23AND NOT HE REMEMBERED [THE] CHIEF OF THE CUP BEARERS <OBJ.> JOSEPH AND HE FORGOT HIM 23The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot all about him.
1AND IT WAS FROM [THE] END OF TWO YEARS DAYS AND PHARAOH [WAS] DREAMING AND THERE! [HE WAS] STANDING AT THE RIVER The Dreams of Pharaoh 1After two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing beside the Nile,
2AND THERE! FROM THE RIVER [WERE] COMING UP SEVEN COWS GOOD LOOKING OF APPEARANCE AND FAT OF FLESH AND THEY GRAZED AMONG THE REED[S] 2when seven cows, sleek and well-fed, came up from the river and began to graze among the reeds.
3AND THERE! SEVEN COWS ANOTHER [WERE] COMING UP AFTER THEM FROM THE RIVER DISPLEASING OF APPEARANCE AND THIN OF FLESH AND THEY STOOD BESIDE THE COWS ON [THE] BANK OF THE RIVER 3After them, seven other cows, sickly and thin, came up from the Nile and stood beside the well-fed cows on the bank of the river.
4AND THEY ATE THE COWS <THE> DISPLEASING OF <THE> APPEARANCE AND [THE] THIN OF <THE> FLESH <OBJ.> SEVEN THE COWS <THE> GOOD LOOKING OF <THE> APPEARANCE AND <THE> FAT AND HE AWOKE PHARAOH 4And the cows that were sickly and thin devoured the seven sleek, well-fed cows. Then Pharaoh woke up,
5AND HE SLEPT AND HE DREAMED A SECOND [TIME] AND THERE! SEVEN EARS OF GRAIN [WERE] COMING UP ON A STALK ONE FAT AND GOOD 5but he fell back asleep and dreamed a second time: Seven heads of grain, plump and ripe, came up on one stalk.
6AND THERE! SEVEN EARS OF GRAIN THIN AND SCORCHED OF AN EAST WIND [WERE] SPRINGING UP AFTER THEM 6After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted, thin and scorched by the east wind.
7AND THEY SWALLOWED THE EARS OF GRAIN <THE> THIN <OBJ.> SEVEN THE EARS OF GRAIN <THE> FAT AND <THE> FULL AND HE AWOKE PHARAOH AND THERE! A DREAM 7And the thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven plump, ripe ones. Then Pharaoh awoke and realized it was a dream.
8AND IT WAS IN THE MORNING AND IT WAS TROUBLED SPIRIT HIS AND HE SENT AND HE SUMMONED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] DIVINER PRIESTS OF EGYPT AND <OBJ.> ALL WISE [MEN] ITS AND HE RECOUNTED PHARAOH TO <THE> THEM <OBJ.> DREAM HIS AND THERE NOT [WAS ONE WHO] INTERPRETED <OBJ.> THEM FOR PHARAOH 8In the morning his spirit was troubled, so he summoned all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.
9AND HE SPOKE [THE] CHIEF OF THE CUP BEARERS WITH PHARAOH <TO> SAYING <OBJ.> SINS MY I [AM] BRINGING TO REMEMBRANCE THIS DAY 9Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, “Today I recall my failures.
10PHARAOH HE WAS ANGRY TOWARDS SERVANTS HIS AND HE PUT <OBJ.> ME IN [THE] CUSTODY OF [THE] HOUSE OF [THE] COMMANDER OF THE BODYGUARDS <OBJ.> ME AND <OBJ.> [THE] CHIEF OF THE BAKERS 10Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he put me and the chief baker in the custody of the captain of the guard.
11AND WE DREAMED! A DREAM IN A NIGHT ONE I AND HE EACH ACCORDING TO [THE] INTERPRETATION OF DREAM HIS WE DREAMED 11One night both the chief baker and I had dreams, and each dream had its own meaning.
12AND [WAS] THERE WITH US A YOUNG MAN A HEBREW A SLAVE OF [THE] COMMANDER OF THE BODYGUARDS AND WE RECOUNTED TO <THE> HIM AND HE INTERPRETED FOR <THE> US <OBJ.> DREAMS OUR EACH ACCORDING TO DREAM HIS HE INTERPRETED 12Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams and he interpreted them for us individually.
13AND IT WAS JUST AS HE INTERPRETED FOR <THE> US SO IT WAS <OBJ.> ME HE RESTORED TO OFFICE MY AND <OBJ.> HIM HE HANGED 13And it happened to us just as he had interpreted: I was restored to my position, and the other man was hanged.”
14AND HE SENT PHARAOH AND HE SUMMONED <OBJ.> JOSEPH AND PEOPLE BROUGHT QUICKLY HIM FROM THE PIT AND HE SHAVED AND HE CHANGED CLOTHES HIS AND HE CAME TO PHARAOH Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams 14So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, who was quickly brought out of the dungeon. After he had shaved and changed his clothes, he went in before Pharaoh.
15AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO JOSEPH A DREAM I HAVE DREAMED AND [IS ONE WHO] INTERPRETS THERE NOT <OBJ.> IT AND I I HAVE HEARD ON YOU <TO> SAYING YOU HEAR A DREAM TO INTERPRET <OBJ.> IT 15Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it
16AND HE ANSWERED JOSEPH <OBJ.> PHARAOH <TO> SAYING APART FROM ME GOD HE WILL ANSWER <OBJ.> [THE] WELFARE OF PHARAOH 16“I myself cannot do it,” Joseph replied, “but God will give Pharaoh a sound answer
17AND HE SPOKE PHARAOH TO JOSEPH IN DREAM MY IF [WAS] I STANDING ON [THE] BANK OF THE RIVER 17Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: “In my dream I was standing on the bank of the Nile,
18AND THERE! FROM THE RIVER [WERE] COMING UP SEVEN COWS FAT OF FLESH AND GOOD LOOKING OF FORM AND THEY GRAZED AMONG THE REED[S] 18when seven cows, well-fed and sleek, came up from the river and began to graze among the reeds.
19AND THERE! SEVEN COWS ANOTHER [WERE] COMING UP AFTER THEM WEAK AND DISPLEASING OF FORM VERY AND THIN OF FLESH NOT I HAVE SEEN LIKE THEM IN ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT TO <THE> BADNESS 19After them, seven other cows— sickly, ugly, and thin came up. I have never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt!
20AND THEY ATE THE COWS <THE> THIN AND <THE> DISPLEASING <OBJ.> SEVEN THE COWS <THE> FORMER <THE> FAT 20Then the thin, ugly cows devoured the seven well-fed cows that were there first.
21AND THEY WENT INTO INWARD PART[S] THEIR AND NOT IT WAS KNOWN THAT THEY HAD GONE INTO INWARD PART[S] THEIR AND APPEARANCE THEIR [WAS] DISPLEASING JUST AS AT THE BEGINNING AND I AWOKE 21When they had devoured them, however, no one could tell that they had done so; their appearance was as ugly as it had been before. Then I awoke.
22AND I SAW IN DREAM MY AND THERE! SEVEN EARS OF GRAIN [WERE] COMING UP ON A STALK ONE FULL AND GOOD 22In my dream I also saw seven heads of grain, plump and ripe, growing on a single stalk.
23AND THERE! SEVEN EARS OF GRAIN WITHERED THIN SCORCHED OF AN EAST WIND [WERE] SPRINGING UP AFTER THEM 23After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted— withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind.
24AND THEY SWALLOWED THE EARS OF GRAIN <THE> THIN <OBJ.> SEVEN THE EARS OF GRAIN <THE> GOOD AND I SAID TO THE DIVINER PRIESTS AND THERE NOT [WAS ONE WHO] TOLD TO <THE> ME 24And the thin heads of grain swallowed the seven plump ones. I told this dream to the magicians, but no one could explain it to me.”
25AND HE SAID JOSEPH TO PHARAOH [THE] DREAM OF PHARAOH [IS] ONE IT <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH <THE> GOD [IS] ABOUT TO DO HE HAS TOLD TO PHARAOH 25At this, Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
26SEVEN COWS <THE> GOOD [ARE] SEVEN YEARS THEY AND SEVEN THE EARS OF GRAIN <THE> GOOD [ARE] SEVEN YEARS THEY [IS] DREAM ONE IT 26The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven ripe heads of grain are seven years. The dreams have the same meaning.
27AND SEVEN THE COWS <THE> THIN AND <THE> DISPLEASING THAT WERE COMING UP AFTER THEM [ARE] SEVEN YEARS THEY AND SEVEN THE EARS OF GRAIN <THE> EMPTY <THE> SCORCHED OF THE EAST WIND THEY WILL BE SEVEN YEARS OF FAMINE 27Moreover, the seven thin, ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind— they are seven years of famine.
28THAT [IS] THE WORD WHICH I SPOKE TO PHARAOH [THAT] WHICH <THE> GOD [IS] ABOUT TO DO HE HAS SHOWN <OBJ.> PHARAOH 28It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.
29THERE! SEVEN YEARS [ARE] ABOUT TO COME PLENTY GREAT [WILL BE] IN ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 29Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt,
30AND THEY WILL ARISE SEVEN YEARS OF FAMINE AFTER THEM AND IT WILL BE FORGOTTEN ALL THE PLENTY IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND IT WILL DESTROY THE FAMINE <OBJ.> THE LAND 30but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in the land of Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will devastate the land.
31AND NOT IT WILL BE KNOWN THE PLENTY IN THE LAND <FROM> BECAUSE OF THE FAMINE <THE> THAT AFTER THUS FOR [WILL BE] HEAVY IT VERY 31The abundance in the land will not be remembered, since the famine that follows it will be so severe.
32AND ON [THE] BEING REPEATED OF THE DREAM TO PHARAOH TWO TIMES FOR [IS] CERTAIN THE MATTER FROM WITH <THE> GOD AND [IS] HURRYING <THE> GOD TO DO IT 32Moreover, because the dream was given to Pharaoh in two versions, the matter has been decreed by God, and He will carry it out shortly.
33AND THEREFORE LET HIM SEE PHARAOH A MAN DISCERNING AND WISE AND LET HIM SET HIM OVER [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 33Now, therefore, Pharaoh should look for a discerning and wise man and set him over the land of Egypt.
34LET HIM ACT PHARAOH AND LET HIM APPOINT OVERSEERS OVER THE LAND AND HE WILL TAKE A FIFTH OF <OBJ.> [THE] LAND OF EGYPT IN SEVEN [THE] YEARS OF <THE> PLENTY 34Let Pharaoh take action and appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest*NoteCloseSee LXX; MT a fifth from the land of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.
35AND LET THEM GATHER <OBJ.> ALL [THE] FOOD OF THE YEARS <THE> GOOD THAT ARE COMING <THE> THESE AND LET THEM STORE UP GRAIN UNDER [THE] HAND OF PHARAOH FOOD IN THE CITIES AND THEY WILL KEEP [IT] 35Under the authority of Pharaoh, let them collect all the excess food from these good years, that they may come and lay up the grain to be preserved as food in the cities.
36AND IT WILL BECOME THE FOOD <INTO> A STORE FOR THE LAND FOR SEVEN [THE] YEARS OF <THE> FAMINE WHICH THEY WILL BE IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND NOT IT WILL BE CUT OFF THE LAND BY THE FAMINE 36This food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine to come upon the land of Egypt. Then the country will not perish in the famine.”
37AND IT WAS GOOD THE WORD IN [THE] EYES OF PHARAOH AND IN [THE] EYES OF ALL SERVANTS HIS Joseph Given Charge of Egypt 37This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his officials.
38AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO SERVANTS HIS ¿ HAS HE BEEN FOUND LIKE THIS ONE A MAN WHOM [THE] SPIRIT OF GOD [IS] IN <THE> HIM 38So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, in whom the Spirit of God*NoteCloseOr the spirit of the gods abides?”
39AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO JOSEPH AFTER HAS MADE KNOW GOD <OBJ.> YOU <OBJ.> ALL THIS THERE NOT [IS] A DISCERNING [PERSON] AND A WISE [PERSON] LIKE YOU 39Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one as discerning and wise as you.
40YOU YOU WILL BE OVER HOUSE MY AND ON MOUTH YOUR IT WILL KISS ALL PEOPLE MY ONLY THE THRONE I WILL BE GREAT MORE THAN YOU 40You shall be in charge of my house, and all my people are to obey your commands. Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”
41AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO JOSEPH SEE I SET <OBJ.> YOU OVER ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 41Pharaoh also told Joseph, I hereby place you over all the land of Egypt.”
42AND HE REMOVED PHARAOH <OBJ.> SIGNET-RING HIS FROM ON HAND HIS AND HE SET <OBJ.> IT ON [THE] HAND OF JOSEPH AND HE CLOTHED <OBJ.> HIM CLOTHES OF FINE LINEN AND HE PUT [THE] CHAIN OF <THE> GOLD ON NECK HIS 42Then Pharaoh removed the signet ring from his finger, put it on Joseph’s finger, clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed a gold chain around his neck.
43AND HE MADE RIDE <OBJ.> HIM IN [THE] CHARIOT OF THE SECOND WHICH [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM AND THEY CALLED OUT <TO> BEFORE HIM BEND [THE] KNEE AND HE PUT <OBJ.> HIM OVER ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 43He had Joseph ride in his second chariot, with men calling out before him, “Bow the knee!”*NoteCloseThat is, “Abrek,” probably an Egyptian word that sounds similar to the Hebrew for kneel So he placed him over all the land of Egypt.
44AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO JOSEPH I [AM] PHARAOH AND APART FROM YOU NOT HE WILL LIFT UP ANYONE <OBJ.> HAND HIS AND <OBJ.> FOOT HIS IN ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 44And Pharaoh declared to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your permission, no one in all the land of Egypt shall lift his hand or foot.”
45AND HE CALLED PHARAOH [THE] NAME OF JOSEPH ZAPHENATH- PANEAH AND HE GAVE TO <THE> HIM <OBJ.> ASENATH [THE] DAUGHTER OF POTI- -PHERA [THE] PRIEST OF ON TO A WIFE AND HE WENT OUT JOSEPH OVER [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 45Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah,*NoteCloseZaphenath-paneah probably means Revealer of Mysteries or God speaks and lives. and he gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On,*NoteCloseThat is, Heliopolis, as in LXX; also in verse 50 to be his wife. And Joseph took charge of all the land of Egypt.
46AND JOSEPH [WAS] A SON OF THIRTY YEAR[S] WHEN STOOD HE <TO> BEFORE PHARAOH [THE] KING OF EGYPT AND HE WENT OUT JOSEPH FROM TO BEFORE PHARAOH AND HE PASSED IN ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT The Seven Years of Plenty 46Now Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph left Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout the land of Egypt.
47AND IT PRODUCED THE LAND IN SEVEN [THE] YEARS OF <THE> PLENTY TO HANDFULS 47During the seven years of abundance, the land brought forth bountifully.
48AND HE GATHERED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] FOOD OF SEVEN [THE] YEARS WHICH THEY WERE IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND HE PUT FOOD IN THE CITIES [THE] FOOD OF [THE] FIELD[S] OF THE CITY WHICH [WAS] AROUND IT HE PUT IN [THE] MIDST OF IT 48During those seven years, Joseph collected all the excess food in the land of Egypt and stored it in the cities. In every city he laid up the food from the fields around it
49AND HE STORED UP JOSEPH GRAIN LIKE [THE] SAND OF THE SEA MUCH VERY UNTIL THAT HE CEASED TO MEASURE [IT] FOR THERE NOT [WAS] A MEASURE 49So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance like the sand of the sea, that he stopped keeping track of it; for it was beyond measure.
50AND TO JOSEPH IT WAS BORN TWO SONS <IN> BEFORE IT CAME [THE] YEAR OF <THE> FAMINE WHOM SHE BORE TO <THE> HIM ASENATH [THE] DAUGHTER OF POTI- -PHERA [THE] PRIEST OF ON 50Before the years of famine arrived, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.
51AND HE CALLED JOSEPH <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF THE FIRSTBORN MANASSEH FOR HE HAS MADE FORGET ME GOD <OBJ.> ALL TROUBLE MY AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER MY 51Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh,*NoteCloseManasseh sounds like the Hebrew for making to forget. saying, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s household.”
52AND <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF THE SECOND HE CALLED EPHRAIM FOR HE HAS MADE FRUITFUL ME GOD IN [THE] LAND OF AFFLICTION MY 52And the second son he named Ephraim,*NoteCloseEphraim sounds like the Hebrew for making fruitful or twice fruitful. saying, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
53AND THEY CAME TO AN END SEVEN [THE] YEARS OF <THE> PLENTY WHICH IT WAS IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT The Famine Begins 53When the seven years of abundance in the land of Egypt came to an end,
54AND THEY BEGAN SEVEN [THE] YEARS OF <THE> FAMINE TO COME JUST AS HE HAD SAID JOSEPH AND IT WAS A FAMINE IN ALL THE LANDS AND IN ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT IT WAS FOOD 54the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. And although there was famine in every country, there was food throughout the land of Egypt.
55AND IT WAS HUNGRY ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND IT CRIED OUT THE PEOPLE TO PHARAOH FOR <THE> FOOD AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO ALL EGYPT GO TO JOSEPH [THAT] WHICH HE WILL SAY TO <THE> YOU YOU WILL DO 55When extreme hunger came to all the land of Egypt and the people cried out to Pharaoh for food, he told all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.”
56AND THE FAMINE IT WAS OVER ALL [THE] FACE OF THE LAND AND HE OPENED JOSEPH <OBJ.> ALL THAT [WAS] IN <THE> THEM AND HE BOUGHT GRAIN TO EGYPT AND IT WAS SEVERE THE FAMINE IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 56When the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened up all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
57AND ALL THE EARTH THEY CAME EGYPT TOWARDS TO BUY GRAIN TO JOSEPH FOR IT WAS SEVERE THE FAMINE IN ALL THE EARTH 57And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth.
