Aaron and his sons are to tend the lamps before the LORD from evening until morning. This is to be a permanent statute for the Israelites for the generations to come. [’’]
1AND YOU BRING NEAR TO YOURSELF <OBJ.> AARON BROTHER YOUR AND <OBJ.> SONS HIS WITH HIM FROM AMONG [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO SERVE AS PRIEST HE TO <THE> ME AARON NADAB AND ABIHU ELEAZAR AND ITHAMAR [THE] SONS OF AARON Garments for the Priests 1“Next, have your brother Aaron brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar to serve Me as priests.
2AND YOU WILL MAKE GARMENTS OF HOLINESS FOR AARON BROTHER YOUR FOR GLORY AND FOR BEAUTY 2Make holy garments for your brother Aaron, to give him glory and splendor.
3AND YOU YOU WILL SPEAK TO ALL [PEOPLE] SKILLFUL OF HEART WHICH I HAVE FILLED IT A SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND THEY WILL MAKE <OBJ.> [THE] GARMENTS OF AARON TO CONSECRATE HIM TO SERVE AS PRIEST HE TO <THE> ME 3You are to instruct all the skilled craftsmen, whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, to make garments for Aaron’s consecration, so that he may serve Me as priest.
4AND THESE [ARE] THE GARMENTS WHICH THEY WILL MAKE A BREASTPIECE AND AN EPHOD AND A ROBE AND A TUNIC OF CHECKERED WORK A TURBAN AND A SASH AND THEY WILL MAKE GARMENTS OF HOLINESS FOR AARON BROTHER YOUR AND FOR SONS HIS TO SERVE AS PRIEST HE TO <THE> ME 4These are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban, and a sash. They are to make these holy garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so that they may serve Me as priests
5AND THEY THEY WILL TAKE <OBJ.> THE GOLD AND <OBJ.> THE VIOLET STUFF AND <OBJ.> THE PURPLE AND <OBJ.> [THE] SCARLET STUFF OF THE SCARLET AND <OBJ.> THE FINE LINEN 5They shall use gold, along with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen.
6AND THEY WILL MAKE <OBJ.> THE EPHOD GOLD VIOLET STUFF AND PURPLE SCARLET STUFF OF SCARLET AND FINE LINEN TWISTED [THE] WORK OF A SKILLFUL WORKER The Ephod (Exodus 39:1–7) 6They are to make the ephod of finely spun linen embroidered with gold, and with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn.
7TWO SHOULDER-PIECES JOINED IT WILL BE[LONG] TO <THE> IT TO [THE] TWO ENDS ITS AND IT WILL BE JOINED TOGETHER 7It shall have two shoulder pieces attached at two of its corners, so it can be fastened.
8AND [THE] GIRDLE OF EPHOD ITS WHICH [WILL BE] ON IT [WILL BE] LIKE WORKMANSHIP ITS FROM IT IT WILL BE GOLD VIOLET STUFF AND PURPLE AND SCARLET STUFF OF SCARLET AND FINE LINEN TWISTED 8And the skillfully woven waistband of the ephod must be of one piece, of the same workmanship— with gold, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and with finely spun linen.
9AND YOU WILL TAKE <OBJ.> TWO STONES OF ONYX AND YOU WILL ENGRAVE ON THEM [THE] NAMES OF [THE] SONS OF ISRAEL 9Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel:
10SIX OF NAMES THEIR [WILL BE] ON THE STONE <THE> ONE AND <OBJ.> [THE] NAMES OF THE SIX WHICH REMAIN OVER [WILL BE] ON THE STONE <THE> SECOND ACCORDING TO GENEALOGIES THEIR 10six of their names on one stone and the remaining six on the other in the order of their birth.
11[THE] WORK OF AN ENGRAVER OF STONE [THE] ENGRAVINGS OF A SEAL YOU WILL ENGRAVE <OBJ.> [THE] TWO THE STONES ON [THE] NAMES OF [THE] SONS OF ISRAEL SURROUNDED FILIGREE SETTINGS OF GOLD YOU WILL MAKE <OBJ.> THEM 11Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in gold filigree settings
12AND YOU WILL PUT <OBJ.> [THE] TWO THE STONES ON [THE] SHOULDER-PIECES OF THE EPHOD STONES OF REMINDER FOR [THE] SONS OF ISRAEL AND HE WILL BEAR AARON <OBJ.> NAMES THEIR <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH ON [THE] TWO SHOULDER-PIECES HIS TO A REMINDER 12Fasten both stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron is to bear their names on his two shoulders as a memorial before the LORD.
14AND TWO CHAINS OF GOLD PURE TWISTED CORDS YOU WILL MAKE <OBJ.> THEM A WORK OF CORDAGE AND YOU WILL PUT <OBJ.> [THE] CHAINS OF THE CORDS ON THE FILIGREE SETTINGS 14and two chains of pure gold, made of braided cord work; and attach these chains to the settings.
15AND YOU WILL MAKE A BREASTPIECE OF JUDGMENT [THE] WORK OF A SKILLFUL WORKER LIKE [THE] WORK OF [THE] EPHOD YOU WILL MAKE IT GOLD VIOLET STUFF AND PURPLE AND SCARLET STUFF OF SCARLET AND FINE LINEN TWISTED YOU WILL MAKE <OBJ.> IT The Breastpiece (Exodus 39:8–21) 15You are also to make a breastpiece of judgment with the same workmanship as the ephod. Construct it with gold, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and with finely spun linen.
16SQUARE IT WILL BE FOLDED DOUBLE [WILL BE] A SPAN LENGTH ITS AND [WILL BE] A SPAN BREADTH ITS 16It must be square when folded over double, a span long and a span wide.*NoteCloseThe breastpiece, when folded over, was approximately 9 inches or 22.9 centimeters in both length and width.
17AND YOU WILL FILL IN <THE> IT A SETTING OF STONE[S] FOUR ROWS STONE [WILL BE] A ROW OF A RUBY A TOPAZ AND A BERYL THE ROW <THE> ONE 17And mount on it a setting of gemstones, four rows of stones:*NoteCloseThe precise identification of some of these gemstones is uncertain. In the first row there shall be a ruby, a topaz, and an emerald;
18AND THE ROW <THE> SECOND [WILL BE] A TURQUOISE A SAPPHIRE AND AN EMERALD 18in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond;
19AND THE ROW <THE> THIRD [WILL BE] A JACINTH AN AGATE AND AN AMETHYST 19in the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;
20AND THE ROW <THE> FOURTH [WILL BE] A CHRYSOLITE AND AN ONYX AND A JASPER SET GOLD THEY WILL BE IN SETTINGS THEIR 20and in the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper. Mount these stones in gold filigree settings.
21AND THE STONES THEY WILL BE ON [THE] NAMES OF [THE] SONS OF ISRAEL TWO [PLUS] TEN ON NAMES THEIR [THE] ENGRAVINGS OF A SEAL EACH ONE ON NAME ITS THEY WILL BE FOR [THE] TWO [PLUS] TEN TRIBE[S] 21The twelve stones are to correspond to the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.
22AND YOU WILL MAKE ON THE BREASTPIECE CHAINS OF TWISTING A WORK OF CORDAGE GOLD PURE 22For the breastpiece, make braided chains like cords of pure gold.
23AND YOU WILL MAKE ON THE BREASTPIECE TWO RINGS OF GOLD AND YOU WILL PUT <OBJ.> [THE] TWO THE RINGS ON [THE] TWO [THE] ENDS OF THE BREASTPIECE 23You are also to make two gold rings and fasten them to the two corners of the breastpiece.
24AND YOU WILL PUT <OBJ.> [THE] TWO [THE] CORDS OF <THE> GOLD ON [THE] TWO THE RINGS TO [THE] ENDS OF THE BREASTPIECE 24Then fasten the two gold chains to the two gold rings at the corners of the breastpiece,
25AND <OBJ.> [THE] TWO [THE] ENDS OF [THE] TWO THE CORDS YOU WILL PUT ON [THE] TWO THE FILIGREE SETTINGS AND YOU WILL PUT [THEM] ON [THE] SHOULDER-PIECES OF THE EPHOD TO [THE] FRONT OF FACE ITS 25and fasten the other ends of the two chains to the two filigree settings, attaching them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front.
26AND YOU WILL MAKE TWO RINGS OF GOLD AND YOU WILL PUT <OBJ.> THEM ON [THE] TWO [THE] ENDS OF THE BREASTPIECE ON EDGE ITS WHICH [IS] TO [THE] SIDE OF THE EPHOD [THE] INSIDE TOWARDS 26Make two more gold rings and attach them to the other two corners of the breastpiece, on the inside edge next to the ephod.
27AND YOU WILL MAKE TWO RINGS OF GOLD AND YOU WILL PUT <OBJ.> THEM ON [THE] TWO [THE] SHOULDER-PIECES OF THE EPHOD FROM TO DOWNWARDS FROM IN FRONT OF FACE ITS <TO> CLOSE TO JOINING ITS FROM ABOVE <TO> [THE] GIRDLE OF THE EPHOD 27Make two additional gold rings and attach them to the bottom of the two shoulder pieces of the ephod, on its front, near its seam just above its woven waistband.
28SO THEY MAY BIND <OBJ.> THE BREASTPIECE FROM RINGS ITS TO [THE] RINGS OF THE EPHOD WITH A CORD OF VIOLET STUFF TO BE ON [THE] GIRDLE OF THE EPHOD AND NOT IT WILL BE DISPLACED THE BREASTPIECE FROM ON THE EPHOD 28The rings of the breastpiece shall be tied to the rings of the ephod with a cord of blue yarn, so that the breastpiece is above the waistband of the ephod and does not swing out from the ephod.
29AND HE WILL BEAR AARON <OBJ.> [THE] NAMES OF [THE] SONS OF ISRAEL ON [THE] BREASTPIECE OF <THE> JUDGMENT OVER HEART HIS WHEN GOES HE INTO THE HOLY PLACE TO A MEMORIAL <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH CONTINUALLY 29Whenever Aaron enters the Holy Place, he shall bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece of judgment, as a continual reminder before the LORD.
30AND YOU WILL PUT INTO [THE] BREASTPIECE OF <THE> JUDGMENT <OBJ.> THE URIM AND <OBJ.> THE THUMMIM AND THEY WILL BE OVER [THE] HEART OF AARON WHEN GOES HE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND HE WILL BEAR AARON <OBJ.> [THE] JUDGMENT OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL OVER HEART HIS <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH CONTINUALLY 30And place the Urim and Thummim*NoteCloseLiterally Lights and Perfections in the breastpiece of judgment, so that they will also be over Aaron’s heart whenever he comes before the LORD. Aaron will continually carry the judgment of the sons of Israel over his heart before the LORD.
31AND YOU WILL MAKE <OBJ.> [THE] ROBE OF THE EPHOD AN ENTIRETY OF VIOLET STUFF Additional Priestly Garments (Exodus 39:22–31) 31You are to make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth,
32AND IT WILL BE [THE] OPENING OF TOP ITS IN [THE] MIDDLE OF IT AN EDGE IT WILL BE[LONG] TO OPENING ITS ALL AROUND [THE] WORK A WEAVER LIKE [THE] OPENING OF A COLLAR IT WILL BE[LONG] TO <THE> IT NOT IT WILL BE TORN 32with an opening at its top in the center. Around the opening shall be a woven collar with an opening like that of a garment,*NoteCloseThe meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain; possibly a coat of mail. so that it will not tear.
33AND YOU WILL MAKE ON SKIRT ITS POMEGRANATES OF VIOLET STUFF AND PURPLE AND SCARLET STUFF OF SCARLET ON SKIRT ITS ALL AROUND AND BELLS OF GOLD [WILL BE] IN BETWEEN THEM ALL AROUND 33Make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn all the way around the lower hem, with gold bells between them,
34A BELL OF GOLD AND A POMEGRANATE A BELL OF GOLD AND A POMEGRANATE [WILL BE] ON [THE] SKIRTS OF THE ROBE ALL AROUND 34alternating the gold bells and pomegranates around the lower hem of the robe.
35AND IT WILL BE ON AARON TO SERVE AND IT WILL BE HEARD SOUND ITS WHEN GOES HE INTO THE HOLY PLACE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND WHEN COMES OUT HE AND NOT HE WILL DIE 35Aaron must wear the robe whenever he ministers, and its sound will be heard when he enters or exits the sanctuary before the LORD, so that he will not die.
36AND YOU WILL MAKE A PLATE OF GOLD PURE AND YOU WILL ENGRAVE ON IT [THE] ENGRAVINGS OF A SEAL HOLINESS TO YAHWEH 36You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as on a seal: HOLY TO THE LORD.*NoteCloseThat is, the LORD
37AND YOU WILL PUT <OBJ.> IT ON A CORD OF VIOLET STUFF AND IT WILL BE ON THE TURBAN TO [THE] FRONT OF [THE] FACE OF THE TURBAN IT WILL BE 37Fasten to it a blue cord to mount it on the turban; it shall be on the front of the turban.
38AND IT WILL BE ON [THE] FOREHEAD OF AARON AND HE WILL BEAR AARON <OBJ.> [THE] GUILT OF THE HOLY THINGS WHICH THEY WILL CONSECRATE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO ALL [THE] GIFTS OF HOLINESS<ES> THEIR AND IT WILL BE ON FOREHEAD HIS CONTINUALLY FOR ACCEPTANCE TO <THE> THEM <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH 38And it will be worn on Aaron’s forehead, so that he may bear the iniquity of the holy things that the sons of Israel consecrate with regard to all their holy gifts. It shall always be on his forehead, so that they may be acceptable before the LORD.
39AND YOU WILL WEAVE THE TUNIC FINE LINEN AND YOU WILL MAKE A TURBAN OF FINE LINEN AND A SASH YOU WILL MAKE [THE] WORK OF A WORKER IN COLORS 39You are to weave the tunic with fine linen, make the turban of fine linen, and fashion an embroidered sash.
40AND FOR [THE] SONS OF AARON YOU WILL MAKE TUNICS AND YOU WILL MAKE FOR <THE> THEM SASHES AND HEADDRESSES YOU WILL MAKE FOR <THE> THEM FOR GLORY AND FOR BEAUTY 40Make tunics, sashes, and headbands for Aaron’s sons, to give them glory and splendor.
41AND YOU WILL CLOTHE <OBJ.> THEM <OBJ.> AARON BROTHER YOUR AND <OBJ.> SONS HIS WITH <THE> HIM AND YOU WILL ANOINT <OBJ.> THEM AND YOU WILL FILL <OBJ.> HAND THEIR AND YOU WILL CONSECRATE <OBJ.> THEM AND THEY WILL SERVE AS PRIESTS <TO> <THE> ME 41After you put these garments on your brother Aaron and his sons, anoint them, ordain them, and consecrate them so that they may serve Me as priests
42AND MAKE FOR <THE> THEM UNDERGARMENTS OF LINEN TO COVER [THE] FLESH OF NAKEDNESS FROM [THE] HIPS AND TO [THE] THIGHS THEY WILL BE 42Make linen undergarments to cover their bare flesh, extending from waist to thigh.
43AND THEY WILL BE ON AARON AND ON SONS HIS WHEN GO THEY INTO [THE] TENT OF MEETING OR WHEN DRAW NEAR THEY TO THE ALTAR TO SERVE IN THE HOLY PLACE AND NOT THEY WILL BEAR GUILT AND THEY WILL DIE [IT WILL BE] A STATUTE OF PERPETUITY FOR HIM AND FOR OFFSPRING HIS AFTER HIM 43Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not incur guilt and die. This is to be a permanent statute for Aaron and his descendants. [’’]
