1AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO MOSES <TO> SAYING The Boundaries of Canaan (Genesis 15:8–21) 1Then the LORD said to Moses,
2COMMAND <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM IF YOU [ARE] ABOUT TO GO INTO THE LAND CANAAN THIS [IS] THE LAND WHICH IT WILL FALL TO <THE> YOU <IN> AN INHERITANCE [THE] LAND OF CANAAN TO BORDERS ITS 2“Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, it will be allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:
3AND IT WILL BE OF YOU [THE] SIDE OF [THE] SOUTH FROM [THE] WILDERNESS OF ZIN ON [THE] HANDS OF EDOM AND IT WILL BE OF YOU BORDER OF [THE] SOUTHWARD FROM [THE] END OF [THE] SEA OF <THE> SALT EAST -WARD 3Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea,*NoteCloseThat is, the Dead Sea; also in verse 12
4AND IT WILL TURN OF YOU THE BORDER FROM [THE] SOUTH TO [THE] ASCENT OF SCORPIONS AND IT WILL PASS ON ZIN TOWARDS AND THEY WILL BE EXTREMITIES ITS FROM [THE] SOUTH OF KADESH BARNEA AND IT WILL GO OUT HAZAR ADDAR AND IT WILL PASS ON AZMON TOWARDS 4cross south of the Ascent of Akrabbim,*NoteCloseOr the Ascent of Scorpions or Scorpion Pass continue to Zin, and go south of Kadesh-barnea. Then it will go on to Hazar-addar and proceed to Azmon,
5AND IT WILL TURN THE BORDER FROM AZMON [THE] WADI OF TOWARDS EGYPT AND THEY WILL BE EXTREMITIES ITS THE SEA TOWARDS 5where it will turn from Azmon, join the Brook of Egypt, and end at the Sea.*NoteCloseThat is, the Mediterranean Sea, also called the Great Sea; also in verses 6 and 7
6AND [THE] BORDER OF [THE] WEST AND IT WILL BE FOR <THE> YOU THE SEA <THE> GREAT AND A BORDER THIS IT WILL BE OF YOU BORDER OF [THE] WEST 6Your western border will be the coastline of the Great Sea; this will be your boundary on the west.
7AND THIS IT WILL BE OF YOU BORDER OF [THE] NORTH FROM THE SEA <THE> GREAT YOU WILL MARK OUT FOR <THE> YOURSELVES HOR THE MOUNTAIN 7Your northern border will run from the Great Sea directly to Mount Hor,
8FROM HOR THE MOUNTAIN YOU WILL MARK OUT LEBO HAMATH AND THEY WILL BE [THE] EXTREMITIES OF THE BORDER ZEDAD TOWARDS 8and from Mount Hor to Lebo-hamath, then extend to Zedad,
9AND IT WILL GO OUT THE BORDER ZIPHRON TOWARDS AND THEY WILL BE EXTREMITIES ITS HAZAR ENAN THIS IT WILL BE OF YOU BORDER OF [THE] NORTH 9continue to Ziphron, and end at Hazar-enan. This will be your boundary on the north.
10AND YOU WILL MARK FOR <THE> YOURSELVES FOR [THE] BORDER OF EAST -WARD FROM HAZAR ENAN SHEPHAM TOWARDS 10And your eastern border will run straight from Hazar-enan to Shepham,
11AND IT WILL GO DOWN THE BORDER FROM SHEPHAM <THE> RIBLAH FROM [THE] EAST OF <THE> AIN AND IT WILL GO DOWN THE BORDER AND IT WILL REACH TO [THE] SHOULDER OF [THE] SEA OF KINNERETH EAST -WARD 11then go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Chinnereth.*NoteCloseThat is, the Sea of Galilee
12AND IT WILL GO DOWN THE BORDER THE JORDAN TOWARDS AND THEY WILL BE EXTREMITIES ITS [THE] SEA OF <THE> SALT THIS IT WILL BE OF YOU THE LAND TO BORDERS ITS ALL AROUND 12Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
13AND HE COMMANDED MOSES <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <TO> SAYING THIS [IS] THE LAND WHICH YOU WILL INHERIT <OBJ.> IT BY LOT WHICH HE HAS COMMANDED YAHWEH TO GIVE TO [THE] NINE THE TRIBES AND [THE] HALF OF THE TRIBE 13So Moses commanded the Israelites, “Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The LORD has commanded that it be given to the nine and a half tribes.
14FOR THEY HAVE TAKEN [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF THE REUBENITE[S] TO [THE] HOUSE OF ANCESTORS THEIR AND [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF THE GADITE[S] TO [THE] HOUSE OF ANCESTORS THEIR AND [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH THEY HAVE TAKEN INHERITANCE THEIR 14For the tribes of the Reubenites and Gadites, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, have already received their inheritance.
15[THE] TWO THE TRIBES AND [THE] HALF OF THE TRIBE THEY HAVE TAKEN INHERITANCE THEIR FROM [THE] OTHER SIDE OF [THE] JORDAN OF JERICHO EAST -WARD EAST -WARD 15These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
17THESE [ARE] [THE] NAMES OF THE MEN WHO THEY WILL GIVE AS INHERITANCE TO <THE> YOU <OBJ.> THE LAND ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN 17“These are the names of the men who are to assign the land as an inheritance for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.
18AND A LEADER ONE A LEADER ONE FROM A TRIBE YOU WILL TAKE TO GIVE AS INHERITANCE <OBJ.> THE LAND 18Appoint one leader from each tribe to distribute the land.
19AND THESE [ARE] [THE] NAMES OF THE MEN OF [THE] TRIBE OF JUDAH CALEB [THE] SON OF JEPHUNNEH 19These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh from the tribe of Judah;
20AND OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF SIMEON SHEMUEL [THE] SON OF AMMIHUD 20Shemuel son of Ammihud from the tribe of Simeon;
21OF [THE] TRIBE OF BENJAMIN ELIDAD [THE] SON OF CHISLON 21Elidad son of Chislon from the tribe of Benjamin;
22AND OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF DAN A LEADER BUKKI [THE] SON OF JOGLI 22Bukki son of Jogli, a leader from the tribe of Dan;
23OF [THE] SONS OF JOSEPH OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MANASSEH A LEADER HANNIEL [THE] SON OF EPHOD 23Hanniel son of Ephod, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph;
24AND OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF EPHRAIM A LEADER KEMUEL [THE] SON OF SHIPHTAN 24Kemuel son of Shiphtan, a leader from the tribe of Ephraim;
25AND OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ZEBULUN A LEADER ELIZAPHAN [THE] SON OF PARNACH 25Eli-zaphan son of Parnach, a leader from the tribe of Zebulun;
26AND OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ISSACHAR A LEADER PALTIEL [THE] SON OF AZZAN 26Paltiel son of Azzan, a leader from the tribe of Issachar;
27AND OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ASHER A LEADER AHIHUD [THE] SON OF SHELOMI 27Ahihud son of Shelomi, a leader from the tribe of Asher;
28AND OF [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF NAPHTALI A LEADER PEDAHEL [THE] SON OF AMMIHUD 28and Pedahel son of Ammihud, a leader from the tribe of Naphtali.”
29THESE [ARE THOSE] WHOM HE COMMANDED YAHWEH TO APPORTION AS AN INHERITANCE TO <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN 29These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
