55AND HE ROSE EARLY LABAN IN THE MORNING AND HE KISSED <TO> SONS HIS AND <TO> DAUGHTERS HIS AND HE BLESSED <OBJ.> THEM AND HE WENT AND HE RETURNED LABAN TO OWN PLACE HIS 55Early the next morning, Laban got up and kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then he left to return home.
1AND JACOB HE WENT TO WAY HIS AND THEY MET <IN> <THE> HIM [THE] ANGELS OF GOD Jacob Prepares to Meet Esau 1Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2AND HE SAID JACOB JUST WHEN HE SAW THEM [IS] [THE] CAMP OF GOD THIS AND HE CALLED [THE] NAME OF THE PLACE <THE> THAT MAHANAIM 2When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God.” So he named that place Mahanaim.*NoteCloseMahanaim means two camps.
3AND HE SENT JACOB MESSENGERS <TO> BEFORE HIM TO ESAU BROTHER HIS [THE] LAND OF TOWARDS SEIR [THE] REGION OF EDOM 3Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
4AND HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> THEM <TO> SAYING THUS YOU WILL SAY! TO LORD MY TO ESAU THUS HE SAYS SERVANT YOUR JACOB WITH LABAN I HAVE SOJOURNED AND I HAVE DELAYED UNTIL NOW 4He instructed them, “You are to say to my master Esau, ‘Your servant Jacob says: I have been staying with Laban and have remained there until now.
5AND IT BE[LONGS] TO <THE> ME OX[EN] AND DONKEY[S] FLOCK[S] AND [MALE] SERVANT[S] AND FEMALE SERVANT[S] AND I HAVE SENT! TO TELL TO LORD MY TO FIND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR 5I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, menservants, and maidservants. I have sent this message to inform my master, so that I may find favor in your sight.’”
6AND THEY RETURNED THE MESSENGERS TO JACOB <TO> SAYING WE WENT TO BROTHER YOUR TO ESAU AND ALSO [HE IS] COMING TO MEET YOU AND FOUR HUNDRED<S> MAN [ARE] WITH HIM 6When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you— he and four hundred men with him.”
7AND HE WAS AFRAID JACOB EXCEEDINGLY AND IT WAS DISTRESS TO <THE> HIM AND HE DIVIDED <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE WHICH [WAS] WITH HIM AND <OBJ.> THE FLOCK AND <OBJ.> THE HERD AND THE CAMELS INTO TWO CAMPS 7In great fear and distress, Jacob divided his people into two camps, as well as the flocks and herds and camels.
8AND HE SAID IF HE WILL COME ESAU TO THE CAMP <THE> ONE AND HE WILL ATTACK IT AND IT WILL BECOME THE CAMP WHICH REMAINS <INTO> AN ESCAPED REMNANT 8He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one camp, then the other camp can escape.”
9AND HE SAID JACOB O GOD OF FATHER MY ABRAHAM AND [THE] GOD OF FATHER MY ISAAC O YAHWEH WHO SAID TO ME RETURN TO LAND YOUR AND TO KINDRED YOUR SO LET ME DO GOOD WITH YOU 9Then Jacob declared, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, the LORD who told me, ‘Go back to your country and to your kindred, and I will make you prosper,’
10I AM [TOO] INSIGNIFICANT FOR ALL THE COVENANT LOYALTI<ES> AND FOR ALL THE FAITHFULNESS WHICH YOU HAVE DONE WITH SERVANT YOUR FOR WITH STAFF MY I PASSED OVER <OBJ.> THE JORDAN <THE> THIS AND NOW I HAVE BECOME <INTO> TWO CAMPS 10I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, with only my staff I came across the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.
11DELIVER ME PLEASE FROM [THE] HAND OF BROTHER MY FROM [THE] HAND OF ESAU FOR [AM] FEARING I <OBJ.> HIM LEST HE SHOULD COME AND HE WILL ATTACK ME MOTHER WITH CHILDREN 11Please deliver me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid that he may come and attack me and the mothers and children with me.
12AND YOU YOU HAVE SAID CERTAINLY <TO DO GOOD> I WILL DO GOOD WITH YOU AND I WILL MAKE <OBJ.> OFFSPRING YOUR LIKE [THE] SAND OF THE SEA WHICH NOT IT WILL BE COUNTED FROM MULTITUDE 12But You have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, too numerous to count.’”
13AND HE STAYED [THE] NIGHT THERE IN THE NIGHT <THE> THAT AND HE TOOK SOME OF WHICH CAME IN HAND HIS A GIFT FOR ESAU BROTHER HIS 13Jacob spent the night there, and from what he had brought with him, he selected a gift for his brother Esau:
14FEMALE GOATS TWO HUNDRED AND MALE GOATS TWENTY EWES TWO HUNDRED AND RAMS TWENTY 14200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,
15CAMELS SUCKLING AND YOUNG THEIR THIRTY COWS FORTY AND BULLS TEN FEMALE DONKEYS TWENTY AND MALE DONKEYS TEN 1530 milk camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys.
16AND HE GAVE [THEM] IN [THE] HAND OF SERVANTS HIS HERD HERD TO ONLY IT AND HE SAID TO SERVANTS HIS PASS OVER <TO> BEFORE ME AND A SPACE YOU WILL PUT BETWEEN A HERD AND BETWEEN A HERD 16He entrusted them to his servants in separate herds and told them, “Go on ahead of me, and keep some distance between the herds
17AND HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> THE FIRST <TO> SAYING THAT HE WILL MEET YOU ESAU BROTHER MY AND HE WILL ASK YOU <TO> SAYING [BELONG] TO WHOM? YOU AND WHERE? ARE YOU GOING AND [BELONG] TO WHOM? THESE [ANIMALS] <TO> BEFORE YOU 17He instructed the one in the lead, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘To whom do you belong, where are you going, and whose animals are these before you?’
18AND YOU WILL SAY TO SERVANT YOUR TO JACOB [IS] A GIFT IT [WHICH HAS] BEEN SENT TO LORD MY TO ESAU AND THERE! ALSO HE [IS] BEHIND US 18then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift, sent to my lord Esau. And behold, Jacob is behind us.’”
19AND HE COMMANDED BOTH <OBJ.> THE SECOND AS WELL AS <OBJ.> THE THIRD AS WELL AS <OBJ.> ALL WHO WERE GOING BEHIND THE HERDS <TO> SAYING ACCORDING TO THE MANNER <THE> THIS YOU WILL SPEAK! TO ESAU WHEN FIND YOU <OBJ.> HIM 19He also instructed the second, the third, and all those following behind the herds: “When you meet Esau, you are to say the same thing to him.
20AND YOU WILL SAY ALSO THERE! SERVANT YOUR JACOB [IS] BEHIND US FOR HE SAID I WILL COVER FACE HIS BY THE GIFT THAT IS GOING <TO> BEFORE ME AND AFTER THUS I WILL SEE FACE HIS PERHAPS HE WILL LIFT UP FACE MY 20You are also to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” For he thought, “I will appease Esau*NoteCloseOr I will appease his face with the gift that is going before me. After that I can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.*NoteCloseLiterally perhaps he will lift up my face ”
21AND IT PASSED ON THE GIFT ON FACE HIS AND HE [WAS] STAYING [THE] NIGHT IN THE NIGHT <THE> THAT IN THE CAMP 21So Jacob’s gifts went on before him, while he spent the night in the camp.
22AND HE ROSE IN THE NIGHT THAT AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> [THE] TWO WIVES HIS AND <OBJ.> [THE] TWO MAIDSERVANTS HIS AND <OBJ.> ONE [PLUS] TEN SONS HIS AND HE PASSED OVER <OBJ.> [THE] FORD OF JABBOK Jacob Wrestles with God 22During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
23AND HE TOOK THEM AND HE SENT OVER THEM <OBJ.> THE WADI AND HE SENT OVER <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM 23He took them and sent them across the stream, along with all his possessions
24AND HE REMAINED JACOB TO ONLY HIM AND HE WRESTLED A MAN WITH HIM UNTIL CAME UP THE DAWN 24So Jacob was left all alone, and there a man*NoteCloseOr Man; here and in verses 25–28; corresponding pronouns may also be capitalized wrestled with him until daybreak.
25AND HE SAW THAT NOT HE PREVAILED TO <THE> HIM AND HE TOUCHED <IN> [THE] SOCKET OF THIGH HIS AND IT WAS DISLOCATED [THE] SOCKET OF [THE] THIGH OF JACOB WHEN WRESTLED HE WITH HIM 25When the man saw that he could not overpower Jacob, he struck the socket of Jacob’s hip and dislocated it as they wrestled.
26AND HE SAID LET GO ME FOR IT HAS COME UP THE DAWN AND HE SAID NOT I WILL LET GO YOU THAT EXCEPT YOU HAVE BLESSED ME 26Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
27AND HE SAID TO HIM WHAT? [IS] NAME YOUR AND HE SAID JACOB 27“What is your name?” the man asked. “Jacob,” he replied.
28AND HE SAID NOT JACOB IT WILL BE CALLED AGAIN NAME YOUR THAT EXCEPT ISRAEL FOR YOU HAVE STRUGGLED WITH GOD AND WITH PEOPLE AND YOU HAVE PREVAILED 28Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob,*NoteCloseJacob means he grasps the heel or he deceives. but Israel,*NoteCloseIsrael means he struggles with God. because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.”
29AND HE ASKED JACOB AND HE SAID TELL! PLEASE NAME YOUR AND HE SAID <TO> WHY? THIS DO YOU ASK TO NAME MY AND HE BLESSED <OBJ.> HIM THERE 29And Jacob requested, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed Jacob there.
30AND HE CALLED JACOB [THE] NAME OF THE PLACE PENIEL FOR I HAVE SEEN GOD FACE TO FACE AND IT HAS BEEN DELIVERED LIFE MY 30So Jacob named the place Peniel,*NoteClosePeniel means the face of God. saying, “Indeed, I have seen God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
31AND IT ROSE TO <THE> HIM THE SUN JUST WHEN HE PASSED OVER <OBJ.> PENUEL AND HE [WAS] LIMPING ON THIGH HIS 31The sun rose above him as he passed by Penuel,*NoteClosePenuel is a variant of Peniel; see verse 30. and he was limping because of his hip.
32THERE- -FORE NOT THEY EAT [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> [THE] SINEW OF THE TENDON WHICH [IS] ON [THE] SOCKET OF THE THIGH UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS FOR HE TOUCHED <IN> [THE] SOCKET OF [THE] THIGH OF JACOB <IN> [THE] SINEW OF THE TENDON 32Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was struck near that tendon.
