35BEHOLD IS LEFT TO YOU THE HOUSE OF YOU DESOLATE. AMEN I SAY NOW TO YOU THAT: CERTAINLY NOT SHALL YOU SEE ME UNTIL WHEN [THE TIME] WILL COME WHEN YOU MAY SAY; BLESSED [IS] THE [ONE] COMING IN [THE] NAME OF [THE] LORD.’ 35Look, your house is left to you desolate. 1AND IT CAME TO PASS ON THE GOING OF HIM INTO A HOUSE OF ONE OF THE RULERS OF THE PHARISEES ON A SABBATH TO EAT BREAD AND THEY THEMSELVES WERE WATCHING HIM. Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy 1One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat in the home of a leading Pharisee, and those in attendance were watching Him closely.
2AND BEHOLD A MAN CERTAIN THERE WAS WITH DROPSY BEFORE HIM. 2Right there before Him was a man with dropsy.
3AND ANSWERING <THE> JESUS SPOKE TO THE LAWYERS AND TO [THE] PHARISEES SAYING; IF IS IT LAWFUL ON THE SABBATH TO HEAL OR NOT? 3So Jesus asked the experts in the law and the Pharisees “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not? ”
4<THE> BUT THEY WERE SILENT. AND HAVING TAKEN HOLD [OF HIM] HE HEALED HIM AND LET [HIM] GO. 4But they remained silent. Then Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him on his way.
5AND ANSWERING TO THEM HE SAID; WHICH OF YOU A SON OR AN OX INTO A PIT WILL COLLAPSE, ALSO SURELY IMMEDIATELY HE WILL PULL UP HIM ON <THE> DAY THE SABBATH? 5And He asked them, “Which of you whose son*NoteCloseTR donkey or ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath day will not immediately pull him out? ”
6AND NOT THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLY TO HIM TO THESE THINGS. 6And they were unable to answer these questions.
7HE WAS SPEAKING THEN TO THOSE INVITED A PARABLE REMARKING HOW THE FIRST PLACES THEY WERE CHOOSING OUT, SAYING TO THEM; The Parable of the Guests 7When Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, He told them a parable:
8WHEN YOU MAY BE INVITED BY ANYONE TO WEDDING FEASTS, NOT MAY RECLINE IN THE FIRST PLACE, OTHERWISE [ONE] MORE HONORABLE THAN YOU MAY HAVE BEEN INVITED BY HIM, 8“When you are invited to a wedding banquet, do not sit in the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited.
9AND HAVING COME THE [ONE] YOU AND HIM HAVING INVITED HE WILL SAY TO YOU; DO GIVE TO THIS ONE [YOUR] PLACE. AND THEN YOU WILL BEGIN WITH SHAME THE LAST PLACE TO TAKE. 9Then the host who invited both of you will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your seat. ’ And in humiliation, you will have to take the last place.
10BUT WHEN YOU MAY BE INVITED, HAVING GONE DO RECLINE IN THE LAST PLACE, SO THAT WHEN MAY COME THE [ONE] HAVING INVITED YOU, HE WILL SAY TO YOU; FRIEND, DO COME UP HIGHER. THEN WILL BE TO YOU GLORY BEFORE ALL THOSE RECLINING [WITH] YOU. 10But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place, so that your host will come and tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’*NoteCloseSee Proverbs 25:7. Then you will be honored in front of everyone at the table with you.
11FOR EVERYONE WHO IS EXALTING HIMSELF WILL BE HUMBLED, AND THE [ONE] HUMBLING HIMSELF WILL BE EXALTED. 11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted. ”
12HE WAS SAYING THEN ALSO TO THE [ONE] HAVING INVITED HIM; WHEN YOU MAY MAKE A DINNER OR A SUPPER, NOT DO CALL THE FRIENDS OF YOU NOR [CALL] THE BROTHERS OF YOU NOR [CALL] THE RELATIVES OF YOU NOR [CALL] NEIGHBOURS RICH OTHERWISE ALSO THEY THEMSELVES MAY INVITE IN RETURN YOU AND IT MAY BECOME RECOMPENSE TO YOU. 12Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbors. Otherwise they may invite you in return, and you will be repaid.
13BUT WHEN A FEAST YOU MAY MAKE DO CALL [THE] POOR, [THE] CRIPPLED, [THE] LAME, [THE] BLIND. 13But when you host a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind,
14AND BLESSED YOU WILL BE, BECAUSE NOTHING THEY HAVE TO REPAY YOU; IT WILL BE RECOMPENSED FOR TO YOU IN THE RESURRECTION OF THE RIGHTEOUS. 14and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. ”
15HAVING HEARD THEN ONE OF THOSE RECLINING WITH [HIM] THESE THINGS HE SAID TO HIM; BLESSED [IS HE] WHO WILL EAT BREAD IN THE KINGDOM <THE> OF GOD. The Parable of the Banquet (Matthew 22:1–14) 15When one of those reclining with Him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is everyone who will eat at the feast*NoteCloseLiterally who will eat bread in the kingdom of God. ”
16<THE> BUT HE SAID TO HIM; A MAN CERTAIN WAS PREPARING A SUPPER GREAT AND INVITED MANY; 16But Jesus replied “A certain man prepared a great banquet and invited many guests.
17AND HE SENT THE SERVANT OF HIM AT THE HOUR OF THE SUPPER TO SAY TO THOSE INVITED; DO COME, FOR NOW READY [IT] IS ALL THINGS. 17When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready. ’
18AND BEGAN WITH ONE [VOICE] ALL TO EXCUSE THEMSELVES. THE FIRST SAID TO HIM; A FIELD I HAVE BOUGHT AND I HAVE NEED GOING OUT AND TO SEE IT; I BEG OF YOU, DO HOLD ME EXCUSED. 18But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first one said ‘I have bought a field, and I need to go see it. Please excuse me. ’
19AND ANOTHER SAID; YOKE OF OXEN I HAVE BOUGHT FIVE AND I AM GOING TO PROVE THEM; I BEG OF YOU DO HOLD ME EXCUSED. 19Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out. Please excuse me. ’
20AND ANOTHER SAID; A WIFE I HAVE MARRIED AND BECAUSE OF THIS NOT I AM ABLE TO COME. 20Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, so I cannot come. ’
21AND HAVING COME THE SERVANT THAT REPORTED TO THE MASTER OF HIM THESE THINGS. THEN HAVING BECOME ANGRY THE MASTER OF THE HOUSE SAID TO THE SERVANT OF HIM; DO GO OUT SOON INTO THE STREETS AND LANES OF THE CITY, AND THE POOR AND CRIPPLED AND BLIND AND LAME DO BRING IN HERE. 21The servant returned and reported all this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame. ’
22AND SAID THE SERVANT; SIR, IT HAS BEEN DONE AS YOU DID COMMAND, AND STILL ROOM THERE IS. 22‘Sir, ’ the servant replied, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there is still room. ’
23AND SAID THE MASTER TO THE SERVANT; DO GO OUT INTO THE HIGHWAYS AND HEDGES AND DO COMPEL [THEM] TO COME IN SO THAT MAY BE FILLED OF MINE THE HOUSE. 23So the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.
24I SAY FOR TO YOU THAT NOT [ONE] OF THE MEN OF THOSE WHICH INVITED WILL TASTE MY <THE> SUPPER MANY FOR ARE CALLED FEW BUT CHOSEN. 24For I tell you not one of those men who were invited will taste my banquet. ’”
25WERE GOING WITH THEN HIM CROWDS GREAT. AND HAVING TURNED HE SAID TO THEM; The Cost of Discipleship (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; John 6:59–66) 25Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and He turned and said to them,
26IF ANYONE COMES TO ME AND NOT HE HATES THE FATHER OF HIMSELF AND THE MOTHER AND THE WIFE AND THE CHILDREN AND THE BROTHERS AND THE SISTERS YES AND EVEN THE LIFE HIS OWN NOT HE IS ABLE TO BE MY DISCIPLE. 26“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters— yes, even his own life— he cannot be My disciple.
27AND WHOEVER NOT CARRIES THE CROSS OF HIMSELF AND COMES AFTER ME, NOT IS ABLE TO BE MY DISCIPLE. 27And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.
28WHICH FOR OF YOU WHO IS DESIRING A TOWER TO BUILD NOT FIRST HE HAVING SAT DOWN HE COUNTS THE COST WHETHER HE HAS <THE> FOR [ITS] COMPLETION? 28Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?
29THUS OTHERWISE [WHEN] LAYING OF IT A FOUNDATION AND NOT BEING ABLE TO FINISH ALL THOSE SEEING [IT] MAY BEGIN HIM TO MOCK 29Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
30SAYING THAT THIS <THE> MAN BEGAN TO BUILD AND NOT HE WAS ABLE TO FINISH. 30saying ‘This man could not finish what he started to build. ’
31OR WHAT KING PROCEEDING WITH ANOTHER KING TO ENGAGE IN WAR NOT HAVING SAT DOWN FIRST WILL TAKE COUNSEL WHETHER ABLE HE IS WITH TEN THOUSAND TO MEET THE [ONE] WITH TWENTY THOUSAND COMING AGAINST HIM? 31Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
32LEST THEN EXCEPT INDEED STILL OF HIM FAR OFF BEING AN EMBASSY HAVING SENT HE ASKS <THE> FOR PEACE. 32And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.
33SO THEREFORE EVERY ONE OF YOU WHO NOT DOES GIVE UP ALL <THE> HIS OWN POSSESSIONS, NOT IS ABLE TO BE MY DISCIPLE. 33In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.
34GOOD [IS] THEREFORE THE SALT; IF HOWEVER EVEN THE SALT SHALL BECOME TASTELESS, WITH WHAT WILL IT BE SEASONED? Good Salt (Matthew 5:13–16; Mark 9:49–50) 34Salt is good, but if the salt loses its savor, with what will it be seasoned?
35NEITHER [IS IT] FOR SOIL NOR FOR MANURE FIT IS IT; OUT THEY CAST IT. THE [ONE] HAVING EARS TO HEAR HE SHOULD HEAR. 35It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile, and it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. ”
