19<TO> THEREFORE THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL NOT IT WILL BE CUT OFF A MAN TO JONADAB [THE] SON OF RECHAB [WHO] WILL STAND <TO> BEFORE ME ALL THE DAYS 19this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will never fail to have a man to stand before Me.’”
1AND IT WAS IN THE YEAR <THE> FOURTH OF JEHOIAKIM [THE] SON OF JOSIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH IT CAME THE WORD <THE> THIS TO JEREMIAH FROM WITH YAHWEH <TO> SAYING Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Temple 1In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD
2TAKE FOR <THE> YOURSELF A SCROLL OF A DOCUMENT AND YOU WILL WRITE TO IT <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS WHICH I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU ON ISRAEL AND ON JUDAH AND ON ALL THE NATIONS FROM [THE] DAY [WHEN] I SPOKE TO YOU FROM [THE] DAYS OF JOSIAH AND UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 2“Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you during the reign of Josiah until today.
3PERHAPS THEY WILL HEAR [THE] HOUSE OF JUDAH <OBJ.> ALL THE HARM WHICH I [AM] PLANNING TO DO TO <THE> THEM SO THAT THEY MAY TURN BACK EVERYONE FROM WAY HIS <THE> EVIL AND I WILL FORGIVE <TO> INIQUITY THEIR AND <TO> SIN THEIR 3Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about all the calamity I plan to bring upon them, each of them will turn from his wicked way. Then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
4AND HE CALLED JEREMIAH <OBJ.> BARUCH [THE] SON OF NERIAH AND HE WROTE BARUCH FROM [THE] MOUTH OF JEREMIAH <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORDS OF YAHWEH WHICH HE HAD SPOKEN TO HIM ON A SCROLL OF A DOCUMENT 4So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and at the dictation of Jeremiah, Baruch wrote on a scroll all the words that the LORD had spoken to Jeremiah.
5AND HE COMMANDED JEREMIAH <OBJ.> BARUCH <TO> SAYING I [AM] SHUT UP NOT I AM ABLE TO GO [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 5Then Jeremiah commanded Baruch, “I am restricted; I cannot enter the house of the LORD;
6AND YOU WILL GO YOU AND YOU WILL READ ALOUD IN THE SCROLL WHICH YOU HAVE WRITTEN FROM MOUTH MY <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF YAHWEH IN [THE] EARS OF THE PEOPLE [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH ON A DAY OF FASTING AND ALSO IN [THE] EARS OF ALL JUDAH WHO ARE COMING FROM CITIES THEIR YOU WILL READ ALOUD THEM 6so you are to go to the house of the LORD on a day of fasting, and in the hearing of the people you are to read the words of the LORD from the scroll you have written at my dictation. Read them in the hearing of all the people of Judah who are coming from their cities.
7PERHAPS IT WILL FALL SUPPLICATION THEIR <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH SO THEY MAY TURN BACK EVERYONE FROM WAY HIS <THE> EVIL FOR [IS] GREAT THE ANGER AND THE RAGE WHICH HE HAS SPOKEN YAHWEH AGAINST THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS 7Perhaps they will bring their petition before the LORD, and each one will turn from his wicked way; for great are the anger and fury that the LORD has pronounced against this people.”
8AND HE DID BARUCH [THE] SON OF NERIAH ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE HAD COMMANDED HIM JEREMIAH THE PROPHET TO READ ALOUD IN THE SCROLL [THE] WORDS OF YAHWEH [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 8So Baruch son of Neriah did everything that Jeremiah the prophet had commanded him. In the house of the LORD he read the words of the LORD from the scroll.
9AND IT WAS IN THE YEAR <THE> FIFTH OF JEHOIAKIM [THE] SON OF JOSIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH IN THE MONTH <THE> NINTH THEY PROCLAIMED A FAST <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH ALL THE PEOPLE IN JERUSALEM AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WERE COMING FROM [THE] CITIES OF JUDAH IN JERUSALEM 9Now in the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a fast before the LORD was proclaimed to all the people of Jerusalem and all who had come there from the cities of Judah.
10AND HE READ ALOUD BARUCH IN THE SCROLL <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF JEREMIAH [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH IN [THE] ROOM OF GEMARIAH [THE] SON OF SHAPHAN THE SCRIBE IN THE COURT <THE> UPPER [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] GATE OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH <THE> NEW IN [THE] EARS OF ALL THE PEOPLE 10From the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, which was in the upper courtyard at the opening of the New Gate of the house of the LORD, Baruch read from the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the hearing of all the people.
11AND HE HEARD MICAIAH [THE] SON OF GEMARIAH [THE] SON OF SHAPHAN <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORDS OF YAHWEH FROM ON THE SCROLL Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Palace 11When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD from the scroll,
12AND HE WENT DOWN [THE] HOUSE OF THE KING TO [THE] ROOM OF THE SCRIBE AND THERE! THERE ALL THE OFFICIALS [WERE] SITTING ELISHAMA THE SCRIBE AND DELAIAH [THE] SON OF SHEMAIAH AND ELNATHAN [THE] SON OF ACHBOR AND GEMARIAH [THE] SON OF SHAPHAN AND ZEDEKIAH [THE] SON OF HANANIAH AND ALL THE OFFICIALS 12he went down to the scribe’s chamber in the king’s palace, where all the officials were sitting: Elishama the scribe, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.
13AND HE TOLD TO <THE> THEM MICAIAH <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS WHICH HE HAD HEARD WHEN READ ALOUD BARUCH IN THE SCROLL IN [THE] EARS OF THE PEOPLE 13And Micaiah reported to them all the words he had heard Baruch read from the scroll in the hearing of the people.
14AND THEY SENT ALL THE OFFICIALS TO BARUCH <OBJ.> JEHUDI [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH [THE] SON OF SHELEMIAH [THE] SON OF CUSHI <TO> SAYING THE SCROLL WHICH YOU HAVE READ ALOUD IN <THE> IT IN [THE] EARS OF THE PEOPLE TAKE IT IN HAND YOUR AND COME AND HE TOOK BARUCH [THE] SON OF NERIAH <OBJ.> THE SCROLL IN HAND HIS AND HE WENT TO THEM 14Then all the officials sent word to Baruch through Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, saying, “Bring the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come here.” So Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll and went to them.
15AND THEY SAID TO HIM SIT PLEASE AND READ ALOUD IT IN EARS OUR AND HE READ [IT] ALOUD BARUCH IN EARS THEIR 15“Please sit down,” they said “and read it in our hearing.” So Baruch read it in their hearing.
16AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD THEY <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS THEY WERE IN DREAD EACH TO NEIGHBOR HIS AND THEY SAID TO BARUCH CERTAINLY <TO TELL> WE WILL TELL TO THE KING <OBJ.> ALL THE THINGS <THE> THESE 16When they had heard all these words, they turned to one another in fear and said to Baruch, “Surely we must report all these words to the king.”
17AND <OBJ.> BARUCH THEY ASKED <TO> SAYING TELL PLEASE TO <THE> US HOW? DID YOU WRITE <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS <THE> THESE FROM MOUTH HIS 17“Tell us now,” they asked Baruch, “how did you write all these words? Was it at Jeremiah’s dictation?”
18AND HE SAID TO <THE> THEM BARUCH FROM MOUTH HIS HE PROCLAIMED TO ME <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS <THE> THESE AND I [WAS] WRITING ON THE SCROLL WITH <THE> INK 18“It was at his dictation,” Baruch replied. “He recited all these words to me and I wrote them in ink on the scroll.”
19AND THEY SAID THE OFFICIALS TO BARUCH GO HIDE YOURSELF YOU AND JEREMIAH AND ANYONE MAY NOT HE KNOW WHERE? [ARE] YOU 19Then the officials said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah must hide yourselves and tell no one where you are.”
20AND THEY WENT TO THE KING [THE] COURT TOWARDS AND <OBJ.> THE SCROLL THEY HAD DEPOSITED IN [THE] ROOM OF ELISHAMA THE SCRIBE AND THEY TOLD IN [THE] EARS OF THE KING <OBJ.> ALL THE THINGS Jehoiakim Burns the Scroll 20So the officials went to the king in the courtyard. And having stored the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, they reported everything to the king.
21AND HE SENT THE KING <OBJ.> JEHUDI TO FETCH <OBJ.> THE SCROLL AND HE FETCHED IT FROM [THE] ROOM OF ELISHAMA THE SCRIBE AND HE READ ALOUD IT JEHUDI IN [THE] EARS OF THE KING AND IN [THE] EARS OF ALL THE OFFICIALS WHO WERE STANDING FROM WITH THE KING 21Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king and all the officials who were standing beside him.
22AND THE KING [WAS] SITTING [THE] HOUSE OF THE WINTER IN THE MONTH <THE> NINTH AND <OBJ.> THE FIRE-POT <TO> BEFORE HIM [WAS] KINDLED 22Since it was the ninth month, the king was sitting in his winter quarters with a fire burning before him.
23AND IT WAS WHEN READ ALOUD JEHUDI THREE DOORS AND FOUR HE TORE IT WITH [THE] KNIFE OF THE SCRIBE AND HE THREW [IT] INTO THE FIRE WHICH [WAS] TO THE FIRE-POT UNTIL WAS CONSUMED ALL THE SCROLL ON THE FIRE WHICH [WAS] ON THE FIRE-POT 23And as soon as Jehudi had read three or four columns, Jehoiakim would cut them off with a scribe’s knife and throw them into the firepot until the entire scroll had been consumed by the fire.
24AND NOT THEY WERE AFRAID AND NOT THEY TORE <OBJ.> CLOTHES THEIR THE KING AND ALL SERVANTS HIS WHO HEARD <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS <THE> THESE 24Yet in hearing all these words, the king and his servants did not become frightened or tear their garments.
25AND ALSO ELNATHAN AND DELAIAH AND GEMARIAH THEY HAD MADE ENTREATY WITH THE KING TO NOT TO BURN <OBJ.> THE SCROLL AND NOT HE LISTENED TO THEM 25Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.
26AND HE COMMANDED THE KING <OBJ.> JERAHMEEL [THE] SON OF THE KING AND <OBJ.> SERAIAH [THE] SON OF AZRIEL AND <OBJ.> SHELEMIAH [THE] SON OF ABDEEL TO SEIZE <OBJ.> BARUCH THE SCRIBE AND <OBJ.> JEREMIAH THE PROPHET AND HE HID THEM YAHWEH 26Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king, as well as Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them.
27AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO JEREMIAH AFTER BURNED THE KING <OBJ.> THE SCROLL AND <OBJ.> THE WORDS WHICH HE HAD WRITTEN BARUCH FROM [THE] MOUTH OF JEREMIAH <TO> SAYING Jeremiah Rewrites the Scroll 27After the king had burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
28RETURN TAKE FOR <THE> YOURSELF A SCROLL ANOTHER AND WRITE ON IT <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS <THE> FORMER WHICH THEY WERE ON THE SCROLL <THE> FORMER WHICH HE BURNED JEHOIAKIM [THE] KING OF JUDAH 28“Take another scroll and rewrite on it the very words that were on the original scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah has burned.
29AND TO JEHOIAKIM [THE] KING OF JUDAH YOU WILL SAY THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH YOU YOU BURNED <OBJ.> THE SCROLL <THE> THIS <TO> SAYING WHY? DID YOU WRITE ON IT <TO> SAYING CERTAINLY <COME> HE WILL COME [THE] KING OF BABYLON AND HE WILL DESTROY <OBJ.> THE LAND <THE> THIS AND HE WILL CAUSE TO CEASE FROM IT HUMAN BEING AND ANIMAL 29You are to proclaim concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah that this is what the LORD says: You have burned the scroll and said, ‘Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon would surely come and destroy this land and deprive it of man and beast?’
30<TO> THEREFORE THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH ON JEHOIAKIM [THE] KING OF JUDAH NOT HE WILL BELONG TO <THE> HIM [ONE WHO] SITS ON [THE] THRONE OF DAVID AND CORPSE HIS IT WILL BE THROWN OUT TO THE HEAT IN THE DAY AND TO THE FROST IN THE NIGHT 30Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on David’s throne, and his body will be thrown out and exposed to heat by day and frost by night.
31AND I WILL VISIT ON HIM AND ON OFFSPRING HIS AND ON SERVANTS HIS <OBJ.> INIQUITY THEIR AND I WILL BRING ON THEM AND ON [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM AND TO EVERYONE OF JUDAH <OBJ.> ALL THE CALAMITY WHICH I HAVE SPOKEN AGAINST THEM AND NOT THEY LISTENED 31I will punish him and his descendants and servants for their iniquity. I will bring on them, on the residents of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the calamity about which I warned them but they did not listen.”
32AND JEREMIAH HE TOOK A SCROLL ANOTHER AND HE GAVE IT TO BARUCH [THE] SON OF NERIAH THE SCRIBE AND HE WROTE ON IT FROM [THE] MOUTH OF JEREMIAH <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORDS OF THE SCROLL WHICH HE HAD BURNED JEHOIAKIM [THE] KING OF JUDAH IN THE FIRE AND AGAIN IT WAS ADDED TO THEM WORDS MANY LIKE THEM 32Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and at Jeremiah’s dictation he wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.
