19AND WE SEE THAT NOT THEY WERE ABLE TO ENTER IN BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF. 19So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they were unable to enter.
1WE MAY FEAR THEREFORE OTHERWISE WHILE IS LEFT REMAINING [THE] PROMISE TO ENTER INTO THE REST OF HIM, MAY SEEM ANY OF YOU TO HAVE FALLEN SHORT. The Sabbath Rest (Genesis 2:1–3; Exodus 16:22–30) 1Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.
2AND FOR WE ARE EVANGELISED JUST AS ALSO THEY [WERE]; BUT NOT DID PROFIT THE MESSAGE <THE> OF [THEIR] HEARING THEM NOT UNITED WITH THE FAITH OF THOSE HAVING HEARD. 2For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.*NoteCloseLiterally not having been united in the faith of those who heard
3WE ENTER FOR INTO THE REST THOSE HAVING BELIEVED EVEN AS HE HAS SAID: SO I SWORE IN THE WRATH OF MINE; NOT WILL THEY ENTER INTO THE REST OF MINE; AND YET THE WORKS FROM [THE] FOUNDATION OF [THE] WORLD HAVE BEEN FINISHED. 3Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said: “So I swore on oath in My anger, They shall never enter My rest.’”*NoteClosePsalm 95:11; also in verse 5 And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
4HE HAS SPOKEN FOR SOMEWHERE CONCERNING THE SEVENTH [DAY] IN THIS WAY; AND RESTED <THE> GOD ON THE DAY <THE> SEVENTH FROM ALL THE WORKS OF HIM. 4For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”*NoteCloseGenesis 2:2
5AND IN THIS [PASSAGE] AGAIN; [NOT] WILL THEY ENTER INTO THE REST OF MINE. 5And again, as He says in the passage above: “They shall never enter My rest. ”
6SINCE THEREFORE IT REMAINS [FOR] SOME TO ENTER INTO IT AND THOSE FORMERLY HAVING BEEN EVANGELISED NOT THEY DID ENTER IN BECAUSE OF DISOBEDIENCE, 6Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
7AGAIN A CERTAIN HE APPOINTS DAY: TODAY, THROUGH DAVID SAYING: AFTER SO LONG A TIME, EVEN AS IT HAS BEEN PREDICTED, TODAY IF THE VOICE OF HIM YOU SHALL HEAR, NOT SHALL HARDEN THE HEARTS OF YOU. 7God again designated a certain day as “Today, ” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”*NoteClosePsalm 95:7–8
8IF FOR TO THEM JOSHUA GAVE REST, NOT THEN WOULD ABOUT ANOTHER WAS HE SPEAKING AFTER THIS DAY; 8For if Joshua had given them rest God would not have spoken later about another day.
9SO THEN THERE REMAINS A SABBATH REST FOR THE PEOPLE <THE> OF GOD. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
10THE [ONE] FOR HAVING ENTERED INTO THE REST OF HIM ALSO HE HIMSELF RESTED FROM THE WORKS OF HIM AS FROM <THE> [HIS] OWN <THE> GOD [DID]. 10For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.
11WE MAY BE DILIGENT THEREFORE TO ENTER INTO THAT [VERY] <THE> REST, SO THAT NOT BY THE SAME ANYONE EXAMPLE MAY FALL <THE> OF DISOBEDIENCE. 11Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.
12LIVING [IS] FOR THE WORD <THE> OF GOD AND ACTIVE AND SHARPER THAN ANY SWORD TWO-EDGED EVEN PENETRATING AS FAR AS [THE] DIVISION OF SOUL THEN AND SPIRIT, OF JOINTS AND ALSO MARROWS, AND ABLE TO JUDGE [THE] THOUGHTS AND INTENTIONS OF [THE] HEART; The Living Word (2 Timothy 3:10–17) 12For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
13AND NOT THERE IS CREATURE HIDDEN BEFORE HIM; ALL THINGS HOWEVER [ARE] UNCOVERED AND LAID BARE TO THE EYES OF HIM TO WHOM [IS] OUR <THE> RECKONING. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
14HAVING THEREFORE A HIGH PRIEST GREAT HAVING PASSED THROUGH THE HEAVENS, JESUS THE SON <THE> OF GOD, WE MAY HOLD FIRMLY <THE> TO [OUR] CONFESSION. 14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess.
15NOT FOR HAVE WE A HIGH PRIEST NOT BEING ABLE TO SYMPATHIZE WITH THE WEAKNESSES OF US, TEMPTED HOWEVER IN ALL THINGS BY [THE] SAME WAY WITHOUT SIN. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.
16WE MAY COME THEREFORE WITH BOLDNESS TO THE THRONE <THE> OF GRACE, SO THAT WE MAY RECEIVE MERCY AND GRACE MAY FIND FOR IN TIME OF NEED HELP. 16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
