32THERE- -FORE NOT THEY EAT [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> [THE] SINEW OF THE TENDON WHICH [IS] ON [THE] SOCKET OF THE THIGH UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS FOR HE TOUCHED <IN> [THE] SOCKET OF [THE] THIGH OF JACOB <IN> [THE] SINEW OF THE TENDON 32Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was struck near that tendon.
1AND HE LIFTED UP JACOB EYES HIS AND HE SAW AND THERE! ESAU [WAS] COMING AND [WERE] WITH HIM FOUR HUNDRED<S> MAN AND HE DIVIDED <OBJ.> THE CHILDREN WITH LEAH AND WITH RACHEL AND WITH [THE] TWO THE MAIDSERVANTS Jacob Meets Esau 1Now Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming toward him with four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants.
2AND HE PUT <OBJ.> THE MAIDSERVANTS AND <OBJ.> CHILDREN THEIR FIRST AND <OBJ.> LEAH AND CHILDREN HER BEHIND AND <OBJ.> RACHEL AND <OBJ.> JOSEPH BEHIND 2He put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear.
3AND HE HE PASSED ON <TO> BEFORE THEM AND HE BOWED DOWN [THE] GROUND TOWARDS SEVEN TIMES UNTIL DREW NEAR HE TO BROTHER HIS 3But Jacob himself went on ahead and bowed to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.
4AND HE RAN ESAU TO MEET HIM AND HE EMBRACED HIM AND HE FELL ON NECK HIS AND HE KISSED HIM AND THEY WEPT 4Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. And they both wept.
5AND HE LIFTED UP <OBJ.> EYES HIS AND HE SAW <OBJ.> THE WOMEN AND <OBJ.> THE CHILDREN AND HE SAID WHO? [ARE] THESE TO <THE> YOU AND HE SAID THE CHILDREN WHOM HE HAS SHOWN FAVOR TO GOD <OBJ.> SERVANT YOUR 5When Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he asked, “Who are these with you?” Jacob answered, “These are the children God has graciously given your servant.”
6AND THEY APPROACHED THE MAIDSERVANTS THEY AND CHILDREN THEIR AND THEY BOWED DOWN 6Then the maidservants and their children approached and bowed down.
7AND SHE APPROACHED ALSO LEAH AND CHILDREN HER AND THEY BOWED DOWN AND AFTER HE APPROACHED JOSEPH AND RACHEL AND THEY BOWED DOWN 7Leah and her children also approached and bowed down, and then Joseph and Rachel approached and bowed down.
8AND HE SAID WHO? TO <THE> YOU [IS] ALL THE CAMP <THE> THIS WHICH I HAVE MET AND HE SAID TO FIND FAVOR IN [THE] EYES OF LORD MY 8“What do you mean by sending this whole company to meet me?” asked Esau. “To find favor in your sight, my lord,” Jacob answered.
9AND HE SAID ESAU THERE [BELONGS] TO <THE> ME MUCH O BROTHER MY LET IT BE[LONG] TO <THE> YOU [THAT] WHICH [BELONGS] TO <THE> YOU 9“I already have plenty, my brother,” Esau replied. “Keep what belongs to you.”
10AND HE SAID JACOB MAY NOT [IT BE] PLEASE IF PLEASE I HAVE FOUND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR AND YOU WILL ACCEPT GIFT MY FROM HAND MY FOR SINCE <THUS> I HAVE SEEN FACE YOUR LIKE SEEING [THE] FACE OF GOD AND YOU HAVE ACCEPTED FAVORABLY ME 10But Jacob insisted, “No, please! If I have found favor in your sight, then receive this gift from my hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me favorably.
11TAKE PLEASE <OBJ.> BLESSING MY WHICH IT WAS BROUGHT TO <THE> YOU FOR HE HAS SHOWN FAVOR TO ME GOD AND THAT THERE [BELONGS] TO <THE> ME EVERYTHING AND HE URGED <IN> <THE> HIM AND HE TOOK [IT] 11Please accept my gift*NoteCloseOr blessing or treaty of peace that was brought to you, because God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” So Jacob pressed him until he accepted.
12AND HE SAID LET US SET OUT AND LET US GO AND I WILL GO TO BEFORE YOU 12Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way, and I will go ahead of you.”
13AND HE SAID TO HIM LORD MY [IS] KNOWING THAT THE CHILDREN [ARE] WEAK AND THE SHEEP AND THE CATTLE [ARE] NURSING WITH ME AND PEOPLE WILL DRIVE HARD THEM A DAY ONE AND THEY WILL DIE ALL THE FLOCK 13But Jacob replied, “My lord knows that the children are frail, and I must care for sheep and cattle that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard for even a day, all the animals will die.
14LET HIM PASS ON PLEASE LORD MY <TO> BEFORE SERVANT HIS AND I I WILL JOURNEY ON TO GENTLENESS MY TO [THE] FOOT OF THE PROPERTY WHICH [IS] <TO> BEFORE ME AND TO [THE] FOOT OF THE CHILDREN UNTIL THAT I WILL COME TO LORD MY SEIR TOWARDS 14Please let my lord go ahead of his servant. I will continue on slowly, at a comfortable pace. for the livestock and children, until I come to my lord at Seir.”
15AND HE SAID ESAU LET ME PLACE PLEASE WITH YOU SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHICH [IS] WITH ME AND HE SAID <TO> WHY? THIS LET ME FIND FAVOR IN [THE] EYES OF LORD MY 15“Let me leave some of my people with you,” Esau said. But Jacob replied, “Why do that? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”
16AND HE RETURNED ON THE DAY <THE> THAT ESAU TO WAY HIS SEIR TOWARDS 16So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir,
17AND JACOB HE SET OUT SUCCOTH TOWARDS AND HE BUILT FOR <THE> HIMSELF A HOUSE AND FOR LIVESTOCK HIS HE MADE SHELTERS THERE- -FORE HE CALLED [THE] NAME OF THE PLACE SUCCOTH 17but Jacob went on to Succoth,*NoteCloseSuccoth means booths or shelters or tabernacles; twice in this verse. where he built a house for himself and shelters for his livestock; that is why the place was called Succoth.
18AND HE CAME JACOB SAFE [THE] CITY OF SHECHEM WHICH [IS] IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN WHEN CAME HE FROM PADDAN ARAM AND HE CAMPED WITH [THE] FACE OF THE CITY Jacob Settles in Shechem 18After Jacob had come from Paddan-aram,*NoteCloseThat is, northwest Mesopotamia he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and he camped just outside the city.
