35NEITHER [IS IT] FOR SOIL NOR FOR MANURE FIT IS IT; OUT THEY CAST IT. THE [ONE] HAVING EARS TO HEAR HE SHOULD HEAR. 35It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile, and it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. ”
1WERE NOW TO HIM DRAWING NEAR ALL THE TAX COLLECTORS AND THE SINNERS TO HEAR HIM. The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:10–14) 1Now all the tax collectors and sinners were gathering around to listen to Jesus.
2AND WERE GRUMBLING THE BOTH PHARISEES AND THE SCRIBES SAYING THAT THIS [MAN] SINNERS RECEIVES AND HE EATS WITH THEM. 2So the Pharisees and scribes began to grumble: “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. ”
4WHAT MAN OF YOU HAVING A HUNDRED SHEEP AND HAVING LOST OF THEM ONE NOT LEAVES THE NINETY NINE IN THE OPEN FIELD AND GOES AFTER THE [ONE] HAVING BEEN LOST UNTIL HE MAY FIND IT? 4“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?
5AND HAVING FOUND [IT] HE LAYS [IT] ON THE SHOULDERS OF HIM REJOICING, 5And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders,
6AND HAVING COME TO THE HOUSE HE CALLS TOGETHER THE FRIENDS AND THE NEIGHBOURS SAYING TO THEM; DO REJOICE WITH ME, FOR I HAVE FOUND THE SHEEP OF MINE THE [ONE] HAVING BEEN LOST! 6comes home, and calls together his friends and neighbors to tell them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep! ’
7I SAY TO YOU THAT IN THE SAME WAY JOY IN <THE> HEAVEN THERE WILL BE OVER ONE SINNER REPENTING RATHER THAN OVER NINETY NINE RIGHTEOUS ONES WHO NO NEED HAVE OF REPENTANCE. 7I tell you that in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous ones who do not need to repent.
8OR WHAT WOMAN DRACHMAS HAVING TEN, IF SHE MAY LOSE DRACHMA ONE, SURELY SHE LIGHTS A LAMP AND SHE SWEEPS THE HOUSE AND SHE SEEKS CAREFULLY UNTIL IT SHE MAY FIND? The Parable of the Lost Coin 8Or what woman who has ten silver coins*NoteCloseGreek ten drachmas, each worth about a day’s wages and loses one of them does not light a lamp, sweep her house, and search carefully until she finds it?
9AND HAVING FOUND [IT] SHE CALLS TOGETHER THE FRIENDS AND <THE> NEIGHBOURS SAYING; DO REJOICE WITH ME, FOR I HAVE FOUND THE DRACHMA THAT I LOST. 9And when she finds it, she calls together her friends and neighbors to say, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost coin. ’
10THUS I SAY TO YOU, THERE IS JOY BEFORE THE ANGELS <THE> OF GOD OVER ONE SINNER REPENTING. 10In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents. ”
11HE SAID THEN; A MAN CERTAIN HAD TWO SONS. The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Deuteronomy 21:18–21) 11Then Jesus said, “There was a man who had two sons.
12AND SAID THE YOUNGER OF THEM TO THE FATHER; FATHER, DO GIVE TO ME WHAT IS DUE [TO ME] PORTION OF THE PROPERTY. <THE> THEN HE DIVIDED BETWEEN THEM THE PROPERTY. 12The younger son said to him, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate. ’ So he divided his property between them.
13AND AFTER NOT MANY DAYS HAVING GATHERED TOGETHER ALL [THINGS] THE YOUNGER SON WENT AWAY INTO A COUNTRY DISTANT AND THERE HE WASTED THE ESTATE OF HIM LIVING PRODIGALLY. 13After a few days, the younger son got everything together and journeyed to a distant country, where he squandered his wealth in wild living.
14WHEN WAS SPENDING HOWEVER HE EVERYTHING THERE AROSE A FAMINE SEVERE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY THAT, AND HE HIMSELF BEGAN TO BE IN NEED. 14After he had spent all he had, a severe famine swept through that country, and he began to be in need.
15AND HAVING GONE HE JOINED HIMSELF TO ONE OF THE CITIZENS THE COUNTRY OF THAT, AND HE SENT HIM INTO THE FIELDS OF HIM TO FEED PIGS. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed the pigs.
16AND HE WAS LONGING TO BE FED THE STOMACH OF HIM FROM THE PODS THAT WERE EATING THE PIGS, AND NO [ONE] WAS GIVING TO HIM. 16He longed to fill his belly with the pods the pigs were eating, but no one would give him a thing.
17TO HIMSELF HOWEVER HAVING COME HE WAS SAYING; HOW MANY HIRED SERVANTS OF THE FATHER OF MINE HAVE ABUNDANCE OF BREAD, I MYSELF HOWEVER WITH HUNGER HERE AM PERISHING! 17Finally he came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have plenty of food, but here I am, starving to death!
18HAVING RISEN UP I WILL GO TO THE FATHER OF MINE AND I WILL SAY TO HIM; FATHER, I HAVE SINNED AGAINST <THE> HEAVEN AND BEFORE YOU; 18I will get up and go back to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
19AND NO LONGER AM I WORTHY TO BE CALLED SON OF YOU. DO MAKE ME LIKE ONE OF THE SERVANTS OF YOU. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants. ”’
20AND HAVING RISEN UP HE WENT TO THE FATHER OF HIMSELF STILL NOW HE FAR BEING DISTANT HE SAW HIM THE FATHER OF HIM AND WAS MOVED WITH COMPASSION, AND HAVING RUN HE FELL UPON THE NECK OF HIM AND HE KISSED HIM. 20So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
21SAID THEN THE SON TO HIM: FATHER, I HAVE SINNED AGAINST <THE> HEAVEN AND BEFORE YOU; AND NO LONGER AM I WORTHY TO BE CALLED SON OF YOU DO MAKE ME AS ONE OF THE SERVANTS OF YOU. 21The son declared ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 22SAID THEN THE FATHER TO THE SERVANTS OF HIM; QUICKLY DO BRING OUT <THE> ROBE THE BEST AND DO CLOTHE HIM AND DO GIVE A RING FOR THE HAND OF HIM AND SANDALS FOR <THE> [HIS] FEET, 22But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
23AND DO BRING THE CALF <THE> FATTENED, DO KILL [IT], AND HAVING EATEN LET US BE MERRY, 23Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate.
24FOR THIS THE SON OF MINE DEAD WAS AND IS ALIVE AGAIN, AND HE WAS HAVING BEEN LOST AND IS FOUND. AND THEY BEGAN TO BE MERRY. 24For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found! ’ So they began to celebrate.
25WAS NOW THE SON OF HIM THE ELDER IN [THE] FIELD. AND WHILE COMING [UP] HE DREW NEAR TO THE HOUSE, HE HEARD MUSIC AND DANCING. 25Meanwhile the older son was in the field, and as he approached the house, he heard music and dancing.
26AND HAVING CALLED NEAR ONE OF THE SERVANTS OF HIM HE WAS INQUIRING WHAT MAYBE WOULD BE THESE THINGS. 26So he called one of the servants and asked what was going on.
27<THE> AND HE SAID TO HIM THAT THE BROTHER OF YOU IS COME, AND HAS KILLED THE FATHER OF YOU THE CALF <THE> FATTENED, BECAUSE IN GOOD HEALTH HIM HE HAS RECEIVED. 27‘Your brother has returned, ’ he said ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has him back safe and sound. ’
28HE WAS ANGRY HOWEVER AND NOT HE WAS WILLING TO GO IN. <THE> AND THE FATHER OF HIM HAVING GONE HE WAS BEGGING HIM. 28The older son became angry and refused to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.
29<THE> AND ANSWERING HE SAID TO THE [THE] FATHER OF HIM; BEHOLD SO MANY YEARS I SERVE YOU AND NEVER A COMMANDMENT OF YOU I DISOBEYED, AND TO ME MYSELF NEVER DID YOU GIVE A YOUNG GOAT THAT WITH THE FRIENDS OF MINE I MAY MAKE MERRY. 29But he answered his father, ‘Look, all these years I have served you and never disobeyed a commandment of yours. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.
30WHEN HOWEVER THE SON OF YOU THIS THE [ONE] HAVING DEVOURED YOUR <THE> LIVING WITH <THE> PROSTITUTES CAME, YOU HAVE KILLED FOR HIM THE FATTENED <THE> CALF. 30But when this son of yours returns from squandering your wealth with prostitutes, you kill the fattened calf for him! ’
31<THE> AND HE SAID TO HIM; SON, YOU YOURSELF ALWAYS WITH ME ARE, AND ALL THAT [IS] MINE YOURS IS. 31‘Son, you are always with me, ’ the father said ‘and all that is mine is yours.
32TO MAKE MERRY HOWEVER AND TO REJOICE IT WAS FITTING, BECAUSE THE BROTHER OF YOU THIS DEAD WAS AND IS ALIVE, AND HAVING BEEN LOST WAS AND IS FOUND. 32But it was fitting to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. ’”
