16THESE [ARE] THE STATUTES WHICH HE COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES BETWEEN A MAN AND WIFE HIS BETWEEN A FATHER AND DAUGHTER HIS IN YOUTH<S> HER [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER HER 16These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the relationship between a man and his wife, and between a father and a young daughter still in his home.
2AVENGE [THE] VENGEANCE OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM WITH THE MIDIANITES AFTER YOU WILL BE GATHERED TO PEOPLE<S> YOUR 2“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
3AND HE SPOKE MOSES TO THE PEOPLE <TO> SAYING BE EQUIPPED FROM WITH <THE> YOU MEN FOR <THE> WAR SO THEY MAY BE ON MIDIAN TO GIVE [THE] VENGEANCE OF YAHWEH ON MIDIAN 3So Moses told the people, “Arm some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianites and execute the LORD’s vengeance on them.
4ONE THOUSAND TO THE TRIBE ONE THOUSAND TO THE TRIBE FOR ALL [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL YOU WILL SEND OUT TO <THE> WAR 4Send into battle a thousand men from each tribe of Israel
5AND THEY WERE SELECTED FROM [THE] THOUSANDS OF ISRAEL ONE THOUSAND TO THE TRIBE TWO [PLUS] TEN THOUSAND ARMED [MEN] OF WAR 5So a thousand men were recruited from each tribe of Israel— twelve thousand armed for war.
6AND HE SENT <OBJ.> THEM MOSES ONE THOUSAND TO THE TRIBE TO <THE> WAR <OBJ.> THEM AND <OBJ.> PHINEHAS [THE] SON OF ELEAZAR THE PRIEST TO <THE> WAR AND [THE] VESSELS OF THE HOLY PLACE AND [THE] TRUMPETS OF THE ALARM [WERE] IN HAND HIS 6And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who took with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.
7AND THEY WAGED WAR ON MIDIAN JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES AND THEY KILLED EVERY MALE 7Then they waged war against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.
8AND <OBJ.> [THE] KINGS OF MIDIAN THEY KILLED WITH SLAIN [ONES] THEIR <OBJ.> EVI AND <OBJ.> REKEM AND <OBJ.> ZUR AND <OBJ.> HUR AND <OBJ.> REBA [THE] FIVE [THE] KINGS OF MIDIAN AND <OBJ.> BALAAM [THE] SON OF BEOR THEY KILLED WITH THE SWORD 8Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba— the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
9AND THEY TOOK CAPTIVE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> [THE] WOMEN OF MIDIAN AND <OBJ.> LITTLE ONE[S] THEIR AND <OBJ.> ALL CATTLE THEIR AND <OBJ.> ALL LIVESTOCK THEIR AND <OBJ.> ALL WEALTH THEIR THEY PLUNDERED 9The Israelites captured the Midianite women and their children and they plundered all their herds, flocks, and goods.
10AND <OBJ.> ALL CITIES THEIR IN DWELLING PLACES THEIR AND <OBJ.> ALL ENCAMPMENTS THEIR THEY BURNED WITH <THE> FIRE 10Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites had lived, as well as all their encampments,
11AND THEY TOOK <OBJ.> ALL THE PLUNDER AND <OBJ.> ALL THE BOOTY AMONG <THE> HUMANKIND AND AMONG THE LIVESTOCK 11and carried away all the plunder and spoils, both people and animals.
12AND THEY BROUGHT TO MOSES AND TO ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND TO [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> THE CAPTIVE[S] AND <OBJ.> THE BOOTY AND <OBJ.> THE PLUNDER TO THE CAMP TO [THE] PLAINS OF MOAB WHICH [WERE] AT [THE] JORDAN OF JERICHO 12They brought the captives, spoils, and plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
13AND THEY WENT OUT MOSES AND ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND ALL [THE] LEADERS OF THE CONGREGATION TO MEET THEM TO FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF THE CAMP 13And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp.
14AND HE WAS ANGRY MOSES TOWARDS [THE] OFFICERS OF THE ARMY [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE THOUSANDS AND [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE HUNDREDS WHO WERE COMING FROM [THE] WAR OF THE BATTLE 14But Moses was angry with the officers of the army— the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds— who were returning from the battle.
15AND HE SAID TO THEM MOSES ¿ HAVE YOU LET LIVE EVERY FEMALE 15“Have you spared all the women?” he asked them.
16THERE! THEY THEY WERE TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL BY [THE] WORD OF BALAAM TO OFFER UNFAITHFULNESS IN YAHWEH ON [THE] MATTER OF PEOR AND IT WAS THE PLAGUE AMONG [THE] CONGREGATION OF YAHWEH 16“Look, these women caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to turn unfaithfully against the LORD at Peor so that the plague struck the congregation of the LORD.
17AND THEREFORE KILL EVERY MALE AMONG THE LITTLE ONE[S] AND EVERY WOMAN [WHO HAS] KNOWN A MAN TO [THE] LYING OF A MALE KILL 17So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,
18AND ALL THE LITTLE ONE[S] AMONG THE WOMEN WHO NOT THEY HAVE KNOWN LYING OF A MALE PRESERVE ALIVE FOR <THE> YOURSELVES 18but spare for yourselves every girl who has never had relations with a man.
19AND YOU ENCAMP FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF THE CAMP SEVEN DAYS ANY [ONE WHO] HAS KILLED ANYONE AND ANY [ONE WHO] HAS TOUCHED <IN> THE [ONE] SLAIN YOU WILL PURIFY YOURSELVES ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD AND ON THE DAY <THE> SEVENTH YOU AND CAPTIVE[S] YOUR 19All of you who have killed a person or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to purify both yourselves and your captives.
20AND EVERY GARMENT AND EVERY ARTICLE OF HIDE AND EVERY PRODUCT OF GOAT HAIR<S> AND EVERY ARTICLE OF WOOD YOU WILL PURIFY YOURSELVES 20And purify every garment and leather good, everything made of goat’s hair, and every article of wood.”
21AND HE SAID ELEAZAR THE PRIEST TO [THE] MEN OF THE ARMY WHO HAD GONE TO THE BATTLE THIS [IS] [THE] STATUTE OF THE LAW WHICH HE COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES 21Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:
22ONLY <OBJ.> THE GOLD AND <OBJ.> THE SILVER <OBJ.> THE BRONZE <OBJ.> THE IRON <OBJ.> THE TIN AND <OBJ.> THE LEAD 22Only the gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead—
23EVERY THING WHICH IT WILL GO IN THE FIRE YOU WILL MAKE PASS IN THE FIRE AND IT WILL BE PURE NEVERTHELESS BY [THE] WATER OF IMPURITY IT WILL PURIFY ITSELF AND ALL THAT NOT IT WILL GO IN THE FIRE YOU WILL MAKE PASS IN THE WATER 23everything that can withstand the fire— must be put through the fire, and it will be clean. But it must still be purified with the water of purification. And everything that cannot withstand the fire must pass through the water.
24AND YOU WILL WASH CLOTHES YOUR ON THE DAY <THE> SEVENTH AND YOU WILL BE PURE AND AFTER YOU WILL COME TO THE CAMP 24On the seventh day you are to wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp.”
26LIFT UP <OBJ.> [THE] HEAD OF [THE] BOOTY OF <THE> CAPTIVITY AMONG <THE> HUMANKIND AND AMONG THE LIVESTOCK YOU AND ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND [THE] LEADERS OF [THE] FATHERS OF THE CONGREGATION 26“You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the congregation are to take a count of what was captured, both of man and beast.
27AND YOU WILL DIVIDE <OBJ.> THE BOOTY BETWEEN [THOSE] SKILLED OF THE BATTLE WHO WENT OUT TO <THE> WAR AND BETWEEN ALL THE CONGREGATION 27Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to battle and the rest of the congregation.
28AND YOU WILL RAISE A TAX FOR YAHWEH FROM WITH [THE] MEN OF <THE> WAR WHO WENT OUT TO <THE> WAR ONE PERSON FROM [THE] FIVE <THE> HUNDRED<S> FROM <THE> HUMANKIND AND FROM THE CATTLE AND FROM THE DONKEYS AND FROM THE SHEEP 28Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the soldiers who went into battle: one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, or sheep.
29FROM HALF THEIR YOU WILL TAKE [IT] AND YOU WILL GIVE [IT] TO ELEAZAR THE PRIEST [THE] CONTRIBUTION OF YAHWEH 29Take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the LORD.
30AND FROM [THE] HALF OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL YOU WILL TAKE ONE [PERSON] DRAWN FROM THE FIFTY FROM <THE> HUMANKIND FROM THE CATTLE FROM THE DONKEYS AND FROM THE SHEEP FROM ALL THE LIVESTOCK AND YOU WILL GIVE <OBJ.> THEM TO THE LEVITES [WHO] KEEP <OF> [THE] SERVICE OF [THE] TABERNACLE OF YAHWEH 30From the Israelites’ half, take one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, or other animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.”
31AND HE DID MOSES AND ELEAZAR THE PRIEST JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES 31So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD had commanded Moses,
32AND IT WAS THE BOOTY [THE] REMAINDER OF THE PLUNDER WHICH THEY HAD PLUNDERED [THE] PEOPLE OF THE ARMY SHEEP SIX HUNDRED<S> THOUSAND AND SEVENTY THOUSAND AND FIVE THOUSAND<S> 32and this plunder remained from the spoils the soldiers had taken: 675,000. sheep,
35AND [THE] PERSON[S] OF HUMANKIND FROM THE WOMEN WHO NOT THEY HAD KNOWN LYING OF A MALE EVERY PERSON TWO AND THIRTY THOUSAND 35and 32,000 women who had not slept with a man.
36AND IT WAS THE HALF [THE] PORTION OF THOSE [WHO] HAD GONE OUT IN THE ARMY [THE] NUMBER OF THE SHEEP [WAS] THREE HUNDRED<S> THOUSAND AND THIRTY THOUSAND AND SEVEN THOUSAND<S> AND FIVE HUNDRED<S> 36This was the half portion for those who had gone to war: 337,500 sheep,
37AND IT WAS THE TAX FOR YAHWEH FROM THE SHEEP SIX HUNDRED<S> FIVE AND SEVENTY 37including a tribute to the LORD of 675
38AND THE CATTLE [WERE] SIX AND THIRTY THOUSAND AND TAX THEIR FOR YAHWEH [WAS] TWO AND SEVENTY 3836,000. cattle, including a tribute to the LORD of 72,
39AND DONKEYS [WERE] THIRTY THOUSAND AND FIVE HUNDRED<S> AND TAX THEIR FOR YAHWEH [WAS] ONE AND SIXTY 3930,500 donkeys, including a tribute to the LORD of 61,
40AND [THE] PERSON[S] OF HUMANKIND [WERE] SIX- TEEN THOUSAND AND TAX THEIR FOR YAHWEH [WAS] TWO AND THIRTY PERSON[S] 40and 16,000 people, including a tribute to the LORD of 32.
41AND HE GAVE MOSES <OBJ.> [THE] TAX OF [THE] CONTRIBUTION OF YAHWEH TO ELEAZAR THE PRIEST JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES 41Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as an offering for the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
42AND FROM [THE] HALF OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHICH HE HAD DIVIDED MOSES FROM THE MEN WHO HAD GONE TO WAR 42From the Israelites’ half, which Moses had set apart from the men who had gone to war,
43AND IT WAS [THE] HALF OF THE CONGREGATION FROM THE SHEEP THREE HUNDRED<S> THOUSAND AND THIRTY THOUSAND SEVEN THOUSAND<S> AND FIVE HUNDRED<S> 43this half belonged to the congregation: 337,500 sheep,
47AND HE TOOK MOSES FROM [THE] HALF OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> THOSE DRAWN ONE FROM THE FIFTY FROM <THE> HUMANKIND AND FROM THE LIVESTOCK AND HE GAVE <OBJ.> THEM TO THE LEVITES [WHO] KEEP <OF> [THE] SERVICE OF [THE] TABERNACLE OF YAHWEH JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES 47From the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty persons and animals and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.
48AND THEY DREW NEAR TO MOSES THE OFFICERS WHO [WERE] OF [THE] THOUSANDS OF THE ARMY [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE THOUSANDS AND [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE HUNDREDS The Voluntary Offering 48Then the officers who were over the units of the army— the commanders of thousands and of hundreds— approached Moses
49AND THEY SAID TO MOSES SERVANTS YOUR THEY HAVE LIFTED UP <OBJ.> [THE] HEAD OF [THE] MEN OF <THE> WAR WHO [WERE] IN HAND OUR AND NOT HE IS MISSING FROM US ANYONE 49and said “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.
50AND WE HAVE BROUGHT NEAR <OBJ.> [THE] OFFERING OF YAHWEH EVERYONE [THAT] WHICH HE FOUND AN ARTICLE OF GOLD AN ARMLET AND A BRACELET A SIGNET-RING AN EARRING AND AN ORNAMENT TO MAKE ATONEMENT ON SELVES OUR <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH 50So we have brought to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man acquired— armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces— to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”
51AND HE TOOK MOSES AND ELEAZAR THE PRIEST <OBJ.> THE GOLD FROM WITH <THE> THEM EVERY ARTICLE OF WORK 51So Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them all the articles made out of gold.
52AND IT WAS ALL [THE] GOLD OF THE CONTRIBUTION WHICH THEY RAISED FOR YAHWEH SIX- TEEN THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED<S> AND FIFTY SHEKEL[S] FROM WITH [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE THOUSANDS AND FROM WITH [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE HUNDREDS 52All the gold that the commanders of thousands and of hundreds presented as an offering to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels.*NoteClose16,750 shekels is approximately 420.8 pounds or 190.9 kilograms.
53[THE] MEN OF THE ARMY THEY HAD TAKEN PLUNDER EVERYONE FOR <THE> HIMSELF 53Each of the soldiers had taken plunder for himself.
54AND HE TOOK MOSES AND ELEAZAR THE PRIEST <OBJ.> THE GOLD FROM WITH [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE THOUSANDS AND THE HUNDREDS AND THEY BROUGHT <OBJ.> IT INTO [THE] TENT OF MEETING A MEMORIAL FOR [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH 54And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
