25BARNABAS THEN AND SAUL RETURNED TO JERUSALEM HAVING FULFILLED THE MISSION, HAVING TAKEN WITH [THEM] AND JOHN THE [ONE] HAVING BEEN CALLED MARK. 25When Barnabas and Saul had fulfilled their mission to Jerusalem, they returned,*NoteCloseOr had fulfilled their mission, they returned to Jerusalem; NE and TR had fulfilled their mission, they returned from Jerusalem bringing with them John, also called Mark.
1THERE WERE NOW SOME IN ANTIOCH IN WHAT IS [THE] CHURCH PROPHETS AND TEACHERS, <THE> BOTH BARNABAS AND SIMEON WHO IS BEING CALLED NIGER AND LUCIUS THE CYRENIAN, MANAEN ALSO — WITH HEROD THE TETRARCH BROUGHT UP — AND SAUL. Paul’s First Missionary Journey Begins (Acts 15:36–41; Acts 18:23–28) 1Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch and Saul.
2AS WERE MINISTERING NOW THEY TO THE LORD AND FASTING SAID THE SPIRIT <THE> HOLY; DO SET APART THEN TO ME <THE> BOTH BARNABAS AND <THE> SAUL FOR THE WORK TO WHICH I HAVE CALLED THEM. 2While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. ”
3THEN HAVING FASTED AND HAVING PRAYED AND HAVING LAID THE HANDS ON THEM THEY SENT [THEM] OFF. 3And after they had fasted and prayed, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
4THEY THEMSELVES INDEED THEREFORE HAVING BEEN SENT FORTH BY OF THE HOLY THE SPIRIT WENT DOWN TO <THE> SELEUCIA, FROM THERE THEN THEY SAILED TO <THE> CYPRUS. On Cyprus 4So Barnabas and Saul, sent forth by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.
5AND HAVING COME INTO SALAMIS THEY WERE PROCLAIMING THE WORD <THE> OF GOD IN THE SYNAGOGUES OF THE JEWS; THEY HAD NOW ALSO JOHN [AS] A HELPER. 5When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. And John was with them as their helper.
6HAVING PASSED THROUGH NOW ALL THE ISLAND AS FAR AS PAPHOS THEY FOUND A MAN — A CERTAIN MAGICIAN A FALSE PROPHET JEWISH — WHOSE NAME OF BAR-JESUS, 6They traveled through the whole island as far as Paphos, where they found a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,
7WHO WAS WITH THE PROCONSUL SERGIUS PAULUS, MAN AN INTELLIGENT. HE HAVING CALLED TO [HIM] BARNABAS AND SAUL DESIRED TO HEAR THE WORD <THE> OF GOD. 7an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, a man of intelligence, summoned Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God.
8WAS OPPOSING HOWEVER TO THEM ELYMAS THE MAGICIAN — THUS FOR MEANS THE NAME OF HIM — SEEKING TO TURN AWAY THE PROCONSUL FROM THE FAITH. 8But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith.
9SAUL THEN <THE> ALSO [CALLED] PAUL HAVING BEEN FILLED [THE] SPIRIT HOLY AND HAVING LOOKED INTENTLY UPON HIM 9Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked directly at Elymas
10SAID; O FULL OF ALL DECEIT AND ALL CRAFT, SON OF [THE] DEVIL, ENEMY OF ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS, NOT WILL YOU CEASE PERVERTING THE WAYS OF THE LORD <THE> UPRIGHT? 10and said, “O child of the devil and enemy of all righteousness, you are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery! Will you never stop perverting the straight ways of the Lord?
11AND NOW BEHOLD [THE] HAND <THE> OF THE LORD [IS] UPON YOU, AND YOU WILL BE BLIND NOT SEEING THE SUN DURING A SEASON. IMMEDIATELY THEN DESCENDED UPON HIM MIST AND DARKNESS, AND GOING ABOUT HE WAS SEEKING ONE TO LEAD BY HAND. 11Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and for a time you will be blind and unable to see the light of the sun. ” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
12THEN HAVING SEEN THE PROCONSUL THAT HAVING HAPPENED HE BELIEVED BEING ASTONISHED AT THE TEACHING OF THE LORD. 12When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord.
13HAVING SAILED THEN FROM <THE> PAPHOS [WITH] THOSE AROUND [HIM] <THE> PAUL CAME TO PERGA <THE> OF PAMPHYLIA. JOHN HOWEVER HAVING DEPARTED FROM THEM HE RETURNED TO JERUSALEM. In Pisidian Antioch 13After setting sail from Paphos, Paul and his companions came to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.
14THEY THEMSELVES NOW HAVING PASSED THROUGH FROM <THE> PERGA CAME TO ANTIOCH <THE> PISIDIA, AND HAVING GONE INTO THE SYNAGOGUE ON THE DAY OF THE SABBATHS THEY SAT DOWN. 14And from Perga, they traveled inland to Pisidian Antioch, where they entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and sat down.
15AFTER THEN THE READING OF THE LAW AND OF THE PROPHETS SENT THE RULERS OF THE SYNAGOGUE TO THEM SAYING; MEN BROTHERS, IF ANY THERE IS AMONG YOU A WORD OF EXHORTATION TOWARD THE PEOPLE, DO SPEAK. 15After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue leaders sent word to them “Brothers, if you have a word of encouragement for the people, please speak. ”
16HAVING RISEN UP THEN PAUL AND HAVING MADE A SIGN WITH THE HAND HE SAID; MEN ISRAELITES AND YOU WHO [ARE] FEARING <THE> GOD, DO LISTEN. 16Paul stood up, motioned with his hand, and began to speak: “Men of Israel and you Gentiles who fear God, listen to me!
17THE GOD OF THE PEOPLE THIS OF ISRAEL CHOSE THE FATHERS OF US AND THE PEOPLE EXALTED IN THE SOJOURN IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND WITH ARM UPLIFTED BROUGHT THEM OUT OF IT; 17The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers. He made them into a great people during their stay in Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out of that land.
18AND OF ABOUT FORTY YEARS FOR A PERIOD HE ENDURED THE WAYS OF THEM IN THE WILDERNESS, 18He endured their conduct for about forty years in the wilderness.
19AND HAVING DESTROYED NATIONS SEVEN IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN HE GAVE AS AN INHERITANCE TO THEM THE LAND OF THEM — 19And having vanquished seven nations in Canaan, He gave their land to His people as an inheritance.
20DURING YEARS FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY; AND AFTER THESE THINGS HE GAVE [THEM] JUDGES UNTIL SAMUEL THE PROPHET; 20All this took about 450. years. After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet.
21THEN THEY ASKED FOR A KING, AND GAVE TO THEM <THE> GOD <THE> SAUL SON OF KISH, A MAN OF [THE] TRIBE OF BENJAMIN, YEARS FORTY; 21Then the people asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, from the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years.
22AND HAVING REMOVED HIM HE RAISED UP <THE> DAVID TO THEM AS KING, TO WHOM ALSO HE SAID HAVING CARRIED WITNESS: I HAVE FOUND DAVID THE [SON OF] JESSE A MAN ACCORDING TO THE HEART OF MINE, WHO WILL DO ALL THE WILL OF MINE. 22After removing Saul, He raised up David as their king and testified about him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after My own heart; he will carry out My will in its entirety.’*NoteCloseSee 1 Samuel 13:14.
23OF THIS [MAN] THE GOD OF THE SEED ACCORDING TO PROMISE HAS BROUGHT <THE> TO ISRAEL [THE] SAVIOR JESUS — 23From the descendants of this man, God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as He promised.
24WHEN WAS PROCLAIMING JOHN BEFORE [THE] FACE OF THE COMING OF HIM A BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL. 24Before the arrival of Jesus, John preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
25WHILE THEN WAS FULFILLING <THE> JOHN THE COURSE HE WAS SAYING; WHOM ME MYSELF DO YOU SUPPOSE TO BE? NOT AM [HE] I MYSELF; BUT BEHOLD HE COMES AFTER ME MYSELF OF WHOM NOT I AM WORTHY THE SANDAL OF THE FEET TO UNTIE. 25As John was completing his course, he said, ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not that One. But there is One coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’*NoteCloseLuke 3:16; see also Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:7, and John 1:27.
26MEN BROTHERS, SONS OF [THE] FAMILY OF ABRAHAM AND YOU WHO [ARE] AMONG YOU FEARING <THE> GOD, TO US THE MESSAGE OF THE SALVATION THIS WAS SENT OUT. 26Brothers, children of Abraham, and you Gentiles who fear God, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent.
27THOSE FOR DWELLING IN JERUSALEM AND THE RULERS OF THEM HIM NOT HAVING KNOWN AND THE VOICES OF THE PROPHETS THAT ON EVERY SABBATH ARE BEING READ, HAVING CONDEMNED [HIM] THEY FULFILLED [THEM]; 27The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.
28AND NO CAUSE OF DEATH HAVING FOUND THEY BEGGED PILATE TO EXECUTE HIM. 28And though they found no ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have Him executed.
29WHEN THEN THEY HAD FINISHED ALL THE [THINGS] ABOUT HIM WRITTEN, HAVING TAKEN [HIM] DOWN FROM THE TREE THEY PUT [HIM] IN A TOMB. 29When they had carried out all that was written about Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.
31WHO APPEARED FOR DAYS MANY TO THOSE HAVING COME UP WITH HIM FROM <THE> GALILEE TO JERUSALEM, WHO NOW ARE WITNESSES OF HIM TO THE PEOPLE. 31and for many days He was seen by those who had accompanied Him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now His witnesses to our people.
32AND WE OURSELVES TO YOU EVANGELISE THE TO THE FATHERS PROMISE HAVING BEEN MADE, 32And now we proclaim to you the good news What God promised our fathers
33THAT THIS <THE> GOD HAS FULFILLED TO THE CHILDREN OF THEM TO US HAVING RAISED UP JESUS, AS ALSO IN THE PSALM IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN IN THE SECOND SON OF MINE ARE YOU YOURSELF, I MYSELF TODAY HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.’ 33He has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus As it is written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son; today I have become Your Father*NoteClosePsalm 2:7; literally today I have begotten You
34FOR THEN HE RAISED HIM OUT FROM [THE] DEAD NO MORE BEING ABOUT TO RETURN TO DECAY, THUS HE HAS SPOKEN THAT I WILL GIVE TO YOU THE HOLY [BLESSINGS] OF DAVID THE SURE [BLESSINGS].’ 34In fact, God raised Him from the dead, never to see decay. As He has said: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’*NoteCloseLiterally I will give you the holy, the trustworthy of David; Isaiah 55:3
35THEREFORE ALSO IN ANOTHER HE SAYS: NOT YOU WILL ALLOW THE HOLY ONE OF YOU TO SEE DECAY.’ 35So also, He says in another Psalm: ‘You will not let Your Holy One see decay.’*NoteClosePsalm 16:10
36DAVID INDEED FOR IN HIS OWN GENERATION HAVING SERVED THE <THE> OF GOD PURPOSE HE FELL ASLEEP AND HE WAS ADDED TO THE FATHERS OF HIM AND SAW DECAY; 36For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep. His body was buried with his fathers and saw decay.
37THE [ONE] HOWEVER <THE> GOD RAISED UP NOT DID SEE DECAY. 37But the One whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.
38KNOWN THEREFORE IT SHOULD BE TO YOU, MEN BROTHERS, THAT THROUGH THIS ONE TO YOU FORGIVENESS OF SINS IS PROCLAIMED; 38Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.
39AND FROM ALL THINGS FROM WHICH NOT YOU WERE ABLE IN THE LAW OF MOSES TO BE JUSTIFIED, (39) IN HIM EVERYONE WHO IS BELIEVING IS JUSTIFIED. 39Through Him everyone who believes is justified from everything from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
40DO TAKE HEED THEREFORE LEST MAY COME ABOUT UPON YOU THAT SAID IN THE PROPHETS: 40Watch out, then, that what was spoken by the prophets does not happen to you:
41BEHOLD! YOU SCOFFERS, AND DO WONDER AND DO PERISH FOR A WORK AM WORKING I MYSELF IN THE DAYS OF YOU, A WORK THAT CERTAINLY NOT YOU MAY BELIEVE EVEN IF ONE SHALL DECLARE IT TO YOU.’ 41‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish! For I am doing a work in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.’*NoteCloseHabakkuk 1:5 (see also LXX) ”
42WHEN ARE DEPARTING THEN THEY FROM THE SYNAGOGUE OF THE JEWS WERE BEGGING THE GENTILES ON THE NEXT SABBATH TO BE SPOKEN TO THEM <THE> DECLARATIONS THESE. A Light for the Gentiles (Isaiah 49:1–6) 42As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people urged them to continue this message on the next Sabbath.
43WHEN WAS RELEASING THEN THE SYNAGOGUE FOLLOWED MANY OF THE JEWS AND OF THE WORSHIPPING CONVERTS <THE> AFTER PAUL AND <THE> AFTER BARNABAS, WHO SPEAKING TO THEM WERE PERSUADING THEM TO CONTINUE IN THE GRACE <THE> OF GOD. 43After the synagogue was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.
44ON THE NOW COMING SABBATH ALMOST ALL THE CITY WAS GATHERED TOGETHER TO HEAR THE WORD <THE> OF THE LORD. 44On the following Sabbath, nearly the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
45HAVING SEEN HOWEVER THE JEWS THE CROWDS THEY WERE FILLED WITH JEALOUSY AND WERE CONTRADICTING THE [THINGS] BY <THE> PAUL SPOKEN DENYING AND DENIGRATING [HIM]. 45But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and they blasphemously contradicted what Paul was saying.
46HAVING SPOKEN BOLDLY ALSO <THE> PAUL AND <THE> BARNABAS SAID; TO YOU IT WAS NECESSARY FIRST TO BE SPOKEN THE WORD <THE> OF GOD; BUT SINCE NOW YOU THRUST AWAY IT AND NOT WORTHY YOU JUDGE YOURSELVES <THE> OF ETERNAL LIFE, BEHOLD WE ARE TURNING TO THE GENTILES. 46Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. But since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.
47THUS FOR HAS COMMANDED US THE LORD: I HAVE SET YOU FOR A LIGHT OF [THE] GENTILES <THE> TO BE YOU FOR SALVATION UNTIL [THE] UTTERMOST PART OF THE EARTH.’ 47For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’*NoteCloseIsaiah 49:6 ”
48HEARING [IT] THEN THE GENTILES WERE REJOICING AND THEY WERE GLORIFYING THE WORD OF THE LORD AND THEY BELIEVED AS MANY AS WERE APPOINTED TO LIFE ETERNAL. 48When the Gentiles heard this, they rejoiced and glorified the word of the Lord, and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
49WAS CARRIED THEN THE WORD OF THE LORD THROUGH ALL THE REGION. 49And the word of the Lord spread throughout that region.
50THE BUT JEWS INCITED THE WORSHIPPING WOMEN AND <THE>[THOSE] PROMINENT AND THE PRINCIPALS OF THE CITY AND THEY STIRRED UP A PERSECUTION AGAINST <THE> PAUL AND <THE> BARNABAS AND EXPELLED THEM FROM THE DISTRICT OF THEM. 50The Jews, however, incited the religious women of prominence and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and drove them out of their district.
51<THE> BUT HAVING SHAKEN OFF THE DUST OF THE FEET OF THEM AGAINST THEM THEY WENT TO ICONIUM. 51So they shook the dust off their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.
52<THE> AND THE DISCIPLES WERE FILLED WITH JOY AND [THE] SPIRIT HOLY. 52And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
