32TO MAKE MERRY HOWEVER AND TO REJOICE IT WAS FITTING, BECAUSE THE BROTHER OF YOU THIS DEAD WAS AND IS ALIVE, AND HAVING BEEN LOST WAS AND IS FOUND. 32But it was fitting to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. ’”
1HE WAS SAYING NOW ALSO TO THE DISCIPLES OF HIM: A MAN CERTAIN THERE WAS RICH WHO HAD A MANAGER, AND HE WAS ACCUSED UNTO HIM AS WASTING THE POSSESSIONS OF HIM. The Parable of the Shrewd Manager 1Jesus also said to His disciples, “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.
2AND HAVING CALLED HIM HE SAID TO HIM; WHAT [IS] THIS I HEAR CONCERNING YOU? DO GIVE THE ACCOUNT OF THE STEWARDSHIP OF YOU; NOT FOR YOU ARE ABLE ANY LONGER TO MANAGE. 2So he called him in to ask ‘What is this I hear about you? Turn in an account of your management, for you cannot be manager any longer. ’
3SAID THEN WITHIN HIMSELF THE MANAGER; WHAT SHALL I DO, FOR THE MASTER OF ME IS TAKING AWAY THE MANAGEMENT FROM ME? TO DIG NOT I AM ABLE, TO BEG I AM ASHAMED. 3The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, now that my master is taking away my position? I am too weak to dig and too ashamed to beg.
4I KNOW WHAT I MAY DO SO THAT WHEN I MAY HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE MANAGEMENT THEY MAY RECEIVE ME INTO THE HOMES OF THEM. 4I know what I will do so that after my removal from management, people will welcome me into their homes. ’
5AND HAVING CALLED TO [HIM] ONE EACH OF THE DEBTORS OF THE MASTER HIS OWN HE WAS SAYING TO THE FIRST; HOW MUCH OWE YOU TO THE MASTER OF ME? 5And he called in each one of his master’s debtors. ‘How much do you owe my master? ’ he asked the first.
6<THE> THEN HE SAID; A HUNDRED BATHS OF OIL. <THE> THEN HE SAID TO HIM; DO TAKE YOUR THE BILLS AND HAVING SAT DOWN SOON DO WRITE FIFTY. 6‘A hundred measures of olive oil,’*NoteCloseGreek ‘A hundred baths of oil’; that is, approximately 870 gallons or 3,300 liters he answered. ‘Take your bill, ’ said the manager ‘sit down quickly, and write fifty. ’
7THEN TO ANOTHER HE SAID; YOU YOURSELF NOW HOW MUCH OWE? <THE> AND HE SAID; A HUNDRED CORS OF WHEAT. AND HE SAYS TO HIM; DO TAKE YOUR <THE> BILLS AND DO WRITE EIGHTY. 7Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ ‘A hundred measures of wheat,’*NoteCloseGreek ‘A hundred cors of wheat’; that is, approximately 1,000 bushels or 35,000 liters (probably about 30 tons or 27 metric tons of wheat) he replied. ‘Take your bill and write eighty, ’ he told him.
8AND PRAISED THE MASTER THE MANAGER <THE> UNRIGHTEOUS BECAUSE SHREWDLY HE HAD ACTED, FOR THE SONS OF THE AGE THIS MORE SHREWD THAN THE SONS OF THE LIGHT IN THE GENERATION <THE> THEIR OWN ARE. 8The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the sons of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the sons of light.
9AND I MYSELF TO YOU SAY; FOR YOURSELVES DO MAKE FRIENDS BY THE WEALTH <THE> OF UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, THAT WHEN IT MAY FAIL THEY MAY RECEIVE YOU INTO THE ETERNAL DWELLINGS. 9I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends for yourselves so that when it is gone, they will welcome you into eternal dwellings.
10THE [ONE] FAITHFUL WITH VERY LITTLE ALSO WITH MUCH FAITHFUL IS, AND THE [ONE] WITH VERY LITTLE UNRIGHTEOUS ALSO WITH MUCH UNRIGHTEOUS IS. 10Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.
11IF THEREFORE IN THE UNRIGHTEOUS WEALTH FAITHFUL NOT YOU HAVE BEEN, THE TRUE [RICHES] WHO TO YOU WILL ENTRUST? 11So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches?
12AND IF IN THAT WHICH [IS] OF ANOTHER FAITHFUL NOT YOU HAVE BEEN, THAT WHICH [IS] YOURS WHO TO YOU WILL GIVE 12And if you have not been faithful with the belongings of another, who will give you belongings of your own?
13NO SERVANT IS ABLE TO TWO MASTERS TO SERVE; EITHER FOR THE ONE HE WILL HATE AND THE OTHER HE WILL LOVE, OR TO ONE HE WILL BE DEVOTED AND THE OTHER HE WILL DESPISE. NOT YOU ARE ABLE GOD TO SERVE AND MONEY. 13No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. ”
14WERE LISTENING TO NOW THESE THINGS ALL AND THE PHARISEES LOVERS OF MONEY BEING AND THEY WERE RIDICULING HIM. The Law and the Prophets 14The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all of this and were scoffing at Jesus.
15AND HE SAID TO THEM; YOU YOURSELVES ARE THOSE JUSTIFYING THEMSELVES BEFORE <THE> MEN, <THE> BUT GOD KNOWS THE HEARTS OF YOU FOR THAT WHICH AMONG MEN [IS] EXALTED AN ABOMINATION BEFORE <THE> GOD IS. 15So He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is prized among men is detestable before God.
16THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS [WERE] UNTIL JOHN; FROM THAT TIME THE KINGDOM <THE> OF GOD IS EVANGELISED [ABOUT], AND EVERYONE INTO IT FORCES HIS WAY. 16The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the gospel of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.*NoteCloseOr everyone is urged to enter into it
17EASIER FOR HOWEVER IT IS THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH TO PASS AWAY THAN OF THE LAW ONE STROKE OF A PEN TO FAIL. 17But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a single stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
18EVERYONE WHO IS PUTTING AWAY THE WIFE OF HIM AND MARRYING ANOTHER COMMITS ADULTERY, AND EVERYONE WHO SEPARATED HER FROM A HUSBAND MARRYING COMMITS ADULTERY. 18Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
19A MAN NOW CERTAIN THERE WAS RICH AND HE WAS CLOTHED IN PURPLE AND FINE LINEN MAKING GOOD CHEER EVERY DAY IN SPLENDOR. The Rich Man and Lazarus (John 5:39–47) 19Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous splendor.
20A POOR MAN NOW CERTAIN WAS NAMED LAZARUS WHO HAD BEEN LAID AT THE GATE OF HIM FULL OF SORES 20And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores
21AND DESIRING TO BE FED FROM <THE> CRUMBS THAT FALLING FROM THE TABLE OF THE RICH MAN; BUT EVEN THE DOGS COMING WERE LICKING THE SORES OF HIM. 21and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22IT CAME TO PASS THAT THEN TO DIE THE POOR MAN AND TO BE CARRIED AWAY HE BY THE ANGELS INTO THE BOSOM <THE> OF ABRAHAM; DIED THEN ALSO THE RICH MAN AND WAS BURIED. 22One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.*NoteCloseGreek into Abraham’s bosom; similarly in verse 23 And the rich man also died and was buried.
23AND IN <THE> HADES HAVING LIFTED UP THE EYES OF HIM, BEING IN TORMENT HE SEES <THE> ABRAHAM FROM AFAR AND LAZARUS IN THE BOSOM OF HIM. 23In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.
24AND HE HIMSELF HAVING CRIED OUT SAID; FATHER ABRAHAM, DO HAVE MERCY ON ME AND DO SEND LAZARUS THAT HE MAY DIP THE TIP OF THE FINGER OF HIM IN WATER AND MAY COOL THE TONGUE OF MINE, FOR I AM SUFFERING IN <THE> FLAME THIS. 24So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire. ’
25SAID THEN ABRAHAM; CHILD, DO REMEMBER THAT YOU DID FULLY RECEIVE YOU YOURSELF THE [THINGS] GOOD OF YOU IN THE LIFETIME OF YOU, AND LAZARUS LIKEWISE THE [THINGS] HARMFUL. NOW HOWEVER HERE HE IS COMFORTED, YOU YOURSELF NOW ARE SUFFERING. 25But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.
26AND BESIDES ALL THESE THINGS BETWEEN US AND YOU A CHASM GREAT HAS BEEN FIXED SO THAT THOSE DESIRING TO PASS FROM HERE TO YOU NOT MAY BE ABLE NOR THOSE FROM THERE TO US THEY SHALL PASS. 26And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can anyone cross from there to us. ’
27HE SAID THEN; I IMPLORE YOU THEN FATHER, THAT YOU MAY SEND HIM TO THE HOUSE OF THE FATHER OF MINE — 27‘Then I beg you, father, ’ he said, ‘send Lazarus to my father’s house,
28I HAVE FOR FIVE BROTHERS — SO THAT HE MAY WARN TO THEM THAT NOT ALSO THEY THEMSELVES MAY COME TO <THE> PLACE THIS <THE> OF TORMENT. 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also end up in this place of torment. ’
29SAYS HOWEVER TO HIM ABRAHAM; THEY HAVE MOSES AND THE PROPHETS; THEY SHOULD LISTEN TO THEM. 29But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let your brothers listen to them. ’
30<THE> AND HE SAID; NO, FATHER ABRAHAM, BUT IF ONE FROM [THE] DEAD SHALL GO TO THEM, THEY WILL REPENT. 30‘No, father Abraham, ’ he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead, they will repent. ’
31HE SAID HOWEVER TO HIM; IF TO MOSES AND THE PROPHETS NOT THEY LISTEN, NOT EVEN IF ONE OUT FROM [THE] DEAD SHALL RISE WILL THEY BE PERSUADED. 31Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead. ’”
