The Army of Locusts
(Amos 7:1–9 )
1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion;
sound the alarm on My holy mountain!
Let all who dwell in the land tremble,
for the Day of the LORD is coming;
indeed, it is near—
2 A DAY OF DARKNESS AND GLOOM A DAY OF CLOUD AND THICK DARKNESS LIKE DAWN SPREAD OUT OVER THE MOUNTAINS A PEOPLE NUMEROUS AND MIGHTY LIKE IT NOT IT HAS OCCURRED SINCE <THE> ANTIQUITY AND AFTER IT NOT IT WILL REPEAT UNTIL YEARS OF A GENERATION AND A GENERATION
2 a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and blackness.
Like the dawn overspreading the mountains
a great and strong army appears,
such as never was of old,
nor will ever be in ages to come.
3 <TO> BEFORE IT IT HAS CONSUMED FIRE AND AFTER IT IT SETS ABLAZE A FLAME [IS] LIKE [THE] GARDEN OF EDEN THE LAND <TO> BEFORE IT AND AFTER IT A WILDERNESS OF DESOLATION AND ALSO ESCAPE NOT IT BELONGS TO IT
3 Before them a fire devours,
and behind them a flame scorches.
The land before them is like the Garden of Eden,
but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland—
surely nothing will escape them.
4 [IS] LIKE [THE] APPEARANCE OF HORSES APPEARANCE ITS AND LIKE HORSEMEN SO THEY RUN !
4 Their appearance is like that of horses,
and they gallop like swift steeds.
5 LIKE [THE] SOUND OF CHARIOTS OVER [THE] TOPS OF THE MOUNTAINS THEY LEAP ! LIKE [THE] SOUND OF A FLAME OF FIRE CONSUMING STUBBLE LIKE A PEOPLE MIGHTY DEPLOYED OF BATTLE
5 With a sound like that of chariots
they bound over the mountaintops,
like the crackling of fire consuming stubble,
like a mighty army deployed for battle.
6 FROM BEFORE IT THEY ARE IN ANGUISH PEOPLES ALL FACES THEY GATHER A GLOW
6 Nations writhe in horror before them;
every face turns pale.
7 LIKE WARRIORS THEY RUN ! LIKE MEN OF WAR THEY GO UP A WALL AND EACH ON WAYS ITS THEY GO ! AND NOT THEY EXCHANGE ! PATHS THEIR
7 They charge like mighty men;
they scale the walls like men of war.
Each one marches in formation,
not swerving from the course.
8 AND EACH BROTHER ITS NOT THEY CROWD ! A MAN ON TRACK ITS THEY GO ! AND THROUGH THE WEAPON[S] THEY FALL NOT THEY STOP
8 They do not jostle one another;
each proceeds in his path.
They burst through the defenses,
never breaking ranks.
9 ON THE CITY THEY RUSH ON THE WALL THEY RUN ! IN THE HOUSES THEY GO UP THROUGH THE WINDOWS THEY GO LIKE <THE> THIEF
9 They storm the city;
they run along the wall;
they climb into houses,
entering through windows like thieves.
10 <TO> BEFORE IT IT TREMBLES [THE] EARTH THEY SHAKE [THE] HEAVENS SUN AND MOON THEY BECOME DARK AND [THE] STARS THEY WITHDRAW BRIGHTNESS THEIR
10 Before them the earth quakes;
the heavens tremble.
The sun and moon grow dark,
and the stars lose their brightness.
11 AND YAHWEH HE GIVES FORTH VOICE HIS <TO> BEFORE ARMY HIS FOR [IS] GREAT VERY CAMP HIS FOR [IS] MIGHTY [THE] [ONE WHO] DOES <OF> WORD HIS FOR [IS] GREAT [THE] DAY OF YAHWEH AND AWESOME EXCEEDINGLY AND WHO? WILL HE ENDURE IT
11 The LORD raises His voice
in the presence of His army.
Indeed, His camp is very large,
for mighty are those who obey His command.
For the Day of the LORD is great and very dreadful.
Who can endure it?
12 AND ALSO NOW [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH RETURN TO ME WITH ALL HEART YOUR AND WITH FASTING AND WITH WEEPING AND WITH WAILING
Return with All Your Heart
12 “Yet even now,”
declares the LORD,
“return to Me with all your heart,
with fasting, weeping, and mourning.”
13 AND TEAR HEART YOUR AND MAY NOT [IT BE] GARMENTS YOUR AND RETURN TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR FOR [IS] GRACIOUS AND COMPASSIONATE HE LONG OF ANGER<S> AND GREAT OF COVENANT LOYALTY AND RELENTING ON <THE> HARM
13 So rend your hearts and not your garments,
and return to the LORD your God.
For He is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion.
And He relents from sending disaster.
14 WHO? [IS] KNOWING HE WILL TURN AND HE WILL RELENT AND HE WILL LEAVE BEHIND HIM A BLESSING A GRAIN OFFERING AND A DRINK OFFERING FOR YAHWEH GOD YOUR
14 Who knows? He may turn and relent
and leave a blessing behind Him—
grain and drink offerings
for the LORD your God.
15 GIVE A BLAST ON A RAM'S HORN IN ZION CONSECRATE A FAST CALL AN ASSEMBLY
15 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion,
consecrate a fast,
proclaim a sacred assembly.
16 GATHER [THE] PEOPLE CONSECRATE AN ASSEMBLY GATHER [THE] ELDERS GATHER CHILDREN AND SUCKLING-CHILDREN OF BREASTS LET HIM GO OUT [THE] BRIDEGROOM FROM ROOM HIS AND [THE] BRIDE FROM CHAMBER HER
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation,
assemble the aged, gather the children,
even those nursing at the breast.
Let the bridegroom leave his room,
and the bride her chamber.
17 BETWEEN THE PORCH AND TO THE ALTAR LET THEM WEEP THE PRIESTS [THE] SERVANTS OF YAHWEH AND LET THEM SAY HAVE COMPASSION ! O YAHWEH ON PEOPLE YOUR AND MAY NOT YOU MAKE INHERITANCE YOUR INTO A REPROACH TO MOCK ON <THE> THEM NATIONS <TO> WHY? WILL PEOPLE SAY AMONG THE PEOPLES WHERE? [IS] GOD THEIR
17 Let the priests who minister before the LORD
weep between the portico and the altar,
saying, “Spare Your people, O LORD,
and do not make Your heritage a reproach,
an object of scorn among the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’”
18 AND HE BECAME JEALOUS YAHWEH FOR LAND HIS AND HE HAD COMPASSION ON PEOPLE HIS
Restoration Promised
18 Then the LORD became jealous for His land,
and He spared His people.
19 AND HE ANSWERED YAHWEH AND HE SAID TO PEOPLE HIS HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO SEND TO YOU <OBJ.> <THE> GRAIN AND <THE> NEW WINE AND <THE> FRESH OIL AND YOU WILL BE SATISFIED WITH IT AND NOT I WILL MAKE <OBJ.> YOU AGAIN A REPROACH AMONG THE NATIONS
19 And the LORD answered His people:
“Behold, I will send you
grain, new wine, and oil,
and by them you will be satisfied.
I will never again make you
a reproach among the nations.
20 AND <OBJ.> THE NORTHERNER[S] I WILL REMOVE FAR AWAY FROM WITH <THE> YOU AND I WILL DRIVE AWAY IT INTO A LAND DRY AND DESOLATION <OBJ.> FACE ITS INTO THE SEA <THE> EASTERN AND END ITS INTO THE SEA <THE> WESTERN AND IT WILL GO UP STENCH ITS AND IT WILL GO UP FOUL SMELL ITS FOR HE HAS MADE GREAT TO DO
20 The northern army I will drive away from you,
banishing it to a barren and desolate land,
its front ranks into the Eastern Sea,
and its rear guard into the Western Sea.
And its stench will rise;
its foul odor will ascend.
For He has done great things.
21 MAY NOT YOU FEAR O LAND BE GLAD AND REJOICE FOR HE HAS MADE GREAT YAHWEH TO DO
21 Do not be afraid, O land;
rejoice and be glad,
for the LORD has done great things.
22 MAY NOT YOU FEAR O ANIMALS OF [THE] FIELD FOR THEY ARE GREEN [THE] PASTURES OF [THE] WILDERNESS FOR [THE] TREE[S] IT HAS BORNE FRUIT ITS [THE] FIG TREE AND [THE] VINE THEY HAVE GIVEN STRENGTH THEIR
22 Do not be afraid, O beasts of the field,
for the open pastures have turned green, the trees bear their fruit,
and the fig tree and vine yield their best.
23 AND O PEOPLE OF ZION BE GLAD AND REJOICE IN YAHWEH GOD YOUR FOR HE HAS GIVEN TO YOU <OBJ.> THE EARLY RAIN FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HE HAS SENT DOWN FOR YOU RAIN EARLY RAIN AND SPRING RAIN IN THE FIRST [MONTH]
23 Be glad, O children of Zion,
and rejoice in the LORD your God,
for He has given you the autumn rains
for your vindication.
He sends you showers,
both autumn and spring rains, as before.
24 AND THEY WILL BE FULL THE THRESHING FLOORS GRAIN AND THEY WILL OVERFLOW THE WINE-VATS NEW WINE AND FRESH OIL
24 The threshing floors will be full of grain,
and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.
25 AND I WILL RESTORE TO YOU <OBJ.> THE YEARS WHICH IT HAS EATEN THE LOCUST[S] THE LOCUST[S] AND THE LOCUST[S] AND THE LOCUST[S] ARMY MY <THE> GREAT WHICH I SENT AMONG YOU
25 I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts—
the swarming locust, the young locust,
the destroying locust, and the devouring locust
My great army that I sent against you.
26 AND YOU WILL EAT COMPLETELY <TO EAT> AND BEING SATISFIED AND YOU WILL PRAISE <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR WHO HE HAS DEALT WITH YOU BY DOING WONDERFULLY AND NOT THEY WILL BE ASHAMED PEOPLE MY FOR EVER
26 You will have plenty to eat,
until you are satisfied.
You will praise the name of the LORD your God,
who has worked wonders for you.
My people will never again
be put to shame.
27 AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT [AM] IN [THE] MIDST OF ISRAEL I AND I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR AND THERE NOT [IS] YET AND NOT THEY WILL BE ASHAMED PEOPLE MY FOR EVER
27 Then you will know that I am present in Israel
and that I am the LORD your God,
and there is no other.
My people will never again
be put to shame.
28 AND IT WILL BE AFTER THUS I WILL POUR OUT <OBJ.> SPIRIT MY ON ALL FLESH AND THEY WILL PROPHESY SONS YOUR AND DAUGHTERS YOUR OLD [MEN] YOUR DREAMS THEY WILL DREAM ! YOUNG MEN YOUR VISIONS THEY WILL SEE
I Will Pour Out My Spirit
(Acts 2:14–36 )
28 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
29 AND ALSO ON THE [MALE] SERVANTS AND ON THE FEMALE SERVANTS IN THE DAYS <THE> THOSE I WILL POUR OUT <OBJ.> SPIRIT MY
29 Even on My menservants and maidservants,
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
30 AND I WILL PUT WONDERS IN THE HEAVENS AND ON THE EARTH BLOOD AND FIRE AND COLUMNS OF SMOKE
30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth,
blood and fire and columns of smoke.
31 THE SUN IT WILL BE CHANGED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD <TO> BEFORE COMES [THE] DAY OF YAHWEH <THE> GREAT AND <THE> AWESOME
31 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the LORD.
32 AND IT WILL BE EVERY [ONE] WHO HE WILL CALL ON [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH HE WILL ESCAPE FOR ON [THE] MOUNTAIN OF ZION AND IN JERUSALEM IT WILL BE AN ESCAPED REMNANT JUST AS HE HAS SAID YAHWEH AND AMONG THE SURVIVORS WHOM YAHWEH [WILL BE] CALLING
32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD
will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance, as the LORD has promised,
among the remnant called by the LORD.
