2DURING [THE] HIGH PRIESTHOOD OF ANNAS AND CAIAPHAS, CAME [THE] DECLARATION OF GOD UPON JOHN THE <THE> OF ZECHARIAH SON IN THE WILDERNESS. 2during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
3AND HE WENT INTO ALL THE SURROUNDING REGION OF THE JORDAN PROCLAIMING A BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE FOR FORGIVENESS OF SINS 3He went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,
4AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN IN [THE] BOOK OF [THE] WORDS OF ISAIAH THE PROPHET SAYING: [THE] VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS DO PREPARE THE WAY OF [THE] LORD, STRAIGHT DO MAKE THE PATHS OF HIM. 4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.
5EVERY VALLEY WILL BE FILLED AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE MADE LOW; AND WILL BECOME THE CROOKED INTO STRAIGHT AND THE ROUGH INTO WAYS SMOOTH; 5Every valley shall be filled in, and every mountain and hill made low. The crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth.

7HE WAS SAYING THEREFORE TO THE COMING OUT CROWDS TO BE BAPTIZED BY HIM; OFFSPRING OF VIPERS, WHO FOREWARNED YOU TO FLEE FROM THE SOON COMING WRATH? 7Then John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8DO PRODUCE THEREFORE FRUITS WORTHY <THE> OF REPENTANCE; AND NOT MAY BEGIN TO SAY IN YOURSELVES; [AS] FATHER WE HAVE <THE> ABRAHAM. I SAY FOR TO YOU THAT IS ABLE <THE> GOD FROM <THE> STONES THESE TO RAISE UP CHILDREN <THE> TO ABRAHAM. 8Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father. ’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
9ALREADY NOW ALSO THE AX TO THE ROOT OF THE TREES IS APPLIED; EVERY THEREFORE TREE NOT PRODUCING FRUIT GOOD IS CUT DOWN AND INTO [THE] FIRE IS THROWN. 9The axe lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. ”
10AND WERE ASKING HIM THE CROWDS SAYING; WHAT THEN SHALL WE DO? 10The crowds asked him “What then should we do? ”
11ANSWERING NOW HE WAS SAYING TO THEM; THE [ONE] HAVING TWO TUNICS HE SHOULD IMPART TO THE [ONE] NONE HAVING AND THE [ONE] HAVING FOOD LIKEWISE HE SHOULD DO. 11John replied, “Whoever has two tunics should share with him who has none, and whoever has food should do the same. ”
12CAME THEN ALSO TAX COLLECTORS TO BE BAPTIZED AND THEY SAID TO HIM; TEACHER, WHAT SHALL WE DO? 12Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher, ” they asked “what should we do? ”
13<THE> AND HE SAID TO THEM; NOTHING MORE BEYOND THAT APPOINTED TO YOU DO COLLECT. 13“Collect no more than you are authorized, ” he answered.
14WERE ASKING THEN HIM ALSO THOSE BEING SOLDIERS SAYING; WHAT MAY DO ALSO WE OURSELVES AND HE SAID TO TO THEM; NO ONE MAY EXTORT NOR MAY ACCUSE FALSELY AND DO BE CONTENT WITH THE WAGES OF YOU. 14Then some soldiers asked him “And what should we do? ” “Do not take money by force or false accusation, ” he said Be content with your wages. ”
15WHEN WERE EXPECTING THEN THE PEOPLE AND WONDERING ALL IN THE HEARTS OF THEM CONCERNING <THE> JOHN, WHETHER HE HIMSELF WOULD BE THE CHRIST, 15The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ.
16ANSWERED SAYING [TO] ALL <THE> JOHN: I MYSELF INDEED WITH WATER BAPTIZE YOU; COMES HOWEVER THE [ONE] MIGHTIER THAN I, OF WHOM NOT I AM WORTHY TO UNTIE THE STRAP OF THE SANDALS OF HIM. HE HIMSELF YOU WILL BAPTIZE WITH [THE] SPIRIT HOLY AND WITH FIRE, 16John answered all of them: “I baptize you with water,*NoteCloseOr in water but One more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.*NoteCloseCited in Acts 13:25 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.*NoteCloseOr in the Holy Spirit and in fire
17OF WHOM THE WINNOWING FORK [IS] IN THE HAND OF HIM AND TO SCOUR THE THRESHING FLOOR OF HIM AND TO GATHER THE WHEAT INTO THE BARN OF HIM. <THE> BUT THE CHAFF HE WILL BURN UP WITH FIRE UNQUENCHABLE. 17His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. ”
18MANY INDEED THEREFORE OTHER THINGS EXHORTING HE WAS EVANGELISING THE PEOPLE. 18With these and many other exhortations, John proclaimed the good news to the people.
19<THE> AND HEROD THE TETRARCH BEING REPROVED BY HIM CONCERNING HERODIAS THE WIFE OF PHILIP OF THE BROTHER OF HIM AND CONCERNING ALL THAT DID [THE] EVILS <THE> HEROD, 19But when he rebuked Herod the tetrarch regarding his brother’s wife Herodias and all the evils he had done,
20ADDED YET THIS TO ALL: ALSO HE LOCKED UP <THE> JOHN IN <THE> PRISON. 20Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.
21IT CAME TO PASS NOW IN <THE> BAPTIZING ALL THE PEOPLE AND WHEN JESUS HAVING BEEN BAPTIZED AND HAVING PRAYED [WAS] OPENING THE HEAVEN The Baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13–17; Mark 1:9–11; John 1:29–34) 21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too.
