1AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO MOSES AND TO AARON <TO> SAYING TO THEM Clean and Unclean Animals (Deuteronomy 14:1–21; Acts 10:9–16) 1The LORD spoke again to Moses and Aaron, telling them,
2SPEAK TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <TO> SAYING THIS [IS] THE LIVING CREATURE WHICH YOU WILL EAT FROM EVERY <THE> ANIMAL WHICH [IS] ON THE EARTH 2“Say to the Israelites Of all the beasts of the earth, these ones you may eat:
3ANY [ONE WHICH] DIVIDES IN TWO A HOOF AND [WHICH] CLEAVES A CLEFT OF HOOVES [WHICH] BRINGS UP CUD AMONG THE ANIMAL[S] <OBJ.> IT YOU WILL EAT 3You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.
4NEVERTHELESS <OBJ.> THIS NOT YOU MUST EAT FROM [THOSE WHICH] BRING UP <OF> THE CUD AND FROM [THOSE WHICH] DIVIDE IN TWO <OF> THE HOOF <OBJ.> THE CAMEL THAT [IS] BRINGING UP <OF> CUD IT AND A HOOF NOT IT [IS] DIVIDING IN TWO [IS] UNCLEAN IT TO <THE> YOU 4But of those that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, you are not to eat the following:*NoteCloseThe precise identification of some of the birds and animals in this chapter is uncertain. 6AND <OBJ.> THE HARE THAT [IS] BRINGING UP <OF> CUD IT AND A HOOF NOT IT DIVIDES IN TWO [IS] UNCLEAN IT TO <THE> YOU 6The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
7AND <OBJ.> THE PIG THAT [IS] DIVIDING IN TWO A HOOF IT AND [IS] CLEAVING A CLEFT OF A HOOF AND IT CUD NOT IT RUMINATES [IS] UNCLEAN IT TO <THE> YOU 7And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
8ANY OF MEAT THEIR NOT YOU MUST EAT AND <IN> CARCASS THEIR NOT YOU WILL TOUCH [ARE] UNCLEAN THEY TO <THE> YOU 8You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
9<OBJ.> THIS YOU WILL EAT FROM ALL THAT [IS] IN THE WATERS ALL THAT [BELONG] TO <THE> IT FIN AND SCALE IN THE WATERS IN THE SEAS AND IN THE WADIS <OBJ.> THEM YOU WILL EAT 9Of all the creatures that live in the water, whether in the seas or in the streams you may eat anything with fins and scales.
10AND ALL THAT NOT [BELONG] TO <THE> IT FIN AND SCALE IN THE SEAS AND IN THE WADIS FROM EVERY <THE> SWARMING THING OF THE WATERS AND OF EVERY CREATURE <THE> LIVING WHICH [IS] IN THE WATERS [ARE] DETESTABLE THING[S] THEY TO <THE> YOU 10But the following among all the teeming life and creatures in the water are detestable to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales.
11AND DETESTABLE THING[S] THEY WILL BE TO <THE> YOU ANY OF MEAT THEIR NOT YOU MUST EAT AND <OBJ.> CARCASS THEIR YOU WILL CONSIDER DETESTABLE 11They shall be an abomination to you; you must not eat their meat, and you must detest their carcasses.
12ALL THAT NOT [BELONG] TO <THE> IT FIN AND SCALE IN THE WATERS [IS] A DETESTABLE THING IT TO <THE> YOU 12Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales shall be detestable to you.
13AND <OBJ.> THESE YOU WILL CONSIDER DETESTABLE FROM THE BIRD[S] NOT THEY WILL BE EATEN [ARE] DETESTABLE THING[S] THEY <OBJ.> THE EAGLE AND <OBJ.> THE BEARDED VULTURE AND <OBJ.> THE OSPREY 13Additionally, you are to detest the following birds, and they must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,

17AND <OBJ.> THE LITTLE OWL AND <OBJ.> THE CORMORANT AND <OBJ.> THE GREAT OWL 17the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,
18AND <OBJ.> THE BARN OWL AND <OBJ.> THE DESERT OWL AND <OBJ.> THE EGYPTIAN VULTURE 18the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,
19AND <OBJ.> THE STORK THE HERON TO KIND ITS AND <OBJ.> THE HOOPOE AND <OBJ.> THE BAT 19the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.
20EVERY <THE> SWARMING THING OF <THE> WING WHICH WALKS ON FOUR [LEGS] [IS] A DETESTABLE THING IT TO <THE> YOU 20All flying insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.
21NEVERTHELESS <OBJ.> THIS YOU WILL EAT FROM EVERY <THE> SWARMING THING OF <THE> WING WHICH WALKS ON FOUR [LEGS] WHICH [BELONG] TO <THE> IT LEGS FROM ABOVE <TO> FEET ITS TO HOP WITH <THE> THEM ON THE GROUND 21However, you may eat the following kinds of flying insects that walk on all fours: those having jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
22<OBJ.> THESE ANY OF <THE> THEM YOU WILL EAT <OBJ.> THE LOCUST TO KIND ITS AND <OBJ.> THE LOCUST TO KIND ITS AND <OBJ.> THE LOCUST TO KIND ITS AND <OBJ.> THE GRASSHOPPER TO KIND ITS 22Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, or grasshopper.
23AND EVERY <THE> SWARMING THING OF <THE> WING WHICH [BELONG] TO <THE> IT FOUR FEET [IS] A DETESTABLE THING IT TO <THE> YOU 23All other flying insects that have four legs are detestable to you.
24AND TO THESE YOU WILL MAKE YOURSELVES UNCLEAN EVERY <THE> [ONE WHO] TOUCHES <IN> CARCASS THEIR HE WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING 24These creatures will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
25AND EVERY <THE> [ONE WHO] CARRIES ANY OF CARCASS THEIR HE WILL WASH GARMENTS HIS AND HE WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING 25and whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening.
26TO EVERY <THE> ANIMAL WHICH IT [IS] DIVIDING IN TWO A HOOF AND A CLEFT NOT IT [IS] CLEAVING AND CUD NOT IT [IS] BRINGING UP [ARE] UNCLEAN THEY TO <THE> YOU EVERY <THE> [ONE WHO] TOUCHES <IN> <THE> THEM HE WILL BE UNCLEAN 26Every animal with hooves not completely divided*NoteCloseLiterally a split hoof not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. Whoever touches any of them will be unclean.
27AND ANY [ONE WHICH] WALKS ON PAWS ITS AMONG EVERY <THE> LIVING CREATURE WHICH WALKS ON FOUR [FEET] [ARE] UNCLEAN THEY TO <THE> YOU EVERY <THE> [ONE WHO] TOUCHES <IN> CARCASS THEIR HE WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING 27All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
28AND WHO [-EVER] CARRIES <OBJ.> CARCASS THEIR HE WILL WASH GARMENTS HIS AND HE WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING [ARE] UNCLEAN THEY TO <THE> YOU 28and anyone who picks up a carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.
29AND THIS TO <THE> YOU [IS] THE UNCLEAN AMONG THE SWARMING THING[S] WHICH SWARMS ON THE EARTH THE WEASEL AND THE MOUSE AND THE GREAT LIZARD TO KIND ITS 29The following creatures that move along the ground are unclean for you: the mole, the mouse, any kind of great lizard,
30AND THE GECKO AND THE MONITOR LIZARD AND THE WALL LIZARD AND THE SKINK AND THE CHAMELEON 30the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon.
31THESE [ARE] THE UNCLEAN TO <THE> YOU AMONG EVERY <THE> SWARMING THING EVERY <THE> [ONE WHO] TOUCHES <IN> <THE> THEM IN DEATH THEIR HE WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING 31These animals are unclean for you among all the crawling creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.
32AND ALL THAT IT WILL FALL ON IT ANY OF <THE> THEM IN DEATH THEIR IT WILL BE UNCLEAN FROM EVERY VESSEL OF WOOD OR A GARMENT OR A HIDE OR SACKCLOTH EVERY VESSEL WHICH IT WILL BE DONE A WORK IN <THE> THEM IN <THE> WATER IT WILL BE PUT AND IT WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING AND IT WILL BE PURE 32When one of them dies and falls on something, that article becomes unclean; any article of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work must be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
33AND EVERY VESSEL OF EARTHENWARE WHICH IT WILL FALL ANY OF <THE> THEM INTO [THE] MIDDLE OF IT ALL THAT [IS] IN [THE] MIDST OF IT IT WILL BE UNCLEAN AND <OBJ.> IT YOU WILL BREAK 33If any of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean; you must break the pot.
34ANY OF ALL THE FOOD WHICH IT WILL BE EATEN WHICH IT WILL COME ON IT WATER IT WILL BE UNCLEAN AND ANY DRINK WHICH IT IS DRUNK IN EVERY VESSEL IT WILL BE UNCLEAN 34Any food coming into contact with water from that pot will be unclean, and any drink in such a container will be unclean.
35AND ALL THAT IT WILL FALL ANY OF CARCASS THEIR ON IT IT WILL BE UNCLEAN AN OVEN AND A STOVE IT WILL BE BROKEN UP [ARE] UNCLEAN THEY AND UNCLEAN THEY WILL BE TO <THE> YOU 35Anything upon which one of their carcasses falls will be unclean. If it is an oven or cooking pot, it must be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you.
36NEVERTHELESS A SPRING AND A CISTERN A RESERVOIR OF WATER IT WILL BE PURE AND [ONE WHO] TOUCHES <IN> CARCASS THEIR HE WILL BE UNCLEAN 36Nevertheless, a spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but one who touches a carcass in it will be unclean.
37AND IF IT WILL FALL ANY OF CARCASS THEIR ON EVERY SEED OF SOWING WHICH IT WILL BE SOWN [IS] PURE IT 37If a carcass falls on any seed for sowing the seed is clean;
38AND IF IT WILL BE PUT WATER ON SEED AND IT WILL FALL ANY OF CARCASS THEIR ON IT [IS] UNCLEAN IT TO <THE> YOU 38but if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
39AND IF IT WILL DIE ANY OF THE LIVESTOCK WHICH IT [BELONGS] TO <THE> YOU TO FOOD WHO [-EVER] TOUCHES <IN> CARCASS ITS HE WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING 39If an animal that you may eat dies, anyone who touches the carcass will be unclean until evening.
40AND [WHO [-EVER] EATS ANY OF CARCASS ITS HE WILL WASH GARMENTS HIS AND HE WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING AND WHO [-EVER] CARRIES <OBJ.> CARCASS ITS HE WILL WASH GARMENTS HIS AND HE WILL BE UNCLEAN UNTIL THE EVENING 40Whoever eats from the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening, and anyone who picks up the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
41AND EVERY <THE> SWARMING THING WHICH SWARMS ON THE EARTH [IS] A DETESTABLE THING IT NOT IT WILL BE EATEN 41Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable; it must not be eaten.
42ANY [ONE WHICH] WALKS ON BELLY AND ANY [ONE WHICH] WALKS ON FOUR [FEET] TO ANY [ONE WHICH] MULTIPLIES <OF> FEET TO EVERY <THE> SWARMING THING WHICH SWARMS ON THE EARTH NOT YOU MUST EAT THEM FOR [ARE] A DETESTABLE THING THEY 42Do not eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it crawls on its belly or walks on four or more feet; for such creatures are detestable.
43MAY NOT YOU MAKE DETESTABLE <OBJ.> SELVES YOUR BY ANY <THE> SWARMING THING WHICH SWARMS AND NOT YOU MUST MAKE YOURSELVES UNCLEAN BY <THE> THEM AND YOU WILL MAKE YOURSELVES UNCLEAN BY <THE> THEM 43Do not defile yourselves by any crawling creature; do not become unclean or defiled by them.
44FOR I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR AND YOU WILL KEEP YOURSELVES HOLY AND YOU WILL BE HOLY FOR [AM] HOLY I AND NOT YOU MUST MAKE UNCLEAN <OBJ.> SELVES YOUR BY ANY <THE> SWARMING THING WHICH CREEPS ON THE EARTH 44For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy.*NoteCloseHere and in verse 45; cited in 1 Peter 1:16 You must not defile yourselves by any creature that crawls along the ground.

46THIS [IS] [THE] LEGAL [PROCEDURE] OF THE LIVESTOCK AND THE BIRD[S] AND EVERY CREATURE <THE> LIVING WHICH MOVES IN THE WATERS AND TO EVERY CREATURE WHICH SWARMS ON THE EARTH 46This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that crawl along the ground.
47TO SEPARATE BETWEEN THE UNCLEAN [THING] AND BETWEEN THE PURE [THING] AND BETWEEN THE LIVING CREATURE WHICH IS EATEN AND BETWEEN THE LIVING CREATURE WHICH NOT IT WILL BE EATEN 47You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between animals that may be eaten and those that may not
