1[THE] VISION OF OBADIAH THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH OF EDOM A REPORT WE HAVE HEARD FROM WITH YAHWEH AND AN ENVOY AMONG THE NATIONS HE HAS BEEN SENT ARISE SO LET US ARISE ON IT FOR <THE> BATTLE The Destruction of Edom (Jeremiah 49:7–22) 1This is the vision of Obadiah: This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom— We have heard a message from the LORD; an envoy has been sent among the nations to say, “Rise up, and let us go to battle against her!”—

5IF THIEVES THEY CAME TO YOU IF DESTROYERS OF NIGHT HOW! YOU WILL BE DESTROYED ¿ NOT WILL THEY STEAL SUFFICIENCY THEIR IF GRAPE GATHERERS THEY CAME TO YOU ¿ NOT WILL THEY LEAVE GLEANINGS 5“If thieves came to you, if robbers by night— oh, how you will be ruined— would they not steal only what they wanted? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings?
6HOW! THEY WILL BE PLUNDERED ESAU THEY WILL BE SEARCHED OUT HIDDEN TREASURES ITS 6But how Esau will be pillaged, his hidden treasures sought out!
7TO THE BORDER THEY WILL SEND AWAY YOU ALL [THE] MEN OF COVENANT YOUR THEY WILL DECEIVE YOU THEY WILL PREVAIL TO YOU [THE] MEN OF PEACE YOUR FOOD YOUR THEY WILL SET A TRAP UNDER YOU THERE NOT [IS] UNDERSTANDING IN HIM 7All the men allied with you will drive you to the border; the men at peace with you will deceive and overpower you. 9AND THEY WILL BE DISMAYED WARRIORS YOUR O TEMAN SO THAT HE MAY BE CUT OFF EVERYONE FROM [THE] MOUNTAIN OF ESAU FROM SLAUGHTER 9Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be terrified, so that everyone in the mountains of Esau will be cut down in the slaughter.
10FROM [THE] VIOLENCE OF BROTHER YOUR JACOB IT WILL COVER YOU SHAME AND YOU WILL BE CUT OFF FOR EVER 10Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame and cut off forever.
11ON [THE] DAY STANDING YOU FROM BEFORE ON [THE] DAY TOOK CAPTIVE STRANGERS WEALTH HIS AND FOREIGNERS THEY CAME GATES HIS AND ON JERUSALEM THEY CAST A LOT ALSO YOU [WERE] LIKE ONE FROM THEM 11On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.
12AND MAY NOT YOU LOOK ON [THE] DAY OF BROTHER YOUR ON [THE] DAY OF MISFORTUNE HIS AND MAY NOT YOU REJOICE TO [THE] PEOPLE OF JUDAH ON [THE] DAY PERISH THEY AND MAY NOT YOU MAKE BIG MOUTH YOUR ON [THE] DAY OF TROUBLE 12But you should not gloat in that day, your brother’s day of misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast proudly*NoteCloseHebrew nor enlarge your mouth in the day of their distress.
13MAY NOT YOU GO IN [THE] GATE OF PEOPLE MY ON [THE] DAY OF DISASTER THEIR MAY NOT YOU LOOK ALSO YOU ON CALAMITY HIS ON [THE] DAY OF DISASTER HIS AND MAY NOT YOU STRETCH OUT ON WEALTH HIS ON [THE] DAY OF DISASTER HIS 13You should not enter the gate of My people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over their affliction in the day of their disaster, nor loot their wealth in the day of their disaster.
14AND MAY NOT YOU STAND AT THE PARTING OF WAYS TO CUT OFF <OBJ.> FUGITIVES HIS AND MAY NOT YOU DELIVER UP SURVIVORS HIS ON [THE] DAY OF TROUBLE 14Nor should you stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, nor deliver up their survivors in the day of their distress.
15FOR [IS] NEAR [THE] DAY OF YAHWEH ON ALL THE NATIONS JUST AS YOU HAVE DONE IT WILL BE DONE TO YOU RECOMPENSE YOUR IT WILL RETURN ON OWN HEAD YOUR The Deliverance of Israel 15For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your recompense will return upon your own head.
16FOR JUST AS YOU HAVE DRUNK ON [THE] MOUNTAIN OF HOLINESS MY THEY WILL DRINK ALL THE NATIONS CONTINUALLY AND THEY WILL DRINK AND THEY WILL SWALLOW AND THEY WILL BE LIKE NOT THEY HAD BEEN 16For as you drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and gulp it down; they will be as if they had never existed.
17AND ON [THE] MOUNTAIN OF ZION IT WILL BE DELIVERANCE AND IT WILL BE A HOLY PLACE AND THEY WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF [THE] HOUSE JACOB <OBJ.> POSSESSIONS THEIR 17But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, and it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will reclaim their possession.
18AND IT WILL BE [THE] HOUSE OF JACOB A FIRE AND [THE] HOUSE OF JOSEPH [WILL BE] A FLAME AND [THE] HOUSE OF ESAU [WILL BECOME] <INTO> STUBBLE AND THEY WILL BURN <IN> THEM AND THEY WILL CONSUME THEM AND NOT HE WILL BELONG A SURVIVOR TO [THE] HOUSE OF ESAU FOR YAHWEH HE HAS SPOKEN 18Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire, and the house of Joseph a burning flame; but the house of Esau will be stubble— Jacob will set it ablaze and consume it. Therefore no survivor will remain from the house of Esau.” For the LORD has spoken.
19AND THEY WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF THE NEGEV <OBJ.> [THE] MOUNTAIN OF ESAU AND THE SHEPHELAH <OBJ.> PHILISTINES AND THEY WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> [THE] REGION OF EPHRAIM AND <OBJ.> [THE] REGION OF SAMARIA AND BENJAMIN <OBJ.> <THE> GILEAD 19Those from the Negev will possess the mountains of Esau; those from the foothills*NoteCloseHebrew Shephelah or lowlands; that is, the western foothills of Judea will possess the land of the Philistines. They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.
20AND [THE] EXILE[S] OF THE FORTRESS <THE> THIS OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHO [WILL BE] CANAANITES TO ZAREPHATH AND [THE] EXILE[S] OF JERUSALEM WHO [ARE] IN SEPHARAD THEY WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> [THE] CITIES OF THE NEGEV 20And the exiles of this host of the Israelites will possess the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath; and the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.
21AND THEY WILL GO UP DELIVERERS ON [THE] MOUNTAIN OF ZION TO RULE <OBJ.> [THE] MOUNTAIN OF ESAU AND IT WILL BELONG TO YAHWEH THE KINGSHIP 21The deliverers will ascend*NoteCloseOr The deliverers will go up from; LXX Those being delivered will go up Mount Zion to rule over the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will belong to the LORD.
