Jeremiah Taken to Egypt
1 When Jeremiah had finished telling all the people all the words of the LORD their God— everything that the LORD had sent him to say—
2 AND HE SAID AZARIAH [THE] SON OF HOSHAIAH AND JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH AND ALL THE PEOPLE <THE> ARROGANT SAYING TO JEREMIAH FALSEHOOD YOU [ARE] SPEAKING NOT HE HAS SENT YOU YAHWEH GOD OUR <TO> SAYING NOT YOU MUST GO EGYPT TO SOJOURN THERE
2 Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to reside there
3 FOR BARUCH [THE] SON OF NERIAH [IS] INCITING <OBJ.> YOU AGAINST <THE> US SO AS TO GIVE <OBJ.> US IN [THE] HAND OF THE CHALDEANS TO PUT TO DEATH <OBJ.> US AND TO TAKE INTO EXILE <OBJ.> US BABYLON
3 Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, so that they may put us to death or exile us to Babylon!”
4 AND NOT HE LISTENED JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH AND ALL [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMIES AND ALL THE PEOPLE TO [THE] VOICE OF YAHWEH TO REMAIN IN [THE] LAND OF JUDAH
4 So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces disobeyed the command of the LORD to stay in the land of Judah.
5 AND HE TOOK JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH AND ALL [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMIES <OBJ.> ALL [THE] REMNANT OF JUDAH WHO THEY HAD COME BACK FROM ALL THE NATIONS WHERE THEY HAD BEEN DRIVEN AWAY THERE TO SOJOURN IN [THE] LAND OF JUDAH
5 Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the whole remnant of Judah, those who had returned to the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been scattered,
6 <OBJ.> THE MEN AND <OBJ.> THE WOMEN AND <OBJ.> THE LITTLE ONE[S] AND <OBJ.> [THE] DAUGHTERS OF THE KING AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> PERSON WHOM HE HAD LEFT NEBUZARADAN [THE] CHIEF OF [THE] BODYGUARDS WITH GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM [THE] SON OF SHAPHAN AND <OBJ.> JEREMIAH THE PROPHET AND <OBJ.> BARUCH [THE] SON OF NERIAH
6 the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, and everyone whom Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had allowed to remain with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.
7 AND THEY WENT [THE] LAND OF EGYPT FOR NOT THEY HAD LISTENED TO [THE] VOICE OF YAHWEH AND THEY CAME TO TAHPANHES
7 So they entered the land of Egypt because they did not obey the voice of the LORD, and they went as far as Tahpanhes.
8 AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO JEREMIAH IN TAHPANHES <TO> SAYING
8 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes:
9 TAKE IN HAND YOUR STONES LARGE AND YOU WILL HIDE THEM IN THE MORTAR IN THE BRICK-TERRACE WHICH [IS] AT [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] HOUSE OF PHARAOH IN TAHPANHES TO [THE] EYES OF [THE] PEOPLE JEWS
9 “In the sight of the Jews, pick up some large stones and bury them in the clay of the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace at Tahpanhes.
10 AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO SEND AND I WILL FETCH <OBJ.> NEBUCHADNEZZAR [THE] KING OF BABYLON SERVANT MY AND I WILL SET THRONE HIS FROM ABOVE <TO> THE STONES <THE> THESE WHICH I HAVE HIDDEN AND HE WILL SPREAD OUT <OBJ.> STATE TENT HIS OVER THEM
10 Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will send for My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones that I have embedded, and he will spread his royal pavilion over them.
11 AND HE WILL COME AND HE WILL ATTACK <OBJ.> [THE] LAND OF EGYPT [THOSE] WHO [ARE] FOR <THE> DEATH TO <THE> DEATH AND [THOSE] WHO [ARE] FOR <THE> CAPTIVITY TO <THE> CAPTIVITY AND [THOSE] WHO [ARE] FOR THE SWORD TO THE SWORD
11 He will come and strike down the land of Egypt, bringing death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and the sword to those destined for the sword.
12 AND I WILL KINDLE FIRE IN [THE] HOUSES OF [THE] GODS OF EGYPT AND HE WILL BURN THEM AND HE WILL TAKE CAPTIVE THEM AND HE WILL DELOUSE <OBJ.> [THE] LAND OF EGYPT JUST AS HE DELOUSES THE SHEPHERD <OBJ.> GARMENT HIS AND HE WILL GO OUT FROM THERE IN PEACE
12 I will kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and Nebuchadnezzar will burn those temples and take their gods as captives. So he will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will depart from there unscathed.
13 AND HE WILL BREAK <OBJ.> [THE] SACRED PILLARS OF BETH SHEMESH WHICH [IS] IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSES OF [THE] GODS OF EGYPT HE WILL BURN WITH <THE> FIRE
13 He will demolish the sacred pillars of the temple of the sun in the land of Egypt, and he will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.’”
