS THE PILLAR IF I NOT I WILL PASS BEYOND TO YOU <OBJ.> THE HEAP <THE> THIS AND IF YOU NOT YOU WILL PASS BEYOND TO ME <OBJ.> THE HEAP <THE> THIS AND <OBJ.> THE PILLAR <THE> THIS FOR HARM 52This mound is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this mound to harm you, and you will not go past this mound and pillar to harm me.
53[THE] GOD OF ABRAHAM AND [THE] GOD OF NAHOR MAY THEY JUDGE BETWEEN US [THE] GOD OF FATHER THEIR AND HE SWORE JACOB BY [THE] FEAR OF FATHER HIS ISAAC 53May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” So Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.
54AND HE SACRIFICED JACOB A SACRIFICE IN THE HILL COUNTRY AND HE INVITED <TO> RELATIVES HIS TO EAT FOOD AND THEY ATE FOOD AND THEY STAYED [THE] NIGHT IN THE HILL COUNTRY 54Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his relatives to eat a meal. And after they had eaten, they spent the night on the mountain.
55AND HE ROSE EARLY LABAN IN THE MORNING AND HE KISSED <TO> SONS HIS AND <TO> DAUGHTERS HIS AND HE BLESSED <OBJ.> THEM AND HE WENT AND HE RETURNED LABAN TO OWN PLACE HIS 55Early the next morning, Laban got up and kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then he left to return home.
