57AND ALL THE EARTH THEY CAME EGYPT TOWARDS TO BUY GRAIN TO JOSEPH FOR IT WAS SEVERE THE FAMINE IN ALL THE EARTH 57And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth.
1AND HE SAW JACOB THAT THERE [WAS] GRAIN IN EGYPT AND HE SAID JACOB TO SONS HIS <TO> WHY? ARE YOU LOOKING AT ONE ANOTHER Joseph’s Brothers Sent to Egypt 1When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?”
2AND HE SAID HERE! I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE [IS] GRAIN IN EGYPT GO DOWN THERE TOWARDS AND BUY GRAIN FOR <THE> US FROM THERE SO WE MAY LIVE AND NOT WE WILL DIE 2“Look,” he added, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”
3AND THEY WENT DOWN [THE] BROTHERS OF JOSEPH TEN TO BUY GRAIN GRAIN FROM EGYPT 3So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.
4AND <OBJ.> BENJAMIN [THE] BROTHER OF JOSEPH NOT HE SENT JACOB WITH BROTHERS HIS FOR HE SAID LEST IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO HIM HARM 4But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “I am afraid that harm might befall him.”
5AND THEY CAME [THE] SONS OF ISRAEL TO BUY GRAIN IN AMONG THOSE COMING FOR IT WAS THE FAMINE IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN 5So the sons of Israel were among those who came to buy grain, since the famine had also spread to the land of Canaan.
6AND JOSEPH HE [WAS] THE RULER OVER THE LAND HE [WAS] THE [ONE WHO] SOLD GRAIN TO ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF THE LAND AND THEY CAME [THE] BROTHERS OF JOSEPH AND THEY BOWED DOWN TO <THE> HIM FACE [THE] GROUND TOWARDS 6Now Joseph was the ruler of the land; he was the one who sold grain to all its people. So when his brothers arrived, they bowed down before him with their faces to the ground.
7AND HE SAW JOSEPH <OBJ.> BROTHERS HIS AND HE RECOGNIZED THEM AND HE ACTED AS A STRANGER TO THEM AND HE SPOKE WITH THEM HARSH AND HE SAID TO THEM FROM WHERE? HAVE YOU COME AND THEY SAID FROM [THE] LAND OF CANAAN TO BUY FOOD 7And when Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he treated them as strangers and spoke harshly to them. “Where have you come from?” he asked. “From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We are here to buy food.”
8AND HE RECOGNIZED JOSEPH <OBJ.> BROTHERS HIS AND THEY NOT THEY RECOGNIZED HIM 8Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.
9AND HE REMEMBERED JOSEPH <OBJ.> THE DREAMS WHICH HE HAD DREAMED OF <THE> THEM AND HE SAID TO THEM [ARE] SPIES YOU TO SEE <OBJ.> [THE] NAKEDNESS OF THE LAND YOU HAVE COME 9Joseph remembered his dreams about them and said, “You are spies! You have come to see if our land is vulnerable.”
10AND THEY SAID TO HIM NO O LORD MY AND SERVANTS YOUR THEY HAVE COME TO BUY FOOD 10“Not so, my lord,” they replied. “Your servants have come to buy food.
11ALL OF US [ARE] SONS OF A MAN ONE WE [ARE] HONEST WE NOT THEY ARE SERVANTS YOUR SPIES 11We are all sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies.”
12AND HE SAID TO THEM IN- DEED [THE] NAKEDNESS OF THE LAND YOU HAVE COME TO SEE 12“No,” he told them. “You have come to see if our land is vulnerable.”
13AND THEY SAID [ARE] TWO [PLUS] TEN SERVANTS YOUR BROTHERS WE SONS OF A MAN ONE IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN AND THERE! THE YOUNG [BROTHER] [IS] WITH FATHER OUR THIS DAY AND THE ONE NOT [IS] HE 13But they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”
14AND HE SAID TO THEM JOSEPH IT [IS THAT] WHICH I SAID TO YOU <TO> SAYING [ARE] SPIES YOU 14Then Joseph declared, “Just as I said, you are spies!
15BY THIS YOU WILL BE TESTED [BY] [THE] LIFE OF PHARAOH IF YOU WILL GO OUT FROM HERE THAT EXCEPT WHEN COMES BROTHER YOUR <THE> YOUNG HERE 15And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
16SEND OF <THE> YOURSELVES ONE SO HE MAY FETCH <OBJ.> BROTHER YOUR AND YOU BE IMPRISONED SO THEY MAY BE TESTED WORDS YOUR ¿ [IS] TRUTH WITH YOU AND IF NOT [BY] [THE] LIFE OF PHARAOH FOR [ARE] SPIES YOU 16Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be confined so that the truth of your words may be tested. If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”
18AND HE SAID TO THEM JOSEPH ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD THIS DO AND LIVE <OBJ.> <THE> GOD I [AM] FEARING 18and on the third day he said to them, “I fear God. So do this and you will live:
19IF [ARE] HONEST YOU BROTHER YOUR ONE LET HIM BE IMPRISONED IN [THE] HOUSE OF CUSTODY YOUR AND YOU GO TAKE [THE] GRAIN OF [THE] HUNGER OF HOUSEHOLDS YOUR 19If you are honest, leave one of your brothers in custody while the rest of you go and take back grain to relieve the hunger of your households.
20AND <OBJ.> BROTHER YOUR <THE> YOUNG YOU WILL BRING TO ME SO THEY MAY BE VERIFIED WORDS YOUR AND NOT YOU WILL DIE AND THEY DID SO 20Then bring your youngest brother to me so that your words can be verified, that you may not die.” And to this they consented.
21AND THEY SAID EACH TO BROTHER HIS INDEED [ARE] GUILTY WE ON BROTHER OUR WHO WE SAW [THE] DISTRESS OF SELF HIS WHEN SOUGHT FAVOR HE TO US AND NOT WE LISTENED THERE- -FORE IT HAS COME TO US THE DISTRESS <THE> THIS 21Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw his anguish when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”
22AND HE ANSWERED REUBEN <OBJ.> THEM <TO> SAYING ¿ NOT DID I SAY TO YOU <TO> SAYING MAY NOT YOU SIN AGAINST THE BOY AND NOT YOU LISTENED AND ALSO BLOOD HIS HERE! [IS] BEING REQUIRED 22And Reuben responded, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you would not listen. Now we must account for his blood!”
23AND THEY NOT THEY KNEW THAT [WAS] HEARING JOSEPH FOR THE INTERPRETER [WAS] BETWEEN THEM 23They did not realize that Joseph understood them, since there was an interpreter between them.
24AND HE TURNED AWAY FROM WITH <THE> THEM AND HE WEPT AND HE RETURNED TO THEM AND HE SPOKE TO THEM AND HE TOOK FROM WITH <THE> THEM <OBJ.> SIMEON AND HE BOUND <OBJ.> HIM TO EYES THEIR 24And he turned away from them and wept. When he turned back and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and had him bound before their eyes.
25AND HE COMMANDED JOSEPH AND PEOPLE FILLED <OBJ.> VESSELS THEIR GRAIN AND TO RETURN SILVER<S> THEIR EACH TO SACK HIS AND TO GIVE TO <THE> THEM PROVISION[S] FOR THE JOURNEY AND SOMEONE DID FOR <THE> THEM THUS Joseph’s Brothers Return to Canaan 25Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to return each man’s silver*NoteCloseOr money; here and throughout chapters 42–44 to his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. This order was carried out
26AND THEY LIFTED <OBJ.> GRAIN THEIR ON DONKEYS THEIR AND THEY WENT FROM THERE 26and they loaded the grain on their donkeys and departed.
27AND HE OPENED THE ONE <OBJ.> SACK HIS TO GIVE FODDER TO DONKEY HIS AT THE LODGING PLACE AND HE SAW <OBJ.> SILVER HIS AND THERE! IT [WAS] IN [THE] MOUTH OF SACK HIS 27At the place where they lodged for the night, one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of the sack.
28AND HE SAID TO BROTHERS HIS IT HAS BEEN RETURNED SILVER MY AND ALSO HERE! IN SACK MY AND IT WENT OUT HEART THEIR AND THEY TREMBLED EACH TO BROTHER HIS <TO> SAYING WHAT? THIS HAS HE DONE GOD TO <THE> US 28“My silver has been returned!” he said to his brothers. “It is here in my sack.” Their hearts sank, and trembling, they turned to one another and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”
29AND THEY CAME TO JACOB FATHER THEIR [THE] LAND OF TOWARDS CANAAN AND THEY TOLD TO <THE> HIM <OBJ.> ALL THE [THINGS WHICH] HAD HAPPENED TO <OBJ.> THEM <TO> SAYING 29When they reached their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they described to him all that had happened to them:
30HE SPOKE THE MAN [THE] LORD<S> OF THE LAND WITH US HARSH AND HE MADE <OBJ.> US LIKE [THOSE WHO] SPY OUT <OBJ.> THE LAND 30“The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly to us and accused us of spying on the country.
31AND WE SAID TO HIM [ARE] HONEST WE NOT WE ARE SPIES 31But we told him, ‘We are honest men, not spies.
32[ARE] TWO [PLUS] TEN WE BROTHERS SONS OF FATHER OUR THE ONE NOT [IS] HE AND THE YOUNG [BROTHER] THIS DAY [IS] WITH FATHER OUR IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN 32We are twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of Canaan.’
33AND HE SAID TO US THE MAN [THE] LORD<S> OF THE LAND BY THIS I WILL KNOW THAT [ARE] HONEST YOU BROTHER YOUR <THE> ONE LEAVE WITH ME AND <OBJ.> [THE] HUNGER OF HOUSEHOLDS YOUR TAKE AND GO 33Then the man who is lord of the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest: Leave one brother with me, take food to relieve the hunger of your households, and go.
34AND BRING <OBJ.> BROTHER YOUR <THE> YOUNG TO ME SO LET ME KNOW THAT NOT [ARE] SPIES YOU THAT [ARE] HONEST YOU <OBJ.> BROTHER YOUR I WILL GIVE TO <THE> YOU AND <OBJ.> THE LAND YOU WILL GO ABOUT IN 34But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade in the land.’”
35AND IT WAS THEY [WERE] EMPTYING SACKS THEIR AND THERE! EACH MAN [THE] BAG OF SILVER HIS [WAS] IN SACK HIS AND THEY SAW <OBJ.> [THE] BAGS OF SILVER<S> THEIR THEY AND FATHER THEIR AND THEY WERE AFRAID 35As they began emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his bag of silver! And when they and their father saw the bags of silver, they were dismayed.
36AND HE SAID TO THEM JACOB FATHER THEIR <OBJ.> ME YOU ARE MAKING CHILDLESS JOSEPH NOT [IS] HE AND SIMEON NOT [IS] HE AND <OBJ.> BENJAMIN YOU WILL TAKE ON ME THEY ARE ALL OF THEM 36Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons. Joseph is gone and Simeon is no more. Now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is going against me!”
37AND HE SAID REUBEN TO FATHER HIS <TO> SAYING <OBJ.> TWO OF SONS MY YOU WILL KILL IF NOT I WILL BRING HIM TO YOU PUT! <OBJ.> HIM ON HAND MY AND I I WILL BRING BACK HIM TO YOU 37Then Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him
38AND HE SAID NOT HE WILL GO DOWN SON MY WITH YOU FOR BROTHER HIS HE HAS DIED AND HE TO ONLY HIM [IS] REMAINING AND IT WILL HAPPEN TO HIM HARM ON THE JOURNEY WHICH YOU WILL GO ON <THE> IT AND YOU WILL CAUSE TO GO DOWN <OBJ.> GRAY HAIR MY IN SORROW SHEOL TOWARDS 38But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”
