21TO HIM [BE] THE GLORY IN THE CHURCH AND IN CHRIST JESUS TO ALL THE GENERATIONS OF THE AGE OF THE AGES, AMEN. 21to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
1EXHORT THEREFORE YOU I MYSELF THE PRISONER IN [THE] LORD WORTHILY TO WALK OF THE CALLING TO WHICH YOU WERE CALLED, Unity in the Body (Psalm 133:1–3; 1 Corinthians 1:10–17) 1As a prisoner in the Lord, then, I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have received:
2WITH ALL HUMILITY AND GENTLENESS, WITH PATIENCE, BEARING WITH ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE, 2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
3BEING DILIGENT TO KEEP THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT IN THE BOND <THE> OF PEACE, 3and with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
4ONE BODY AND ONE SPIRIT EVEN AS ALSO YOU WERE CALLED INTO ONE HOPE OF THE CALLING OF YOU; 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;
6ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL, WHO [IS] OVER ALL AND THROUGH ALL [TIMES] AND IN ALL IN YOU. 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7ONE NOW TO EACH OF US HAS BEEN GIVEN <THE> GRACE ACCORDING TO THE MEASURE OF THE GIFT <THE> OF CHRIST. 7Now to each one of us grace has been given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8THEREFORE IT SAYS: HAVING ASCENDED ON HIGH HE LED CAPTIVE CAPTIVITY, AND HE GAVE GIFTS <THE> TO MEN. 8This is why it says:*NoteCloseOr He says “When He ascended on high, He led captives away, and gave gifts to men.”*NoteClosePsalm 68:18
9<THE> AND HE ASCENDED, WHAT IS [THIS] ONLY EXCEPT THAT ALSO HE DESCENDED FIRST INTO THE LOWER REGIONS OF THE EARTH? 9What does “He ascended” mean, except that He also descended*NoteCloseBYZ and TR except that He also descended first to the lower parts of the earth?
10THE [ONE] HAVING DESCENDED [THE] SAME IS ALSO [ONE] HAVING ASCENDED ABOVE ALL THE HEAVENS, SO THAT HE MAY FILL <THE> ALL THINGS. 10He who descended is the very One who ascended above all the heavens, in order to fill all things.
11AND HE HIMSELF GAVE SOME INDEED [TO BE] APOSTLES, SOME HOWEVER PROPHETS, SOME HOWEVER EVANGELISTS, SOME HOWEVER SHEPHERDS AND TEACHERS, 11And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
12TOWARD THE PERFECTING OF THE SAINTS FOR [THE] WORK OF MINISTRY, FOR [THE] BUILDING UP OF THE BODY <THE> OF CHRIST; 12to equip the saints for works of ministry and to build up the body of Christ,
13UNTIL WE MAY ATTAIN <THE> ALL TO THE UNITY OF THE FAITH AND OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SON <THE> OF GOD, UNTO A MAN A COMPLETE, TO [THE] MEASURE OF [THE] STATURE OF THE FULLNESS <THE> OF CHRIST; 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ.
14SO THAT NO LONGER WE MAY BE INFANTS BEING TOSSED BY WAVES AND BEING CARRIED ABOUT BY EVERY WIND <THE> OF TEACHING IN THE CUNNING <THE> OF MEN IN CRAFTINESS WITH A VIEW TO THE SCHEMING <THE> OF DECEIT, 14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming.
15SPEAKING THE TRUTH HOWEVER IN LOVE WE MAY GROW UP INTO HIM <THE> IN ALL THINGS WHO IS THE HEAD, <THE> CHRIST 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head.
16FROM WHOM ALL THE BODY BEING JOINED TOGETHER AND BEING HELD TOGETHER THROUGH EVERY LIGAMENT OF [ITS] SUPPLY ACCORDING TO [THE] WORKING IN [THE] MEASURE INDIVIDUAL OF EACH PART THE INCREASE OF THE BODY MAKES FOR ITSELF TO [THE] BUILDING UP OF ITSELF IN LOVE. 16From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part.
17THIS THEREFORE I SAY AND I TESTIFY IN [THE] LORD NO LONGER [ARE] YOU TO WALK EVEN AS ALSO THE REST OF GENTILES ARE WALKING IN [THE] FUTILITY OF THE MIND OF THEM, New Life in Christ (Colossians 3:1–17) 17So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.
18DARKENED IN THE UNDERSTANDING BEING ALIENATED FROM THE LIFE <THE> OF GOD BECAUSE OF THE IGNORANCE WHICH IS BEING IN THEM, ON ACCOUNT OF THE HARDNESS OF THE HEART OF THEM; 18They are darkened in their understanding and alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.
19WHO HAVING CAST OFF ALL FEELING THEMSELVES THEY GAVE UP <THE> TO SENSUALITY FOR [THE] WORKING OF IMPURITY ALL WITH GREEDINESS. 19Having lost all sense of shame, they have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity, with a craving for more.
20YOU YOURSELVES HOWEVER NOT THIS WAY LEARNED <THE> CHRIST, 20But this is not the way you came to know Christ.
21IF INDEED HIM YOU HAVE HEARD AND IN HIM WERE TAUGHT, EVEN AS IS [THE] TRUTH IN <THE> JESUS, 21Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him— in keeping with the truth that is in Jesus—
22ARE TO HAVE PUT OFF YOU CONCERNING THE FORMER WAY OF LIFE THE OLD MAN WHICH IS BEING CORRUPTED ACCORDING TO [ITS] DESIRES <THE> OF DECEIT, 22to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
24AND TO HAVE PUT ON THE NEW MAN <THE> ACCORDING TO GOD HAVING BEEN CREATED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS <THE> OF TRUTH. 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
25THEREFORE HAVING PUT OFF <THE> FALSEHOOD DO SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE WITH THE NEIGHBOUR OF HIM, BECAUSE WE ARE OF ONE ANOTHER MEMBERS. 25Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one another.
26DO BE ANGRY AND YET NOT DO SIN; THE SUN NOT SHOULD SET UPON THE ANGER OF YOU; 26“Be angry, yet do not sin.”*NoteCloseOr “In your anger do not sin.” Psalm 4:4 Do not let the sun set upon your anger,
28WHO IS STEALING NO LONGER HE SHOULD STEAL, RATHER HOWEVER HE SHOULD TOIL WORKING <THE> WITH [THEIR] OWN HANDS WHAT [IS] GOOD, SO THAT HE MAY HAVE [SOMETHING] TO IMPART TO THE [ONE] NEED HAVING. 28He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need.
29ANY WORD UNWHOLESOME OUT OF THE MOUTH OF YOU NOT SHOULD GO FORTH BUT IF ANY GOOD FOR EDIFICATION OF THE NEED, SO THAT IT SHALL GIVE GRACE TO THOSE HEARING. 29Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen.
30AND NOT DO GRIEVE THE SPIRIT <THE> HOLY <THE> OF GOD IN WHOM YOU WERE SEALED FOR [THE] DAY OF REDEMPTION. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31ALL BITTERNESS AND RAGE AND ANGER AND CLAMOR AND SLANDER SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOU ALONG WITH ALL MALICE. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice.
32DO BE NOW TO ONE ANOTHER KIND, TENDER-HEARTED, FORGIVING EACH OTHER EVEN AS ALSO <THE> GOD IN CHRIST FORGAVE YOU. 32Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.
