10AND MOSES AND AARON THEY DID <OBJ.> ALL THE WONDERS <THE> THESE <TO> BEFORE PHARAOH AND HE MADE STRONG YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] HEART OF PHARAOH AND NOT HE LET GO <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM LAND HIS 10Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the LORD hardened*NoteCloseOr stiffened or strengthened Pharaoh’s heart so that he would not let the Israelites go out of his land.
1AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES AND TO AARON IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT <TO> SAYING The First Passover (Numbers 9:1–14) 1Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,
2THE MONTH <THE> THIS FOR <THE> YOU [WILL BE THE] BEGINNING OF MONTHS [WILL BE] FIRST IT FOR <THE> YOU OF [THE] MONTHS OF THE YEAR 2“This month is the beginning of months for you; it shall be the first month of your year.
3SPEAK TO ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL <TO> SAYING ON THE TEN OF THE MONTH <THE> THIS SO THEY MAY TAKE FOR <THE> THEMSELVES EVERYONE A LAMB FOR A HOUSEHOLD OF FATHERS A LAMB FOR THE HOUSEHOLD 3Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man must select a lamb*NoteCloseThe Hebrew word can mean lamb or kid; also in verses 4 and 5. for his family, one per household.
4AND IF IT WILL BE [TOO] SMALL THE HOUSEHOLD FOR BEING FOR A LAMB AND HE WILL TAKE HE AND NEIGHBOR HIS <THE> NEAR TO HOUSE HIS BY [THE] NUMBER OF PEOPLE EACH ONE TO [THE] MOUTH OF FOOD HIS YOU WILL ESTIMATE ON THE LAMB 4If the household is too small for a whole lamb, they are to share with the nearest neighbor based on the number of people, and apportion the lamb accordingly.
5A LAMB UNBLEMISHED MALE A SON OF A YEAR IT WILL BE FOR <THE> YOU ONE OF THE LAMBS AND ONE OF THE GOATS YOU WILL TAKE 5Your lamb must be an unblemished year-old male, and you may take it from the sheep or the goats.
6AND IT WILL BE FOR <THE> YOU FOR SAFEKEEPING UNTIL [THE] FOUR- TEEN DAY OF THE MONTH <THE> THIS AND THEY WILL SLAUGHTER <OBJ.> IT ALL [THE] ASSEMBLY OF [THE] CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL BETWEEN THE TWO EVENINGS 6You must keep it until the fourteenth day of the month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel will slaughter the animals at twilight.*NoteCloseHebrew between the two evenings
7AND THEY WILL TAKE SOME OF THE BLOOD AND THEY WILL PUT [IT] ON [THE] TWO THE DOORPOSTS AND ON THE LINTELS ON THE HOUSES WHICH THEY WILL EAT <OBJ.> IT IN <THE> THEM 7They are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes*NoteCloseLiterally on the two doorposts and on the lintel; similarly in verses 22 and 23 of the houses where they eat the lambs
8AND THEY WILL EAT <OBJ.> THE MEAT IN THE NIGHT <THE> THIS ROASTED OF FIRE AND UNLEAVENED BREAD<S> WITH BITTER HERBS THEY WILL EAT IT 8They are to eat the meat that night, roasted over the fire, along with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
9MAY NOT YOU EAT ANY OF IT RAW AND BOILED BEING BOILED IN <THE> WATER THAT EXCEPT ROASTED OF FIRE HEAD ITS WITH LEGS ITS AND WITH ENTRAILS ITS 9Do not eat any of the meat raw or cooked in boiling water, but only roasted over the fire— its head and legs and inner parts.
10AND NOT YOU WILL LEAVE OVER ANY OF IT UNTIL MORNING AND WHAT IS LEFT OVER OF IT UNTIL MORNING WITH <THE> FIRE YOU WILL BURN 10Do not leave any of it until morning; before the morning you must burn up any part that is left over.
11AND THUS YOU WILL EAT <OBJ.> IT LOINS YOUR GIRDED SANDALS YOUR ON FEET YOUR AND STAFF YOUR IN HAND YOUR AND YOU WILL EAT <OBJ.> IT IN HASTE [IS] A PASSOVER IT TO YAHWEH 11This is how you are to eat it: You must be fully dressed for travel,*NoteCloseLiterally Gird up your loins with your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. You are to eat in haste; it is the LORD’s Passover.
12AND I WILL PASS IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT IN THE NIGHT <THE> THIS AND I WILL STRIKE EVERY FIRSTBORN IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT FROM HUMANKIND AND UNTO LIVESTOCK AND ON ALL [THE] GODS OF EGYPT I WILL DO ACTS OF JUDGMENT I [AM] YAHWEH 12On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn male both man and beast, and I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.
13AND IT WILL BECOME THE BLOOD FOR <THE> YOU <INTO> A SIGN ON THE HOUSES WHERE YOU [ARE] THERE AND I WILL SEE <OBJ.> THE BLOOD AND I WILL PASS OVER OVER YOU AND NOT IT WILL BE AMONG <THE> YOU A PLAGUE FOR DESTRUCTION WHEN STRIKE I IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 13The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a sign; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will fall on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
14AND IT WILL BECOME THE DAY <THE> THIS FOR <THE> YOU <INTO> A MEMORIAL AND YOU WILL CELEBRATE A FESTIVAL <OBJ.> IT A FESTIVAL OF YAHWEH TO GENERATIONS YOUR A STATUTE OF PERPETUITY YOU WILL CELEBRATE AS A FESTIVAL IT The Feast of Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:4–8; Numbers 28:16–25; Deuteronomy 16:1–8) 14And this day will be a memorial for you, and you are to celebrate it as a feast to the LORD, as a permanent statute for the generations to come.
15SEVEN DAYS UNLEAVENED BREAD<S> YOU WILL EAT SURELY ON THE DAY <THE> FIRST YOU WILL REMOVE LEAVEN FROM HOUSES YOUR FOR ANY [ONE WHO] EATS LEAVEN AND HE WILL BE CUT OFF THE PERSON <THE> THAT FROM ISRAEL FROM [THE] DAY <THE> FIRST UNTIL [THE] DAY <THE> SEVENTH 15For seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the first day you are to remove the leaven from your houses. Whoever eats anything leavened from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel.
16AND [WILL BE] ON THE DAY <THE> FIRST A CONVOCATION OF HOLINESS AND ON THE DAY <THE> SEVENTH A CONVOCATION OF HOLINESS IT WILL BE TO <THE> YOU ANY WORK NOT IT WILL BE DONE ON <THE> THEM ONLY [THAT] WHICH IT WILL BE EATEN BY EVERY PERSON IT TO ONLY IT IT WILL BE DONE BY <THE> YOU 16On the first day you are to hold a sacred assembly, and another on the seventh day. You must not do any work on those days, except to prepare the meals that is all you may do
17AND YOU WILL KEEP <OBJ.> THE UNLEAVENED BREAD<S> FOR ON [THE] SUBSTANCE OF THE DAY <THE> THIS I BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> HOSTS YOUR FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND YOU WILL KEEP <OBJ.> THE DAY <THE> THIS TO GENERATIONS YOUR A STATUTE OF PERPETUITY 17So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread,*NoteCloseThat is, the seven-day period after the Passover during which no leaven may be eaten for on this very day I brought your divisions out of the land of Egypt. You must keep this day as a permanent statute for the generations to come.
18IN THE FIRST [MONTH] ON [THE] FOUR- TEEN DAY OF THE MONTH IN THE EVENING YOU WILL EAT UNLEAVENED BREAD<S> UNTIL [THE] DAY <THE> ONE AND TWENTY OF THE MONTH IN THE EVENING 18In the first month you are to eat unleavened bread, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day.
19SEVEN DAYS LEAVEN NOT IT WILL BE FOUND IN HOUSES YOUR FOR ANY [ONE WHO] EATS A THING LEAVENED AND HE WILL BE CUT OFF THE PERSON <THE> THAT FROM [THE] CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL IN THE SOJOURNER AND IN [THE] NATIVE-BORN OF THE LAND 19For seven days there must be no leaven found in your houses. If anyone eats something leavened, that person, whether a foreigner or native of the land, must be cut off from the congregation of Israel.
20ANY THING LEAVENED NOT YOU WILL EAT IN ALL DWELLING PLACES YOUR YOU WILL EAT UNLEAVENED BREAD<S> 20You are not to eat anything leavened; eat unleavened bread in all your homes.”
21AND HE SUMMONED MOSES <TO> ALL [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL AND HE SAID TO THEM DRAW AND TAKE FOR <THE> YOURSELVES SHEEP TO CLANS YOUR AND SLAUGHTER THE PASSOVER 21Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and told them, “Go at once and select for yourselves a lamb for each family, and slaughter the Passover lamb.
22AND YOU WILL TAKE A BUNCH OF HYSSOP AND YOU WILL DIP [IT] IN THE BLOOD WHICH [IS] IN THE BASIN AND YOU WILL MAKE TOUCH <TO> THE LINTELS AND <TO> [THE] TWO THE DOORPOSTS SOME OF THE BLOOD WHICH [IS] IN THE BASIN AND YOU NOT YOU WILL GO OUT ANYONE FROM [THE] DOOR OF HOUSE HIS UNTIL MORNING 22Take a cluster of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin, and brush the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out the door of his house until morning.
23AND HE WILL PASS THROUGH YAHWEH TO STRIKE <OBJ.> EGYPT AND HE WILL SEE <OBJ.> THE BLOOD ON THE LINTELS AND ON [THE] TWO THE DOORPOSTS AND HE WILL PASS OVER YAHWEH OVER THE DOORWAY AND NOT HE WILL PERMIT THE DESTROYER TO COME INTO HOUSES YOUR TO STRIKE [YOU] 23When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians, He will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway; so He will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.
24AND YOU WILL KEEP <OBJ.> THE WORD <THE> THIS TO A DECREE FOR YOURSELF AND FOR CHILDREN YOUR UNTIL PERPETUITY 24And you are to keep this command as a permanent statute for you and your descendants.
25AND IT WILL BE THAT YOU WILL COME INTO THE LAND WHICH HE WILL GIVE YAHWEH TO <THE> YOU JUST AS HE SAID AND YOU WILL KEEP <OBJ.> THE SERVICE <THE> THIS 25When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as He promised, you are to keep this service.
26AND IT WILL BE THAT THEY WILL SAY TO YOU CHILDREN YOUR WHAT? [IS] THE SERVICE <THE> THIS TO <THE> YOU 26When your children ask you, ‘What does this service mean to you?’
27AND YOU WILL SAY [IS] A SACRIFICE OF PASSOVER IT TO YAHWEH WHO HE PASSED OVER OVER [THE] HOUSES OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL IN EGYPT WHEN STRUCK HE <OBJ.> EGYPT AND <OBJ.> HOUSES OUR HE DELIVERED AND IT BOWED LOW THE PEOPLE AND THEY BOWED DOWN 27you are to reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when He struck down the Egyptians and spared our homes.’” Then the people bowed down and worshiped.
28AND THEY WENT AND THEY DID [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES AND AARON SO THEY DID 28And the Israelites went and did just what the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron.
29AND IT WAS IN [THE] MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND YAHWEH HE STRUCK EVERY FIRSTBORN IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT FROM [THE] FIRSTBORN OF PHARAOH WHO SAT ON THRONE HIS UNTO [THE] FIRSTBORN OF THE PRISONER WHO [WAS] IN [THE] HOUSE OF THE CISTERN AND EVERY FIRSTBORN OF LIVESTOCK The Tenth Plague: Death of the Firstborn 29Now at midnight the LORD struck down every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner in the dungeon, as well as all the firstborn among the livestock.
30AND HE AROSE PHARAOH NIGHT HE AND ALL SERVANTS HIS AND ALL EGYPT AND IT WAS A CRY GREAT IN EGYPT FOR THERE NOT [WAS] A HOUSE WHERE THERE NOT THERE [WAS] A DEAD [PERSON] 30During the night Pharaoh got up— he and all his officials and all the Egyptians— and there was loud wailing in Egypt; for there was no house without someone dead.
31AND HE SUMMONED <TO> MOSES AND <TO> AARON NIGHT AND HE SAID ARISE GO OUT FROM AMONG PEOPLE MY BOTH YOU AS WELL AS [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND GO SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH AS SAID YOU The Exodus Begins 31Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron by night and said, “Get up, leave my people, both you and the Israelites! Go, worship the LORD as you have requested.
32BOTH FLOCK[S] YOUR AS WELL AS HERD[S] YOUR TAKE JUST AS YOU SAID AND GO AND YOU WILL BLESS ALSO <OBJ.> ME 32Take your flocks and herds as well, just as you have said, and depart! And bless me also.”
33AND IT URGED EGYPT ON THE PEOPLE TO HURRY TO SEND AWAY THEM FROM THE LAND FOR THEY SAID ALL OF US [ARE] ABOUT TO DIE 33And in order to send them out of the land quickly, the Egyptians urged the people on. “For otherwise,” they said, “we are all going to die!”
34AND IT CARRIED OFF THE PEOPLE <OBJ.> DOUGH ITS BEFORE IT WAS LEAVENED KNEADING TROUGHS THEIR [WERE] BOUND UP IN CLOTHES THEIR ON SHOULDER THEIR 34So the people took their dough before it was leavened, carrying it on their shoulders in kneading bowls wrapped in clothing.
35AND [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL THEY DID ACCORDING TO [THE] WORD OF MOSES AND THEY ASKED FROM EGYPT ARTICLES OF SILVER AND ARTICLES OF GOLD AND CLOTHES 35Furthermore, the Israelites acted on Moses’ word and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold, and for clothing.
36AND YAHWEH HE GAVE <OBJ.> [THE] FAVOR OF THE PEOPLE IN [THE] EYES OF EGYPT AND THEY GRANTED [THE] REQUEST THEM AND THEY PLUNDERED <OBJ.> EGYPT 36And the LORD gave the people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that they granted their request. In this way they plundered the Egyptians.
37AND THEY SET OUT [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM RAMESES SUCCOTH TOWARDS [WERE] ABOUT SIX HUNDRED<S> THOUSAND FOOT SOLDIER[S] THE MEN <TO> APART FROM LITTLE ONE[S] 37The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Succoth*NoteCloseSuccoth means booths or shelters or tabernacles. with about 600,000 men on foot, besides women and children.
38AND ALSO A MIXED COMPANY NUMEROUS IT WENT UP WITH THEM AND FLOCK[S] AND HERD[S] LIVESTOCK NUMEROUS VERY 38And a mixed multitude also went up with them, along with great droves of livestock, both flocks and herds.
39AND THEY BAKED <OBJ.> THE DOUGH WHICH THEY HAD BROUGHT OUT FROM EGYPT BREAD CAKES UNLEAVENED BREAD<S> FOR NOT IT WAS LEAVENED FOR THEY HAD BEEN DRIVEN OUT FROM EGYPT AND NOT THEY HAD BEEN ABLE TO DELAY AND ALSO PROVISION[S] NOT THEY HAD MADE FOR <THE> THEMSELVES 39Since their dough had no leaven, the people baked what they had brought out of Egypt into unleavened loaves. For when they had been driven out of Egypt, they could not delay and had not prepared any provisions for themselves.
40AND [THE] DWELLING OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHICH THEY DWELT IN EGYPT [WAS] THIRTY YEAR[S] AND FOUR HUNDRED<S> YEAR[S] 40Now the duration of the Israelites’ stay in Egypt*NoteCloseMT; SP in Canaan and Egypt; LXX in Egypt and Canaan was 430 years.
41AND IT WAS FROM [THE] END OF THIRTY YEAR[S] AND FOUR HUNDRED<S> YEAR[S] AND IT WAS ON [THE] SUBSTANCE OF THE DAY <THE> THIS THEY WENT OUT ALL [THE] HOSTS OF YAHWEH FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 41At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the LORD’s divisions went out of the land of Egypt.
42[WAS] A NIGHT OF VIGIL<S> IT FOR YAHWEH TO BRING OUT THEM FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT IT THE NIGHT <THE> THIS FOR YAHWEH VIGIL<S> FOR ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO GENERATIONS THEIR 42Because the LORD kept a vigil that night to bring them out of the land of Egypt, this same night is to be a vigil to the LORD, to be observed by all the Israelites for the generations to come.
43AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES AND AARON THIS [IS] [THE] STATUTE OF THE PASSOVER ANY SON OF FOREIGNNESS NOT HE WILL EAT IN <THE> IT Instructions for the Passover 43And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute of the Passover: No foreigner is to eat of it.
44AND EVERY SLAVE OF ANYONE [THE] PURCHASE OF SILVER AND YOU WILL CIRCUMCISE <OBJ.> HIM THEN HE WILL EAT IN <THE> IT 44But any slave who has been purchased may eat of it, after you have circumcised him.
45A RESIDENT ALIEN AND A HIRED LABORER NOT HE WILL EAT IN <THE> IT 45A temporary resident or hired hand shall not eat the Passover.
46IN A HOUSE ONE IT WILL BE EATEN NOT YOU WILL BRING OUT FROM THE HOUSE ANY OF THE MEAT [THE] OUTSIDE TOWARDS AND A BONE NOT YOU WILL BREAK IN <THE> IT 46It must be eaten inside one house. You are not to take any of the meat outside the house, and you may not break any of the bones.
47ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL THEY WILL DO <OBJ.> IT 47The whole congregation of Israel must celebrate it.
48AND IF HE WILL SOJOURN WITH YOU A SOJOURNER AND HE WILL OBSERVE A PASSOVER TO YAHWEH HE WILL BE CIRCUMCISED OF HIM EVERY MALE AND THEN HE WILL DRAW NEAR TO OBSERVE IT AND HE WILL BE LIKE [THE] NATIVE-BORN OF THE LAND AND ANY UNCIRCUMCISED [MAN] NOT HE WILL EAT IN <THE> IT 48If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate the LORD’s Passover, all the males in the household must be circumcised then he may come near to celebrate it, and he shall be like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised man may eat of it.
49LAW ONE IT WILL BE[LONG] TO THE NATIVE-BORN AND TO THE SOJOURNER WHO SOJOURNS IN MIDST OF YOU 49The same law shall apply to both the native and the foreigner who resides among you.”
50AND THEY DID ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES AND <OBJ.> AARON SO THEY DID 50Then all the Israelites did this— they did just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron.
51AND IT WAS ON [THE] SUBSTANCE OF THE DAY <THE> THIS HE BROUGHT OUT YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT ON HOSTS THEIR 51And on that very day the LORD brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by their divisions.
