22HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO GIVE COMMAND [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND I WILL BRING BACK THEM TO THE CITY <THE> THIS AND THEY WILL FIGHT ON IT AND THEY WILL CAPTURE IT AND THEY WILL BURN IT WITH <THE> FIRE AND <OBJ.> [THE] CITIES OF JUDAH I WILL MAKE A WASTE FROM NOT INHABITANT 22Behold, I am going to give the command, declares the LORD, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, capture it, and burn it down. And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”
1THE WORD WHICH IT CAME TO JEREMIAH FROM WITH YAHWEH IN [THE] DAYS OF JEHOIAKIM [THE] SON OF JOSIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH <TO> SAYING The Obedience of the Rechabites 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:
2GO TO [THE] HOUSE OF THE RECHABITES AND YOU WILL SPEAK <OBJ.> THEM AND YOU WILL BRING THEM [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH TO ONE OF THE ROOMS AND YOU WILL GIVE TO DRINK <OBJ.> THEM WINE 2“Go to the house of the Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them to one of the chambers of the house of the LORD to offer them a drink of wine.”
3AND I TOOK <OBJ.> JAAZANIAH [THE] SON OF JEREMIAH [THE] SON HABAZZINIAH AND <OBJ.> BROTHERS HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL CHILDREN HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSE OF THE RECHABITES 3So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons— the entire house of the Rechabites—
4AND I BROUGHT <OBJ.> THEM [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH TO [THE] ROOM OF [THE] SONS OF HANAN [THE] SON IGDALIAH [THE] MAN OF <THE> GOD WHICH [WAS] BESIDE [THE] ROOM OF THE OFFICIALS WHICH [WAS] FROM ABOVE <TO> [THE] ROOM OF MAASEIAH [THE] SON OF SHALLUM [THE] KEEPER OF THE THRESHOLD 4and I brought them into the house of the LORD, to a chamber occupied by the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, a man of God. This room was near the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper.
5AND I PUT <TO> BEFORE [THE] SONS OF [THE] HOUSE OF THE RECHABITES BOWLS FULL WINE AND CUPS AND I SAID TO THEM DRINK WINE 5Then I set pitchers full of wine and some cups before the men of the house of the Rechabites, and I said to them, “Drink some wine.”
6AND THEY SAID NOT WE DRINK WINE FOR JONADAB [THE] SON OF RECHAB ANCESTOR OUR HE COMMANDED TO US <TO> SAYING NOT YOU MUST DRINK WINE YOU AND CHILDREN YOUR UNTIL PERPETUITY 6“We do not drink wine,” they replied, “for our forefather Jonadab*NoteCloseJonadab is a variant of Jehonadab; here and throughout this chapter; see 2 Kings 10:15. son of Rechab commanded us, ‘Neither you nor your descendants are ever to drink wine.
7AND A HOUSE NOT YOU MUST BUILD AND SEED NOT YOU MUST SOW AND A VINEYARD NOT YOU MUST PLANT AND NOT IT WILL BELONG TO <THE> YOU FOR IN TENTS YOU WILL DWELL ALL DAYS YOUR SO THAT YOU MAY LIVE DAYS MANY ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE GROUND WHERE YOU [ARE] SOJOURNING THERE 7Nor are you ever to build a house or sow seed or plant a vineyard. Those things are not for you. Instead, you must live in tents all your lives, so that you may live a long time in the land where you wander
8AND WE HAVE LISTENED TO [THE] VOICE OF JONADAB [THE] SON OF RECHAB ANCESTOR OUR TO ALL THAT HE COMMANDED US TO NOT TO DRINK WINE ALL DAYS OUR WE WIVES OUR SONS OUR AND DAUGHTERS OUR 8And we have obeyed the voice of our forefather Jonadab son of Rechab in all he commanded us. So we have not drunk wine all our lives— neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters.
9AND TO NOT TO BUILD HOUSES TO DWELL IN WE AND VINEYARD AND FIELD AND SEED NOT IT BELONGS TO <THE> US 9Nor have we built houses in which to live, and we have not owned any vineyards or fields or crops.
10AND WE HAVE DWELT IN <THE> TENTS AND WE HAVE OBEYED AND WE HAVE DONE ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE COMMANDED US JONADAB ANCESTOR OUR 10But we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done exactly as our forefather Jonadab commanded us.
11AND IT WAS WHEN CAME UP NEBUCHADNEZZAR [THE] KING OF BABYLON AGAINST THE LAND AND WE SAID COME SO WE MAY GO JERUSALEM <FROM> BECAUSE OF [THE] ARMY OF THE CHALDEANS AND FROM BEFORE [THE] ARMY OF ARAM AND WE HAVE DWELT IN JERUSALEM 11So when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched into the land, we said: ‘Come, let us go into Jerusalem to escape the armies of the Chaldeans*NoteCloseThat is, the Babylonians and the Arameans.’ So we have remained in Jerusalem.”
12AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO JEREMIAH <TO> SAYING Judah Rebuked 12Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
13THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL GO AND YOU WILL SAY TO [THE] MAN OF JUDAH AND TO [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM ¿ NOT WILL YOU ACCEPT CORRECTION TO LISTEN TO WORDS MY [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 13“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem: ‘Will you not accept discipline and obey My words?’ declares the LORD.
14IT WAS CARRIED OUT <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF JONADAB [THE] SON OF RECHAB WHICH HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> CHILDREN HIS TO NOT TO DRINK WINE AND NOT THEY HAVE DRUNK UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS FOR THEY HAVE OBEYED <OBJ.> [THE] COMMANDMENT OF ANCESTOR THEIR AND I I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU RISING EARLY AND SPEAKING AND NOT YOU HAVE LISTENED TO ME 14The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have not drunk it to this very day because they have obeyed the command of their forefather. 15AND I SENT TO YOU <OBJ.> ALL SERVANTS MY THE PROPHETS RISING EARLY AND SENDING <TO> SAYING TURN BACK PLEASE EVERYONE FROM WAY HIS <THE> EVIL AND MAKE GOOD DEEDS YOUR AND MAY NOT YOU WALK AFTER GODS OTHER TO SERVE THEM AND DWELL TO THE LAND WHICH I GAVE TO YOU AND TO ANCESTORS YOUR AND NOT YOU INCLINED <OBJ.> EAR YOUR AND NOT YOU LISTENED TO ME 15Again and again I have sent you*NoteCloseLiterally Rising up early and sending (you), I have sent you all My servants the prophets, proclaiming: ‘Turn now, each of you, from your wicked ways, and correct your actions. Do not go after other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear or listened to Me.
16FOR THEY HAVE CARRIED OUT [THE] SONS OF JONADAB [THE] SON OF RECHAB <OBJ.> [THE] COMMANDMENT OF ANCESTOR THEIR WHICH HE COMMANDED THEM AND THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS NOT THEY HAVE LISTENED TO ME 16Yes, the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab carried out the command their forefather gave them, but these people have not listened to Me.
17<TO> THEREFORE THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO BRING TO JUDAH AND TO ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM <OBJ.> ALL THE CALAMITY WHICH I SPOKE ON THEM BECAUSE I SPOKE TO THEM AND NOT THEY LISTENED AND I CALLED TO <THE> THEM AND NOT THEY ANSWERED 17Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring to Judah and to all the residents of Jerusalem all the disaster I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they have not obeyed, and I have called to them but they have not answered.’”
18AND TO [THE] HOUSE OF THE RECHABITES HE SAID JEREMIAH THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL BECAUSE THAT YOU HAVE LISTENED TO [THE] COMMANDMENT OF JONADAB ANCESTOR YOUR AND YOU HAVE KEPT <OBJ.> ALL COMMANDMENTS HIS AND YOU HAVE DONE ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> YOU 18Then Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites: “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you have obeyed the command of your forefather Jonadab and have kept all his commandments and have done all that he charged you to do,
19<TO> THEREFORE THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL NOT IT WILL BE CUT OFF A MAN TO JONADAB [THE] SON OF RECHAB [WHO] WILL STAND <TO> BEFORE ME ALL THE DAYS 19this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will never fail to have a man to stand before Me.’”
