47IF NOW <THE> IN HIS WRITINGS NOT YOU BELIEVE, HOW <THE> IN MY DECLARATIONS WILL YOU BELIEVE? 47But since you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say? ”
1AFTER THESE THINGS WENT AWAY <THE> JESUS OVER THE SEA <THE> OF GALILEE — <THE> OF TIBERIAS. The Feeding of the Five Thousand (Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17) 1After this, Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee that is, the Sea of Tiberias.
2AND WAS FOLLOWING NOW AFTER HIM A CROWD GREAT, BECAUSE THEY WERE EXPERIENCING OF HIM THE SIGNS WHICH HE WAS DOING UPON THOSE BEING SICK. 2A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs He was performing on the sick.
3WENT UP NOW ON THE MOUNTAIN <THE> JESUS AND THERE HE WAS SITTING WITH THE DISCIPLES OF HIM. 3Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples.
5HAVING LIFTED UP THEN THE EYES <THE> JESUS AND HAVING SEEN THAT A GREAT CROWD IS COMING TO HIM HE SAYS TO <THE> PHILIP; FROM WHERE WE MAY BUY BREAD THAT MAY EAT THESE? 5When Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat? ”
6THIS NOW HE WAS SAYING TESTING HIM; HE HIMSELF FOR KNEW WHAT HE WAS ABOUT TO DO. 6But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.
7ANSWERED HIM <THE> PHILIP; TWO HUNDRED DENARII WORTH OF LOAVES NOT ARE SUFFICIENT FOR THEM THAT EACH OF THEM LITTLE [PIECE] ONE MAY RECEIVE. 7Philip answered “Two hundred denarii*NoteCloseA denarius was customarily a day’s wage for a laborer; see Matthew 20:2. would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece. ”
8SAYS TO HIM ONE OF THE DISCIPLES OF HIM, ANDREW THE BROTHER OF SIMON PETER; 8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,
9IS A LITTLE BOY ONE HERE WHO HAS FIVE LOAVES BARLEY AND TWO SMALL FISH; BUT THESE WHAT ARE FOR SO MANY? 9“Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many? ”
10SAID NOW <THE> JESUS; DO MAKE THE MEN TO RECLINE. THERE WAS NOW GRASS MUCH IN THE PLACE. RECLINED THEREFORE THE MEN THE NUMBER ABOUT FIVE THOUSAND. 10“Have the people sit down, ” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
11TOOK THEN THE LOAVES <THE> JESUS AND HAVING GIVEN THANKS HE DISTRIBUTED TO THE DISCIPLES <THE> NOW THE DISCIPLES TO THOSE RECLINING, LIKEWISE ALSO OF THE FISH AS MUCH AS THEY WERE WISHING. 11Then Jesus took the loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.
12WHEN NOW THEY WERE FILLED HE SAYS TO THE DISCIPLES OF HIM; DO GATHER TOGETHER THE HAVING BEEN OVER AND ABOVE FRAGMENTS SO THAT NOTHING ANYTHING MAY BE LOST. 12And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted. ”
13THEY GATHERED TOGETHER THEREFORE AND FILLED TWELVE HAND-BASKETS OF FRAGMENTS FROM THE FIVE LOAVES <THE> BARLEY WHICH EXCEEDED TO THOSE HAVING EATEN. 13So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14THE THEREFORE PEOPLE HAVING SEEN WHAT HE HAD DONE SIGN <THE> JESUS WERE SAYING THAT THIS IS TRULY THE PROPHET WHO IS COMING INTO THE WORLD. 14When the people saw the sign that Jesus had performed,*NoteCloseSBL, NA, NE, and WH He had performed they began to say “Truly this is the Prophet who is to come into the world. ”
15JESUS THEREFORE HAVING KNOWN THAT THEY ARE ABOUT TO COME AND TO SEIZE HIM THAT THEY MAY MAKE HIM KING WITHDREW AGAIN TO THE MOUNTAIN HIMSELF ALONE. 15Then Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and make Him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by Himself.
16WHEN NOW EVENING IT BECAME, WENT DOWN THE DISCIPLES OF HIM TO THE SEA, Jesus Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22–33; Mark 6:45–52) 16When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
17AND HAVING CLIMBED INTO <THE> A BOAT THEY WERE GOING OVER THE SEA TO CAPERNAUM. AND DARK ALREADY IT HAD BECOME, AND NOT YET HAD COME TO THEM <THE> JESUS, 17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them.
18<THE> AND THE SEA BY A WIND STRONG BLOWING WAS AGITATED. 18A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.
19HAVING ROWED THEREFORE ABOUT STADIA TWENTY FIVE OR THIRTY, THEY SEE <THE> JESUS WALKING ON THE SEA AND NEAR THE BOAT COMING, AND THEY WERE FRIGHTENED. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles,*NoteCloseGreek about twenty-five or thirty stadia; that is, approximately 2.87 to 3.45 miles (4.62 to 5.55 kilometers) they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the sea— and they were terrified.
20<THE> AND HE SAYS TO THEM; I MYSELF AM [HE], NOT DO FEAR. 20But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid. ”
21THEY WERE WILLING THEN TO RECEIVE HIM INTO THE BOAT, AND IMMEDIATELY WAS THE BOAT AT THE LAND TO WHICH THEY WERE GOING. 21Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22ON THE NEXT DAY THE CROWD WHICH ALREADY STANDING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA HAVING SEEN THAT BOAT OTHER NO WAS THERE ONLY EXCEPT ONE THAT INTO WHICH CLIMBED THE DISCIPLES OF HIM AND FOR NOT WENT WITH THE DISCIPLES OF HIM <THE> JESUS INTO THE BOAT BUT ALONE THE DISCIPLES OF HIM WENT AWAY; Jesus the Bread of Life 22The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with His disciples, but they had gone away alone.
23ANOTHER NOW CAME BOATS FROM TIBERIAS NEAR THE PLACE WHERE THEY ATE THE BREAD WHEN WAS GIVING THANKS TO THE LORD. 23However, some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24WHEN THEREFORE SAW THE CROWD THAT JESUS NOT IS THERE NOR [ARE] THE DISCIPLES OF HIM, THEY CLIMBED ALSO THEMSELVES INTO THE BOATS AND CAME TO CAPERNAUM SEEKING <THE> JESUS, 24So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him.
25AND HAVING FOUND HIM ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA THEY SAID TO HIM; RABBI, WHEN HERE HAVE YOU COME? 25When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here? ”
26ANSWERED THEM <THE> JESUS AND SAID; AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU; YOU SEEK ME NOT BECAUSE YOU SAW SIGNS, BUT BECAUSE YOU ATE OF THE LOAVES AND WERE SATISFIED. 26Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
27DO WORK NOT [FOR] THE FOOD THAT IS PERISHING BUT [FOR] THE FOOD WHICH IS ENDURING UNTO LIFE ETERNAL WHICH THE SON <THE> OF MAN TO YOU WILL GIVE; HIM FOR THE FATHER HAS SEALED <THE> GOD. 27Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval. ”
28THEY SAID THEREFORE TO HIM; WHAT SHALL WE DO THAT WE MAY BE DOING THE WORKS <THE> OF GOD? 28Then they inquired “What must we do to perform the works of God? ”
29ANSWERED <THE> JESUS AND SAID TO THEM; THIS IS THE WORK <THE> OF GOD THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE IN HIM WHOM HAS SENT HE. 29Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent. ”
30THEY SAID THEREFORE TO HIM; WHAT THEN DO YOU YOURSELF [AS A] SIGN THAT WE MAY SEE AND MAY BELIEVE YOU? WHAT WORK DO YOU PERFORM? 30So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform, so that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?
31THE FATHERS OF US THE MANNA ATE IN THE WILDERNESS EVEN AS IT IS WRITTEN: BREAD FROM <THE> HEAVEN HE GAVE THEM TO EAT.’ 31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’*NoteClosePsalm 78:24; see also Exodus 16:4. ”
32SAID THEREFORE TO THEM <THE> JESUS; AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU; NOT MOSES HAS GIVEN YOU THE BREAD FROM <THE> HEAVEN, BUT THE FATHER OF MINE GIVES YOU THE BREAD FROM <THE> HEAVEN <THE> TRUE. 32Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
33THE FOR BREAD <THE> OF GOD IS THE [ONE] COMING DOWN OUT OF <THE> HEAVEN AND LIFE GIVING TO THE WORLD. 33For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. ”
34THEY SAID THEREFORE TO HIM; SIR, ALWAYS DO GIVE TO US <THE> BREAD THIS. 34“Sir, ” they said, “give us this bread at all times. ”
35SAID NOW TO THEM <THE> JESUS; I MYSELF AM THE BREAD <THE> OF LIFE; THE [ONE] COMING TO ME MYSELF CERTAINLY NOT MAY HUNGER, AND THE [ONE] BELIEVING IN ME MYSELF CERTAINLY NOT WILL THIRST AT ANY TIME. 35Jesus answered “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.
36BUT I SAID TO YOU THAT ALSO YOU HAVE SEEN ME AND YET NOT BELIEVE. 36But as I stated you have seen Me and still you do not believe.
37ALL THAT GIVES ME THE FATHER TO ME MYSELF WILL COME, AND THE [ONE] COMING TO ME MYSELF CERTAINLY NOT SHALL I CAST OUT, 37Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away.
38FOR I HAVE COME DOWN FROM <THE> HEAVEN NOT THAT I MAY DO THE WILL <THE> OF ME BUT THE WILL OF THE [ONE WHO] HAVING SENT ME. 38For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me.
39THIS NOW IS THE WILL OF THE [ONE WHO] HAVING SENT ME [THE] FATHER, THAT ALL THAT HE HAS GIVEN ME NONE I MAY LOSE OF IT, BUT MAY RAISE UP IT IN THE LAST DAY. 39And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day.
40THIS FOR IS THE WILL OF THE FATHER MINE, THAT EVERYONE WHO IS BEHOLDING THE SON AND BELIEVING IN HIM HE MAY HAVE LIFE ETERNAL, AND WILL RAISE UP HIM I MYSELF IN THE LAST DAY. 40For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. ”
41WERE GRUMBLING THEREFORE THE JEWS ABOUT HIM BECAUSE HE SAID; I MYSELF AM THE BREAD <THE> HAVING COME DOWN FROM <THE> HEAVEN; 41At this, the Jews began to grumble about Jesus because He had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven. ”
42AND THEY WERE SAYING; SURELY THIS IS JESUS THE SON OF JOSEPH, OF WHOM WE OURSELVES KNOW THE FATHER AND THE MOTHER? HOW THEN SAYS HE THIS THAT FROM <THE> HEAVEN I HAVE COME DOWN? 42They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down from heaven ’?”
43ANSWERED THEREFORE <THE> JESUS AND SAID TO THEM; NOT DO GRUMBLE WITH ONE ANOTHER. 43“Stop grumbling among yourselves, ” Jesus replied.
44NO [ONE] IS ABLE TO COME TO ME, ONLY UNLESS THE FATHER THE [ONE] HAVING SENT ME SHALL DRAW HIM, AND I MYSELF WILL RAISE UP HIM IN THE LAST DAY. 44“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
45IT IS WRITTEN IN THE PROPHETS: AND THEY WILL BE ALL TAUGHT <THE> OF GOD.’ EVERYONE THEREFORE WHO HAVING HEARD FROM THE FATHER AND HAVING LEARNED HE COMES TO ME MYSELF; 45It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught by God.’*NoteCloseIsaiah 54:13 Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to Me—
46NOT FOR THE FATHER HAS SEEN ANYONE ONLY EXCEPT THE [ONE] BEING FROM <THE> GOD, HE HAS SEEN THE FATHER. 46not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father.
47AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU; THE [ONE] BELIEVING INTO ME MYSELF HAS LIFE ETERNAL. 47Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.
49THE FATHERS OF YOU ATE IN THE WILDERNESS THE MANNA AND DIED; 49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50THIS IS THE BREAD <THE> FROM <THE> HEAVEN COMING DOWN, THAT ANYONE OF IT MAY EAT AND NOT MAY DIE. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die.
51I MYSELF AM THE BREAD WHICH IS LIVING <THE> FROM <THE> HEAVEN HAVING COME DOWN; IF ANYONE SHALL HAVE EATEN OF THIS <THE> BREAD, HE WILL LIVE TO THE AGE. AND THE BREAD ALSO THAT I MYSELF WILL GIVE THE FLESH OF ME IS WHICH I MYSELF I WILL GIVE FOR THE OF THE WORLD LIFE. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh. ”
52WERE ARGUING THEREFORE WITH ONE ANOTHER THE JEWS SAYING; HOW IS ABLE THIS [MAN] US TO GIVE THE FLESH OF HIM TO EAT? 52At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves “How can this man give us His flesh to eat? ”
53SAID THEREFORE TO THEM <THE> JESUS; AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU; ONLY UNLESS YOU SHALL HAVE EATEN THE FLESH OF THE SON <THE> OF MAN AND SHALL HAVE DRUNK OF HIM THE BLOOD, NOT YOU HAVE LIFE IN YOURSELVES. 53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you.
54THE [ONE] EATING OF MY <THE> FLESH AND DRINKING OF MY <THE> BLOOD HAS LIFE ETERNAL, AND I MYSELF WILL RAISE UP HIM IN THE LAST DAY. 54Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
55THE FOR FLESH OF ME TRUE IS FOOD, AND THE BLOOD OF ME TRUE IS DRINK. 55For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink.
56THE [ONE] EATING OF MY <THE> FLESH AND DRINKING OF MY <THE> BLOOD IN ME MYSELF ABIDES AND I MYSELF IN HIM. 56Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.
57EVEN AS SENT ME THE LIVING FATHER AND I MYSELF LIVE BECAUSE OF THE FATHER, ALSO THE [ONE] FEEDING ON ME HE ALSO WILL LIVE BECAUSE OF ME MYSELF. 57Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
58THIS IS THE BREAD <THE> FROM <THE> HEAVEN HAVING COME DOWN, NOT EVEN AS ATE THE FATHERS OF YOU <THE> MANNA AND DIED; THE [ONE] EATING THIS <THE> BREAD WILL LIVE TO THE AGE. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna and died, the one who eats this bread will live forever. ”
59THESE THINGS HE SAID IN [THE] SYNAGOGUE TEACHING IN CAPERNAUM. Many Disciples Turn Back (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; Luke 14:25–33) 59Jesus said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
60MANY THEREFORE HAVING HEARD OF THE DISCIPLES OF HIM SAID; DIFFICULT IS <THE> WORD THIS; WHO IS ABLE IT TO HEAR? 60On hearing it, many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it? ”
61KNOWING HOWEVER <THE> JESUS IN HIMSELF THAT ARE GRUMBLING ABOUT THIS THE DISCIPLES OF HIM HE SAID TO THEM; THIS YOU DOES OFFEND? 61Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this teaching Jesus asked them, “Does this offend you?
62WHAT IF THEN YOU SHALL SEE THE SON <THE> OF MAN ASCENDING WHERE HE WAS <THE> BEFORE? 62Then what will happen if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?
63THE SPIRIT IS THE [ONE] GIVING LIFE, THE FLESH NOT PROFITS NO [THING]; THE DECLARATIONS THAT I MYSELF HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU SPIRIT ARE AND LIFE THEY ARE. 63The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
64BUT THEY ARE OF YOU SOME WHO NOT BELIEVE. KNEW FOR FROM [THE] BEGINNING <THE> JESUS WHO ARE THOSE NOT BELIEVING AND WHO IT IS WHO WILL BETRAY HIM. 64However, there are some of you who do not believe. ” (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him.)
65AND HE WAS SAYING; BECAUSE OF THIS HAVE I SAID TO YOU THAT NO [ONE] IS ABLE TO COME TO ME ONLY UNLESS IT SHALL GRANTED TO HIM FROM THE FATHER OF MINE. 65Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him. ”
66FROM THAT [TIME] MANY OUT OF THE DISCIPLES OF HIM WENT AWAY TO THE BACK AND NO LONGER WITH HIM WERE WALKING. 66From that time on many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him.
67SAID THEREFORE <THE> JESUS TO THE TWELVE; SURELY NOT ALSO YOU YOURSELVES ARE WISHING TO GO AWAY? Peter’s Confession of Faith (Matthew 16:13–20; Mark 8:27–30; Luke 9:18–20) 67So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too? ”
68ANSWERED THEREFORE HIM SIMON PETER; LORD, TO WHOM WILL WE GO? DECLARATIONS OF LIFE ETERNAL YOU HAVE, 68Simon Peter replied “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69AND WE OURSELVES HAVE BELIEVED AND HAVE KNOWN THAT YOU YOURSELF ARE <THE> CHRIST THE HOLY ONE <THE> OF GOD WHO IS LIVING. 69We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.*NoteCloseBYZ and TR You are the Christ, the Son of the living God ”
70ANSWERED THEM <THE> JESUS; NOT I MYSELF YOU THE TWELVE DID CHOOSE, AND OF YOU ONE A DEVIL IS? 70Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil! ”
71HE WAS SPEAKING NOW <THE> OF JUDAS [SON] OF SIMON ISCARIOT; HE FOR WAS ABOUT TO BETRAY HIM ONE BEING OF THE TWELVE. 71He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For although Judas was one of the Twelve, he was later to betray Jesus.
