57HAD GIVEN NOW ALSO THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE PHARISEES COMMANDS THAT IF ANYONE SHALL KNOW WHERE HE IS HE SHALL SHOW [IT], SO THAT THEY MAY SEIZE HIM. 57But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
1<THE> THEREFORE JESUS BEFORE SIX DAYS THE PASSOVER CAME TO BETHANY, WHERE WAS LAZARUS WHO HAVING DIED WHOM RAISED OUT FROM [THE] DEAD <THE> JESUS. Mary Anoints Jesus (Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; Luke 7:36–50) 1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
2THEY MADE THEREFORE FOR HIM A SUPPER THERE, AND <THE> MARTHA WAS SERVING; <THE> AND LAZARUS ONE WAS OF THOSE RECLINING WITH HIM. 2So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him.
3<THE> THEREFORE MARY HAVING TAKEN A LITRA OF FRAGRANT OIL OF NARD PURE OF GREAT PRICE ANOINTED THE FEET <THE> OF JESUS AND WIPED WITH THE HAIR OF HER THE FEET OF HIM; THE NOW HOUSE WAS FILLED WITH THE FRAGRANCE OF THE OIL. 3Then Mary took about a pint*NoteCloseGreek a litra; that is, approximately 12 ounces or 340 grams of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4SAYS HOWEVER JUDAS OF SIMON <THE> ISCARIOT ONE OF THE DISCIPLES OF HIM, WHO IS BEING ABOUT HIM TO BETRAY; 4But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray Him, asked,
5BECAUSE OF WHY THIS <THE> FRAGRANT OIL NOT WAS SOLD FOR THREE HUNDRED DENARII AND GIVEN TO [THE] POOR? 5“Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii*NoteCloseA denarius was customarily a day’s wage for a laborer; see Matthew 20:2. and the money given to the poor? ”
6HE SAID HOWEVER THIS NOT BECAUSE FOR THE POOR HE WAS CARING TO HIM, BUT BECAUSE A THIEF HE WAS AND THE MONEY BAG HAVING AND THAT BEING PUT INTO [IT] HE WAS PILFERING. 6Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it.
7SAID THEREFORE <THE> JESUS; DO LEAVE ALONE HER, SO THAT FOR THE DAY OF THE BURIAL OF MINE SHE MAY KEEP IT; 7“Leave her alone, ” Jesus replied. “She has kept this perfume in preparation for the day of My burial.
8THE POOR FOR ALWAYS YOU HAVE WITH YOURSELVES, ME MYSELF HOWEVER NOT ALWAYS YOU HAVE. 8The poor you will always have with you,*NoteCloseSee Deuteronomy 15:11. but you will not always have Me. ”
9KNEW THEREFORE <THE> A CROWD GREAT OF THE JEWS THAT THERE HE IS, AND THEY CAME NOT BECAUSE OF <THE> JESUS ONLY BUT THAT ALSO <THE> LAZARUS THEY MAY SEE WHOM HE HAD RAISED OUT FROM [THE] DEAD. The Plot to Kill Lazarus 9Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was there. And they came not only because of Him, but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
10TOOK COUNSEL HOWEVER THE CHIEF PRIESTS THAT ALSO <THE> LAZARUS THEY MAY KILL, 10So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
11BECAUSE MANY ON ACCOUNT OF HIM WERE GOING AWAY OF THE JEWS AND WERE BELIEVING IN <THE> JESUS. 11for on account of him many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.
12ON THE NEXT DAY THE CROWD GREAT <THE> HAVING COME TO THE FEAST, HAVING HEARD THAT IS COMING <THE> JESUS INTO JERUSALEM, The Triumphal Entry (Zechariah 9:9–13; Matthew 21:1–11; Mark 11:1–11; Luke 19:28–40) 12The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
13TOOK THE BRANCHES OF THE PALM TREES AND WENT OUT TO MEET HIM AND WERE SHOUTING: HOSANNA! BLESSED [IS] THE [ONE] COMING IN [THE] NAME OF [THE] LORD! AND THE KING <THE> OF ISRAEL! 13They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting: “Hosanna!”*NoteCloseHosanna is a transliteration of the Hebrew Hosia-na, meaning Save, we pray or Save now, which became a shout of praise; see Psalm 118:25. “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”*NoteClosePsalm 118:26 Blessed is the King of Israel!”
14HAVING FOUND THEN <THE> JESUS A YOUNG DONKEY HE SAT UPON IT, EVEN AS IT IS WRITTEN: 14Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written:
15NOT DO FEAR DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD THE KING OF YOU COMES SITTING ON A COLT OF A DONKEY. 15“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion. See, your King is coming, seated on the colt of a donkey.”*NoteCloseZechariah 9:9
16THESE THINGS NOW NOT KNEW OF HIM THE DISCIPLES FROM THE FIRST, BUT WHEN WAS GLORIFIED <THE> JESUS, THEN THEY REMEMBERED THAT THESE THINGS WERE ABOUT HIM WRITTEN AND THESE THINGS THEY HAD DONE TO HIM. 16At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized that these very things had also been written about Him.
17WAS BEARING WITNESS THEREFORE THE CROWD WHICH IS BEING WITH HIM WHEN <THE> LAZARUS HE CALLED OUT OF THE TOMB AND RAISED HIM OUT FROM [THE] DEAD. 17Meanwhile, many people who had been with Jesus when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify.
18ON ACCOUNT OF THIS ALSO MET WITH HIM THE CROWD, BECAUSE THEY HEARD THIS OF HIS TO HAVE DONE THE SIGN. 18That is also why the crowd went out to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign.
19<THE> THEREFORE THE PHARISEES SAID AMONG THEMSELVES; YOU SEE THAT NOT YOU GAIN NO [THING]? BEHOLD THE WORLD WHOLLY AFTER HIM HAS GONE. 19Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You can see that this is doing you no good. Look how the whole world has gone after Him! ”
20THERE WERE NOW GREEKS CERTAIN AMONG THOSE COMING UP THAT THEY MAY WORSHIP AT THE FEAST. Jesus Predicts His Death 20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.
21THESE THEREFORE CAME TO PHILIP WHO WAS FROM BETHSAIDA <THE> OF GALILEE AND THEY WERE ASKING HIM SAYING; SIR, WE DESIRE <THE> JESUS TO SEE. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus. ”
22COMES <THE> PHILIP AND TELLS <THE> ANDREW, AND AGAIN COME ANDREW AND PHILIP AND THEY TELL <THE> JESUS. 22Philip relayed this appeal to Andrew, and both of them went and told Jesus.
23<THE> AND JESUS ANSWERED TO THEM SAYING; HAS COME THE HOUR THAT MAY BE GLORIFIED THE SON <THE> OF MAN. 23But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU; ONLY UNLESS THE GRAIN <THE> OF WHEAT HAVING FALLEN INTO THE GROUND SHALL DIE, IT ALONE ABIDES; IF HOWEVER IT SHALL DIE, MUCH FRUIT IT BEARS. 24Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.
25THE [ONE] LOVING THE LIFE OF HIM LOSES IT, AND THE [ONE] HATING THE LIFE OF HIM IN <THE> WORLD THIS TO LIFE ETERNAL WILL KEEP IT. 25Whoever loves his life will lose it, but whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
26IF ME MYSELF ANYONE SHALL SERVE ME MYSELF HE SHOULD FOLLOW; AND WHERE AM I MYSELF, THERE ALSO THE SERVANT <THE> OF MINE WILL BE. AND IF ANYONE ME MYSELF SHALL SERVE, WILL HONOR HIM THE FATHER. 26If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, My servant will be as well. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
27NOW THE SOUL OF MINE HAS BEEN TROUBLED, AND WHAT SHALL I SAY? FATHER, DO SAVE ME FROM <THE> HOUR THIS.’? BUT ON ACCOUNT OF THIS I CAME TO <THE> HOUR THIS. 27Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it is for this purpose that I have come to this hour.
28FATHER, DO GLORIFY OF YOU THE NAME. CAME THEREFORE A VOICE FROM <THE> HEAVEN: BOTH I HAVE GLORIFIED [IT] AND AGAIN I WILL GLORIFY [IT]. 28Father, glorify Your name! ” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. ”
29<THE> THEREFORE THE CROWD WHICH ALREADY STANDING AND HAVING HEARD [IT] IT WAS SAYING [IT] THUNDER TO HAVE BEEN. OTHERS WERE SAYING; AN ANGEL TO HIM HAS SPOKEN. 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him.
30ANSWERED <THE> JESUS AND SAID: NOT BECAUSE OF ME MYSELF <THE> VOICE THIS HAS COME BUT BECAUSE OF YOU. 30In response, Jesus said, “This voice was not for My benefit, but yours.
31NOW [THE] JUDGMENT IS OF THE WORLD OF THIS; NOW THE PRINCE OF THE WORLD THIS WILL BE CAST OUT, 31Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out.
32AND I MYSELF IF I SHALL BE LIFTED UP FROM THE EARTH, ALL WILL DRAW TO MYSELF. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself. ”
33THIS NOW HE WAS SAYING SIGNIFYING BY WHAT DEATH HE WAS ABOUT TO DIE. 33He said this to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.
34ANSWERED THEREFORE TO HIM THE CROWD; WE OURSELVES HEARD FROM THE LAW THAT THE CHRIST ABIDES TO THE AGE, AND HOW SAY YOU YOURSELF THAT IT BEHOOVES TO BE LIFTED UP THE SON <THE> OF MAN? WHO IS THIS <THE> SON <THE> OF MAN? 34The crowd replied “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever. So how can You say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man? ”
35SAID THEREFORE TO THEM <THE> JESUS; YET A LITTLE WHILE THE LIGHT AMONG YOU IS. DO WALK WHILE THE LIGHT YOU HAVE, SO THAT NOT DARKNESS YOU MAY GRASP; AND THE [ONE] WALKING IN THE DARKNESS NOT KNOWS WHERE HE IS GOING. 35Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
36WHILE THE LIGHT YOU HAVE, DO BELIEVE IN THE LIGHT, SO THAT SONS OF LIGHT YOU MAY BECOME. THESE THINGS SPOKE <THE> JESUS, AND HAVING GONE AWAY HE WAS HIDDEN FROM THEM. 36While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light. ” After Jesus had spoken these things, He went away and was hidden from them.
37SO MANY HOWEVER OF HIM SIGNS HAVING BEEN DONE BEFORE THEM NOT THEY WERE BELIEVING IN HIM, Belief and Unbelief 37Although Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence they still did not believe in Him.
38SO THAT THE WORD OF ISAIAH THE PROPHET MAY BE FULFILLED THAT SAID: LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED IN THE REPORT OF US? AND THE ARM OF [THE] LORD TO WHOM HAS BEEN REVEALED? 38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”*NoteCloseIsaiah 53:1
39BECAUSE OF THIS NOT THEY WERE ABLE TO BELIEVE, FOR AGAIN SAID ISAIAH: 39For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says:
40HE HAS BLINDED OF THEM THE EYES AND HAS HARDENED OF THEM THE HEART, THAT NOT THEY MAY SEE WITH THE EYES AND MAY UNDERSTAND WITH THE HEART AND MAY TURN AND I WILL HEAL THEM. 40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they cannot see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 6:10
41THESE THINGS SAID ISAIAH BECAUSE HE SAW THE GLORY OF HIM AND SPOKE CONCERNING HIM. 41Isaiah said these things because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about Him.
42NEVERTHELESS INDEED EVEN OF THE RULERS MANY BELIEVED IN HIM, BUT ON ACCOUNT OF THE PHARISEES NOT THEY WERE CONFESSING, SO THAT NOT PUT OUT OF THE SYNAGOGUE THEY MAY BE. 42Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue.
43THEY LOVED FOR THE GLORY <THE> OF MEN MORE THAN THE GLORY <THE> OF GOD. 43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
44JESUS THEN CRIED OUT AND SAID; THE [ONE] BELIEVING IN ME MYSELF NOT HE BELIEVES IN ME MYSELF BUT IN THE [ONE] HAVING SENT ME; 44Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me alone, but in the One who sent Me.
45AND THE [ONE] BEHOLDING ME MYSELF HE BEHOLDS THE [ONE] HAVING SENT ME. 45And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me.
46I MYSELF A LIGHT INTO THE WORLD HAVE COME, SO THAT EVERYONE WHO IS BELIEVING IN ME MYSELF IN THE DARKNESS NOT MAY ABIDE. 46I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness.
47AND IF ANYONE MY SHALL HEAR <THE> DECLARATIONS AND NOT SHALL KEEP [THEM], I MYSELF NOT DO JUDGE HIM; NOT FOR I CAME THAT I MAY JUDGE THE WORLD BUT THAT I MAY SAVE THE WORLD. 47As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
48THE [ONE] REJECTING ME MYSELF AND NOT RECEIVING THE DECLARATIONS OF MINE HAS [ONE] JUDGING HIM: THE WORD WHICH I SPOKE, THAT [ONE] WILL JUDGE HIM IN THE LAST DAY. 48There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
49FOR I MYSELF FROM MYSELF NOT SPOKE, BUT THE HAVING SENT ME FATHER HIMSELF ME A COMMANDMENT HAS GIVEN WHAT I MAY SAY AND WHAT I MAY SPEAK. 49I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it.
50AND I KNOW THAT THE COMMANDMENT OF HIM LIFE ETERNAL IS. WHAT THEREFORE I MYSELF SPEAK EVEN AS HAS SAID TO ME THE FATHER, SO I SPEAK. 50And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say. ”
