22AND [THE] REST OF [THE] MATTERS OF ABIJAH AND WAYS HIS AND WORDS HIS [ARE] WRITTEN IN [THE] RECORD OF THE PROPHET IDDO 22Now the rest of the acts of Abijah, along with his ways and his words, are written in the Treatise*NoteCloseOr Exposition or Study of the Prophet Iddo.
1AND HE LAY DOWN ABIJAH WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED <OBJ.> HIM IN [THE] CITY OF DAVID AND HE BECAME KING ASA SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM IN DAYS HIS IT WAS AT PEACE THE LAND TEN YEARS Asa Reigns in Judah (1 Kings 15:9–15) 1Then Abijah rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son Asa reigned in his place, and in his days the land was at peace for ten years.
2AND HE DID ASA THE GOOD AND THE RIGHT IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH GOD HIS 2And Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.
3AND HE REMOVED <OBJ.> [THE] ALTARS OF <THE> FOREIGNNESS AND THE HIGH PLACES AND HE BROKE DOWN <OBJ.> THE SACRED PILLARS AND HE CUT DOWN <OBJ.> THE ASHERAH POLES 3He removed the foreign altars and high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and chopped down the Asherah poles.
4AND HE SAID TO JUDAH TO SEEK <OBJ.> YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS THEIR AND TO OBSERVE THE LAW AND THE COMMANDMENT 4He commanded the people of Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to observe the law and the commandments.
5AND HE REMOVED FROM ALL [THE] CITIES OF JUDAH <OBJ.> THE HIGH PLACES AND <OBJ.> THE INCENSE ALTARS AND IT WAS AT PEACE THE KINGDOM <TO> BEFORE HIM 5He also removed the high places and incense altars from all the cities of Judah, and under him the kingdom was at peace.
6AND HE BUILT CITIES OF FORTIFICATION IN JUDAH FOR IT WAS AT PEACE THE LAND AND THERE NOT WITH HIM [WAS] WAR IN THE YEARS <THE> THESE FOR HE HAD GIVEN REST YAHWEH TO HIM 6Because the land was at peace, Asa built fortified cities in Judah. In those days no one made war with him, because the LORD had given him rest.
7AND HE SAID TO JUDAH LET US BUILD <OBJ.> THE CITIES <THE> THESE AND LET US SURROUND [THEM] WALL AND TOWERS GATES AND BARS STILL IT THE LAND [IS] <TO> BEFORE US FOR WE HAVE SOUGHT <OBJ.> YAHWEH GOD OUR WE SOUGHT [HIM] AND HE HAS GIVEN REST TO US FROM ROUND ABOUT AND THEY BUILT AND THEY PROSPERED 7So he said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is still ours because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.
8AND IT BELONGED TO ASA AN ARMY BEARING BODY SHIELD[S] AND SPEAR[S] FROM JUDAH THREE HUNDRED<S> THOUSAND AND OF BENJAMIN [THOSE WHO] CARRY <OF> A SHIELD AND [THOSE WHO] BEND <OF> A BOW TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THOUSAND ALL THESE [WERE] MIGHTY [MEN] OF STRENGTH 8Asa had an army of 300,000 men from Judah bearing large shields and spears, and 280,000 men from Benjamin bearing small shields and drawing the bow. All these were mighty men of valor.
9AND HE CAME OUT AGAINST THEM ZERAH THE CUSHITE WITH AN ARMY A THOUSAND THOUSAND<S> AND CHARIOTS THREE HUNDRED<S> AND HE CAME TO MARESHAH 9Then Zerah the Cushite came against them with an army of 1,000,000 men*NoteCloseOr an army of thousands and thousands; Hebrew an army of a thousand thousands and 300 chariots, and they advanced as far as Mareshah.
10AND HE WENT OUT ASA <TO> BEFORE HIM AND THEY DREW UP IN FORMATION BATTLE IN [THE] VALLEY OF ZEPHATHAH TO MARESHAH 10So Asa marched out against him and lined up in battle formation in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.*NoteCloseOr the valley north of Mareshah
11AND HE CALLED OUT ASA TO YAHWEH GOD HIS AND HE SAID O YAHWEH THERE NOT [IS] WITH YOU TO HELP BETWEEN GREAT AND NOT STRENGTH HELP US O YAHWEH GOD OUR FOR ON YOU WE DEPEND AND IN NAME YOUR WE HAVE COME ON THE MULTITUDE <THE> THIS O YAHWEH [ARE] GOD OUR YOU MAY NOT HE RETAIN WITH YOU A MAN 11Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “O LORD, there is no one besides You to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on You, and in Your name we have come against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God. Do not let a mere mortal prevail against You.”
12AND HE DEFEATED YAHWEH <OBJ.> THE CUSHITES <TO> BEFORE ASA AND <TO> BEFORE JUDAH AND THEY FLED THE CUSHITES 12So the LORD struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah, and the Cushites fled.
13AND HE PURSUED THEM ASA AND THE PEOPLE WHICH [WAS] WITH HIM TO TO GERAR AND IT FELL OF [THE] CUSHITES TO NOT [BELONGED] TO THEM PRESERVATION FOR THEY HAD BEEN BROKEN <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND <TO> BEFORE ARMY HIS AND THEY CARRIED OFF BOOTY MUCH VERY 13Then Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not recover, for they were crushed before the LORD and His army. So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of plunder
14AND THEY STRUCK DOWN <OBJ.> ALL THE CITIES AROUND GERAR FOR IT WAS [THE] DREAD OF YAHWEH ON THEM AND THEY PLUNDERED <OBJ.> ALL THE CITIES FOR PLUNDER MUCH IT WAS IN THEM 14and attacked all the cities around Gerar, because the terror of the LORD had fallen upon them. They plundered all the cities, since there was much plunder there.
15AND ALSO [THE] TENTS OF LIVESTOCK THEY STRUCK DOWN AND THEY TOOK CAPTIVE SHEEP TO ABUNDANCE AND CAMELS AND THEY RETURNED JERUSALEM 15They also attacked the tents of the herdsmen and carried off many sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
