18FOR [THE] HILL COUNTRY IT WILL BELONG TO <THE> YOU FOR [IS] FOREST IT AND YOU WILL CUT DOWN IT AND IT WILL BELONG TO <THE> YOU EXTREMITIES ITS FOR YOU WILL DISPOSSESS <OBJ.> THE CANAANITE[S] FOR CHARIOTRY OF IRON [BELONGS] TO <THE> HIM THAT [IS] STRONG HE 18because the hill country will be yours as well. It is a forest; clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours. Although the Canaanites have iron chariots and although they are strong, you can drive them out
1AND THEY ASSEMBLED ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL SHILOH AND THEY CAUSED TO DWELL THERE <OBJ.> [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND THE LAND IT WAS SUBDUED <TO> BEFORE THEM The Remainder Divided 1Then the whole congregation of Israel assembled at Shiloh and set up the Tent of Meeting there. And though the land was subdued before them,
2AND THEY REMAINED AMONG [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHICH NOT THEY HAD DIVIDED <OBJ.> INHERITANCE THEIR SEVEN TRIBES 2there were still seven tribes of Israel who had not yet received their inheritance.
3AND HE SAID JOSHUA TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL UNTIL WHEN? [WILL] YOU [BE] SHOWING YOURSELF SLACK TO GO TO TAKE POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> THE LAND WHICH HE HAS GIVEN TO <THE> YOU YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS YOUR 3So Joshua said to the Israelites, “How long will you put off entering and possessing the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?
4PROVIDE FOR <THE> YOURSELVES THREE MEN TO THE TRIBE SO I MAY SEND THEM AND THEY MAY ARISE SO THEY MAY WALK IN THE LAND SO THEY MAY DESCRIBE IN WRITING <OBJ.> IT TO [THE] MOUTH OF INHERITANCE THEIR SO THEY MAY COME TO ME 4Appoint three men from each tribe, and I will send them out to survey the land and map it out according to the inheritance of each. Then they will return to me
5AND THEY WILL DIVIDE AMONG THEMSELVES <OBJ.> IT <INTO> SEVEN PORTIONS JUDAH IT WILL REMAIN ON TERRITORY ITS FROM [THE] SOUTH AND [THE] HOUSE OF JOSEPH THEY WILL REMAIN ON TERRITORY THEIR FROM [THE] NORTH 5and divide the land into seven portions. Judah shall remain in their territory in the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their territory in the north.
6AND YOU YOU WILL DESCRIBE IN WRITING <OBJ.> THE LAND SEVEN PORTIONS AND YOU WILL BRING [IT] TO ME HITHER AND I WILL THROW FOR <THE> YOU A LOT HERE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH GOD OUR 6When you have mapped out the seven portions of land and brought it to me, I will cast lots for you here in the presence of the LORD our God.
7FOR NOT A PORTION [WILL BELONG] TO THE LEVITES IN MIDST YOUR FOR [IS] [THE] PRIESTHOOD OF YAHWEH INHERITANCE ITS AND GAD AND REUBEN AND [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF <THE> MANASSEH THEY HAVE RECEIVED INHERITANCE THEIR FROM [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN EAST -WARD WHICH HE GAVE TO <THE> THEM MOSES [THE] SERVANT OF YAHWEH 7The Levites, however, have no portion among you, because their inheritance is the priesthood of the LORD. And Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received the inheritance that Moses the servant of the LORD gave them beyond the Jordan to the east.”
8AND THEY AROSE THE MEN AND THEY WENT AND HE COMMANDED JOSHUA <OBJ.> THOSE [WHO] WENT TO DESCRIBE IN WRITING <OBJ.> THE LAND <TO> SAYING GO AND WALK ABOUT IN THE LAND AND DESCRIBE IN WRITING <OBJ.> IT AND RETURN TO ME AND HERE I WILL THROW FOR <THE> YOU A LOT <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH IN SHILOH 8As the men got up to go out, Joshua commanded them to map out the land, saying, “Go and survey the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will cast lots for you here in Shiloh in the presence of the LORD.”
9AND THEY WENT THE MEN AND THEY PASSED IN THE LAND AND THEY DESCRIBED IN WRITING IT TO THE CITIES INTO SEVEN PORTIONS ON A SCROLL AND THEY CAME TO JOSHUA TO THE CAMP SHILOH 9So the men departed and went throughout the land, mapping it city by city into seven portions Then they returned with the document to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh.
10AND HE THREW FOR <THE> THEM JOSHUA A LOT IN SHILOH <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND HE APPORTIONED THERE JOSHUA <OBJ.> THE LAND TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL ACCORDING TO DIVISIONS THEIR 10And Joshua cast lots for them in the presence of the LORD at Shiloh, where he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their divisions.
11AND IT CAME UP [THE] LOT OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN TO CLANS THEIR AND IT WENT OUT [THE] TERRITORY OF LOT THEIR [WAS] BETWEEN [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JUDAH AND BETWEEN [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH Benjamin’s Inheritance 11The first lot came up for the clans of the tribe of Benjamin. Their allotted territory lay between the tribes of Judah and Joseph:
12AND IT WAS TO <THE> THEM THE BORDER OF [THE] SIDE OF NORTH -WARD FROM THE JORDAN AND IT GOES UP THE BORDER TO [THE] SLOPE OF JERICHO FROM [THE] NORTH AND IT GOES UP IN THE HILL COUNTRY WEST -WARD AND THEY ARE EXTREMITIES ITS [THE] WILDERNESS OF TOWARDS BETH AVEN 12On the north side their border began at the Jordan, went up past the northern slope of Jericho, headed west through the hill country, and came out at the wilderness of Beth-aven.
13AND IT PASSES ON FROM THERE THE BORDER LUZ TOWARDS TO [THE] SLOPE OF LUZ <TOWARDS> SOUTH -WARD THAT [IS] BETH- -EL AND IT GOES DOWN THE BORDER ATAROTH ADDAR ON THE MOUNTAIN WHICH [IS] FROM [THE] SOUTH OF BETH HORON LOWER 13From there the border crossed over to the southern slope of Luz (that is, Bethel) and went down to Ataroth-addar on the hill south of Lower Beth-horon.
14AND IT TURNS THE BORDER AND IT TURNS TO [THE] SIDE OF [THE] WEST SOUTH -WARD FROM THE MOUNTAIN WHICH [IS] ON [THE] FACE OF BETH HORON [THE] SOUTH TOWARDS AND THEY ARE EXTREMITIES ITS TO KIRIATH BAAL THAT [IS] KIRIATH JEARIM [THE] CITY OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JUDAH THIS [IS THE] SIDE OF [THE] WEST 14On the west side the border curved southward from the hill facing Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western side.
15AND [THE] SIDE OF [THE] SOUTH <TOWARDS> [IS] FROM [THE] END OF KIRIATH JEARIM AND IT GOES OUT THE BORDER WEST- -WARD AND IT GOES OUT TO [THE] SPRING OF [THE] WATERS OF NEPHTOAH 15On the south side the border began at the outskirts of Kiriath-jearim and extended westward to the spring at the Waters of Nephtoah.
16AND IT GOES DOWN THE BORDER TO [THE] END OF THE MOUNTAIN WHICH [IS] ON [THE] FACE [THE] VALLEY OF BEN HINNOM WHICH [IS] IN [THE] VALLEY OF [THE] REPHAITES NORTH -WARD AND IT GOES DOWN [THE] VALLEY OF [BEN] HINNOM TO [THE] SLOPE OF THE JEBUSITE[S] [THE] SOUTH TOWARDS AND IT GOES DOWN EN ROGEL 16Then it went down to the foot of the hill that faces the Valley of Ben-hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim and ran down the Valley of Hinnom toward the southern slope of the Jebusites and downward to En-rogel.
17AND IT TURNS FROM [THE] NORTH AND IT GOES OUT EN SHEMESH AND IT GOES OUT TO GELILOTH WHICH [IS] OPPOSITE [THE] ASCENT OF ADUMMIM AND IT GOES DOWN [THE] STONE OF BOHAN [THE] SON OF REUBEN 17From there it curved northward and proceeded to En-shemesh and on to Geliloth facing the Ascent of Adummim, and continued down to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.
18AND IT PASSES ON TO [THE] SLOPE OPPOSITE TO THE ARABAH NORTH -WARD AND IT GOES DOWN THE ARABAH TOWARDS 18Then it went on to the northern slope of Beth-arabah*NoteCloseLXX; Hebrew slope facing the Arabah and went down into the valley.
19AND IT PASSES ON THE BORDER TO [THE] SLOPE OF BETH HOGLAH NORTH -WARD AND THEY ARE [THE] EXTREMITIES OF THE TERRITORY TO [THE] BAY OF [THE] SEA OF <THE> SALT NORTH -WARD TO [THE] END OF THE JORDAN [THE] SOUTH TOWARDS THIS [IS THE] BORDER OF [THE] SOUTH 19The border continued to the northern slope of Beth-hoglah and came out at the northern bay of the Salt Sea,*NoteCloseThat is, the Dead Sea at the mouth of the Jordan. This was the southern border.
20AND THE JORDAN IT BORDERS <OBJ.> IT TO [THE] SIDE OF EAST -WARD THIS [WAS] [THE] INHERITANCE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN TO BORDERS ITS AROUND TO CLANS THEIR 20On the east side the border was the Jordan. These were the borders around the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin.
21AND THEY BELONGED THE CITIES TO [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN TO CLANS THEIR JERICHO AND BETH HOGLAH AND EMEK KEZIZ 21These were the cities of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin: Jericho, Beth-hoglah, Emek-keziz,
24AND KEPHAR <THE> AMMONAH AND <THE> OPHNI AND GEBA CITIES TWO [PLUS] TEN AND VILLAGES THEIR 24Chephar-ammoni, Ophni, and Geba— twelve cities, along with their villages.
28AND ZELAH HAELEPH AND THE JEBUSITE THAT [IS] JERUSALEM GIBEAH KIRIATH CITIES FOUR- TEEN AND VILLAGES THEIR THIS [WAS] [THE] INHERITANCE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN TO CLANS THEIR 28Zelah, Haeleph, Jebus*NoteCloseLXX, Syriac, and Vulgate; Hebrew the Jebusite (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah,*NoteCloseHebrew Gibeath and Kiriath-jearim*NoteCloseLXX; Hebrew Kiriath — fourteen cities, along with their villages. This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin.
