23THE FOR WAGES <THE> OF SIN [IS] DEATH, <THE> BUT THE GIFT <THE> OF GOD LIFE ETERNAL IN CHRIST JESUS THE LORD OF US. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1OR ARE YOU IGNORANT, BROTHERS — TO THOSE KNOWING FOR LAW I SPEAK — THAT THE LAW RULES OVER THE MAN FOR AS LONG AS [THE] TIME HE IS ALIVE? Release from the Law (Galatians 3:15–25) 1Do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
2THE FOR MARRIED WOMAN TO THE LIVING HUSBAND HAS BEEN BOUND BY LAW; IF HOWEVER SHALL DIE THE HUSBAND, SHE HAS BEEN CLEARED FROM THE LAW OF THE HUSBAND. 2For instance, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
3THEN THEREFORE WHILE IS LIVING THE HUSBAND AN ADULTERESS SHE WILL BE CALLED IF SHE SHALL BECOME [MARRIED] TO MAN ANOTHER; IF HOWEVER SHALL DIE THE HUSBAND, FREE SHE IS FROM THE LAW WHICH NOT TO BE HER AN ADULTERESS HAVING BECOME [MARRIED] TO MAN ANOTHER. 3So then, if she is joined to another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
4LIKEWISE, BROTHERS OF MINE, ALSO YOU YOURSELVES WERE PUT TO DEATH TO THE LAW THROUGH THE BODY <THE> OF CHRIST FOR <THE> TO BELONG YOU TO ANOTHER, TO THE [ONE] OUT FROM [THE] DEAD HAVING BEEN RAISED, SO THAT WE MAY BEAR FRUIT <THE> TO GOD. 4Therefore, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.
5WHILE FOR WE WERE IN THE FLESH, THE PASSIONS <THE> OF SINS THAT [WERE] THROUGH THE LAW WERE AT WORK IN THE MEMBERS OF US TO THE BRINGING FORTH OF FRUIT <THE> TO DEATH; 5For when we lived according to the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, bearing fruit for death.
6NOW HOWEVER WE HAVE BEEN RELEASED FROM THE LAW HAVING DIED TO THAT WHICH WE WERE BOUND, IN ORDER FOR TO SERVE US IN NEWNESS OF [THE] SPIRIT AND NOT IN OLDNESS OF [THE] LETTER. 6But now, having died to what bound us, we have been released from the law, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
7WHAT THEN WILL WE SAY? [IS] THE LAW SIN? NEVER WOULD IT BE! BUT <THE> SIN NOT I HAVE KNOWN ONLY EXCEPT THROUGH LAW; <THE> THEN FOR COVETOUSNESS NOT I HAD KNOWN, ONLY EXCEPT THE LAW WAS SAYING; NOT YOU WILL COVET; God’s Law Is Holy 7What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have been mindful of sin if not for the law. For I would not have been aware of coveting if the law had not said, “Do not covet.”*NoteCloseExodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21
8AN OCCASION HOWEVER HAVING TAKEN <THE> SIN THROUGH THE COMMANDMENT IT PRODUCED IN ME MYSELF ALL COVETOUSNESS; APART FROM FOR [THE] LAW SIN [IS] DEAD; 8But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
9I MYSELF HOWEVER WAS ALIVE APART FROM LAW ONCE; WHEN WAS COMING HOWEVER THE COMMANDMENT THE SIN REVIVED, 9Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
10I MYSELF THEN DIED, [10] AND PROVED TO BE ME THE COMMANDMENT THAT [WAS] TO LIFE THIS TO DEATH; 10So I discovered that the very commandment that was meant to bring life actually brought death.
11THE FOR SIN AN OCCASION HAVING TAKEN THROUGH THE COMMANDMENT DECEIVED ME AND THROUGH IT PUT [ME] TO DEATH; 11For sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through the commandment put me to death.
12SO <THE> INDEED THE LAW [IS] HOLY AND THE COMMANDMENT [IS] HOLY AND RIGHTEOUS AND GOOD. 12So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good.
13THAT WHICH THEN [IS] GOOD TO ME MYSELF BECAME DEATH? NEVER WOULD IT BE! BUT <THE> SIN, IN ORDER THAT IT MAY BE SHOWN AS SIN, THROUGH THAT WHICH [IS] GOOD TO ME IS WORKING OUT DEATH, SO THAT MAY BECOME BEYOND EXCESS SINFUL <THE> SIN THROUGH THE COMMANDMENT. Struggling with Sin 13Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Certainly not! But in order that sin might be exposed as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
14WE KNOW FOR THAT THE LAW SPIRITUAL IS, I MYSELF HOWEVER FLESHLY AM SOLD UNDER <THE> SIN. 14We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
15WHAT FOR I DO NOT I UNDERSTAND; NOT FOR WHAT I WANT THIS I DO, BUT WHAT I HATE THIS I DO. 15I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.
16IF NOW THAT WHICH NOT I DO WANT THIS I DO, I CONSENT TO THE LAW THAT [IT IS] GOOD; 16And if I do what I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good.
17IN THAT CASE NOW NO LONGER I MYSELF AM DOING IT BUT THAT WHICH IS DWELLING IN ME MYSELF SIN. 17In that case, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
18I KNOW FOR THAT NOTHING DWELLS IN ME MYSELF, THAT IS IN THE FLESH OF MINE, GOOD; <THE> FOR TO WISH [TO DO] IS PRESENT WITH ME, <THE> BUT TO DO THE GOOD NOT FIND. 18I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
19NOT FOR THAT I DESIRE I DO GOOD, BUT THAT NOT I DO WANT EVIL THIS I PRACTICE. 19For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do.
20IF NOW WHAT NOT I DO WANT I MYSELF THIS DO, NO LONGER I MYSELF WHO DO IT BUT THAT WHICH IS DWELLING IN ME MYSELF SIN. 20And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
21I FIND SO THE PRINCIPLE THAT WHICH IS DESIRING ME MYSELF TO DO <THE> GOOD THAT ME MYSELF <THE> EVIL IS PRESENT WITH. 21So this is the principle I have discovered: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
22I DELIGHT FOR IN THE LAW <THE> OF GOD ACCORDING TO THE INWARD MAN, 22For in my inner being I delight in God’s law.
23I SEE HOWEVER ANOTHER LAW IN THE MEMBERS OF MINE WARRING AGAINST THE LAW OF THE MIND OF MINE AND MAKING CAPTIVE ME TO THE LAW <THE> OF SIN WHICH IS BEING IN THE MEMBERS OF MINE. 23But I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me.*NoteCloseLiterally captive to the law of sin being in my members.
24O WRETCHED I MYSELF [AM] MAN! WHO ME WILL DELIVER OUT OF THE BODY <THE> OF DEATH THIS? 24What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
25THANKS [BE] THEN <THE> TO GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST THE LORD OF US! THEN SO MYSELF I MYSELF WITH THE INDEED MIND SERVE LAW OF GOD <THE> BUT [WITH] THE FLESH [THE] LAW OF SIN. 25Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I serve the law of God, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
