33AND THE MENSTRUATING [WOMAN] IN MENSTRUOUS IMPURITY HER AND THE [ONE] DISCHARGING <OBJ.> DISCHARGE HIS FOR THE MALE AND FOR THE FEMALE AND FOR A MAN WHO HE WILL LIE WITH AN UNCLEAN [WOMAN] 33of a woman in her menstrual period, of any male or female who has a discharge and of a man who lies with an unclean woman.’”
1AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO MOSES AFTER [THE] DEATH OF [THE] TWO [THE] SONS OF AARON WHEN DREW NEAR THEY <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND THEY DIED The Day of Atonement (Leviticus 23:26–32; Numbers 29:7–11) 1Now the LORD spoke to Moses after the death of two of Aaron’s sons when they approached the presence of the LORD.
2AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES SPEAK TO AARON BROTHER YOUR AND MAY NOT HE COME AT EVERY TIME INTO THE HOLY PLACE FROM INSIDE TO THE CURTAIN TO [THE] FACE OF THE ATONEMENT COVER WHICH [IS] ON THE ARK AND NOT HE WILL DIE FOR IN THE CLOUD I WILL APPEAR OVER THE ATONEMENT COVER 2And the LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron not to enter freely into the Most Holy Place*NoteCloseOr the Holy Place; also in verses 16, 17, 20, 23, and 27 behind the veil in front of the mercy seat*NoteCloseOr atonement cover; here and throughout this chapter on the ark, or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.
3WITH THIS HE WILL COME AARON INTO THE HOLY PLACE WITH A BULL A YOUNG ONE OF [THE] HERD TO A SIN OFFERING AND A RAM TO A BURNT OFFERING 3This is how Aaron is to enter the Holy Place: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
4A TUNIC OF LINEN OF HOLINESS HE WILL WEAR AND UNDERGARMENTS OF LINEN THEY WILL BE ON FLESH HIS AND WITH A SASH OF LINEN HE WILL GIRD HIMSELF AND WITH A TURBAN OF LINEN HE WILL WIND [ARE] GARMENTS OF HOLINESS THEY AND HE WILL WASH WITH <THE> WATER <OBJ.> BODY HIS AND HE WILL PUT ON THEM 4He is to wear the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments. He must tie a linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are holy garments, and he must bathe himself with water before he wears them.
5AND FROM WITH <THE> [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL HE WILL TAKE TWO MALE GOATS OF GOATS TO A SIN OFFERING AND A RAM ONE TO A BURNT OFFERING 5And he shall take from the congregation of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.
6AND HE WILL PRESENT AARON <OBJ.> [THE] BULL OF THE SIN OFFERING WHICH [IS] FOR <THE> HIMSELF AND HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT FOR HIMSELF AND FOR HOUSEHOLD HIS 6Aaron is to present the bull for his sin offering and make atonement for himself and his household.
7AND HE WILL TAKE <OBJ.> [THE] TWO THE MALE GOATS AND HE WILL STATION <OBJ.> THEM <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] TENT OF MEETING 7Then he shall take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
8AND HE WILL PUT AARON ON [THE] TWO THE MALE GOATS LOTS A LOT ONE FOR YAHWEH AND A LOT ONE FOR [THE] ESCAPE GOAT 8After Aaron casts lots for the two goats, one for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat,*NoteCloseLiterally the other to Azazel; similarly twice in verse 10 and once in verse 26
9AND HE WILL PRESENT AARON <OBJ.> THE MALE GOAT WHICH IT CAME UP ON IT THE LOT FOR YAHWEH AND HE WILL OFFER IT A SIN OFFERING 9he shall present the goat chosen by lot for the LORD and sacrifice it as a sin offering.
10AND THE MALE GOAT WHICH IT CAME UP ON IT THE LOT FOR [THE] ESCAPE GOAT IT WILL BE STATIONED ALIVE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH TO MAKE ATONEMENT ON IT BY SENDING AWAY <OBJ.> IT TO [THE] ESCAPE GOAT THE WILDERNESS TOWARDS 10But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD to make atonement by sending it into the wilderness as the scapegoat.
11AND HE WILL PRESENT AARON <OBJ.> [THE] BULL OF THE SIN OFFERING WHICH [IS] FOR <THE> HIMSELF AND HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT FOR HIMSELF AND FOR HOUSEHOLD HIS AND HE WILL CUT [THE] THROAT OF <OBJ.> [THE] BULL OF THE SIN OFFERING WHICH [IS] FOR <THE> HIMSELF 11When Aaron presents the bull for his sin offering and makes atonement for himself and his household, he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering
12AND HE WILL TAKE <THE> FULLNESS OF <THE> CENSER COALS OF FIRE FROM ON THE ALTAR FROM TO BEFORE YAHWEH AND [THE] FULLNESS OF HANDS HIS INCENSE OF PERFUME<S> FINE AND HE WILL BRING [THEM] FROM INSIDE TO THE CURTAIN 12Then he must take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense, and take them inside the veil.
13AND HE WILL PUT <OBJ.> THE INCENSE ON THE FIRE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND IT WILL COVER [THE] CLOUD OF THE INCENSE <OBJ.> THE ATONEMENT COVER WHICH [IS] ON THE TESTIMONY AND NOT HE WILL DIE 13He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the cloud of incense will cover the mercy seat above the Testimony,*NoteCloseThe Testimony refers to the stone tablets in the ark of the covenant inscribed with the Ten Commandments. so that he will not die.
14AND HE WILL TAKE SOME OF [THE] BLOOD OF THE BULL AND HE WILL SPATTER [IT] WITH FINGER HIS ON [THE] FACE OF THE ATONEMENT COVER EAST -WARD AND <TO> BEFORE THE ATONEMENT COVER HE WILL SPATTER SEVEN TIMES SOME OF THE BLOOD WITH FINGER HIS 14And he is to take some of the bull’s blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the east side of the mercy seat; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the mercy seat.
15AND HE WILL CUT [THE] THROAT OF <OBJ.> [THE] MALE GOAT OF THE SIN OFFERING WHICH [IS] FOR THE PEOPLE AND HE WILL BRING <OBJ.> BLOOD ITS TO FROM INSIDE TO THE CURTAIN AND HE WILL DO WITH BLOOD ITS JUST AS HE DID TO [THE] BLOOD OF THE BULL AND HE WILL SPATTER <OBJ.> IT ON THE ATONEMENT COVER AND <TO> BEFORE THE ATONEMENT COVER 15Aaron shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and bring its blood behind the veil, and with its blood he must do as he did with the bull’s blood: He is to sprinkle it against the mercy seat and in front of it.
16AND HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT ON THE HOLY PLACE FROM [THE] UNCLEANNESS<ES> OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND FROM TRANSGRESSIONS THEIR TO ALL SINS THEIR AND THUS HE WILL DO TO [THE] TENT OF MEETING WHICH DWELLS WITH THEM IN AMONG UNCLEANNESS<ES> THEIR 16So he shall make atonement for the Most Holy Place because of the impurities and rebellious acts of the Israelites in regard to all their sins. He is to do the same for the Tent of Meeting which abides among them in the midst of their impurities.
17AND ANY PERSON NOT HE WILL BE IN [THE] TENT OF MEETING WHEN GOES HE TO MAKE ATONEMENT IN THE HOLY PLACE UNTIL COMES OUT HE AND HE HAS MADE ATONEMENT FOR HIMSELF AND FOR HOUSEHOLD HIS AND FOR ALL [THE] ASSEMBLY OF ISRAEL 17No one may be in the Tent of Meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he leaves, after he has made atonement for himself, his household, and the whole assembly of Israel.
18AND HE WILL GO OUT TO THE ALTAR WHICH [IS] <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT ON IT AND HE WILL TAKE SOME OF [THE] BLOOD OF THE BULL AND SOME OF [THE] BLOOD OF THE MALE GOAT AND HE WILL PUT [IT] ON [THE] HORNS OF THE ALTAR ALL AROUND 18Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He is to take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar.
19AND HE WILL SPATTER ON IT SOME OF THE BLOOD WITH FINGER HIS SEVEN TIMES AND HE WILL PURIFY IT AND HE WILL SET APART AS HOLY IT FROM [THE] UNCLEANNESS<ES> OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 19He is to sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.
20AND HE WILL FINISH FROM MAKING ATONEMENT FOR <OBJ.> THE HOLY PLACE AND <OBJ.> [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND <OBJ.> THE ALTAR AND HE WILL PRESENT <OBJ.> THE MALE GOAT <THE> LIVING 20When Aaron has finished purifying the Most Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting, and the altar, he is to bring forward the live goat.
21AND HE WILL LEAN AARON <OBJ.> [THE] TWO HANDS HIS ON [THE] HEAD OF THE MALE GOAT <THE> LIVING AND HE WILL CONFESS OVER IT <OBJ.> ALL [THE] INIQUITIES OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND <OBJ.> ALL TRANSGRESSIONS THEIR TO ALL SINS THEIR AND HE WILL PUT <OBJ.> THEM ON [THE] HEAD OF THE MALE GOAT AND HE WILL SEND [IT] AWAY BY [THE] HAND OF A MAN READY THE WILDERNESS TOWARDS 21Then he is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and rebellious acts of the Israelites in regard to all their sins. He is to put them on the goat’s head and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man appointed for the task.
22AND IT WILL BEAR THE MALE GOAT ON ITSELF <OBJ.> ALL INIQUITIES THEIR INTO A LAND INFERTILE AND HE WILL LET GO <OBJ.> THE MALE GOAT IN THE WILDERNESS 22The goat will carry on itself all their iniquities into a solitary place, and the man will release it into the wilderness.
23AND HE WILL GO AARON INTO [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND HE WILL STRIP OFF <OBJ.> [THE] GARMENTS OF <THE> LINEN WHICH HE WORE WHEN WENT HE INTO THE HOLY PLACE AND HE WILL LEAVE THEM THERE 23Then Aaron is to enter the Tent of Meeting, take off the linen garments he put on before entering the Most Holy Place, and leave them there.
24AND HE WILL WASH <OBJ.> BODY HIS WITH <THE> WATER IN A PLACE HOLY AND HE WILL PUT ON <OBJ.> GARMENTS HIS AND HE WILL COME OUT AND HE WILL OFFER <OBJ.> BURNT OFFERING HIS AND <OBJ.> [THE] BURNT OFFERING OF THE PEOPLE AND HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT FOR HIMSELF AND FOR THE PEOPLE 24He is to bathe himself with water in a holy place and put on his own clothes. Then he must go out and sacrifice his burnt offering and the people’s burnt offering to make atonement for himself and for the people.
25AND <OBJ.> [THE] FAT OF THE SIN OFFERING HE WILL MAKE SMOKE THE ALTAR TOWARDS 25He is also to burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.
26AND THE [ONE WHO] LET GO <OBJ.> THE MALE GOAT TO [THE] ESCAPE GOAT HE WILL WASH GARMENTS HIS AND HE WILL WASH <OBJ.> BODY HIS WITH <THE> WATER AND AFTER THUS HE WILL COME INTO THE CAMP 26The man who released the goat as the scapegoat must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may reenter the camp.
27AND <OBJ.> [THE] BULL OF THE SIN OFFERING AND <OBJ.> [THE] MALE GOAT OF THE SIN OFFERING WHICH IT WAS BROUGHT <OBJ.> BLOOD THEIR TO MAKE ATONEMENT IN THE HOLY PLACE SOMEONE WILL BRING OUT TO FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF THE CAMP AND PEOPLE WILL BURN WITH <THE> FIRE <OBJ.> HIDES THEIR AND <OBJ.> FLESH THEIR AND <OBJ.> OFFAL THEIR 27The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought into the Most Holy Place to make atonement, must be taken outside the camp; and their hides, flesh, and dung must be burned up
28AND THE [ONE WHO] BURNS <OBJ.> THEM HE WILL WASH GARMENTS HIS AND HE WILL WASH <OBJ.> BODY HIS WITH <THE> WATER AND AFTER THUS HE WILL COME INTO THE CAMP 28The one who burns them must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water, and afterward he may reenter the camp.
29AND IT WILL BECOME FOR <THE> YOU <INTO> A STATUTE OF PERPETUITY IN THE MONTH <THE> SEVENTH ON THE TEN OF THE MONTH YOU WILL AFFLICT <OBJ.> SELVES YOUR AND ANY WORK NOT YOU WILL DO THE NATIVE-BORN AND THE SOJOURNER WHO SOJOURNS IN MIDST OF YOU 29This is to be a permanent statute for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month, you shall humble yourselves*NoteCloseOr afflict your souls or deny yourselves; also in verse 31 and not do any work— whether the native or the foreigner who resides among you—
30FOR ON THE DAY <THE> THIS HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT ON YOU TO PURIFY <OBJ.> YOU FROM ALL SINS YOUR <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH YOU WILL BE PURE 30because on this day atonement will be made for you to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
31[IS] A SABBATH OF SABBATH OBSERVANCE IT TO <THE> YOU AND YOU WILL AFFLICT <OBJ.> SELVES YOUR A STATUTE OF PERPETUITY 31It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you, that you may humble yourselves; it is a permanent statute.
32AND HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT THE PRIEST WHOM SOMEONE WILL ANOINT <OBJ.> HIM AND WHOM SOMEONE WILL FILL <OBJ.> HAND HIS TO SERVE AS PRIEST IN PLACE OF FATHER HIS AND HE WILL WEAR <OBJ.> [THE] GARMENTS OF <THE> LINEN [THE] GARMENTS OF <THE> HOLINESS 32The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest shall make atonement. He will put on the sacred linen garments
33AND HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT FOR <OBJ.> [THE] SANCTUARY OF <THE> HOLINESS AND <OBJ.> [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND <OBJ.> THE ALTAR HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT FOR AND ON THE PRIESTS AND ON ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF THE ASSEMBLY HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT 33and make atonement for the Most Holy Place,*NoteCloseOr the Holy Sanctuary the Tent of Meeting, and the altar, and for the priests and all the people of the assembly.
34AND IT WILL BECOME THIS FOR <THE> YOU <INTO> A STATUTE OF PERPETUITY TO MAKE ATONEMENT ON [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM ALL SINS THEIR ONE [TIME] IN THE YEAR AND HE DID JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES 34This is to be a permanent statute for you, to make atonement once a year for the Israelites because of all their sins.” And all this was done as the LORD had commanded Moses.
