30AND AFTER HE CAME OUT BROTHER HIS WHOM [WAS] ON HAND HIS THE SCARLET THREAD AND SOMEONE CALLED NAME HIS ZERAH 30Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread around his wrist, and he was named Zerah.*NoteCloseZerah can mean scarlet or brightness.
1AND JOSEPH HE HAD BEEN BROUGHT DOWN EGYPT TOWARDS AND HE BOUGHT HIM POTIPHAR [THE] OFFICIAL OF PHARAOH [THE] COMMANDER OF THE BODYGUARDS A MAN AN EGYPTIAN FROM [THE] HAND OF THE ISHMAELITES WHO THEY HAD BROUGHT DOWN HIM THERE TOWARDS Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife 1Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, where an Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
2AND HE WAS YAHWEH WITH JOSEPH AND HE WAS A MAN SUCCESSFUL AND HE WAS IN [THE] HOUSE OF MASTER<S> HIS THE EGYPTIAN 2And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master.
3AND HE SAW MASTER<S> HIS THAT YAHWEH [WAS] WITH HIM AND ALL THAT HE [WAS] DOING YAHWEH [WAS] MAKING SUCCESSFUL IN HAND HIS 3When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him prosper in all he did,
4AND HE FOUND JOSEPH FAVOR IN VIEW HIS AND HE SERVED <OBJ.> HIM AND HE APPOINTED HIM OVER HOUSEHOLD HIS AND ALL [THAT] THERE [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM HE GAVE IN HAND HIS 4Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned.
5AND IT WAS FROM THEN HE APPOINTED <OBJ.> HIM IN HOUSEHOLD HIS AND OVER ALL THAT THERE [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM AND HE BLESSED YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF THE EGYPTIAN ON ACCOUNT OF JOSEPH AND IT WAS [THE] BLESSING OF YAHWEH ON ALL THAT THERE [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM IN THE HOUSE AND IN THE FIELD 5From the time that he put Joseph in charge of his household and all he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s household on account of him. The LORD’s blessing was on everything he owned, both in his house and in his field.
6AND HE LEFT ALL THAT [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM IN [THE] HAND OF JOSEPH AND NOT HE KNEW WITH HIM ANYTHING THAT EXCEPT THE FOOD WHICH HE [WAS] EATING AND HE WAS JOSEPH HANDSOME OF FORM AND HANDSOME OF APPEARANCE 6So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
7AND IT WAS AFTER THE THINGS <THE> THESE AND SHE LIFTED UP [THE] WIFE OF MASTER<S> HIS <OBJ.> EYES HER TO JOSEPH AND SHE SAID LIE! WITH ME 7and after some time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.”
8AND HE REFUSED AND HE SAID TO [THE] WIFE OF MASTER<S> HIS HERE! LORD MY NOT HE KNOWS WITH ME WHAT? [IS] IN THE HOUSE AND ALL THAT THERE [BELONGS] TO <THE> HIM HE HAS GIVEN IN HAND MY 8But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.
9NOT [IS] HE GREAT IN THE HOUSEHOLD <THE> THIS MORE THAN ME AND NOT HE HAS WITHHELD FROM ME ANYTHING THAT EXCEPT <OBJ.> YOU IN THAT YOU [ARE] WIFE HIS AND HOW? WILL I DO THE EVIL <THE> GREAT <THE> THIS AND I WILL SIN TO GOD 9No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?”
10AND IT WAS WHEN SPOKE SHE TO JOSEPH DAY DAY AND NOT HE LISTENED TO HER TO LIE BESIDE HER TO BE WITH HER 10Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be near her.
11AND IT WAS WHEN THE DAY <THE> THIS AND HE WENT THE HOUSE TOWARDS TO DO WORK HIS AND NOT ANYONE FROM [THE] MEN OF THE HOUSE [WAS] THERE IN THE HOUSE 11One day, however, Joseph went into the house to attend to his work, and not a single household servant was inside.
12AND SHE SEIZED HIM BY CLOTHING HIS <TO> SAYING LIE! WITH ME AND HE LEFT CLOTHING HIS IN HAND HER AND HE FLED AND HE WENT OUT THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS 12She grabbed Joseph by his cloak and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his cloak in her hand, he escaped and ran outside.
13AND IT WAS WHEN SAW SHE THAT HE HAD LEFT CLOTHING HIS IN HAND HER AND HE HAD FLED THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS Joseph Falsely Imprisoned 13When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,
14AND SHE CALLED OUT TO [THE] MEN OF HOUSEHOLD HER AND SHE SAID TO <THE> THEM <TO> SAYING SEE HE HAS BROUGHT TO <THE> US A MAN A HEBREW TO MOCK <IN> <THE> US HE CAME TO ME TO LIE WITH ME AND I CALLED OUT WITH A VOICE GREAT 14she called her household servants. “Look,” she said “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I screamed as loud as I could.
15AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD HE THAT I RAISED VOICE MY AND I CALLED OUT AND HE LEFT CLOTHING HIS BESIDE ME AND HE FLED AND HE WENT OUT THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS 15When he heard me scream for help he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
16AND SHE PLACED CLOTHING HIS BESIDE HER UNTIL CAME MASTER<S> HIS TO HOUSE HIS 16So Potiphar’s wife kept Joseph’s cloak beside her until his master came home.
17AND SHE SPOKE TO HIM ACCORDING TO THE WORDS <THE> THESE <TO> SAYING HE CAME TO ME THE SERVANT THE HEBREW WHOM YOU BROUGHT TO <THE> US TO MOCK <IN> <THE> ME 17Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me,
18AND IT WAS WHEN RAISED I VOICE MY AND I CALLED OUT AND HE LEFT CLOTHING HIS BESIDE ME AND HE FLED THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS 18but when I screamed for help he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
19AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD MASTER<S> HIS <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF WIFE HIS WHICH SHE SPOKE TO HIM <TO> SAYING ACCORDING TO THE THINGS <THE> THESE HE DID TO <THE> ME SERVANT YOUR AND IT BURNED ANGER HIS 19When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” he burned with anger.
20AND HE TOOK [THE] MASTER<S> OF JOSEPH <OBJ.> HIM AND HE PUT HIM INTO [THE] HOUSE OF THE PRISON [THE] PLACE <OF> WHERE [THE] PRISONERS OF THE KING [WERE] IMPRISONED AND HE WAS THERE IN [THE] HOUSE OF THE PRISON 20So Joseph’s master took him and had him thrown into the prison where the king’s prisoners were confined. While Joseph was there in the prison,
21AND HE WAS YAHWEH WITH JOSEPH AND HE EXTENDED TO HIM COVENANT LOYALTY AND HE GAVE FAVOR HIS IN [THE] EYES OF [THE] COMMANDER OF [THE] HOUSE OF THE PRISON 21the LORD was with him and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
22AND HE GAVE [THE] COMMANDER OF [THE] HOUSE OF THE PRISON IN [THE] HAND OF JOSEPH <OBJ.> ALL THE PRISONERS WHO [WERE] IN [THE] HOUSE OF THE PRISON AND <OBJ.> ALL THAT [THEY WERE] DOING THERE HE HE WAS DOING 22And the warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care, so that he was responsible for all that was done in the prison.
23NOT [THE] COMMANDER OF [THE] HOUSE OF THE PRISON [WAS] SEEING <OBJ.> ALL ANYTHING IN HAND HIS IN THAT YAHWEH [WAS] WITH HIM AND [THAT] WHICH HE [WAS] DOING YAHWEH [WAS] MAKING SUCCESSFUL 23The warden did not concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
