27RELIGION PURE AND UNDEFILED BEFORE THE GOD AND FATHER THIS IS, TO VISIT ORPHANS AND WIDOWS IN THE TRIBULATION OF THEM, UNSTAINED ONESELF TO KEEP FROM THE WORLD. 27Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
1BROTHERS OF MINE, NOT WITH PARTIALITY DO HOLD THE FAITH OF THE LORD OF US JESUS CHRIST <THE> OF GLORY. A Warning against Favoritism 1My brothers, as you hold out your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, do not show favoritism.
2IF FOR SHALL COME INTO THE ASSEMBLY OF YOU A MAN WITH A GOLD RING IN APPAREL SPLENDID, MAY COME IN THEN ALSO A POOR [MAN] IN SHABBY APPAREL 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting*NoteCloseGreek your synagogue wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in.
3AND YOU MAY LOOK ALSO UPON THE [ONE] WEARING THE APPAREL <THE> SPLENDID AND MAY SAY TO HIM: YOU YOURSELF DO SIT HERE HONORABLY, AND TO THE POOR MAY SAY; YOU YOURSELF DO STAND THERE OR DO SIT HERE UNDER THE FOOTSTOOL OF MINE, 3If you lavish attention on the man in fine clothes and say, Here is a seat of honor, ” but say to the poor man, “You must stand ” or “Sit at my feet, ”
4AND NOT WERE DISCRIMINATED AMONG YOURSELVES AND YOU HAVE BECOME JUDGES WITH THOUGHTS EVIL? 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
5DO LISTEN, BROTHERS OF MINE BELOVED, NOT <THE> GOD HAS CHOSEN THE POOR IN THE WORLD THIS [TO BE] RICH IN FAITH AND HEIRS OF THE KINGDOM THAT HE PROMISED TO THOSE LOVING HIM? 5Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He promised those who love Him?
6YOU YOURSELVES HOWEVER DISHONORED THE POOR. SURELY THE RICH ARE OPPRESSING YOU AND THEY THEMSELVES DRAGGING YOU INTO COURT? 6But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?
7SURELY THEY THEMSELVES ARE DENIGRATING THE GOOD NAME WHICH HAVING BEEN CALLED UPON YOU? 7Are they not the ones who blaspheme the noble name by which you have been called?*NoteCloseOr the noble name invoked upon you or the noble name of Him to whom you belong
8IF INDEED [THE] LAW YOU KEEP ROYAL ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURE; YOU WILL LOVE THE NEIGHBOUR OF YOU AS YOURSELF, WELL YOU ARE DOING; 8If you really fulfill the royal law stated in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”*NoteCloseLeviticus 19:18 you are doing well.
9IF HOWEVER YOU SHOW PARTIALITY, SIN YOU ARE COMMITTING BEING CONVICTED BY THE LAW AS TRANSGRESSORS. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
10WHOEVER FOR ALL THE LAW MAY KEEP, MAY STUMBLE BUT IN ONE [POINT], HE HAS BECOME OF ALL GUILTY. 10Whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
11THE [ONE] FOR HAVING SAID NOT YOU MAY COMMIT ADULTERY, SAID ALSO NOT YOU MAY MURDER. IF HOWEVER NOT YOU DO COMMIT ADULTERY DO COMMIT MURDER HOWEVER, YOU HAVE BECOME A TRANSGRESSOR OF [THE] LAW. 11For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,”*NoteCloseExodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18 also said, Do not murder.”*NoteCloseExodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17 If you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
12THUS DO SPEAK AND SO DO ACT AS THROUGH [THE] LAW OF FREEDOM BEING ABOUT TO BE JUDGED. 12Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom.
13<THE> FOR JUDGMENT WITHOUT MERCY [WILL BE] TO THE [ONE] NOT HAVING SHOWN MERCY; AND IT TRIUMPHS OVER MERCY JUDGMENT. 13For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
14WHAT [IS] THE PROFIT, BROTHERS OF MINE, IF FAITH SHALL SAY ANYONE TO HAVE, WORKS HOWEVER NOT HE MAY HAVE? SURELY NOT IS ABLE THE FAITH TO SAVE HIM? Faith and Works (Galatians 3:1–9) 14What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?
15NOW IF NOW A BROTHER OR A SISTER WITHOUT CLOTHES SHALL BE AND LACKING THEY MAY BE <THE> OF DAILY FOOD, 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
16MAY SAY THEN ANYONE TO THEM OUT FROM YOU; DO GO IN PEACE, DO BE WARMED AND DO BE FILLED, SURELY NOT MAY GIVE HOWEVER TO THEM THE NEEDFUL THINGS FOR THE BODY, WHAT [IS] THE PROFIT? 16If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed, ” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that?
17SO ALSO <THE> FAITH, ONLY UNLESS IT SHALL HAVE WORKS [THEN] DEAD IT IS BY ITSELF. 17So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action,*NoteCloseLiterally if it does not have works is dead.
18BUT WILL SAY SOMEONE; YOU YOURSELF FAITH HAVE, AND I MYSELF WORKS HAVE; DO SHOW ME THE FAITH OF YOU WITHOUT THE WORKS OF YOU AND I MYSELF YOU WILL SHOW BY THE WORKS OF MINE THE FAITH OF MINE. 18But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds. ” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
19YOU YOURSELF BELIEVE THAT ONE IS <THE> GOD; WELL YOU ARE DOING! EVEN THE DEMONS BELIEVE [THAT] AND SHUDDER! 19You believe that God is one.*NoteCloseOr that there is one God Good for you! Even the demons believe that— and shudder.
20DO YOU WANT HOWEVER TO COME TO KNOW, O MAN FOOLISH, THAT <THE> FAITH APART FROM <THE> WORKS WORTHLESS IS? 20O foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is worthless?*NoteCloseBYZ and TR dead
21ABRAHAM THE FATHER OF US NOT BY WORKS WAS JUSTIFIED HAVING OFFERED ISAAC THE SON OF HIM UPON THE ALTAR? 21Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22[DO] YOU SEE THAT <THE> [HIS] FAITH WAS WORKING WITH THE WORKS OF HIM AND BY <THE> [HIS] WORKS <THE> [HIS] FAITH WAS PERFECTED? 22You see that his faith was working with his actions, and his faith was perfected by what he did.
23AND WAS FULFILLED THE SCRIPTURE WHICH IS SAYING; BELIEVED THEN ABRAHAM <THE> IN GOD AND IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS AND A FRIEND OF GOD HE WAS CALLED. 23And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”*NoteCloseGenesis 15:6 and he was called a friend of God.*NoteCloseSee Isaiah 41:8.
24YOU SEE THEREFORE THAT BY WORKS IS JUSTIFIED A MAN AND NOT BY FAITH ALONE. 24As you can see a man is justified by his deeds and not by faith alone.
25LIKEWISE THEN ALSO RAHAB THE PROSTITUTE NOT BY WORKS WAS JUSTIFIED HAVING RECEIVED THE MESSENGERS AND BY ANOTHER WAY HAVING SENT [THEM] FORTH? 25In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute justified by her actions when she welcomed the spies*NoteCloseLiterally messengers and sent them off on another route?
26JUST AS FOR THE BODY APART FROM SPIRIT DEAD IS, SO ALSO <THE> FAITH APART FROM <THE> WORKS DEAD IS. 26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
