38AND HE SAID NOT HE WILL GO DOWN SON MY WITH YOU FOR BROTHER HIS HE HAS DIED AND HE TO ONLY HIM [IS] REMAINING AND IT WILL HAPPEN TO HIM HARM ON THE JOURNEY WHICH YOU WILL GO ON <THE> IT AND YOU WILL CAUSE TO GO DOWN <OBJ.> GRAY HAIR MY IN SORROW SHEOL TOWARDS 38But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”
1AND THE FAMINE [WAS] HEAVY IN THE LAND The Return to Egypt with Benjamin 1Now the famine was still severe in the land.
2AND IT WAS JUST WHEN THEY FINISHED TO EAT <OBJ.> THE GRAIN WHICH THEY HAD BROUGHT FROM EGYPT AND HE SAID TO THEM FATHER THEIR GO BACK BUY FOR US A LITTLE OF FOOD 2So when Jacob’s sons had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.”
3AND HE SAID TO HIM JUDAH <TO> SAYING CERTAINLY <TO WARN> HE WARNED <IN> US THE MAN <TO> SAYING NOT YOU WILL SEE FACE MY EXCEPT BROTHER YOUR [IS] WITH YOU 3But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’
4IF THERE YOU [ARE] SENDING <OBJ.> BROTHER OUR WITH US WE WILL GO DOWN AND WE WILL BUY FOR YOU FOOD 4If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you.
5AND IF NOT YOU [ARE] SENDING [HIM] NOT WE WILL GO DOWN FOR THE MAN HE SAID TO US NOT YOU WILL SEE FACE MY EXCEPT BROTHER YOUR [IS] WITH YOU 5But if you will not send him, we will not go; for the man told us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’”
6AND HE SAID ISRAEL <TO> WHY? DID YOU DO HARM TO ME BY TELLING TO THE MAN ¿ STILL [BELONG] TO YOU [DOES] A BROTHER 6“Why did you bring this trouble upon me?” Israel asked. “Why did you tell the man you had another brother?”
7AND THEY SAID CAREFULLY <TO ASK> HE ASKED THE MAN OF US AND OF KINDRED OUR <TO> SAYING ¿ STILL [IS] FATHER YOUR LIVING ¿ [DOES] THERE [BELONG] TO YOU A BROTHER AND WE TOLD TO HIM ON [THE] MOUTH OF THE WORDS <THE> THESE ¿ REALLY <TO KNOW> DID WE KNOW THAT HE WILL SAY BRING DOWN <OBJ.> BROTHER YOUR 7They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?”
8AND HE SAID JUDAH TO ISRAEL FATHER HIS SEND! THE YOUNG MAN WITH ME SO LET US ARISE AND WE WILL GO AND WE MAY LIVE AND NOT WE WILL DIE BOTH WE AS WELL AS YOU AS WELL AS LITTLE ONE[S] OUR 8And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me, and we will go at once, so that we may live and not die— neither we, nor you, nor our children.
9I I WILL STAND SURETY FOR HIM FROM HAND MY YOU WILL REQUIRE HIM IF NOT I HAVE BROUGHT HIM TO YOU AND I WILL SET HIM <TO> BEFORE YOU AND I WILL BE CULPABLE TO YOU ALL THE DAYS 9I will guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life.
10FOR IF NOT WE HAD DELAYED FOR NOW WE HAVE RETURNED THIS TWO TIMES 10If we had not delayed, we could have come and gone twice by now.”
11AND HE SAID TO THEM ISRAEL FATHER THEIR IF SO THEN THIS DO TAKE SOME OF [THE] BEST PRODUCTS OF THE LAND IN VESSELS YOUR AND TAKE DOWN TO THE MAN A GIFT A LITTLE OF BALM AND A LITTLE OF HONEY SPICE AND MYRRH PISTACHIO NUTS AND ALMONDS 11Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your packs and carry them down as a gift for the man— a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachios and almonds.
12AND SILVER DOUBLE TAKE IN HAND YOUR AND <OBJ.> THE SILVER THAT WAS RETURNED IN [THE] MOUTH OF SACKS YOUR YOU WILL TAKE BACK IN HAND YOUR PERHAPS [WAS] A MISTAKE IT 12Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.
13AND <OBJ.> BROTHER YOUR TAKE AND ARISE GO BACK TO THE MAN 13Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.
14AND GOD ALMIGHTY MAY HE GIVE TO YOU COMPASSION<S> <TO> BEFORE THE MAN AND HE WILL LET GO TO YOU <OBJ.> BROTHER YOUR OTHER AND <OBJ.> BENJAMIN AND I JUST WHEN I HAVE BEEN BEREAVED I HAVE BEEN BEREAVED 14May God Almighty*NoteCloseHebrew El-Shaddai grant you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother along with Benjamin. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”
15AND THEY TOOK THE MEN <OBJ.> THE GIFT <THE> THIS AND DOUBLE MONEY THEY TOOK IN HAND THEIR AND <OBJ.> BENJAMIN AND THEY AROSE AND THEY WENT DOWN EGYPT AND THEY STOOD <TO> BEFORE JOSEPH 15So the men took these gifts, along with double the amount of silver, and Benjamin as well. Then they hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
16AND HE SAW JOSEPH WITH THEM <OBJ.> BENJAMIN AND HE SAID TO [THE ONE] WHO [WAS] OVER HOUSEHOLD HIS BRING <OBJ.> THE MEN THE HOUSE TOWARDS AND SLAUGHTER A SLAUGHTER AND PREPARE [IT] FOR WITH ME THEY WILL EAT THE MEN AT <THE> NOON<S> Joseph’s Hospitality to His Brothers 16When Joseph saw Benjamin with his brothers, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for they shall dine with me at noon.”
17AND HE DID THE MAN JUST AS HE SAID JOSEPH AND HE BROUGHT THE MAN <OBJ.> THE MEN [THE] HOUSE OF TOWARDS JOSEPH 17The man did as Joseph had commanded and took the brothers to Joseph’s house.
18AND THEY WERE AFRAID THE MEN THAT THEY WERE BROUGHT [THE] HOUSE OF JOSEPH AND THEY SAID ON [THE] MATTER OF THE SILVER WHICH RETURNED IN SACKS OUR AT THE BEGINNING WE [ARE] BEING BROUGHT TO ROLL HIMSELF ON US AND TO THROW HIMSELF ON US AND TO TAKE <OBJ.> US TO SLAVES AND <OBJ.> DONKEYS OUR 18But the brothers were frightened that they had been taken to Joseph’s house. “We have been brought here because of the silver that was returned in our bags the first time,” they said. “They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our donkeys.”
19AND THEY APPROACHED <TO> THE MAN WHO [WAS] OVER [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF JOSEPH AND THEY SPOKE TO HIM [THE] ENTRANCE OF THE HOUSE 19So they approached Joseph’s steward. and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.
20AND THEY SAID PARDON US O LORD MY CERTAINLY <TO COME DOWN> WE CAME DOWN AT THE BEGINNING TO BUY FOOD 20“Please, sir,” they said, “we really did come down here the first time to buy food.
21AND IT WAS THAT WE CAME TO THE LODGING PLACE AND WE OPENED! <OBJ.> SACKS OUR AND THERE! [THE] SILVER OF EACH MAN [WAS] IN [THE] MOUTH OF SACK HIS SILVER OUR IN WEIGHT ITS AND WE HAVE BROUGHT BACK <OBJ.> IT IN HAND OUR 21But when we came to the place we lodged for the night, we opened our sacks and, behold, each of us found his silver in the mouth of his sack! It was the full amount of our silver, and we have brought it back with us.
22AND SILVER OTHER WE HAVE BROUGHT DOWN IN HAND OUR TO BUY FOOD NOT WE KNOW WHO? DID HE PUT SILVER OUR IN SACKS OUR 22We have brought additional silver with us to buy food. We do not know who put our silver in our sacks.”
23AND HE SAID PEACE [BE] TO YOU MAY NOT YOU FEAR GOD YOUR AND [THE] GOD OF FATHER YOUR HE GAVE TO YOU TREASURE IN SACKS YOUR SILVER YOUR IT CAME TO ME AND HE BROUGHT OUT TO THEM <OBJ.> SIMEON 23“It is fine said the steward. “Do not be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, gave you the treasure that was in your sacks. I received your silver.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.
24AND HE BROUGHT THE MAN <OBJ.> THE MEN [THE] HOUSE OF TOWARDS JOSEPH AND HE GAVE WATER AND THEY WASHED FEET THEIR AND HE GAVE FODDER TO DONKEYS THEIR 24And the steward took the men into Joseph’s house, gave them water to wash their feet, and provided food for their donkeys.
25AND THEY PREPARED <OBJ.> THE GIFT UNTIL CAME JOSEPH AT <THE> NOON<S> FOR THEY HAD HEARD THAT THERE THEY WILL EAT FOOD 25Since the brothers had been told that they were going to eat a meal there, they prepared their gift for Joseph’s arrival at noon.
26AND HE CAME JOSEPH THE HOUSE TOWARDS AND THEY BROUGHT TO HIM <OBJ.> THE GIFT WHICH [WAS] IN HAND THEIR THE HOUSE TOWARDS AND THEY BOWED DOWN TO HIM [THE] GROUND TOWARDS 26When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought, and they bowed to the ground before him.
27AND HE ASKED OF THEM TO WELFARE AND HE SAID ¿ HEALTH [IS] FATHER YOUR <THE> OLD WHOM YOU SPOKE ¿ [IS] STILL HE ALIVE 27He asked if they were well, and then he asked, How is your elderly father you told me about? Is he still alive?”
28AND THEY SAID HEALTH [BELONGS] TO SERVANT YOUR TO FATHER OUR STILL HE [IS] ALIVE AND THEY BOWED LOW AND THEY BOWED DOWN 28“Your servant our father is well,” they answered. “He is still alive.” And they bowed down to honor him.
29AND HE LIFTED UP EYES HIS AND HE SAW <OBJ.> BENJAMIN BROTHER HIS [THE] SON OF MOTHER HIS AND HE SAID ¿ [IS] THIS BROTHER YOUR <THE> YOUNG WHOM YOU SPOKE TO ME AND HE SAID GOD MAY HE SHOW FAVOR TO YOU O SON MY 29When Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” Then he declared, “May God be gracious to you, my son.”
30AND HE HURRIED JOSEPH FOR THEY GREW WARM COMPASSION<S> HIS TO BROTHER HIS AND HE SOUGHT TO WEEP AND HE WENT THE INNER ROOM TOWARDS AND HE WEPT THERE <TOWARDS> 30Joseph hurried out because he was moved to tears for his brother, and he went to a private room to weep.
31AND HE WASHED FACE HIS AND HE CAME OUT AND HE RESTRAINED HIMSELF AND HE SAID SET FOOD 31Then he washed his face and came back out. Regaining his composure, he said, “Serve the meal.”
32AND THEY SET FOR <THE> HIM TO ONLY HIM AND TO <THE> THEM TO ALONE THEM AND FOR THE EGYPTIANS WHO WERE EATING WITH HIM TO ALONE THEM FOR NOT THEY WERE ABLE! THE EGYPTIANS TO EAT WITH THE HEBREWS FOOD FOR [IS] AN ABOMINATION IT TO EGYPT 32They separately served Joseph, his brothers, and the Egyptians. They ate separately because the Egyptians would not eat with the Hebrews, since that was detestable to them.
33AND THEY SAT DOWN <TO> BEFORE HIM THE FIRSTBORN ACCORDING TO BIRTHRIGHT HIS AND THE YOUNG [BROTHER] ACCORDING TO YOUTH HIS AND THEY LOOKED IN ASTONISHMENT THE MEN EACH TO NEIGHBOR HIS 33They were seated before Joseph in order by age, from the firstborn to the youngest, and the men looked at one another in astonishment.
34AND SOMEONE TOOK PORTIONS FROM WITH FACE HIS TO THEM AND IT WAS GREAT [THE] PORTION OF BENJAMIN MORE THAN [THE] PORTIONS OF ALL OF THEM FIVE HANDS AND THEY DRANK AND THEY BECAME DRUNK WITH HIM 34When the portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times larger than any of the others. So they feasted and drank freely with Joseph.
