1AND ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD A WEDDING TOOK PLACE IN CANA <THE> OF GALILEE, AND WAS THE MOTHER <THE> OF JESUS THERE; The Wedding at Cana 1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,
2WAS INVITED THEN ALSO <THE> JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES OF HIM TO THE WEDDING. 2and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
3AND WHEN WAS RUNNING OUT [THE] WINE SAYS THE MOTHER <THE> OF JESUS TO HIM; WINE NOT THEY HAVE. 3When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine. ”
4AND SAYS TO HER <THE> JESUS; WHAT TO ME MYSELF AND TO YOU, WOMAN? NOT YET IS COME THE HOUR FOR ME. 4“Woman, what is that to you and to Me? ” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come. ”
5SAYS THE MOTHER OF HIM TO THE SERVANTS; WHATEVER ANYHOW MAYBE HE MAY SAY TO YOU, DO PERFORM. 5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you. ”
6THERE WERE NOW THERE OF STONE WATER JARS SIX ACCORDING TO THE PURIFICATION OF THE JEWS STANDING, HAVING SPACE FOR METRETAE TWO OR THREE. 6Now six stone water jars had been set there for the Jewish rites of purification. Each could hold from twenty to thirty gallons.*NoteCloseGreek two or three metretae; that is, approximately 20.8 to 31.2 gallons (78.8 to 118.1 liters)
7SAYS TO THEM <THE> JESUS; DO FILL THE JARS WITH WATER. AND THEY FILLED THEM UP TO [THE] BRIM. 7Jesus told the servants “Fill the jars with water. ” So they filled them to the brim.
8AND HE SAYS TO THEM; DO DRAW OUT NOW AND DO CARRY TO THE MASTER OF THE FEAST. THEY THEN CARRIED [IT]. 8“Now draw some out, ” He said “and take it to the master of the banquet. ” They did so,
9WHEN THEN TASTED THE MASTER OF THE FEAST THE WATER WINE BECAME AND NOT HE KNEW FROM WHERE IT IS — THE HOWEVER SERVANTS KNEW WHICH HAVING DRAWN THE WATER — CALLS THE BRIDEGROOM THE MASTER OF THE FEAST 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not know where it was from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside
10AND SAYS TO HIM; EVERY MAN FIRST THE GOOD WINE SETS OUT, AND WHEN THEY MAY HAVE DRUNK FREELY THEN THE INFERIOR; YOU YOURSELF HAVE KEPT THE GOOD WINE UNTIL NOW. 10and said “Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the cheap wine after the guests are drunk. But you have saved the fine wine until now! ”
11THIS DID THE BEGINNING OF THE SIGNS <THE> JESUS IN CANA <THE> OF GALILEE AND HE REVEALED THE GLORY OF HIM, AND BELIEVED IN HIM THE DISCIPLES OF HIM. 11Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
12AFTER THIS HE WENT DOWN TO CAPERNAUM HE HIMSELF AND THE MOTHER OF HIM AND THE BROTHERS OF HIM AND THE DISCIPLES OF HIM, AND THERE THEY STAYED NOT MANY DAYS. Jesus Cleanses the Temple (Matthew 21:12–17; Mark 11:15–19; Luke 19:45–48) 12After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother and brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there a few days.
13AND NEAR WAS THE PASSOVER OF THE JEWS, AND WENT UP TO JERUSALEM <THE> JESUS. 13When the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14AND HE FOUND IN THE TEMPLE THOSE SELLING OXEN AND SHEEP AND DOVES AND THE MONEY CHANGERS SITTING, 14In the temple courts*NoteCloseLiterally the temple; also in verse 15 He found men selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers seated at their tables.
15AND HAVING MADE A WHIP OF CORDS ALL HE DROVE OUT FROM THE TEMPLE, <THE> BOTH THE SHEEP AND THE OXEN, AND OF THE MONEY CHANGERS HE POURED OUT THE COIN, AND THE TABLES HE OVERTHREW, 15So He made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle. He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
16AND TO THOSE <THE> DOVES SELLING HE SAID; DO TAKE THESE THINGS FROM HERE, NOT DO MAKE THE HOUSE OF THE FATHER OF MINE A HOUSE OF TRADE. 16To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace! ”
17REMEMBERED NOW THE DISCIPLES OF HIM THAT WRITTEN IT IS: THE ZEAL OF THE HOUSE OF YOU WILL CONSUME ME. 17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.”*NoteClosePsalm 69:9
18ANSWERED THEREFORE THE JEWS AND SAID TO HIM; WHAT SIGN SHOW YOU TO US THAT THESE THINGS YOU DO? 18On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things? ”
19ANSWERED <THE> JESUS AND SAID TO THEM; DO DESTROY <THE> TEMPLE THIS, AND IN THREE DAYS I WILL RAISE UP IT. 19Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again. ”
20SAID THEREFORE THE JEWS; FOR FORTY AND SIX YEARS WAS BUILT <THE> TEMPLE THIS, AND YOU YOURSELF IN THREE DAYS WILL RAISE UP IT? 20“This temple took forty-six years to build, ” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days? ”
21HE HOWEVER WAS SPEAKING CONCERNING THE TEMPLE OF THE BODY OF HIM. 21But Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body.
22WHEN THEREFORE HE WAS RAISED UP OUT FROM [THE] DEAD, REMEMBERED THE DISCIPLES OF HIM THAT THIS HE WAS SAYING TO THEM AND THEY BELIEVED IN THE SCRIPTURE AND IN THE WORD THAT HAD SPOKEN <THE> JESUS. 22After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
23WHEN THEN HE WAS IN <THE> JERUSALEM IN THE PASSOVER IN THE FEAST, MANY BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF HIM BEHOLDING OF HIM THE SIGNS THAT HE WAS DOING. 23While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the signs He was doing and believed in His name.
24ON HIS PART HOWEVER <THE> JESUS NOT WAS ENTRUSTING HIM[SELF] TO THEM BECAUSE OF <THE> HIS KNOWING ALL [MEN] 24But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew them all.
25AND BECAUSE NO NEED HE HAD THAT ANYONE MAY TESTIFY CONCERNING THE MAN; HE HIMSELF FOR WAS KNOWING WHAT WAS IN THE MAN. 25He did not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man.
