40AND I WILL PUT ON YOU A REPROACH OF PERPETUITY AND SHAME OF PERPETUITY WHICH NOT IT WILL BE FORGOTTEN 40And I will bring upon you everlasting shame and perpetual humiliation that will never be forgotten.”
1HE SHOWED ME YAHWEH AND THERE! TWO BASKETS OF FIGS [WERE] SET <TO> BEFORE [THE] TEMPLE OF YAHWEH AFTER TOOK INTO EXILE NEBUCHADNEZZAR [THE] KING OF BABYLON <OBJ.> JECONIAH [THE] SON OF JEHOIAKIM [THE] KING OF JUDAH AND <OBJ.> [THE] OFFICIALS OF JUDAH AND <OBJ.> THE CRAFTSMAN AND <OBJ.> THE SMITH[S] FROM JERUSALEM AND HE BROUGHT THEM BABYLON The Good and Bad Figs 1After Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away Jeconiah*NoteCloseJeconiah is a variant of Jehoiachin; see 2 Kings 24:12. son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, as well as the officials of Judah and the craftsmen and metalsmiths from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon,*NoteCloseOr metalsmiths, and had brought them from Jerusalem to Babylon the LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the LORD.
2THE BASKET ONE [WAS] FIGS GOOD VERY LIKE [THE] FIGS OF THE EARLY FIGS AND THE BASKET ONE [WAS] FIGS BAD VERY WHICH NOT THEY WILL BE EATEN FROM BADNESS 2One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early, but the other basket contained very poor figs, so bad they could not be eaten.
3AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO ME WHAT? [ARE] YOU SEEING O JEREMIAH AND I SAID FIGS THE FIGS <THE> GOOD [ARE] GOOD VERY AND THE BAD [FIGS] [ARE] BAD VERY WHICH NOT THEY WILL BE EATEN FROM BADNESS 3“Jeremiah,” the LORD asked “what do you see?” “Figs!” I replied. “The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.”
5THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL LIKE THE FIGS <THE> GOOD <THE> THESE SO I WILL REGARD <OBJ.> [THE] EXILE[S] OF JUDAH WHOM I HAVE SENT FROM THE PLACE <THE> THIS [THE] LAND OF [THE] CHALDEANS FOR GOOD 5“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, so I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans.*NoteCloseThat is, the Babylonians
6AND I WILL SET EYE MY ON THEM FOR GOOD AND I WILL BRING BACK THEM TO THE LAND <THE> THIS AND I WILL BUILD UP THEM AND NOT I WILL TEAR [THEM] DOWN AND I WILL PLANT THEM AND NOT I WILL PLUCK [THEM] UP 6I will keep My eyes on them for good and will return them to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them.
7AND I WILL GIVE TO <THE> THEM A HEART TO KNOW <OBJ.> ME THAT I [AM] YAHWEH AND THEY WILL BECOME FOR <THE> ME <INTO> A PEOPLE AND I I WILL BECOME FOR <THE> THEM <INTO> GOD FOR THEY WILL RETURN TO ME WITH ALL HEART THEIR 7I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD. They will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with all their heart.
8AND LIKE THE FIGS <THE> BAD WHICH NOT THEY WILL BE EATEN FROM BADNESS FOR THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH SO I WILL MAKE <OBJ.> ZEDEKIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH AND <OBJ.> OFFICIALS HIS AND <OBJ.> [THE] REMNANT OF JERUSALEM THOSE [WHO] REMAIN IN THE LAND <THE> THIS AND THOSE [WHO] DWELL IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 8But like the bad figs, so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the LORD, ‘so will I deal with Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials, and the remnant of Jerusalem— those remaining in this land and those living in the land of Egypt.
9AND I WILL MAKE THEM INTO A TERROR INTO AN EVIL TO ALL [THE] KINGDOMS OF THE EARTH INTO A REPROACH AND INTO A BYWORD INTO A TAUNT AND INTO A CURSE IN ALL THE PLACES WHERE I WILL BANISH THEM THERE 9I will make them a horror and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a disgrace and an object of scorn, ridicule, and cursing wherever I have banished them.
10AND I WILL SEND ON <THE> THEM <OBJ.> THE SWORD <OBJ.> THE FAMINE AND <OBJ.> THE PESTILENCE UNTIL ARE FINISHED THEY FROM ON THE GROUND WHICH I GAVE TO THEM AND TO ANCESTORS THEIR 10And I will send against them sword and famine and plague, until they have perished from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.’”
