The Conquest of Canaan Proceeds
(Joshua 13:1–7 )
1 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, “Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?”
2 AND HE SAID YAHWEH JUDAH HE WILL GO UP HERE! I HAVE GIVEN <OBJ.> THE LAND IN HAND HIS
2 “Judah shall go up,” answered the LORD. “Indeed, I have delivered the land into their hands.”
3 AND HE SAID JUDAH TO SIMEON BROTHER HIS COME UP WITH ME IN LOT MY SO LET US FIGHT AGAINST THE CANAANITE[S] AND I WILL GO ALSO I WITH YOU IN LOT YOUR AND HE WENT WITH HIM SIMEON
3 Then the men of Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our allotted territory, and let us fight against the Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.
4 AND HE WENT UP JUDAH AND HE GAVE YAHWEH <OBJ.> THE CANAANITE[S] AND THE PERIZZITE[S] IN HAND THEIR AND THEY DEFEATED THEM AT BEZEK TEN THOUSAND<S> MAN
4 When Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.
5 AND THEY FOUND <OBJ.> ADONI- BEZEK AT BEZEK AND THEY FOUGHT AGAINST <THE> HIM AND THEY DEFEATED <OBJ.> THE CANAANITE[S] AND <OBJ.> THE PERIZZITE[S]
5 And there they found Adoni-bezek and fought against him, striking down the Canaanites and Perizzites.
6 AND HE FLED ADONI- BEZEK AND THEY PURSUED AFTER HIM AND THEY SEIZED <OBJ.> HIM AND THEY CUT OFF <OBJ.> [THE] THUMBS OF HANDS HIS AND FEET HIS
6 As Adoni-bezek
fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
7 AND HE SAID ADONI- BEZEK SEVENTY KINGS [THE] THUMBS OF HANDS THEIR AND FEET THEIR CUT OFF THEY WERE GATHERING UP UNDER TABLE MY JUST AS I HAVE DONE SO HE HAS REPAID TO <THE> ME GOD AND THEY BROUGHT HIM JERUSALEM AND HE DIED THERE
7 Then Adoni-bezek said “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have gathered the scraps under my table. As I have done to them, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
8 AND THEY FOUGHT [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JUDAH AGAINST JERUSALEM AND THEY CAPTURED <OBJ.> IT AND THEY STRUCK IT TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND <OBJ.> THE CITY THEY SENT IN <THE> FIRE
The Capture of Jerusalem and Hebron
(Joshua 15:13–19 )
8 Then the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
9 AND AFTER THEY WENT DOWN [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JUDAH TO FIGHT AGAINST THE CANAANITE[S] [WHO] DWELT OF THE HILL COUNTRY AND THE NEGEV AND THE SHEPHELAH
9 Afterward, the men of Judah marched down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, in the Negev, and in the foothills.
10 AND HE WENT JUDAH AGAINST THE CANAANITE[S] WHO DWELT IN HEBRON AND [THE] NAME OF HEBRON <TO> BEFORE [WAS] KIRIATH ARBA AND THEY DEFEATED <OBJ.> SHESHAI AND <OBJ.> AHIMAN AND <OBJ.> TALMAI
10 Judah also marched against the Canaanites who were living in Hebron formerly known as Kiriath-arba), and they struck down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 AND HE WENT FROM THERE AGAINST [THE] INHABITANTS OF DEBIR AND [THE] NAME OF DEBIR <TO> BEFORE [WAS] KIRIATH SEPHER
11 From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
12 AND HE SAID CALEB [THE ONE] WHO HE WILL STRIKE <OBJ.> KIRIATH SEPHER AND HE WILL CAPTURE IT AND I WILL GIVE TO <THE> HIM <OBJ.> ACHSAH DAUGHTER MY TO A WIFE
12 And Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
13 AND HE CAPTURED IT OTHNIEL [THE] SON OF KENAZ [THE] BROTHER OF CALEB <THE> YOUNG MORE THAN HIM AND HE GAVE TO <THE> HIM <OBJ.> ACHSAH DAUGHTER HIS TO A WIFE
13 So Othniel son of Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz captured the city, and Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
14 AND IT WAS WHEN CAME SHE AND SHE INCITED HIM TO ASK FROM WITH FATHER HER THE FIELD AND SHE WENT DOWN FROM ON THE DONKEY AND HE SAID TO <THE> HER CALEB WHAT? [IS] TO <THE> YOU
14 One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
15 AND SHE SAID TO <THE> HIM GIVE ! TO <THE> ME A BLESSING FOR [THE] LAND OF THE NEGEV YOU HAVE GIVEN TO ME AND YOU WILL GIVE TO <THE> ME SPRINGS OF WATER AND HE GAVE TO <THE> HER CALEB <OBJ.> SPRINGS UPPER AND <OBJ.> SPRINGS LOWER
15 “Give me a blessing,” she answered “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water as well.”
So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
16 AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF [THE] KENITE [THE] FATHER-IN-LAW OF MOSES THEY WENT UP FROM [THE] CITY OF THE PALM TREES WITH [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JUDAH [THE] WILDERNESS OF JUDAH WHICH [IS] IN [THE] NEGEV ARAD AND HE WENT AND HE DWELT WITH THE PEOPLE
16 Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah in the Negev near Arad. They went to live among the people.
17 AND HE WENT JUDAH WITH SIMEON BROTHER HIS AND THEY ATTACKED <OBJ.> THE CANAANITE[S] [WHO] DWELT OF ZEPHATH AND THEY TOTALLY DESTROYED <OBJ.> IT AND HE CALLED <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF THE CITY HORMAH
17 Then the men of Judah went with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was called. Hormah.
18 AND HE CAPTURED JUDAH <OBJ.> GAZA AND <OBJ.> TERRITORY ITS AND <OBJ.> ASHKELON AND <OBJ.> TERRITORY ITS AND <OBJ.> EKRON AND <OBJ.> TERRITORY ITS
18 And Judah also captured Gaza Ashkelon and Ekron— each with its territory.
19 AND HE WAS YAHWEH WITH JUDAH AND IT TOOK POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> THE HILL COUNTRY FOR NOT TO DISPOSSESS <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE VALLEY FOR CHARIOTRY OF IRON [BELONGED] TO <THE> THEM
19 The LORD was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plains because they had chariots of iron.
20 AND PEOPLE GAVE TO CALEB <OBJ.> HEBRON JUST AS HE HAD SAID MOSES AND HE DISPOSSESSED FROM THERE <OBJ.> THREE [THE] SONS OF <THE> ANAK
20 Just as Moses had promised, Judah gave Hebron to Caleb, who drove out the descendants of the three sons of Anak.
21 AND <OBJ.> THE JEBUSITE[S] [WHO] DWELT OF JERUSALEM NOT THEY DISPOSSESSED [THE] DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN AND HE HAS DWELT THE JEBUSITE[S] WITH [THE] DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN IN JERUSALEM UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS
21 The Benjamites, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the Benjamites.
22 AND THEY WENT UP [THE] HOUSE OF JOSEPH ALSO THEY BETH- -EL AND YAHWEH [WAS] WITH <THE> THEM
22 The house of Joseph also attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
23 AND THEY CAUSED TO SPY OUT [THE] HOUSE OF JOSEPH AT BETH- -EL AND [THE] NAME OF THE CITY <TO> BEFORE [WAS] LUZ
23 They sent spies to Bethel formerly known as Luz),
24 AND THEY SAW THOSE [WHO] WATCHED A MAN COMING OUT FROM THE CITY AND THEY SAID TO <THE> HIM SHOW US PLEASE <OBJ.> [THE] ENTRANCE OF THE CITY AND WE WILL DO WITH YOU LOYALTY
24 and when the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, “Please show us how to get into the city, and we will treat you kindly.”
25 AND HE SHOWED THEM <OBJ.> [THE] ENTRANCE OF THE CITY AND THEY STRUCK <OBJ.> THE CITY TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND <OBJ.> THE MAN AND <OBJ.> ALL FAMILY HIS THEY LET GO
25 So the man showed them the entrance to the city, and they put the city to the sword but released that man and all his family.
26 AND HE WENT THE MAN [THE] LAND OF THE HITTITES AND HE BUILT A CITY AND HE CALLED NAME ITS LUZ THAT [IS] NAME ITS UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS
26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.
27 AND NOT IT TOOK POSSESSION OF MANASSEH <OBJ.> BETH SHEAN AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS ITS AND <OBJ.> TAANACH AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS ITS AND <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF DOR AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS ITS AND <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF IBLEAM AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS ITS AND <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF MEGIDDO AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS ITS AND IT WAS DETERMINED THE CANAANITE[S] TO DWELL IN THE LAND <THE> THIS
The Failure to Complete the Conquest
27 At that time Manasseh failed to drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean, Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo, and their villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.
28 AND IT WAS THAT IT BECAME STRONG ISRAEL AND IT MADE <OBJ.> THE CANAANITE[S] INTO FORCED LABOR AND CERTAINLY <TO DISPOSSESS> NOT IT DISPOSSESSED HIM
28 When Israel became stronger, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor, but they never drove them out completely.
29 AND EPHRAIM NOT IT DISPOSSESSED <OBJ.> THE CANAANITE[S] WHO DWELT IN GEZER AND IT DWELT THE CANAANITE[S] IN MIDST ITS IN GEZER
29 Ephraim also failed to drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer; so the Canaanites continued to dwell among them in Gezer.
30 ZEBULUN NOT IT DISPOSSESSED <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF KITRON AND <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF NAHALOL AND IT DWELT THE CANAANITE[S] IN MIDST ITS AND THEY BECAME <INTO> FORCED LABOR
30 Zebulun failed to drive out the inhabitants of Kitron and Nahalol; so the Canaanites lived among them and served as forced laborers.
31 ASHER NOT IT DISPOSSESSED <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF ACCO AND <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF SIDON AND <OBJ.> AHLAB AND <OBJ.> ACZIB AND <OBJ.> HELBAH AND <OBJ.> APHEK AND <OBJ.> REHOB
31 Asher failed to drive out the inhabitants of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, and Rehob.
32 AND IT DWELT THE ASHERITE[S] IN [THE] MIDST OF THE CANAANITE[S] [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE LAND FOR NOT IT DISPOSSESSED IT
32 So the Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, because they did not drive them out.
33 NAPHTALI NOT IT DISPOSSESSED <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF BETH SHEMESH AND <OBJ.> [THE] INHABITANTS OF BETH ANATH AND IT DWELT IN [THE] MIDST OF THE CANAANITE[S] [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE LAND AND [THE] INHABITANTS OF BETH SHEMESH AND BETH ANATH THEY BECAME FOR <THE> THEM <INTO> FORCED LABOR
33 Naphtali failed to drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. So the Naphtalites also lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served them as forced laborers.
34 AND THEY PRESSED THE AMORITE[S] <OBJ.> [THE] DESCENDANTS OF DAN THE HILL COUNTRY TOWARDS FOR NOT IT PERMITTED IT TO GO DOWN TO THE VALLEY
34 The Amorites forced the Danites into the hill country and did not allow them to come down into the plain.
35 AND IT WAS DETERMINED THE AMORITE[S] TO DWELL IN [THE] MOUNTAIN OF HERES IN AIJALON AND IN SHAALBIM AND IT WAS HEAVY [THE] HAND OF [THE] HOUSE OF JOSEPH AND THEY BECAME <INTO> FORCED LABOR
35 And the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim. But when the house of Joseph grew in strength, they pressed the Amorites into forced labor.
36 AND [THE] BORDER OF THE AMORITE[S] [WAS] FROM [THE] ASCENT OF SCORPIONS FROM <THE> SELA AND UP -WARDS
36 And the border of the Amorites extended from the Ascent of Akrabbim to Sela and beyond.
