49ON [THE] MOUTH OF YAHWEH SOMEONE ENROLLED <OBJ.> THEM BY [THE] HAND OF MOSES A MAN A MAN ON SERVICE HIS AND ON BURDEN HIS AND ENROLLED [MEN] HIS WHOM HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES 49At the LORD’s command through Moses they were numbered, and each one was assigned his work and burden, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
1AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO MOSES <TO> SAYING Cleansing the Camps (Leviticus 13:1–46) 1Then the LORD said to Moses,
2COMMAND <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL SO THEY MAY SEND AWAY FROM THE CAMP ANY [ONE WHO] HAS A SKIN DISEASE AND ANY [ONE WHO] HAS A DISCHARGE AND ANY [PERSON] UNCLEAN TO A CORPSE 2“Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone with a skin disease,*NoteCloseForms of the Hebrew tzaraath, traditionally translated as leprosy, were used for various skin diseases; see Leviticus 13. anyone who has a bodily discharge, and anyone who is defiled by a dead body.
3FROM MALE UNTO FEMALE YOU WILL SEND AWAY TO FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF THE CAMP YOU WILL SEND AWAY THEM AND NOT THEY WILL MAKE UNCLEAN <OBJ.> CAMPS THEIR WHICH I [AM] DWELLING IN MIDST OF THEM 3You must send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.”
4AND THEY DID SO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY SENT AWAY <OBJ.> THEM TO FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF THE CAMP JUST AS HE HAD SPOKEN YAHWEH TO MOSES SO THEY DID [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 4So the Israelites did this, sending such people outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses.
5AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO MOSES <TO> SAYING Confession and Restitution (Luke 19:1–10) 5And the LORD said to Moses,
6SPEAK TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL A MAN OR A WOMAN IF THEY WILL DO ANY OF ALL [THE] SINS OF <THE> HUMANKIND BY ACTING UNFAITHFULLY UNFAITHFULNESS AGAINST YAHWEH AND IT WILL BE GUILTY THE PERSON <THE> THAT 6“Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts unfaithfully against the LORD by committing any sin against another, that person is guilty
7AND THEY WILL CONFESS <OBJ.> SIN THEIR WHICH THEY HAVE DONE AND HE WILL REPAY <OBJ.> COMPENSATION ITS IN SUM ITS AND FIFTH ITS LET HIM ADD TO IT AND HE WILL GIVE [IT] TO [THE ONE] WHOM HE WAS GUILTY TO <THE> HIM 7and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution,. add a fifth to its value, and give all this to the one he has wronged
8AND IF NOT [BELONGS] TO THE PERSON A KINSMAN-REDEEMER TO REPAY THE COMPENSATION TO HIM THE COMPENSATION WHICH IS REPAID [BELONGS] TO YAHWEH FOR THE PRIEST <FROM> <TO> BESIDES [THE] RAM OF <THE> ATONEMENT<S> WHICH HE WILL MAKE ATONEMENT BY <THE> IT ON HIM 8But if the man has no relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest along with the ram of atonement, by which the atonement is made for him.
9AND EVERY CONTRIBUTION TO ALL [THE] HOLY THINGS OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHICH THEY WILL BRING NEAR TO THE PRIEST TO <THE> HIM IT WILL BELONG 9Every sacred contribution the Israelites bring to the priest shall belong to him.
10AND EVERYONE <OBJ.> HOLY THINGS HIS TO <THE> HIM THEY WILL BELONG EVERYONE [THAT] WHICH HE WILL GIVE TO THE PRIEST TO <THE> HIM IT WILL BELONG 10Each man’s sacred gifts are his own, but whatever he gives to the priest will belong to the priest.”
12SPEAK TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM A MAN A MAN IF SHE WILL TURN ASIDE WIFE HIS AND SHE WILL ACT UNFAITHFULLY AGAINST <THE> HIM UNFAITHFULNESS 12“Speak to the Israelites and tell them that if any man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him
13AND HE WILL LIE WITH A MAN WITH <THE> HER A LAYING OF SEED AND IT WILL BE HIDDEN FROM [THE] EYES OF HUSBAND HER AND SHE WILL BE UNDISCOVERED AND SHE SHE HAS MADE HERSELF UNCLEAN AND [WAS] A WITNESS THERE NOT AGAINST <THE> HER AND SHE NOT SHE WAS CAUGHT 13by sleeping with another man, and it is concealed from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act),
14AND IT WILL PASS OVER HIM A SPIRIT OF JEALOUSY AND HE WILL BE JEALOUS OF <OBJ.> WIFE HIS AND SHE SHE HAS MADE HERSELF UNCLEAN OR IT HAS PASSED OVER HIM A SPIRIT OF JEALOUSY AND HE WILL BE JEALOUS OF <OBJ.> WIFE HIS AND SHE NOT SHE HAS MADE HERSELF UNCLEAN 14and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself— or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not defiled herself—
15AND HE WILL BRING THE MAN <OBJ.> WIFE HIS TO THE PRIEST AND HE WILL BRING <OBJ.> OFFERING HER ON HER <THE> TENTH OF <THE> EPHAH FLOUR OF BARLEY<S> NOT HE WILL POUR OUT ON IT OIL AND NOT HE WILL PUT ON IT FRANKINCENSE FOR [IS] A GRAIN OFFERING OF JEALOUSI<ES> IT A GRAIN OFFERING OF REMEMBRANCE [WHICH] BRINGS TO REMEMBRANCE INIQUITY 15then he is to bring his wife to the priest. He must also bring for her an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour.*NoteCloseA tenth of an ephah is approximately 2 dry quarts or 2.2 liters (probably about 3.5 pounds or 1.6 kilograms of barley flour). He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, an offering of memorial as a reminder of iniquity.
16AND HE WILL BRING NEAR <OBJ.> HER THE PRIEST AND HE WILL MAKE STAND HER <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH 16The priest is to bring the wife forward and have her stand before the LORD.
17AND HE WILL TAKE THE PRIEST WATER HOLY IN A VESSEL OF EARTHENWARE AND SOME OF THE DUST WHICH IT WILL BE ON [THE] FLOOR OF THE TABERNACLE HE WILL TAKE THE PRIEST AND HE WILL PUT [IT] INTO THE WATER 17Then he is to take some holy water in a clay jar and put some of the dust from the tabernacle floor into the water.
18AND HE WILL MAKE STAND THE PRIEST <OBJ.> THE WOMAN <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND HE WILL LET LOOSE <OBJ.> [THE] HEAD OF THE WOMAN AND HE WILL PUT ON HANDS HER <OBJ.> [THE] GRAIN OFFERING OF <THE> REMEMBRANCE [IS] A GRAIN OFFERING OF JEALOUSI<ES> IT AND IN [THE] HAND OF THE PRIEST THEY WILL BE [THE] WATERS OF <THE> BITTER [THINGS] WHICH BRING A CURSE 18After the priest has the woman stand before the LORD, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering of memorial, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse.
19AND HE WILL MAKE SWEAR <OBJ.> HER THE PRIEST AND HE WILL SAY TO THE WOMAN IF NOT HE HAS LAIN WITH A MAN WITH <THE> YOU AND IF NOT YOU HAVE TURNED ASIDE UNCLEANNESS UNDER HUSBAND YOUR BE FREE FROM [THE] WATERS OF <THE> BITTER [THINGS] WHICH BRING A CURSE <THE> THESE 19And he is to put the woman under oath and say to her, ‘If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband’s authority, may you be immune to this bitter water that brings a curse.
20AND YOU IF YOU HAVE TURNED ASIDE UNDER HUSBAND YOUR AND IF YOU HAVE MADE YOURSELF UNCLEAN AND HE HAS GIVEN A MAN IN <THE> YOU <OBJ.> COPULATION HIS FROM EXCEPT HUSBAND YOUR 20But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority and have defiled yourself and lain carnally with a man other than your husband’—
21AND HE WILL MAKE SWEAR THE PRIEST <OBJ.> THE WOMAN WITH [THE] OATH OF THE CURSE AND HE WILL SAY THE PRIEST TO THE WOMAN MAY HE MAKE YAHWEH <OBJ.> YOU INTO A CURSE AND INTO A OATH IN AMONG PEOPLE YOUR WHEN MAKES YAHWEH <OBJ.> THIGH YOUR FALLING AND <OBJ.> BELLY YOUR SWOLLEN 21and the priest shall have the woman swear under the oath of the curse ‘then may the LORD make you an attested curse among your people by making your thigh shrivel and your belly swell.
22AND THEY WILL GO THE WATERS WHICH BRING A CURSE <THE> THESE IN INWARD PARTS YOUR TO MAKE SWELL A BELLY AND TO MAKE FALL A THIGH AND SHE WILL SAY THE WOMAN AMEN AMEN 22May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach and cause your belly to swell and your thigh to shrivel.’ Then the woman is to say, ‘Amen, Amen.’
23AND HE WILL WRITE <OBJ.> THE CURSES <THE> THESE THE PRIEST ON THE SCROLL AND HE WILL WIPE [THEM] OFF INTO [THE] WATERS OF <THE> BITTER [THINGS] 23And the priest shall write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water.
24AND HE WILL MAKE DRINK <OBJ.> THE WOMAN <OBJ.> [THE] WATERS OF <THE> BITTER [THINGS] WHICH BRING A CURSE AND THEY WILL GO IN <THE> HER THE WATERS WHICH BRING A CURSE TO BITTER [THINGS] 24He is to have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and may cause her bitter suffering.
25AND HE WILL TAKE THE PRIEST FROM [THE] HAND OF THE WOMAN <OBJ.> [THE] GRAIN OFFERING OF <THE> JEALOUSI<ES> AND HE WILL WAVE <OBJ.> THE GRAIN OFFERING <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND HE WILL BRING NEAR <OBJ.> IT TO THE ALTAR 25The priest shall take from her hand the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD, and bring it to the altar.
26AND HE WILL TAKE A HANDFUL THE PRIEST OF THE GRAIN OFFERING <OBJ.> MEMORIAL OFFERING ITS AND HE WILL MAKE [IT] SMOKE THE ALTAR TOWARDS AND AFTER HE WILL MAKE DRINK <OBJ.> THE WOMAN <OBJ.> THE WATERS 26Then the priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar; after that he is to have the woman drink the water.
27AND HE WILL MAKE DRINK HER <OBJ.> THE WATERS AND SHE WILL BE IF SHE HAS MADE HERSELF UNCLEAN AND SHE HAS ACTED UNFAITHFULLY UNFAITHFULNESS AGAINST HUSBAND HER AND THEY WILL GO IN <THE> HER THE WATERS WHICH BRING A CURSE TO BITTER [THINGS] AND IT WILL SWELL BELLY HER AND IT WILL FALL THIGH HER AND SHE WILL BECOME THE WOMAN <INTO> A CURSE IN [THE] MIDST OF PEOPLE HER 27When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings a curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, her thigh will shrivel, and she will become accursed among her people.
28AND IF NOT SHE HAS MADE HERSELF UNCLEAN THE WOMAN AND [IS] PURE SHE AND SHE WILL BE FREE AND SHE WILL BE IMPREGNATED SEED 28But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, she will be unaffected and able to conceive children.
29THIS [IS] [THE] LAW OF <THE> JEALOUSI<ES> THAT SHE WILL TURN ASIDE A WIFE UNDER HUSBAND HER AND SHE WILL MAKE HERSELF UNCLEAN 29This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority,
30OR A MAN WHOM IT WILL PASS OVER HIM A SPIRIT OF JEALOUSY AND HE WILL BE JEALOUS OF <OBJ.> WIFE HIS AND HE WILL MAKE STAND <OBJ.> THE WOMAN <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND HE WILL DO TO <THE> HER THE PRIEST <OBJ.> ALL THE LAW <THE> THIS 30or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law.
31AND HE WILL BE FREE THE MAN FROM INIQUITY AND THE WOMAN <THE> THAT SHE WILL BEAR <OBJ.> INIQUITY HER 31The husband will be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.”
