30WHICH ALSO THEY DID HAVING SENT [IT] TO THE ELDERS THROUGH [THE] HAND OF BARNABAS AND SAUL. 30This they did, sending their gifts to the elders with Barnabas and Saul.
1AT THAT [VERY] NOW <THE> TIME PUT FORTH HEROD THE KING THE HANDS TO MISTREAT SOME OF THOSE OF THE CHURCH. James Killed, Peter Imprisoned 1About that time, King Herod*NoteCloseThat is, King Herod Agrippa reached out to harm*NoteCloseLiterally put forth the hands to mistreat some who belonged to the church.
2HE EXECUTED THEN JAMES THE BROTHER OF JOHN WITH THE SWORD. 2He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.
3AND HAVING SEEN NOW THAT PLEASING IT IS TO THE JEWS, HE PROCEEDED TO TAKE ALSO PETER — THESE WERE NOW THE DAYS OF THE UNLEAVENED [BREAD] — 3And seeing that this pleased the Jews, Herod proceeded to seize Peter during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.*NoteCloseLiterally seize Peter—now these were the days of the Unleavened; see Exodus 12:14–20.
4WHOM ALSO HAVING SEIZED HE PUT IN PRISON HAVING DELIVERED [HIM] TO FOUR SETS OF FOUR SOLDIERS TO GUARD HIM, INTENDING AFTER THE PASSOVER TO BRING OUT HIM TO THE PEOPLE. 4He arrested him and put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out to the people after the Passover.
5<THE> INDEED THEREFORE PETER WAS KEPT IN THE PRISON; PRAYER HOWEVER WAS FERVENTLY BEING MADE BY THE CHURCH TO <THE> GOD CONCERNING HIM. The Rescue of Peter 5So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was fervently praying to God for him.
6WHEN THEN WAS ABOUT TO BRING FORTH HIM <THE> HEROD, IN THE NIGHT THAT [ONE] WAS <THE> PETER SLEEPING BETWEEN TWO SOLDIERS BOUND WITH CHAINS TWO, GUARDS ALSO BEFORE THE DOOR WERE WATCHING THE PRISON. 6On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with sentries standing guard at the entrance to the prison.
7AND BEHOLD AN ANGEL OF [THE] LORD STOOD BY AND A LIGHT SHONE IN THE CELL; HAVING STRUCK THEN THE SIDE <THE> OF PETER HE WOKE UP HIM SAYING; DO RISE UP WITH SPEED. AND FELL OF HIM THE CHAINS OFF THE HANDS. 7Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly. ” And the chains fell off his wrists.
8SAID THEN THE ANGEL TO HIM; DO DRESS YOURSELF AND DO YOURSELF PUT ON THE SANDALS OF YOU. HE DID AND SO. AND HE SAYS TO HIM; DO YOURSELF WRAP AROUND THE CLOAK OF YOU AND DO FOLLOW ME. 8“Get dressed and put on your sandals, ” said the angel Peter did so, and the angel told him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me. ”
9AND HAVING GONE FORTH HE WAS FOLLOWING HIM; AND NOT DID KNOW THAT REAL IS WHAT IS HAPPENING THROUGH THE ANGEL, HE WAS THINKING HOWEVER A VISION TO SEE. 9So Peter followed him out, but he was unaware that what the angel was doing was real. He thought he was only seeing a vision.
10HAVING PASSED THROUGH THEN A FIRST GUARD AND A SECOND THEY CAME TO THE GATE <THE> IRON WHICH IS LEADING INTO THE CITY, WHICH BY ITSELF OPENED TO THEM, AND HAVING GONE OUT THEY WENT ON THROUGH STREET ONE AND IMMEDIATELY DEPARTED THE ANGEL FROM HIM. 10They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city, which opened for them by itself. When they had gone outside and walked the length of one block, the angel suddenly left him.
11AND <THE> PETER TO HIMSELF HAVING COME SAID; NOW I KNOW TRULY THAT HAS SENT FORTH THE LORD THE ANGEL OF HIM AND DELIVERED ME OUT OF [THE] HAND OF HEROD AND ALL THE EXPECTATION OF THE PEOPLE OF THE JEWS. 11Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent His angel and rescued me from Herod’s grasp and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating. ”
12HAVING CONSIDERED [IT] ALSO HE CAME TO THE HOUSE <THE> OF MARY THE MOTHER OF JOHN WHO IS CALLED MARK, WHERE WERE MANY GATHERED TOGETHER AND PRAYING. 12And when he had realized this, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered together and were praying.
13WHEN WAS KNOCKING THEN <THE> HE [AT] THE DOOR OF THE GATE CAME A GIRL TO ANSWER NAMED RHODA; 13He knocked at the outer gate, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer it.
14AND HAVING RECOGNIZED THE VOICE <THE> OF PETER FROM <THE> JOY NOT SHE OPENED THE GATE HAVING RUN IN BUT SHE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN STANDING <THE> PETER BEFORE THE GATE. 14When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed that she forgot to open the gate, but ran inside and announced “Peter is standing at the gate! ”
15<THE> AND TO HER THEY SAID; YOU RAVE. <THE> BUT SHE WAS INSISTING [IT] SO TO BE. <THE> AND THEY WERE SAYING; THE ANGEL IT IS OF HIM. 15“You are out of your mind, ” they told her. But when she kept insisting it was so, they said, “It must be his angel. ”
16<THE> BUT PETER WAS CONTINUING KNOCKING; HAVING OPENED [IT] THEN THEY SAW HIM AND WERE AMAZED. 16But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astounded.
17HAVING MADE A SIGN THEN TO THEM WITH THE HAND TO BE SILENT, HE RELATED TO THEM HOW THE LORD HIM HAD BROUGHT OUT OF THE PRISON; HE SAID THEN; DO REPORT TO JAMES AND TO THE BROTHERS THESE THINGS. AND HAVING GONE OUT HE WENT TO ANOTHER PLACE. 17Peter motioned with his hand for silence, and he described how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Send word to James and to the brothers, ” he said, and he left for another place.
18WHEN WAS COMING NOW DAY THERE WAS DISTURBANCE NO SMALL AMONG THE SOLDIERS WHAT THEN [OF] <THE> PETER HAS BECOME. 18At daybreak there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.
19HEROD THEN HAVING SOUGHT AFTER HIM AND NOT HAVING FOUND [HIM] HAVING EXAMINED THE GUARDS HE COMMANDED [THEM] TO BE LED AWAY [TO DEATH], AND HAVING GONE DOWN FROM <THE> JUDEA TO <THE> CAESAREA HE WAS STAYING [THERE]. 19After Herod had searched for him unsuccessfully, he examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent some time there.
20HE WAS NOW <THE> HEROD FURIOUSLY ANGRY WITH [THE] TYRIANS AND SIDONIANS; WITH ONE ACCORD THEN THEY WERE COMING TO HIM AND HAVING GAINED BLASTUS WHO [WAS] OVER THE BEDCHAMBER OF THE KING THEY WERE SEEKING PEACE, BECAUSE OF <THE> BEING NOURISHED THEIR <THE> REGION BY THE KING’S. The Death of Herod 20Now Herod was in a furious dispute*NoteCloseOr had become furious with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they convened before him. Having secured the support of Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their region depended on the king’s country for food.
21ON THE APPOINTED NOW DAY <THE> HEROD HAVING PUT ON APPAREL ROYAL AND HAVING SAT ON THE THRONE WAS MAKING AN ADDRESS TO THEM. 21On the appointed day, Herod donned his royal robes, sat on his throne, and addressed the people.
22<THE> AND THE PEOPLE WERE CRYING OUT; OF A GOD [THIS IS THE] VOICE AND NOT OF A MAN! 22And they began to shout, “This is the voice of a god, not a man! ”
23IMMEDIATELY THEN STRUCK HIM AN ANGEL OF [THE] LORD IN RETURN FOR THAT NOT HE GAVE THE GLORY <THE> TO GOD, AND HAVING BEEN EATEN BY WORMS HE BREATHED HIS LAST. 23Immediately because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
24<THE> BUT THE WORD <THE> OF GOD WAS CONTINUING TO GROW AND WAS BEING MULTIPLIED. 24But the word of God continued to spread and multiply.
25BARNABAS THEN AND SAUL RETURNED TO JERUSALEM HAVING FULFILLED THE MISSION, HAVING TAKEN WITH [THEM] AND JOHN THE [ONE] HAVING BEEN CALLED MARK. 25When Barnabas and Saul had fulfilled their mission to Jerusalem, they returned,*NoteCloseOr had fulfilled their mission, they returned to Jerusalem; NE and TR had fulfilled their mission, they returned from Jerusalem bringing with them John, also called Mark.
