16WHEN TRANSGRESS YOU <OBJ.> [THE] COVENANT OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR WHICH HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> YOU AND YOU WILL GO AND YOU WILL SERVE GODS OTHER AND YOU WILL BOW DOWN TO <THE> THEM AND IT WILL BURN [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH ON <THE> YOU AND YOU WILL PERISH QUICKLY FROM ON THE LAND <THE> GOOD WHICH HE HAS GIVEN TO <THE> YOU 16If you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.”
1AND HE GATHERED JOSHUA <OBJ.> ALL [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL SHECHEM TOWARDS AND HE SUMMONED <TO> [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL AND <TO> LEADERS ITS AND <TO> JUDGES ITS AND <TO> OFFICIALS ITS AND THEY PRESENTED THEMSELVES <TO> BEFORE <THE> GOD Joshua Reviews Israel’s History 1Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.
2AND HE SAID JOSHUA TO ALL THE PEOPLE THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER THEY DWELT ANCESTORS YOUR FROM LONG AGO TERAH [THE] FATHER OF ABRAHAM AND [THE] FATHER OF NAHOR AND THEY SERVED GODS OTHER 2And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates*NoteCloseHebrew the River; also in verses 3, 14, and 15 and worshiped other gods.
3AND I TOOK <OBJ.> ANCESTOR YOUR <OBJ.> ABRAHAM FROM [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER AND I LED <OBJ.> HIM IN ALL [THE] LAND OF CANAAN AND I INCREASED <OBJ.> OFFSPRING HIS AND I GAVE TO <THE> HIM <OBJ.> ISAAC 3But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
4AND I GAVE TO ISAAC <OBJ.> JACOB AND <OBJ.> ESAU AND I GAVE TO ESAU <OBJ.> [THE] MOUNTAIN OF SEIR TO TAKE POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> IT AND JACOB AND SONS HIS THEY WENT DOWN EGYPT 4and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave Esau Mount Seir to possess but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
5AND I SENT <OBJ.> MOSES AND <OBJ.> AARON AND I STRUCK <OBJ.> EGYPT JUST AS I DID IN MIDST ITS AND AFTER I BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> YOU 5Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and afterward I brought you out.
6AND I BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> FATHERS YOUR FROM EGYPT AND YOU CAME THE SEA TOWARDS AND THEY PURSUED EGYPT AFTER FATHERS YOUR WITH CHARIOTRY AND WITH HORSEMEN [THE] SEA OF REED[S] 6When I brought your fathers out of Egypt and you reached the Red Sea,*NoteCloseOr the Sea of Reeds the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea.
7AND THEY CRIED OUT TO YAHWEH AND HE PUT DARKNESS BETWEEN YOU AND BETWEEN THE EGYPTIANS AND HE BROUGHT OVER IT <OBJ.> THE SEA AND IT COVERED IT AND THEY SAW EYES YOUR <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH I DID IN EGYPT AND YOU DWELT IN THE WILDERNESS DAYS MANY 7So your fathers cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the sea and engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.
8AND I BROUGHT <OBJ.> YOU TO [THE] LAND OF THE AMORITE[S] WHO DWELT ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN AND THEY FOUGHT WITH YOU AND I GAVE <OBJ.> THEM IN HAND YOUR AND YOU TOOK POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> LAND THEIR AND I DESTROYED THEM FROM BEFORE YOU 8Later, I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
9AND HE AROSE BALAK [THE] SON OF ZIPPOR [THE] KING OF MOAB AND HE FOUGHT AGAINST ISRAEL AND HE SENT AND HE SUMMONED <TO> BALAAM [THE] SON OF BEOR TO CURSE <OBJ.> YOU 9Then Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent for Balaam son of Beor to curse you
10AND NOT I WAS WILLING TO LISTEN TO BALAAM AND HE BLESSED CONTINUOUSLY <TO BLESS> <OBJ.> YOU AND I DELIVERED <OBJ.> YOU FROM HAND HIS 10but I would not listen to Balaam. So he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you from his hand.
11AND YOU PASSED OVER <OBJ.> THE JORDAN AND YOU CAME TO JERICHO AND THEY FOUGHT AGAINST <THE> YOU [THE] CITIZENS OF JERICHO THE AMORITE[S] AND THE PERIZZITE[S] AND THE CANAANITE[S] AND THE HITTITE[S] AND THE GIRGASHITE[S] THE HIVITE[S] AND THE JEBUSITE[S] AND I GAVE <OBJ.> THEM IN HAND YOUR 11After this, you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The people of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I delivered them into your hand.
12AND I SENT <TO> BEFORE YOU <OBJ.> THE HORNET AND IT DROVE OUT <OBJ.> THEM FROM BEFORE YOU [THE] TWO [THE] KINGS OF THE AMORITE[S] NOT BY SWORD YOUR AND NOT BY BOW YOUR 12I sent the hornet ahead of you, and it drove out the two Amorite kings before you, but not by your own sword or bow.
13AND I GAVE TO <THE> YOU A LAND WHICH NOT YOU HAD LABORED FOR IT AND CITIES WHICH NOT YOU HAD BUILT AND YOU DWELT IN <THE> THEM VINEYARDS AND OLIVE TREES WHICH NOT YOU HAD PLANTED YOU [ARE] EATING 13So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities that you did not build, and now you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’
14AND THEREFORE FEAR <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND SERVE <OBJ.> HIM IN INTEGRITY AND IN FAITHFULNESS AND REMOVE <OBJ.> [THE] GODS WHICH THEY SERVED ANCESTORS YOUR ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER AND IN EGYPT AND SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH Choose Whom You Will Serve (Deuteronomy 10:12–22) 14Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; cast aside the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
15AND IF IS DISPLEASING IN VIEW YOUR TO SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH CHOOSE FOR <THE> YOURSELVES THIS DAY <OBJ.> WHOM? WILL YOU SERVE! WHETHER <OBJ.> [THE] GODS WHICH THEY SERVED ANCESTORS YOUR WHO [WERE] FROM [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER AND OR <OBJ.> [THE] GODS OF THE AMORITE[S] WHOM YOU [ARE] DWELLING IN LAND THEIR AND I AND HOUSEHOLD MY WE WILL SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH 15But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”
16AND IT ANSWERED THE PEOPLE AND IT SAID FAR BE IT TO <THE> US FROM FORSAKING <OBJ.> YAHWEH TO SERVE GODS OTHER 16The people replied, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
17FOR YAHWEH GOD OUR HE [IS] THE [ONE WHO] BROUGHT UP <OBJ.> US AND <OBJ.> FATHERS OUR FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT FROM A HOUSE OF SLAVES AND [THE ONE] WHO HE DID TO EYES OUR <OBJ.> THE SIGNS <THE> GREAT <THE> THESE AND HE KEPT US IN ALL THE WAY WHICH WE WENT IN <THE> IT AND AMONG ALL THE PEOPLES WHICH WE PASSED IN MIDST THEIR 17For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
18AND HE DROVE OUT YAHWEH <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLES AND <OBJ.> THE AMORITE[S] [WHO] DWELT OF THE LAND FROM BEFORE US ALSO WE WE WILL SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH FOR HE [IS] GOD OUR 18And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because He is our God!”
19AND HE SAID JOSHUA TO THE PEOPLE NOT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH FOR [IS] A GOD HOLY HE [IS] A GOD JEALOUS HE NOT HE WILL FORGIVE TO TRANSGRESSION YOUR AND <TO> SINS YOUR 19But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD, for He is a holy God; He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your rebellion or your sins.
20IF YOU WILL FORSAKE <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND YOU WILL SERVE GODS OF FOREIGNNESS AND HE WILL TURN AND HE WILL DO HARM TO <THE> YOU AND HE WILL MAKE AN END OF <OBJ.> YOU AFTER THAT HE HAS DONE GOOD TO <THE> YOU 20If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, He will turn and bring disaster on you and consume you, even after He has been good to you.”
21AND IT SAID THE PEOPLE TO JOSHUA IN- DEED <OBJ.> YAHWEH WE WILL SERVE 21“No!” replied the people. “We will serve the LORD!”
22AND HE SAID JOSHUA TO THE PEOPLE [ARE] WITNESSES YOU ON <THE> YOURSELVES THAT YOU YOU HAVE CHOSEN FOR <THE> YOURSELVES <OBJ.> YAHWEH TO SERVE <OBJ.> HIM AND THEY SAID WITNESSES 22Then Joshua told them, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” “We are witnesses!” they said.
23AND THEREFORE REMOVE <OBJ.> [THE] GODS OF <THE> FOREIGNNESS WHICH [ARE] IN MIDST YOUR AND TURN <OBJ.> HEART YOUR TO YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL 23“Now, therefore,” he said, “get rid of the foreign gods among you and incline your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”
24AND THEY SAID THE PEOPLE TO JOSHUA <OBJ.> YAHWEH GOD OUR WE WILL SERVE AND TO VOICE HIS WE WILL LISTEN 24So the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey His voice.”
25AND HE MADE JOSHUA A COVENANT TO THE PEOPLE ON THE DAY <THE> THAT AND HE ESTABLISHED FOR <THE> IT A DECREE AND A JUDGMENT AT SHECHEM 25On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he established for them a statute and ordinance.
26AND HE WROTE JOSHUA <OBJ.> THE WORDS <THE> THESE IN [THE] BOOK OF [THE] LAW OF GOD AND HE TOOK A STONE LARGE AND HE SET UP IT THERE UNDER THE OAK WHICH [WAS] AT [THE] SANCTUARY OF YAHWEH 26Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak*NoteCloseOr terebinth that was near the sanctuary of the LORD.
27AND HE SAID JOSHUA TO ALL THE PEOPLE HERE! THE STONE <THE> THIS IT WILL BECOME ON <THE> US <INTO> A WITNESS FOR IT IT HAS HEARD <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORDS OF YAHWEH WHICH HE HAS SPOKEN WITH US AND IT WILL BECOME ON <THE> YOU <INTO> A WITNESS LEST YOU SHOULD DENY! <IN> GOD YOUR 27And Joshua said to all the people, “You see this stone. It will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us, and it will be a witness against you if you ever deny your God.”
28AND HE SENT AWAY JOSHUA <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE EVERYONE TO OWN INHERITANCE HIS 28Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.
29AND IT WAS AFTER THE THINGS <THE> THESE AND HE DIED JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN [THE] SERVANT OF YAHWEH A SON OF ONE HUNDRED AND TEN YEARS Joshua’s Death and Burial (Judges 2:6–9) 29Some time later, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110
30AND PEOPLE BURIED <OBJ.> HIM IN [THE] TERRITORY OF INHERITANCE HIS AT TIMNATH SERAH WHICH [IS] IN [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF EPHRAIM FROM [THE] NORTH OF [THE] MOUNTAIN OF GAASH 30And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-serah*NoteCloseTimnath-serah is also known as Timnath-heres; see Judges 2:9. in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
31AND IT SERVED ISRAEL <OBJ.> YAHWEH ALL [THE] DAYS OF JOSHUA AND ALL [THE] DAYS OF THE OLD [MEN] WHO THEY MADE LONG DAYS AFTER JOSHUA AND WHO THEY KNEW <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORK OF YAHWEH WHICH HE HAD DONE FOR ISRAEL 31Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.
32AND <OBJ.> [THE] BONES OF JOSEPH WHICH THEY HAD BROUGHT UP [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM EGYPT THEY BURIED AT SHECHEM IN [THE] PORTION OF THE FIELD WHICH HE HAD BOUGHT JACOB FROM WITH [THE] SONS OF HAMOR [THE] FATHER OF SHECHEM FOR A HUNDRED PIECE[S] OF MONEY AND THEY BECAME OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH <INTO> AN INHERITANCE 32And the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up out of Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the plot of land that Jacob had purchased from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver.*NoteCloseHebrew a hundred kesitahs; the value or weight of the kesitah is no longer known. So it became an inheritance for Joseph’s descendants.
33AND ELEAZAR [THE] SON OF AARON HE DIED AND PEOPLE BURIED <OBJ.> HIM AT GIBEAH OF PHINEHAS SON HIS WHICH IT HAD BEEN GIVEN TO <THE> HIM IN [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF EPHRAIM 33Eleazar son of Aaron also died, and they buried him at Gibeah, which had been given to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.
