10AND I WILL SEND ON <THE> THEM <OBJ.> THE SWORD <OBJ.> THE FAMINE AND <OBJ.> THE PESTILENCE UNTIL ARE FINISHED THEY FROM ON THE GROUND WHICH I GAVE TO THEM AND TO ANCESTORS THEIR 10And I will send against them sword and famine and plague, until they have perished from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.’”
1THE WORD WHICH IT CAME TO JEREMIAH ON ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF JUDAH IN THE YEAR <THE> FOURTH OF JEHOIAKIM [THE] SON OF JOSIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH IT [WAS] THE YEAR <THE> FIRST OF NEBUCHADNEZZAR [THE] KING OF BABYLON Seventy Years of Captivity 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
2WHICH HE SPOKE JEREMIAH THE PROPHET TO ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF JUDAH AND TO ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM <TO> SAYING 2So the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah and all the residents of Jerusalem as follows:
3SINCE THIR- TEEN YEAR OF JOSIAH [THE] SON OF AMON [THE] KING OF JUDAH AND UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS THIS THREE AND TWENTY YEAR[S] IT HAS COME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO ME AND I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU RISING EARLY AND SPEAKING AND NOT YOU HAVE LISTENED 3“From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah until this very day— twenty-three years— the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you again and again,*NoteCloseLiterally I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking, but you have not listened.
4AND HE SENT YAHWEH TO YOU <OBJ.> ALL SERVANTS HIS THE PROPHETS RISING EARLY AND SENDING AND NOT YOU LISTENED AND NOT YOU INCLINED <OBJ.> EAR YOUR TO LISTEN 4And the LORD has sent all His servants the prophets to you again and again,*NoteCloseLiterally to you, rising up early and sending (them), but you have not listened or inclined your ear to hear.
5<TO> SAYING TURN BACK PLEASE EVERYONE FROM WAY HIS <THE> EVIL AND FROM [THE] WICKEDNESS OF DEEDS YOUR AND DWELL ON THE LAND WHICH HE GAVE YAHWEH TO YOU AND TO ANCESTORS YOUR <TO> FROM ANTIQUITY AND UNTIL PERPETUITY 5The prophets told you, ‘Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and deeds, and you can dwell in the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers forever and ever.
6AND MAY NOT YOU WALK AFTER GODS OTHER TO SERVE THEM AND TO BOW DOWN TO <THE> THEM AND NOT YOU MUST PROVOKE TO ANGER <OBJ.> ME BY [THE] WORK OF HANDS YOUR AND NOT I WILL DO HARM TO <THE> YOU 6Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands. Then I will do you no harm
7AND NOT YOU HAVE LISTENED TO ME [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH SO AS TO PROVOKE TO ANGER ME BY [THE] WORK OF HANDS YOUR FOR HARM OF YOU 7‘But to your own harm, you have not listened to Me,’ declares the LORD, ‘so you have provoked Me to anger with the works of your hands
8<TO> THEREFORE THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS BECAUSE THAT NOT YOU HAVE LISTENED TO <OBJ.> WORDS MY 8Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Because you have not obeyed My words,
9HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO SEND AND I WILL FETCH <OBJ.> ALL [THE] CLANS OF [THE] NORTH [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND TO NEBUCHADNEZZAR [THE] KING OF BABYLON SERVANT MY AND I WILL BRING THEM ON THE LAND <THE> THIS AND ON INHABITANTS ITS AND ON ALL THE NATIONS <THE> THESE ROUND ABOUT AND I WILL TOTALLY DESTROY THEM AND I WILL MAKE THEM INTO A WASTE AND INTO A HISSING AND INTO RUINS OF PERPETUITY 9behold, I will summon all the families of the north, declares the LORD, and I will send for My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, whom I will bring against this land, against its residents, and against all the surrounding nations. So I will devote them to destruction*NoteCloseForms of the Hebrew cherem refer to the giving over of things or persons, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering. and make them an object of horror and contempt, an everlasting desolation.
10AND I WILL DESTROY FROM <THE> THEM [THE] SOUND OF JOY AND [THE] SOUND OF GLADNESS [THE] SOUND OF A BRIDEGROOM AND [THE] SOUND OF A BRIDE [THE] SOUND OF A HAND-MILL AND [THE] LIGHT OF A LAMP 10Moreover, I will banish from them the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of the bride and bridegroom, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp.
11AND IT WILL BECOME ALL THE LAND <THE> THIS <INTO> A DESOLATION <INTO> A WASTE AND THEY WILL SERVE THE NATIONS <THE> THESE <OBJ.> [THE] KING OF BABYLON SEVENTY YEAR[S] 11And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for seventy years.
12AND IT WILL BE WHEN ARE COMPLETED SEVENTY YEAR[S] I WILL VISIT [JUDGMENT] ON [THE] KING OF BABYLON AND ON THE NATION <THE> THAT [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH <OBJ.> INIQUITY THEIR AND ON [THE] LAND OF [THE] CHALDEANS AND I WILL MAKE <OBJ.> IT INTO DESOLATIONS OF PERPETUITY 12But when seventy years are complete, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans,*NoteCloseThat is, the Babylonians for their guilt, declares the LORD, and I will make it an everlasting desolation.
13AND I WILL BRING ON THE LAND <THE> THAT <OBJ.> ALL WORDS MY WHICH I SPOKE ON IT <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> [THING] WRITTEN IN THE BOOK <THE> THIS WHICH HE PROPHESIED JEREMIAH ON ALL THE NATIONS 13I will bring upon that land all the words I have pronounced against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.
14FOR THEY WILL WORK BY <THE> THEM ALSO THEY NATIONS MANY AND KINGS GREAT AND I WILL REPAY TO <THE> THEM ACCORDING TO DEED[S] THEIR AND ACCORDING TO [THE] WORK OF HANDS THEIR 14For many nations and great kings will enslave them, and I will repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.’”
15FOR THUS HE SAID YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL TO ME TAKE <OBJ.> [THE] CUP OF <THE> WINE THE RAGE <THE> THIS FROM HAND MY AND YOU WILL MAKE DRINK <OBJ.> IT <OBJ.> ALL THE NATIONS WHICH I [AM] SENDING <OBJ.> YOU TO THEM The Cup of God’s Wrath 15This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from My hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink from it.
16AND THEY WILL DRINK AND THEY WILL STAGGER TO AND FRO AND THEY WILL ACT LIKE MAD PEOPLE <FROM> BECAUSE OF THE SWORD WHICH I [AM] ABOUT TO SEND BETWEEN THEM 16And they will drink and stagger and go out of their minds, because of the sword that I will send among them.”
17AND I TOOK <OBJ.> THE CUP FROM [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH AND I MADE DRINK <OBJ.> ALL THE NATIONS WHICH HE SENT ME YAHWEH TO THEM 17So I took the cup from the LORD’s hand and made all the nations drink from it, each one to whom the LORD had sent me,
18<OBJ.> JERUSALEM AND <OBJ.> [THE] CITIES OF JUDAH AND <OBJ.> KINGS ITS <OBJ.> OFFICIALS ITS TO MAKE <OBJ.> THEM INTO A RUIN INTO A WASTE INTO A HISSING AND INTO A CURSE AS THE DAY <THE> THIS 18to make them a ruin, an object of horror and contempt and cursing, as they are to this day— Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials;
19<OBJ.> PHARAOH [THE] KING OF EGYPT AND <OBJ.> SERVANTS HIS AND <OBJ.> OFFICIALS HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL PEOPLE HIS 19Pharaoh king of Egypt, his officials, his leaders, and all his people;
20AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> FOREIGNER AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF [THE] LAND OF <THE> UZ AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF [THE] LAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES AND <OBJ.> ASHKELON AND <OBJ.> GAZA AND <OBJ.> EKRON AND <OBJ.> [THE] REMNANT OF ASHDOD 20all the mixed tribes; all the kings of Uz; all the kings of the Philistines: Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;
22AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF TYRE AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF SIDON AND <OBJ.> [THE] KINGS OF THE COASTLAND WHICH [IS] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA 22all the kings of Tyre and Sidon; the kings of the coastlands across the sea;
23AND <OBJ.> DEDAN AND <OBJ.> TEMA AND <OBJ.> BUZ AND <OBJ.> ALL [THOSE WHO] ARE CUT OFF OF [THE] CORNER 23Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair;
24AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF ARABIA AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF THE ARAB[S] WHO DWELL IN THE WILDERNESS 24all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed tribes who dwell in the desert;
25AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF ZIMRI AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF ELAM AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF MEDIA 25all the kings of Zimri, Elam, and Media;
26AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] KINGS OF THE NORTH <THE> NEAR AND <THE> FAR EACH TO BROTHER HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL THE KINGDOMS OF THE EARTH WHICH [ARE] ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE GROUND AND [THE] KING OF SHESHACH HE WILL DRINK AFTER THEM 26all the kings of the north, both near and far, one after another— all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshach*NoteCloseSheshach is a code name for Babylon. will drink it too.
27AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL DRINK AND BECOME DRUNK AND VOMIT AND FALL DOWN AND NOT YOU WILL RISE <FROM> BECAUSE OF THE SWORD WHICH I [AM] ABOUT TO SEND BETWEEN YOU 27“Then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Drink, get drunk, and vomit. Fall down and never get up again, because of the sword I will send among you.’
28AND IT WILL BE THAT THEY WILL REFUSE TO TAKE THE CUP FROM HAND YOUR TO DRINK AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS CERTAINLY <TO DRINK> YOU WILL DRINK 28If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink it, you are to tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘You most certainly must drink it!
29FOR HERE! ON THE CITY WHICH IT IS CALLED NAME MY ON IT I [AM] BEGINNING TO DO HARM AND YOU CERTAINLY <TO EXEMPT FROM PUNISHMENT> WILL YOU BE EXEMPT FROM PUNISHMENT? NOT YOU WILL BE EXEMPT FROM PUNISHMENT FOR A SWORD I [AM] CALLING ON ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS 29For behold, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears My Name, so how could you possibly go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of Hosts.’
30AND YOU YOU WILL PROPHESY TO THEM <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS <THE> THESE AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM YAHWEH FROM A HIGH PLACE HE WILL ROAR AND FROM [THE] DWELLING OF HOLINESS HIS HE WILL GIVE FORTH VOICE HIS CERTAINLY <TO ROAR> HE WILL ROAR ON HABITATION HIS A SHOUT LIKE [THOSE WHO] TREAD HE WILL SING TO ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH 30So you are to prophesy all these words against them and say to them: ‘The LORD will roar from on high; He will raise His voice from His holy habitation. He will roar loudly over His pasture; like those who tread the grapes, He will call out with a shout against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31IT HAS COME AN UPROAR TO [THE] END OF THE EARTH FOR A CONTROVERSY [BELONGS] TO YAHWEH ON THE NATIONS [IS] ABOUT TO ENTER INTO JUDGMENT HE TO ALL FLESH THE WICKED [PEOPLE] HE HAS DELIVERED UP THEM TO THE SWORD [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 31The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth because the LORD brings a charge against the nations. He brings judgment on all mankind and puts the wicked to the sword,’” declares the LORD.
32THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS THERE! CALAMITY [IS] ABOUT TO GO FORTH FROM NATION TO NATION AND A STORM GREAT IT WILL BE ROUSED FROM [THE] REMOTEST PARTS OF [THE] EARTH 32This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold! Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth.”
33AND THEY WILL BE [THOSE] SLAIN OF YAHWEH ON THE DAY <THE> THAT FROM [THE] END OF THE EARTH AND TO [THE] END OF THE EARTH NOT THEY WILL BE MOURNED AND NOT THEY WILL BE GATHERED AND NOT THEY WILL BE BURIED <INTO> DUNG ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE GROUND THEY WILL BECOME 33Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned, gathered, or buried. They will be like dung lying on the ground.
34WAIL O SHEPHERDS AND CRY OUT AND ROLL IN ASHES O NOBLE [ONES] OF THE FLOCK FOR THEY HAVE BEEN COMPLETED DAYS YOUR TO SLAUGHTER AND DISPERSIONS YOUR AND YOU WILL FALL LIKE A VESSEL OF DESIRE The Cry of the Shepherds 34Wail, you shepherds, and cry out; roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. For the days of your slaughter have come; you will fall and be shattered like fine pottery.*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX you will fall like the best of the rams
35AND IT WILL BE LOST A PLACE OF ESCAPE FROM THE SHEPHERDS AND ESCAPE FROM [THE] NOBLE [ONES] OF THE FLOCK 35Flight will evade the shepherds, and escape will elude the leaders of the flock.
36[THE] SOUND OF [THE] CRY OF DISTRESS OF THE SHEPHERDS AND [THE] WAILING OF [THE] NOBLE [ONES] OF THE FLOCK FOR [IS] DESTROYING YAHWEH <OBJ.> PASTURE THEIR 36Hear the cry of the shepherds, the wailing of the leaders of the flock, for the LORD is destroying their pasture.
37AND THEY WILL BE DEVASTATED [THE] PASTURES OF <THE> PEACE <FROM> BECAUSE OF [THE] BURNING OF [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH 37The peaceful meadows have been silenced because of the LORD’s burning anger.
38HE HAS LEFT LIKE <THE> YOUNG LION LAIR HIS FOR IT HAS BECOME LAND THEIR <INTO> A WASTE <FROM> BECAUSE OF [THE] ANGER OF THE OPPRESSOR AND <FROM> BECAUSE OF [THE] BURNING OF ANGER HIS 38He has left His den like a lion, for their land has been made a desolation by the sword*NoteCloseSome Hebrew manuscripts and LXX (see also Jeremiah 46:16 and Jeremiah 50:16); most Hebrew manuscripts anger of the oppressor, and because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
