54AND HE TOOK MOSES AND ELEAZAR THE PRIEST <OBJ.> THE GOLD FROM WITH [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE THOUSANDS AND THE HUNDREDS AND THEY BROUGHT <OBJ.> IT INTO [THE] TENT OF MEETING A MEMORIAL FOR [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH 54And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
1AND LIVESTOCK MUCH IT BELONGED TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD NUMEROUS VERY AND THEY SAW <OBJ.> [THE] LAND OF JAZER AND <OBJ.> [THE] LAND OF GILEAD AND THERE! THE PLACE [WAS] A PLACE OF LIVESTOCK The Tribes East of the Jordan (Deuteronomy 3:12–22; Joshua 13:8–14) 1Now the Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, and they saw that the region was suitable for livestock.
2AND THEY CAME [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND THEY SAID TO MOSES AND TO ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND TO [THE] LEADERS OF THE CONGREGATION <TO> SAYING 2So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the congregation, and said,
3ATAROTH AND DIBON AND JAZER AND NIMRAH AND HESHBON AND ELEALEH AND SEBAM AND NEBO AND BEON 3“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam,*NoteCloseHebrew; see verse 38, and similarly in SP and LXX Sibmah Nebo, and Beon,
4THE LAND WHICH HE DEFEATED YAHWEH <TO> BEFORE [THE] CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL [IS] A LAND OF LIVESTOCK IT AND [BELONGS] TO SERVANTS YOUR LIVESTOCK 4which the LORD conquered before the congregation of Israel, are suitable for livestock and your servants have livestock.”
5AND THEY SAID IF WE HAVE FOUND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR LET IT BE GIVEN <OBJ.> THE LAND <THE> THIS TO SERVANTS YOUR TO A POSSESSION MAY NOT YOU MAKE PASS OVER US <OBJ.> THE JORDAN 5“If we have found favor in your sight,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.”
6AND HE SAID MOSES TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN ¿ BROTHERS YOUR WILL THEY GO TO <THE> BATTLE AND YOU WILL YOU REMAIN? HERE 6But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?
7AND <TO> WHY? DO YOU DISCOURAGE! <OBJ.> [THE] HEART OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM PASSING OVER INTO THE LAND WHICH HE HAS GIVEN TO <THE> THEM YAHWEH 7Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land that the LORD has given them?
8THUS THEY DID FATHERS YOUR WHEN SENT I <OBJ.> THEM FROM KADESH BARNEA TO SEE <OBJ.> THE LAND 8This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to inspect the land.
9AND THEY WENT UP TO [THE] WADI OF ESHCOL AND THEY SAW <OBJ.> THE LAND AND THEY DISCOURAGED <OBJ.> [THE] HEART OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO NOT TO GO INTO THE LAND WHICH HE HAD GIVEN TO <THE> THEM YAHWEH 9For when your fathers went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land that the LORD had given them.
10AND IT BURNED [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH ON THE DAY <THE> THAT AND HE SWORE AN OATH <TO> SAYING 10So the anger of the LORD was kindled that day, and He swore an oath, saying,
11IF THEY WILL SEE THE MEN WHO CAME UP FROM EGYPT FROM A SON OF TWENTY YEAR[S] AND UP -WARDS <OBJ.> THE LAND WHICH I SWORE TO ABRAHAM TO ISAAC AND TO JACOB FOR NOT THEY HAVE FILLED AFTER ME 11‘Because they did not follow Me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years of age or older who came out of Egypt will see the land that I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—
12EXCEPT CALEB [THE] SON OF JEPHUNNEH THE KENIZZITE AND JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN FOR THEY HAVE FILLED AFTER YAHWEH 12not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun— because they did follow the LORD wholeheartedly.’
13AND IT BURNED [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH ON ISRAEL AND HE MADE WANDER THEM IN THE WILDERNESS FORTY YEAR[S] UNTIL WAS FINISHED ALL THE GENERATION WHICH HAD DONE THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH 13The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation who had done evil in His sight was gone.
14AND HERE! YOU HAVE RISEN UP IN PLACE OF FATHERS YOUR A BROOD OF PEOPLE SINFUL TO ADD AGAIN TO [THE] BURNING OF [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH AGAINST ISRAEL 14Now behold, you, a brood of sinners, have risen up in place of your fathers to further stoke the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.
15FOR YOU WILL TURN BACK! FROM AFTER HIM AND HE WILL REPEAT AGAIN TO LEAVE IT IN THE WILDERNESS AND YOU WILL DESTROY <TO> ALL THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS 15For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction
16AND THEY DREW NEAR TO HIM AND THEY SAID FOLDS OF SHEEP WE WILL BUILD FOR LIVESTOCK OUR HERE AND CITIES FOR LITTLE ONE[S] OUR 16Then the Gadites and Reubenites approached Moses and said, “We want to build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our little ones.
17AND WE WE WILL EQUIP OURSELVES HURRIED <TO> BEFORE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL UNTIL THAT <IF> WE HAVE BROUGHT THEM TO PLACE THEIR AND IT WILL REMAIN LITTLE ONE[S] OUR IN [THE] CITIES OF <THE> FORTIFICATION <FROM> BECAUSE OF [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE LAND 17But we will arm ourselves and be ready*NoteCloseLXX we will arm ourselves for battle to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our little ones will remain in the fortified cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
18NOT WE WILL RETURN TO HOUSES OUR UNTIL HAVE INHERITED [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL EVERYONE INHERITANCE HIS 18We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has taken possession of his inheritance.
19FOR NOT WE WILL INHERIT WITH THEM FROM [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN AND BEYOND FOR IT HAS COME INHERITANCE OUR TO US FROM [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN EAST -WARD 19Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”
20AND HE SAID TO THEM MOSES IF YOU WILL DO! <OBJ.> THE THING <THE> THIS IF YOU WILL EQUIP YOURSELVES <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH FOR <THE> BATTLE 20Moses replied “If you will do this— if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle,
21AND HE WILL PASS OVER OF YOU EVERY EQUIPPED [MAN] <OBJ.> THE JORDAN <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH UNTIL HAS DISPOSSESSED HE <OBJ.> ENEMIES HIS FROM BEFORE HIM 21and if every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD, until He has driven His enemies out before Him,
22AND IT WILL BE SUBDUED THE LAND <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND AFTER YOU WILL RETURN AND YOU WILL BE FREE FROM YAHWEH AND FROM ISRAEL AND IT WILL BELONG THE LAND <THE> THIS TO <THE> YOU TO A POSSESSION <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH 22then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD.
23AND IF NOT YOU WILL DO! THUS THERE! YOU HAVE SINNED TO YAHWEH AND KNOW SIN YOUR THAT IT WILL FIND <OBJ.> YOU 23But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD— and be assured that your sin will find you out.
24BUILD FOR <THE> YOURSELVES CITIES FOR LITTLE ONE[S] YOUR AND FOLDS FOR SHEEP YOUR AND THE [THING WHICH] HAS GONE OUT FROM MOUTH YOUR YOU WILL DO 24Build cities for your little ones and folds for your flocks, but do what you have promised
25AND HE SAID [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN TO MOSES <TO> SAYING SERVANTS YOUR THEY WILL DO JUST AS LORD MY [IS] COMMANDING 25The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “Your servants will do just as our lord commands.
26LITTLE ONE[S] OUR WIVES OUR LIVESTOCK OUR AND ALL CATTLE OUR THEY WILL BE THERE IN [THE] CITIES OF <THE> GILEAD 26Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead.
27AND SERVANTS YOUR THEY WILL PASS OVER EVERY EQUIPPED [MAN] OF WAR <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH FOR <THE> BATTLE JUST AS LORD MY [IS] SAYING 27But your servants are equipped for war, and every man will cross over to the battle before the LORD, just as our lord says.”
28AND HE COMMANDED OF <THE> THEM MOSES <OBJ.> ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND <OBJ.> JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN AND <OBJ.> [THE] LEADERS OF [THE] FATHERS OF THE TRIBES OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 28So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the family leaders of the tribes of Israel.
29AND HE SAID MOSES TO THEM IF THEY WILL PASS OVER [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN WITH YOU <OBJ.> THE JORDAN EVERY EQUIPPED [MAN] FOR <THE> BATTLE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND IT WILL BE SUBDUED THE LAND <TO> BEFORE YOU AND YOU WILL GIVE TO <THE> THEM <OBJ.> [THE] LAND OF <THE> GILEAD TO A POSSESSION 29And Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you with every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.
30AND IF NOT THEY WILL PASS OVER EQUIPPED WITH YOU AND THEY WILL HAVE POSSESSIONS IN MIDST OF YOU IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN 30But if they do not arm themselves and go across with you, then they must accept their possession among you in the land of Canaan.”
31AND THEY ANSWERED [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN <TO> SAYING <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE HAS SPOKEN YAHWEH TO SERVANTS YOUR THUS WE WILL DO 31The Gadites and Reubenites replied, “As the LORD has spoken to your servants, so we will do.
32WE WE WILL PASS OVER EQUIPPED <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH [THE] LAND OF CANAAN AND [WILL BE] WITH US [THE] POSSESSION OF INHERITANCE OUR FROM [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN 32We will cross over into the land of Canaan armed before the LORD, that we may have our inheritance on this side of the Jordan.”
33AND HE GAVE TO <THE> THEM MOSES TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND TO [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH [THE] SON OF JOSEPH <OBJ.> [THE] KINGDOM OF SIHON [THE] KING OF THE AMORITE[S] AND <OBJ.> [THE] KINGDOM OF OG [THE] KING OF <THE> BASHAN THE LAND TO CITIES ITS WITH TERRITORIES [THE] CITIES OF THE LAND ALL AROUND 33So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan— the land including its cities and the territory surrounding them.
34AND THEY BUILT [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD <OBJ.> DIBON AND <OBJ.> ATAROTH AND <OBJ.> AROER 34And the Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
36AND <OBJ.> BETH NIMRAH AND <OBJ.> BETH HARAN CITIES OF FORTIFICATION AND FOLDS OF SHEEP 36Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and they built folds for their flocks.
37AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN THEY BUILT <OBJ.> HESHBON AND <OBJ.> ELEALEH AND <OBJ.> KIRIATHAIM 37The Reubenites built up Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38AND <OBJ.> NEBO AND <OBJ.> BAAL MEON CHANGED NAME AND <OBJ.> SIBMAH AND THEY CALLED BY NAMES <OBJ.> [THE] NAMES OF THE CITIES WHICH THEY HAD BUILT 38as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. And they renamed the cities they rebuilt.
39AND THEY WENT [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MAKIR [THE] SON OF MANASSEH GILEAD TOWARDS AND THEY CAPTURED IT AND HE DISPOSSESSED <OBJ.> THE AMORITE[S] WHO [WAS] IN <THE> IT 39The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.
40AND HE GAVE MOSES <OBJ.> <THE> GILEAD TO MAKIR [THE] SON OF MANASSEH AND HE DWELT IN <THE> IT 40So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled there.
41AND JAIR [THE] SON OF MANASSEH HE WENT AND HE CAPTURED <OBJ.> VILLAGES THEIR AND HE CALLED <OBJ.> THEM HAVVOTH JAIR 41Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages and called them Havvoth-jair.*NoteCloseHavvoth-jair means the villages of Jair.
42AND NOBAH HE WENT AND HE CAPTURED <OBJ.> KENATH AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS ITS AND HE CALLED <TO> <THE> IT NOBAH BY OWN NAME HIS 42And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages and called it Nobah, after his own name.
