1 AND HE WENT OUT FROM THERE AND CAME INTO THE HOMETOWN OF HIM, AND FOLLOW HIM THE DISCIPLES OF HIM.
The Rejection at Nazareth
(Matthew 13:53–58 ; Luke 4:16–30 )
1 Jesus went on from there and came to His hometown, accompanied by His disciples.
2 AND WHEN WAS BECOMING [THE] SABBATH HE BEGAN TO TEACH IN THE SYNAGOGUE; AND <THE> MANY HEARING WERE ASTONISHED SAYING; FROM WHERE TO THIS [MAN] THESE THINGS, AND WHAT [IS] THE WISDOM WHICH HAVING BEEN GIVEN TO HIM FOR EVEN THE MIRACLES SUCH THROUGH THE HANDS OF HIM ARE DONE?
2 When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these ideas? ” they asked. What is this wisdom He has been given? And how can He perform such miracles?
3 SURELY THIS IS THE CARPENTER, THE SON <THE> OF MARY AND BROTHER NOW OF JAMES AND OF JOSES AND OF JUDAS AND OF SIMON? AND SURELY ARE THE SISTERS OF HIM HERE WITH US? AND THEY WERE OFFENDED BY HIM.
3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t His sisters here with us as well? ” And they took offense at Him.
4 AND WAS SAYING NOW TO THEM <THE> JESUS THAT NOT IS A PROPHET WITHOUT HONOR ONLY EXCEPT IN THE HOMETOWN OF HIM AND AMONG THE RELATIVES OF HIM AND IN THE HOUSEHOLD OF HIM.
4 Then Jesus said to them,
“Only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own household is a prophet without honor. ”
5 AND NOT HE WAS ABLE THERE TO DO NOT ANY WORK OF POWER ONLY EXCEPT ON A FEW SICK HAVING LAID THE HANDS HE HEALED.
5 So He could not perform any miracles there, except to lay His hands on a few of the sick and heal them.
6 AND HE WAS MARVELING BECAUSE OF THE UNBELIEF OF THEM. AND HE WAS GOING THE VILLAGES AROUND TEACHING.
6 And He was amazed at their unbelief.
And He went around from village to village, teaching the people.
7 AND HE CALLS NEAR THE TWELVE AND HE BEGAN THEM TO SEND FORTH TWO [BY] TWO AND HE WAS GAVING TO THEM AUTHORITY OVER THE SPIRITS <THE> UNCLEAN
The Ministry of the Twelve
(Matthew 10:5–15 ; Luke 9:1–6 )
7 Then Jesus called the Twelve to Him and began to send them out two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits.
8 AND HE INSTRUCTED TO THEM THAT NOTHING THEY MAY TAKE FOR [THE] JOURNEY ONLY EXCEPT A STAFF ALONE, NO BREAD NOR BAG NOR IN THE BELT MONEY,
8 He instructed them to take nothing but a staff for the journey— no bread, no bag, no money in their belts—
9 BUT HAVING PUT ON YOURSELVES SANDALS, AND NOT MAY PUT ON TWO TUNICS.
9 and to wear sandals, but not a second tunic.
10 AND HE WAS SAYING TO THEM; WHEREVER MAYBE YOU SHALL ENTER INTO A HOUSE, THERE DO REMAIN UNTIL MAYBE YOU MAY GO OUT FROM THERE.
10 And He told them,
“When you enter a house, stay there until you leave that area.
11 AND WHATEVER MAYBE PLACE NOT HE MAY RECEIVE YOU NOR MAY HEAR YOU, DEPARTING FROM THERE DO SHAKE OFF THE DUST WHICH [IS] UNDER THE FEET OF YOU FOR A TESTIMONY AGAINST THEM. AMEN I SAY TO YOU MORE TOLERABLE WILL BE FOR SODOM OR FOR GOMORRAH IN DAY OF JUDGMENT THAN FOR THE FOR CITY THAT [ONE].
11 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that place, as a testimony against them.”
12 AND HAVING GONE OUT THEY PROCLAIMED THAT THEY MAY REPENT,
12 So they set out and preached that the people should repent.
13 AND DEMONS MANY THEY WERE CASTING OUT AND WERE ANOINTING WITH OIL MANY SICK AND WERE HEALING [THEM].
13 They also drove out many demons and healed many of the sick, anointing them with oil.
14 AND HEARD <THE> KING HEROD; WELL KNOWN FOR BECAME THE NAME OF HIM. AND THEY WERE SAYING THAT JOHN THE [ONE] BAPTIZING HE HAS BEEN RAISED OUT FROM [THE] DEAD AND BECAUSE OF THIS OPERATE THE MIRACULOUS POWERS IN HIM.
The Beheading of John
(Matthew 14:1–12 ; Luke 9:7–9 )
14 Now King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known, and people were saying “John the Baptist has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him. ”
15 OTHERS HOWEVER WERE SAYING THAT ELIJAH HE IS; OTHERS NOW WERE SAYING THAT A PROPHET IS OR LIKE ONE OF THE PROPHETS.
15 Others were saying, “He is Elijah, ” and still others “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old. ”
16 HAVING HEARD NOW <THE> HEROD WAS SAYING THAT: WHOM I MYSELF BEHEADED JOHN — HE [IT] IS HE HIMSELF IS RISEN FROM DEAD.
16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead! ”
17 HIMSELF FOR <THE> HEROD HAVING SENT HE SEIZED <THE> JOHN AND BOUND HIM IN <THE> PRISON ON ACCOUNT OF HERODIAS THE WIFE OF PHILIP THE BROTHER OF HIM BECAUSE HER HE HAD MARRIED;
17 For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.
18 WERE SAYING FOR <THE> JOHN <THE> TO HEROD THAT NOT IT IS LAWFUL FOR YOU TO HAVE THE WIFE OF THE BROTHER OF YOU.
18 For John had been telling Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife! ”
19 <THE> AND HERODIAS WAS HOLDING IT AGAINST HIM AND HE WAS WISHING HIM TO KILL AND NOT HE WAS ABLE;
19 So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she had been unable,
20 <THE> FOR HEROD WAS AFRAID OF <THE> JOHN KNOWING HIM [TO BE] A MAN RIGHTEOUS AND HOLY AND HE WAS KEEPING SAFE HIM. AND WHEN HAVING HEARD HIM MUCH HE WAS PERPLEXED AND GLADLY HIM WAS HEARING.
20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man. When he heard John’s words, he was greatly perplexed; yet he listened to him gladly.
21 AND WHEN WAS COMING [A] DAY OPPORTUNE WHEN HEROD ON THE BIRTHDAY OF HIM A BANQUET MADE FOR THE GREAT MEN OF HIM AND FOR THE CHIEF CAPTAINS AND FOR THE LEADING [MEN] <THE> OF GALILEE
21 On Herod’s birthday, her opportunity arose. Herod held a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.
22 AND WHEN WAS ENTERING THE DAUGHTER OF HIM <THE> HERODIAS AND WHEN HAVING DANCED AND SHE PLEASED <THE> HEROD AND THOSE RECLINING WITH [HIM] SAID <THE> NOW THE KING TO THE GIRL; DO ASK ME WHATEVER IF YOU SHALL WISH, AND I WILL GIVE TO YOU.
22 When the daughter of Herodias came and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests, and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you. ”
23 AND HE SWORE TO HER GREATLY WHATEVER THING IF ME YOU SHALL ASK I WILL GIVE YOU UNTIL HALF OF THE KINGDOM OF MINE.
23 And he swore to her “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom! ”
24 AND <THE> NOW HAVING GONE OUT SHE SAID TO THE MOTHER OF HER; WHAT SHALL I ASK FOR MYSELF? <THE> AND SHE SAID; THE HEAD OF JOHN THE [ONE] BAPTIZING.
24 Then she went out and asked her mother, “What should I request? ”
And her mother answered, “The head of John the Baptist. ”
25 AND HAVING ENTERED IMMEDIATELY WITH HASTE TO THE KING SHE ASKED SAYING; I DESIRE THAT AT ONCE MAY YOU GIVE TO ME ON A PLATTER THE HEAD OF JOHN THE BAPTIST.
25 At once the girl hurried back to the king with her request: “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately. ”
26 AND ENCOMPASSINGLY SORROWFUL HAVING BEEN MADE THE KING ON ACCOUNT OF THE OATHS AND THOSE RECLINING WITH [HIM] NOT WAS HE WILLING TO REFUSE HER.
26 The king was consumed with sorrow, but because of his oaths and his guests, he did not want to refuse her.
27 AND IMMEDIATELY HAVING SENT THE KING AN EXECUTIONER HE COMMANDED TO BE BROUGHT THE HEAD OF HIM. <THE> AND HAVING GONE HE BEHEADED HIM IN THE PRISON
27 So without delay, the king commanded that John’s head be brought in. He sent an executioner, who went and beheaded him in the prison.
28 AND BROUGHT THE HEAD OF HIM ON A PLATTER AND GAVE IT TO THE GIRL, AND THE GIRL GAVE IT TO THE MOTHER OF HER.
28 The man brought John’s head on a platter and presented it to the girl, who gave it to her mother.
29 AND HAVING HEARD [IT] THE DISCIPLES OF HIM CAME AND THEY TOOK UP THE BODY OF HIM AND LAID IT IN <THE> [A] TOMB.
29 When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb.
30 AND ARE GATHERED TOGETHER THE APOSTLES TO <THE> JESUS AND THEY RELATED TO HIM ALL THINGS AND HOW MUCH THEY HAD DONE AND HOW MUCH THEY HAD TAUGHT.
31 AND HE SPEAKS TO THEM; COME YOU YOURSELVES YOURSELVES APART [YOUR] OWN TO [A] SOLITARY PLACE AND DO REST A LITTLE; WERE FOR THOSE COMING AND THOSE GOING [ARE] MANY, AND NOT EVEN TO EAT WERE THEY ABLE.
31 And He said to them,
“Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while. ” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
32 AND THEY WENT AWAY IN THE BOAT INTO [A] SOLITARY PLACE ON [THEIR] OWN.
32 So they went away in a boat by themselves to a solitary place.
33 AND THEY SAW THEM GOING <THE> CROWDS AND RECOGNIZED HIM MANY AND ON FOOT FROM ALL THE CITIES RAN TOGETHER THERE AND WENT BEFORE THEM AND TOGETHER WENT TO HIM.
33 But many people saw them leaving and recognized them. They ran together on foot from all the towns and arrived before them.
34 AND HAVING GONE OUT HE SAW <THE> JESUS A GREAT CROWD AND WAS MOVED WITH COMPASSION TOWARD THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE LIKE SHEEP NOT HAVING A SHEPHERD. AND HE BEGAN TO TEACH THEM MANY THINGS.
34 When Jesus stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.
35 AND ALREADY WHEN THE HOUR LATE BEING HAVING COME TO HIM THE DISCIPLES OF HIM WERE SAYING THAT DESOLATE IS THE PLACE, AND ALREADY [IT IS] AN HOUR LATE;
35 By now the hour was already late. So the disciples came to Jesus and said “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late.
36 DO DISMISS THEM THAT HAVING GONE TO THE SURROUNDING REGION AND VILLAGES THEY MAY BUY FOR THEMSELVES SOMETHING LOAVES FOR MAY EAT NOT THEY HAVE.
36 Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat. ”
37 <THE> BUT ANSWERING HE SAID TO THEM; DO GIVE TO THEM YOU YOURSELVES [SOMETHING] TO EAT. AND THEY SAY TO HIM; HAVING GONE SHALL WE BUY DENARII TWO HUNDRED OF BREAD AND [THEN] WE WILL GIVE THEM [IT] TO EAT?
37 But Jesus told them,
“You give them something to eat. ”
They asked Him, “Should we go out and spend two hundred denarii to give all of them bread to eat? ”
38 <THE> AND HE SAYS TO THEM; HOW MANY LOAVES HAVE YOU DO GO AND DO SEE. AND HAVING KNOWN THEY SAY; FIVE AND TWO FISH.
38 “Go and see how many loaves you have, ” He told them.
And after checking, they said, “Five— and two fish. ”
39 AND HE COMMANDED THEM TO RECLINE ALL GROUPS [BY] GROUPS ON THE GREEN GRASS.
39 Then Jesus directed them to have the people sit in groups on the green grass.
40 AND THEY SAT DOWN GROUPS [BY] GROUPS BY HUNDREDS AND BY FIFTIES.
40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
41 AND HAVING TAKEN THE FIVE LOAVES AND THE TWO FISH, HAVING LOOKED UP TO THE HEAVEN HE BLESSED AND HE BROKE THE LOAVES AND HE WAS GIVING [THEM] TO THE DISCIPLES OF HIM THAT THEY MAY SET BEFORE THEM, AND THE TWO FISH HE DIVIDED AMONG ALL.
41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And He divided the two fish among them all.
42 AND ATE ALL AND WERE SATISFIED,
42 They all ate and were satisfied,
43 AND THEY TOOK UP OF FRAGMENTS TWELVE HAND-BASKETS FULLNESS AND OF THE FISH.
43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
44 AND WERE THOSE HAVING EATEN OF THE LOAVES ABOUT FIVE THOUSAND MEN.
44 And there were five thousand men who had eaten the loaves.
45 AND IMMEDIATELY HE COMPELLED THE DISCIPLES OF HIM TO CLIMB INTO THE BOAT AND TO GO BEFORE TO THE OTHER SIDE TO BETHSAIDA UNTIL HE HIMSELF DISMISSES THE CROWD.
Jesus Walks on Water
(Matthew 14:22–33 ; John 6:16–21 )
45 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd.
46 AND HAVING TAKEN LEAVE OF THEM HE DEPARTED INTO THE MOUNTAIN TO PRAY.
46 After bidding them farewell, He went up on the mountain to pray.
47 AND WHEN EVENING HAVING COME WAS THE BOAT IN [THE] MIDST OF THE SEA, AND HE HIMSELF ALONE UPON THE LAND.
47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and Jesus was alone on land.
48 AND SEEING THEM STRAINING IN THE ROWING, WAS FOR THE WIND CONTRARY TO THEM, AND ABOUT [THE] FOURTH WATCH OF THE NIGHT HE COMES TO THEM WALKING ON THE SEA AND HE WAS WISHING TO PASS BY THEM.
48 He could see that the disciples were straining to row, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea. He intended to pass by them,
49 <THE> AND HAVING SEEN HIM ON THE SEA WALKING THEY THOUGHT THAT A GHOST [IT] IS, AND CRIED OUT;
49 but when they saw Him walking on the sea, they cried out, thinking He was a ghost—
50 ALL FOR HIM SAW AND WERE TROUBLED. <THE> NOW IMMEDIATELY HE SPOKE WITH THEM AND SAYS TO THEM; TAKE COURAGE! I MYSELF AM [HE], NOT DO FEAR.
50 for they all saw Him and were terrified.
But Jesus spoke up at once:
“Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid. ”
51 AND HE WENT UP TO THEM INTO THE BOAT, AND CEASED THE WIND. AND EXCEEDINGLY OVER EXCESSIVE IN THEMSELVES THEY WERE AMAZED AND WERE MARVELING;
51 Then He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. And the disciples were utterly astounded
52 NOT FOR THEY UNDERSTOOD BY THE LOAVES, BUT WERE OF THEM THE HEART HARDENED.
52 for they had not understood about the loaves, but their hearts had been hardened.
53 AND HAVING PASSED OVER TO THE LAND THEY CAME TO GENNESARET AND DREW TO SHORE.
Jesus Heals at Gennesaret
(Matthew 14:34–36 )
53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and moored the boat.
54 AND WHEN WERE EXITING THEY OUT OF THE BOAT IMMEDIATELY HAVING RECOGNIZED HIM
54 As soon as they got out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus
55 THEY RAN AROUND ALL THE REGION THAT AND THEY BEGAN ON THE MATS THOSE SICK BEING TO CARRY ABOUT TO WHEREVER THEY WERE HEARING THAT THERE HE IS.
55 and ran through that whole region, carrying the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was.
56 AND WHEREVER MAYBE HE WAS ENTERING INTO VILLAGES OR INTO CITIES OR INTO FIELDS IN THE MARKETPLACES THEY WERE LAYING THOSE AILING AND WERE BEGGING HIM THAT ONLY OF THE FRINGE THE CLOTHING OF HIM THEY SHALL TOUCH, AND AS MANY AS MAYBE TOUCHED HIM WERE BEING HEALED.
56 And wherever He went villages and towns and countrysides— they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him just to let them touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched Him were healed.
